A Great Read
The book took me back to that time. It was very descriptive. I felt as though I were there with him every minute.

A stirring, well written history of early 20th century US
This is a beautifully written and presented book where the author transport you to a time and place before the complete assimilation of the American population. The Kennebec Valley is not home to the colorful fisherman that Mrs. Paul's fishsticks have made synonymous with Maine but with farming life that has all but vanished. The changes in the author and his family during the course of this work put you into the very frame that shaped so many from New England. A must read for any fan of early 20th century American history and for any fan of Americana in general

Mark Twain and the editor who just happened to be his wife
It's not simply that Willis provides readers with a new way of understanding Twain's life and work--it's that she does so with such an eloquent prose style. If on the surface Olivia Langdon Clemens appears to be the quintessential Victorian lady--frail, neuresthenic, domestic--her inner strength and unflappable judgement are skillfully uncovered by Willis, who in this work produces that rarest of things: a literary biography that is both literary and biographical.

A lively account and "must" reading for all Mark Twain fans.
Mark and Livy represents the only full-length survey of the woman behind Mark Twain - wife Olivia Clemens, or Livy. Chapters consider her entire role in his life, from her position as wife and mother to her involvement in his writings and career. A lively account which will appeal to Twain fans and readers of biography alike.

Mark Ethridge: The Life and Times of a Great Newspaperman

Heartwarming "book with a view"
This heartwarming "book with a view" tells of another time in the USA through the eyes of Willie Snow Ethridge (1900-1982), the wife of prominent newspaper editor, Mark F. Ethridge.

According to Polly Powers Stramm for the Savannah Morning News (April 20, 2000), Willie Snow Ethridge "seemed to be the Erma Bombeck of her day. She wrote books with humorous titles...

From 1942-1962, Mark Ethridge served as Publisher & Editor of the Louisville Courier- Journal. In 1963 the news department he led won a Pulitzer.

Mark Ethridge also served as the U.S. delegate, U.N. Commission of Investigation to Study the Greek Border Disputes, 1947; as the U.S. Representative, U.N. Conciliation Commission for Palestine, 1949; and as Chairman, U.S. Advisory Commission on Information, 1948-50.

As Dear Abby noted upon hearing of his death in 1981, Mark Ethridge was one of the first journalists to speak out boldly against racism in the deep South. In a full page article, The New York Times toasted his career and the legacy he created as a journalist and diplomat.

This book, which I read several times some years ago is witty and full of incisive (and sometimes very funny) observations. Imagine a lighter prosed Jane Austen writing in the State of Georgia in the 1940s and 1950s.

Willie Snow Ethridge (1900-1983, born in Georgia, lived in N.C. and Kentucky), the author of this book and Mark Ethridge's wife, authored fifteen books, including several popular novels, primarily in the 1940s and 1950s.

Mark F. Ethridge (1996-1981), was my paternal great-uncle.

A Warm Impassioned Portrait of a Great Man
Although the premise seems flimsy (A woman writing a biography of her husband) it is so well written that after the first page, I had completely abandoned all of my skepticism. Even more impressive is Mark Ethridge's life. He deserves, more than most people, to have a biography written about him. He is fortunate to be married to such a supremely talented writer.

Mark McGwire: A Biography

Author: Jonathan Hall

The best biography I've ever read.
Mark started off as a rookie in 1986. He was drafted to the Oakland A's. When Mark was a kid he actually hated baseball and loved golf, but his parent's told him they really wanted him to play baseball so Mark finally agreed and at his first at bat he hit a home run. When Mark was in his teenage years he was asked to join the California All-star team and he hit a ball into Mexico. It just happened to be that they were playing on the border of California and Mexico. In high school he had to quit the team he was playing on because of a knee injury but Mark was so good in baseball he was awarded a scholarship. In Mark's professional years he is probably going to be most famous for hitting 62, home runs but when he started he was horrible .Mark said it was a slump but the media thought different but after he starting hitting well, he was right. It was a slump. I really enjoyed reading the book Mark McGwire because it was very interesting and exciting I would recommend this book to anyone.

Great summary of McGwire's Record Breaking Season and Career
This book is a an excellent re-cap of Mark McGwire's career and a thorough look at his head to head competition with Sammy Sosa. The writer does a very good job of portraying McGwire as hero to both parents and children. A perfect book for anyone interested in this fine baseball player.

The Quintessential Proffreading Primer

If you are thinking of learning to proofread, do editorial work or any kind of proofing of copy this is the book to learn it with.

Systematically set up as both text and workbook the nearly 500 pages is chock-a-block with all one needs to know to completely understand and prepare for any proofreading job.

The book has worksheets and quizzes as well as a clean style of writing that engages the reader without puzzling the newcomer.

I worked a summer as a proofreader, thrown into the deep end with multi-language proofing work. I bought this book and it proved to be a life saver. I learned m-space from n-space and all the intricacies in between.

This is _the_ book to learn proofreading!

A Refreshing and Concise Workbook for Aspiring Proofreaders
Whether learning the trade or refreshing rusty skills, Mark My Words is the most welcome and informative proofreading workbook I have found. Content is introduced in a practical step-by-step manner. Discussion of topics progresses logically from a beginner's level i.e. learning of the 'dele' mark on through to more intermediate levels such as page layout editing. Many features of this text/workbook set it above the rest of the proofreading guides. Exercises along with their answer keys accompany each skill-builder. Helpful hints are arranged in keys; sections of chapters on devoted to subjects such as what to query, tricks of the trade, and guidelines for what to proof in each successive pass of one's editing. For exercises comparing dead copy to live, Mark My Words has even perforated pages for removal and, hence, easy comparison reading! Mark My Words is also a wonderfully clear and concise reference book. I have found it is much faster to seek an answer to a proofreading question with Peggy Smith's work than with any of the others in my collection...and there are several. I recommend this book whole-heartedly!

Mark of the Beast

The Mark of the Beast
This book, set in England and Israel during the early 1900's, covers the topic of the world becoming a one economic, one religion system all based out of the rebuilt Babylon. If one is reading the current "Left Behind" series, you will notice several similiar styles. An example would be the name of the World Ruler, Apleon in this book while the Left Behind series calls him Appolyon. This book also contains poetry and hymn texts, as well as Scripture quotes to cover the topic. The author creates a picture that is very real and what would happen should the world lose the influence of the Church and the Third person of the Trinity.

In the Twinkling of an Eye
This "can't put it down" book has a delightful story line and a sobering message that should not be ignored! A line from the publisher's note says: "It is written in a style so fascinating that young and old will read it with almost breathless interest from start to finish."! We often don't think about "the Lord's near return" and this book is a reminder: joyfully in the knowledge of being with Christ eternally, and oh, so soberly for those who will be left behind. I'm looking forward to sharing this book, as an encouragement to those who are in Christ and as an eye-opener to those who are not! There is a sequel that I can't wait to read -however it is out of print so I hope your prayers will be with me in my search!

An historical journey through the eyes of early Christians
I have seldom read a series of books that kept me as captivated as 'The Mark of the Lion' trilogy! I read all three books in one week and could not wait to loan them to my friends. The characters became so real to the reader that you found yourself worrying about their fates and rejoicing in their triumphs! It made me stop to think that surely the Lord does want all men to be set free in the salvation he provided for us. I encourage anyone who is feeling that they are not special or deserving of God's love to read these books- the experience will make you feel wonderful.

READ THIS BOOK!
This is the best book ever written! I also reccomend you to read the two following books, they are just as good!

Life's lesson
Mr Hegg has obviously had differences with his own father sometime in the past. He has imagined a story about a young man's dilemma's growing up and tied it in beautifully with the Christmas story. Every American male should read this book or have it read to him. Then take 2 or 3 days to think it over and see if he can relate. It can remove any doubts about his own worth and about the worth of doing a job right. Maybe I'm reading too much into a juvenile story but I got the message that there's a deeper mature meaning to the last passage in the book. And Tom had the astuteness to leave it open to the readers interpretation. I absolutely loved the book.

A joyful celebration of a father's love...
This beautiful version of the Christmas story is lovingly told from Joseph's perspective. It allows you to begin to understand the terrible fear and apprehension he must have felt knowing that Mary, the woman he loved, was pregnant by the grace of God. It also explores the father/child relationship on several levels. This book is filled with grace, love, and genuine heart. Enjoy the peace that it can bring to your world...
