Another Dead Teenager: A Paul Turner Mystery

Disappointment
I did not relish in Zubro's gay mystery, nor did I of any of his novels. I wanted to share this novel with my eldest son who is gay; I thought it would be helpful and comforting for him to see that gays or any groups in which society deems and stereotypes "different". He was quite upset with the entire book, claiming "Gays don't act like that!" I had no idea how affended he was until he burned the book in the fireplace. I, myself, felt that the book was quite choppy too often. I can comprehend the extra information was pertinent to the story at times, but he completely "over did it" with the whole "gay plot". I am also offended by the book and I'm not gay! I am sorry for wasting my money on buying that senseless book.

I'm going to read all of Zubro's
This was the first "gay" mystery I've read, and I now want to eventually obtain and read all of Zubro's mysteries. The pace is fast and smooth for the most part in this book, but at times becomes choppy. Nonetheless, Zubro's intimate knowledge of police procedure and activity is plain, as well as his knowledge of the streets of Chicago. Zubro also weaves well into the story Paul Turner's (he's the protagonist) personal life in a meaningful way that in this book is actually part of the main plot. The characters become three dimentional, taking on lives of their own. The only criticism I have for Zubro is he spends too much time telling things to the reader, rather than letting the plot reveal what is going on. Such as little asides to explain why a character did something. These asides slow down the pace and can be condescending to readers already familiar with how police work. The best aspect of this book is how Zubro portray's a gay character as a human being rather than an icon. It is my hope that Mr. Zubro will provide us with many such mysteries in the future, and I look forward to reading those he has already published.

Better than average gay murder mystery
This is a step up from your average gay murder mystery. Most of the characters are regular guys who just happen to be gay -- no hairdressers or drag queens here. Parts are funny, and nothing sticks out as being particularly bad. Perfect beach reading material.

A giant fanzine
This book is cut and paste writing at its worst. Transcripts from previous interviews and pictures from conventions and old movies are the basis of this book; which translates into a giant fan magazine with all the problems associated with that label. By trumpeting "Unauthorized" you get the feeling the authors have some behind the scenes info, but after looking at a picture of Deforest Kelly in a western in the middle of a synopsis of season one; you realize "unauthorized" means unprofessional. If you need an episode guide, this is complete, but you can probably find the same info a million other places.

A required addition for the die-hard Trekker
Captain's Logs contains *very* detailed on some of the internal politics and strife during TOS (the original series) and TNG (Star Trek: The Next Generation), and several of the movies. (Because of the timing involved, there's not very much about DS9 or Voyager. This is covered in the supplemental volume.)

All of the episodes in TOS and TNG have a summary and most (>95%) have some behind-the-scenes arcana. There is surprisingly little "[actor] was also in [other feature]" type stuff, but rather juicier background on all of the writing and directorial changes.

While the honesty in stating "Star Trek 1 was terrible" is refreshing, it seems like the authors dwell more on the "problem" aspects of the show. For example, in discussing the episode "City on the Edge of Forever," the authors spend a much longer amount of time on the Harlon Ellison saga (Ellison writes the story, it gets butchered into an episode, both win awards, Roddenbery and Ellison at odds over credit).

The result is a less-than-flattering portrayal of Gene Roddenbery. (To be fair, I came away a greater awareness of and respect for Gene Coon and Rick Berman.)

Overall, a worthy read for the die-hardest Trekker.

Only for passionate Trekkers
This book is indeed, long and lenghty! To my amazement, it has "behind the scenes" of EACH episode of the Next Generation and Original Series. When the book was published, Voyager just came out and it talks about it for a chapter or so. Deep Space Nine also got a litte recognition from the writers, but don't expect too much. A BIG plus is the many, many pictures it has. Mostly from conventions and such. Unfortunately, the author might have fallen asleep while writing some sections because a few pages were repeated right after each other. All-in-all, it's pretty good, I'm thinking about getting the sequel, Captain's Logs Supplemental.

Too expensive
I suggest investing your money on another book, this book is just pictures and not as many or as good as you would expect after paying 45 bucks. So forget about it and try looking for another book with a better price per page average.

Scam
I bought the Bulls Book and i Hated it because it was 45.00. i maybe would pay .45 for it but i'm not sure i would pay that. Don't buy until they have yored the price.

5 star Bulls Era!
The Chicago Bulls book: Portrait of an era is a five star book on my account. Portrait of an era gives the reader an inside look at the six time world champion Chicago Bulls! This book contains numerous pictures of the players and staff with short summaries of each person. Being a huge Bulls fan, I would obviously enjoy any book about the Bulls, but this book gives an intimate look at all of the teammates, coaches, etc. If you are a Bulls fan, this book allows you a rare opportunity of seeing the entire team and the staff behind it which is difficult to find. If you happen to be a fan of some bench players that are sometimes overshadowed on the team, here is your chance to get a look at them with equality to Michael Jordan or Scottie Pippen.

Portrait of an era will also give the reader an inside look at the Bulls head coach Phil Jackson, owner Jerry Reinsdorf, and many others. At the end of the pictoral, there is an exclusive look at the historic 95-96 NBA season, in which the Bulls are the record holders of the 72-10 record which is the best in NBA history.

Portrait of an era is a definite must-have for ANY Bulls fan!!! Own a piece of the six time world champions (so far), with wonderful pictures! With purchasing Portrait of an era, not only are you buying a book, you are buying a piece of history!!!!!

Not worth the price tag
Take Chris Brenton's "Multiprotocol Network Design and Troubleshooting" book, add some information on Token Ring, AppleShare, Banyan, LANtastic as well as a number of other dead technologies, slap Mark Minasi's name on the cover and increase the price by $15 and what do you get? "The Complete Network Upgrade & Maintenance Guide". I kid you not, I compared these two books page by page and the text on all of the current technologies is identical word for word. Sybex burned me on this book but never again. It makes me wonder if all the current Minasi books are thrown together the same way.

As networking introduction
Excellent coverage of all aspect of networking but lots of error especially in the tcp/ip subnetting section. This book made a great introduction to the world of networking.

Global coverage
The book covers about every networking related topic with enough theoretical and practicle depth to really understand what's going on.

Some topics described are a little outdated but before a person can understand what's going on with today standards it should understand previous technologies.

It's the only book i know that covers about every protocol used for the various OSI layers (from application standard to the cabling part) without getting too technical on the bit's and bytes level.

I don't really understand why they choose the title "The Complete Network Upgrade & Maintenance Guide" since the book is more a global networking tutorial.

A good, huge book i recommend to everybody that wants to learn about all concepts used with LAN/WAN (inter)networking.

BOOOORING
Mark Anson manages to write one of the most horrible books about derivatives. Mr.Anson's ideas are dated and wouldn't be much help to anyone. I feel sorry for the CalPERS fund if this is the brainpower they have running it.

nothing new
despite being new (june 99) this book does not bring much new knowledge

Actually pretty interesting
Mr. Anson writes a very interesting, and easy to read book about a very difficult subject. Anybody who is interested in credit derivatives should definitely buy this book.

A bunch of design samples with no analysis or discussion
Case studies are great, but we need hard facts and tips about what goes into good identity and what a designer should look for. I expected to see a few case studies with an analysis detailing why the choices were effective, but it's just a pretty book that gives you nothing but samples of successful identity designs. (I suppose, I wouldn't know...)

Not to mention that the page layout makes it incredibly hard to read! I was very surprised that this came from a graphic designer. The text is written in a tiny font (I don't wear glasses and I had trouble) in the margins of the pages over a background with some thin blue lines. The lines aren't such a big deal, but they do really distract from reading, and it's hard enough to read the book as it is. The design samples weren't easy to see in every case either. They weren't just laid out as is, the author chose to make the layout "design-ey". I know, I know, you can't be great at everything (meaning he's a fine designer, but I don't think textbooks are his thing,) so cut the guy some slack. But don't waste my time and money and describe this book as something it's not.

As a reference book, big thumbs down. As a coffee table book, hmm, I've seen plenty better. If you want this book, borrow it from a friend first.

Good, but barely a mention of online identity
Perhaps my review is a bit jaded because I went into this book looking speficially for online identity issues like "how does a designer begin to keep a user on a website with thousands of other options available?" This is the best, hardest identity issue to hit in a long time. As the book was printed in 1998, I expected SOMETHING about online isues. But there was nothing. I'd also like to speak to whomever designed the layout about the superfluous, messy grids and lines that cover each page. It's very, very stylized and already outdated.

buy it
Wonderful. If you design or like logos, and you would like to learn from analytical case studies, then buy this book.

What a disappointment
When I came across this book on Amazon.com, before it was available, I was very excited. As a computer maintenance technician whose knowledge is rather slack in the area of printers, I was very happy to see what I thought was a brand new book on printer maintenance coming out. Other books on the subject that I have browsed at Amazon seem to be rather dated: 1996 or even earlier. And the fact that it was Hewlett-Packard was gravy -- just about all of the printers under my care are HP models. What could be better than an HP printer handbook?

So you can imagine my dismay when the book finally became available and I got to read the above spiel from the author. Not what I had in mind at all. Gee, a whole book devoted to choosing a printer -- just what the world needs. I recently got a chance to take a look at this book at a local bookstore and it was even sadder than I imagined. When is someone finally going to write an updated printer MAINTENANCE book?

Finally a book on printers for regular people!
Most of the books that I have looked at in bookstores on printers have been full of technical jargon and very little information that I needed. With a little bit of reading, this book finally answered many of my questions and gave me ideas on what to do with my new Epson inkjet. It leads you step by step through most common chores too.

Beginner book with plenty of answers
I needed a printer for my first computer system, and this book told me all about what to look for during my visits to the stores. There's plenty of information here and my kids are trying out the crafts. It is a very complete book and I rate it four stars. I have bought several computer books to help me with Windows and my new Pentium 2 and this was the easiest to understand and had the most answers. I will recommend it to my friends and family, the author did a good job.

Good book but...
I have studied this book in a graduate level networking course, where unfortunately they use this as a text book. This is a good book, but it does not offer any in-depth treatment like some other books do, nor is readable. It is more like "old Tanenbaum" with a mass of prose.

The book needs editing, by making it less verbose, a bit formal, and add some analytical/mathematical examples....

Good book but...
...I have read this book for an advanced networking course, where unfortunately, they use this as a text book. This is a good book, no doubt about that - but, the book covers nothing in depth (as the other reviewer has pointed out) and lacks readability. It is like old Tanenbaum's book where everything is prose, there are no problems and lacks any analytical treatment. The discussion could be made less verbose and more formal.

Well-organized; Everything discussed but not in depth.
I have read some parts of this book. I was able to find everything in my field(Multimedia networking) that I was looking for; But unfortunately the book isn't discussing anything in depth. It is not easy to read, but well-organized. I think this book is more useful for teachers than for students. Generally speaking, If you are already familiar with multimedia internetworking issues you will find this book a very good and useful text; But if you are new to these issues, you may be better to study other texts in parallel.

Don't Bother
Unless you are thoroghly initiated into Mrs. Prophet's esoteric beliefs, I would not recommend this book. Throughout its entirety, the author speaks to the reader as if her word was law, and you are accepting it without question. Not only that, but at certain points, the author completely loses her train of thought and branches off into something else. I read up to the second chapter, and I literally threw the book out. So if you are looking for some spiritual fulfillment, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

A great book for crystal lovers
This book explores the author's theosophy of how certain spiritual beings use crystals--diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, amethyst, etc. Explains how people can use crystals and "communicate" with the spiritual beings in everyday life.

I loved it!!
I read this book and found it to be an interesting one!!. I have been a devoted reader of Mrs. Prophet books, for they provide quality information and inspirating stories and valuable insight on ascended masters, karma, reincarnation. This book focus on the seven rays, spiritual energies we are meant to master (power, wisdom, love, purity, science, devotion and forgiveness). Thanks Mrs. Prophet, once again I am delighted.

Meet the box car children
The book name was the adventures of "Benny and Watch".
I think this book would be good for other people to read but it was a mystery story and I don't like mystery stories.

The Boxcar Children

The name of My book is The adventures of Benny watch
The children's Dad died and they were scared of their Grandpa. This is a sad and happy story.

Wonderful book for young kids, extremly action packed
In this first book in the series, you meet Benny, Henry, Jessie and Violet, four children whose parents have died and have no where to go. They find an abandoned boxcar and call it home. The end is more surprising than you can imagine.
