No tutorial files for book
When I first opened this book I was excited by the way it was set up, with real-world tutorials. Half the book is tutorials. However, the publisher decided to cheap out and not include a CD ROM with the files that the tutorials refer to. As a designer on a tight schedule I don't have the time to waste looking for (or making) files to use with the tutorials.

This made half the book useless. It was very disappointing. Don't make a $31 mistake, look for something better.

In Design guide is Great!
I am a design instructor from Boston interested in teaching Adobe's new In Design software. I was very pleased with my purchase of the Adobe InDesign Guide. I found it different from typical software guides because of its visual approach to learning. Plus, it's filled with practical information, tips, "crash courses," and more. I especially liked the "In a Hurry" section for quick references and getting started right away. This guide will be required reading for my future students, and I highly recommend it to other In Design users, from beginner to advanced.

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS
WITKOWSKI AND BOYLE WORKED AS A GREAT TEAM AS THEY WROTE THIS SECOND BRILLIANT PUBLICATION FOR ADOBE.

I WOULD SHOUT ITS PRAISES TO EVERYONE FROM THE TOP OF THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING. THE ADOBE INDESIGN GUIDE WAS BETTER THAN THE HELICOPTER SCENE IN MISS SAIGON.

World's Classics Abridgement?
I can't see why an abridgement is necessary for Pinnochio under any circumstances. The book is very short and no chapter could fill more than two typed pages. Any child should be able to digest the unabridged translation. When you strip a story down to a mere plot summary, you remove the details which make literature exciting and stimulating for both children and adults. Perhaps this is marketed toward extremely busy parents who don't have the five minutes it takes to read an entire chapter aloud.

Indeed this is a "World's Classic." I would like to see it preserved as the author intended.

Collodi good, abridgement bad.

This movie is so awsome!!!
I indeed agree that this movie is a wonderful movie, it was funny, and sad...but that just makes it even more great....I was wondering if anyone doesn't mind helping me, I need to buy the CD Soundtrack to this movie..Can anyone help me???

A story for and about children
Collodi knew how mischievous children can be.He was one himself when he went to school in Flroence. In his later years,he was a school reforms official, and wrote many textbooks. He believed the best way to teach is by entertaining as well. This certainly shows in Pinocchio. The little Blockhead gets into all kinds of scrapes because he rushes into things with little consideration.Pinocchio is tricked by the Fox&Cat, advised by the Talking-Cricket,helped by the Fairy with Blue Hair-and ultimately realizes that if he wants to become a real boy,his inner self must be transformed first. The final chapter is a true indication of how Pinocchio has fully become a son to Gepetto.Collodi's story has many film-television-stage versions, but the original is a true classic.

The adversary : the Christian versus demon activity

Dry Demonology
It's hard to believe that a book by a fundamentalist Christian about the Devil could be this dull. Usually the field of Satan-sniffing produces works filled with amusement, even hilarity, and massive evidence of human credulity. This book has only a vast vast number of Bible verses and a few anecdotes so un-lurid that they wouldn't even interest Pastor Fletcher Brothers on a dull day. It does, however, provide a good groundwork for understanding the philosophical basis of the fundy attitude towards demons - if you happen to care.

Warfare Basics
If there was one quick book you wanted to read on the subject of Spiritual Warfare, this would be it. It is to the point on most issues and easy to read. There are several great examples of types of warfare prayers and lists of what to look for as far as spiritual oppression. All in all a must for anyone who feels led to this ministry.

Excellent Bible-Based Study
This book is not about sensationalism and "demon" stories. In fact, the author strongly warns against such harmful interest in the occult. The Adversary is a totally Biblically-based study on "the world, the flesh and the devil" as revealed in Scripture. It focuses on the balance Christians should have between having an awareness of Satan and his schemes, while not giving him any glory by focusing more on him and his power than on his total defeat on the Cross. This is an excellent book regarding the authority of the believer. Christians need to know what the Bible says regarding this Enemy, so that we will not give place to him in any way. Praise the Lord for the victory He has already won!

AKIKO IN THE SPRUBLY ISLANDS
Published in Digital by Random House Children's ()
Author: Mark Crilley
Amazon base price: $3.99
Average review score:

a good read for a nine year old, fast-paced and entertaining
This second in the Akiko series is a pleasure in that it features a strong female figure as protagonist, a rarity in fiction for this age group. Yet just as the Harry Potter series appeals to girls despite the fact that its main character is a boy, my son enjoyed this book, and the previous one, even though Akiko is a fourth grade girl. The story is not particularly original, with parts reminding me of Star Wars, Gulliver's Travels, and The Wizard of Oz, but it kept my son's attention and made him want to read on.

The Quest Continues.....
Akiko, Mr. Beeba, Poog, Spuckler, and Gax return for another chapter in their quest to rescue the kidnapped Prince Froptoppit from the clutches of Alia Rellapor.

With characters and situations based on his long-running Comic Book Akiko, Writer/Illustrator Mark Crilley does a good job of presenting the reader with the information they may have missed by not reading the first book, but also manages to keep the plot moving forward. He also seems to be getting his children's-book writing chops built up, as I thought this book had a much better style than the first one. The art is great too; simple, yet detailed. The characters are fun, and the story is pretty gentle, so younger readers shouldn't find anything too scary.

Part 2 (of 4) of the Akiko adventures
This book continues where the first in this series of 4 left off: Earth-born fourth-grader Akiko and her interstellar adventurer friends are on an exciting mission to rescue a young prince who has been kidnaped by the story's as-yet-unseen villain, Alia Rellapoor. Akiko's journey takes her to the Sprubly Islands (hence the title), where she must confront the Sprubly monarch, Queen Pwip, for help in their quest. But danger and surprises lurk in the Sprubly Islands, and Akiko finds herself in an amazing adventure before she realizes it.

Mark Crilley, the author and illustrator of the Akiko novels (and comic from which the novels derive), is in better shape with this second book of the series, mostly because the necessary exposition has already been dealt with in book one. The plot flows quickly, and there is plenty of excitement to keep the story moving, without being too frightening for young children. Being part of a series may make the story hard to follow for those who don't know the story, but there is enough adventure and great storytelling moments to amuse even newcomers.

This book can be enjoyed as a group read with children (there are enough pictures and descriptions to captivate a young audience), or for solo readers who can handle a third- or fourth-grade reading level.

Misleading Title
Not until you open the book to the first chapter do you find out that the marks are limited to the period 1650--1850. No marks after 1850.

worth the price
Although limited in periods covered (stops at 1850), this is a handy, easy to carry reference. Kovel's may be more extensive, but the additional info is often not what you need in the middle of the antique mall checking out a possible purchase. I find I use both, write notes in both, and have many pieces I know are American and I can't find the marks in either. So, what the heck, for ten bucks it's worth having with you BEFORE you buy.

A very useful reference
For the time period covered (1650-1850) this is a very useful, almost exhaustive reference. I turn to it when I need to identify a hallmark, and find the illustrations to be very helpful. I thought it was a good buy.

Excellent
This book offers empiric data on the british banking industry and their IT-Architecture. I have got 6 Years of Consulting Experience and this really was one of the most useful books I ever studied. This is applied science at its best, and the empiric data in the book is worth a million $.

There is only one downside: The book states, that banks should stop investing in IT, as "IT creates value for customers but destroys profits". That is something I cannot believe. It seems that these strategy consultants were afraid of IT Consultants snatching their projects.

I found that this book was disturbingly bad
I is crap , just dont read i

good introduction and overview
Two experts are writing about their main focus of research. The result is a well-written introduction into int'l migration. A must for everyone interested in int'l migration.

Inciteful
Very well prepared. Miller and Castles not only provide the basis for understanding this complex issue, they provide thoughful analysis that takes this beyond what one would find in an introductory text.

This will serve as strong college textbook, while well-written enough to please those with a more casual interest in the subject.

Good book "If you have some experience with recording"
I bought this book for a class and for refrence at home for a setup I had just put together. I was a beginner when i had bought it and had little knowledge on the concepts of decibels, MIDI, signal flow, or the physics of sound,(which are some of the topics covered in this book).
After reading everything in the book more than once, I had no clue on what I had red until I bought a book called Home Recording Power by Ben Milstead.
Scot Wilkinson had written this book for those who are familiar with recording and wanted an idea or better understanding of how their equipment works the way it does. This book has very little tips or techniques on the equipment it covers. Its not a how to book.
So unless you have some form of a recording setup and are familar with your equipment and have done some projects already, dont buy this book, cause you wont understand very much.

Do I have the patience to want to sit down with this??
No-but, hey, to each his own. Right? Honestly, a very comprehensive book(much like a high-school science text book...outstanding). All meat with no potatoes. If you're studying to go into the field of engineering as a living or are an electronics genius, this review is sheer blaspheme. If you want to make good music on your home studio, get The Musician's Guide to Home Recording and a good dose of spirit- then press record. Peace.

A great book for starting your own home studio!!
This book gives a general overview of what you have to keep in mind when you want to start your own home studio. It describes theoretical concepts like acoustics as well as the more practical stuff like setting up proper electrical wiring. It also gives a clear overview of the different types of audio equipment you can encounter in your search for the perfect studio. The book is well structured and there are some ironic touches added as well.

horrible waste of time
I received this book, hoping to get some inside clues on how SOAP is implemented in .NET. I was running into some more sophisticated needs. I found the book to be full of general fluff. E.g., at the beginning it brings this corny motivation for SOAP that it's a better way for web page scraping. It actually believes that SOAP was made to replace code opening yahoo financials pages, and scraping stock quotes out of it. Hello? SOAP works along EDI and Corba. It's a simplified version of both that makes it easier and language/platform independent for those cases that don't need the full functionality of EDI or Corba.

Well, then there is a quote, where the author blankly asserts that posts are more useful then gets. I'm familiar with the debate about the pros and cons. But, an author just asserting one is better and putting as a reason 'trust me, baby, I'm smart', is just so pretentious.

To put it plain from flipping around in the book, I didn't find any good information, and the author just disgusted me with his way of writing and assertions. This is a total utter waste of time and money.

Good book, title could use some work
I really enjoyed this book but I think that the title was misleading. There was as much (or more) information about web services and .net as there was about soap.

Overall the book covered a broad set of topics and showed some good example code. If you're new to web services and soap, and you plan on using .net, this book will get you good coverage in a small amount of time. If you don't intend to use .net, there are still some interesting topics, but the sample code won't help much.

Great book on .NET and SOAP
Here's what you get in the book: you will learn how to use .NET in order to shape your SOAP messages. There's a lot to know and understand: manipulating XML, creating custom attributes, debugging, reading messages. This book covers all of those items in detail and has the code to save you time. The book tells me exactly what I needed to know in order to make better use of SOAP in my .NET applications. Kenn teaches this stuff for Wintellect and developed the course on this. It's also pretty clear that the day jobs for both these guys involves writing Web Services. When you are done with the book, you will understand all you need in order to write your own Web Services.

I read the two other reviews and I don't understand why the readers are complaining. SOAP is one way to do Web Services and is the only thing that the authors talk about in the entire book. Perhaps this reader has a problem with the fact that, for the most part, SOAP == Web Services? As for the horrible waste of time review, I again think that the person didn't really look at the book. This is the best book I have seen to date which describes how to mold your SOAP messages, write custom attributes, etc. These guys explain pretty well what SOAP is for. Better for Web Page scraping? I think that reviewer simply picked up a copy in a book store, read 2 pages, and that's it.

Aretha Franklin the Queen of Soul

Disappointing
This book is a great disappointment! Bego's sequel to The Queen of Soul happens to be nothing more than what he clips from past articles! If you value your money, don't buy this book. Because all you will read is his first book on her and just old articles about her.

Forever a Queen
After reading Ms. Frankin's lackluster autobiography, it was almost refreshing to read an unbiased account of the legendary life and career of this soul matriarch. This book is very detailed in tracking the career of Ms. Franklin and tells of the accolades as well as the lowpoints in her career. I found most comical the section in relation to Aretha's infamous fashion sense, but ultimately appauled by that tasteless photo of her in a one peice bathing suit with fishnet stockings showing her backside in concert. How disgusting was that!
I, too, hailed the Queen after her riveting performance of "Nessum Dorma" on the 1998 Grammys and I continue to follow her career in hopes that her legacy continues to be upheld with the upmost respect. I hope that in twenty years, the author can add another update of amazing accomplishments to this edition. Good read.

For students of twentieth century American music history
Now in an updated and expanded edition, Aretha Franklin: The Queen Of Soul is the compelling and inspiring biography of one of the most amazing, remarkable singers with a five-octave voice. The many challenges Aretha Franklin has faced in her life, from parental abandonment to the illness of her sister, are candidly recounted, along with her will to survive and prosper, which can clearly be heard in her soul-stirring music. Highly recommended reading for students of twentieth century American music history, as well as a "must" for all Aretha Franklin fans.
