Critique of cost-benefit analysis for environmental matters
Prof. Sagoff demonstrates the problematic nature of an economic approach to environmental decisionmaking. Even granting that we could quantify environmental values in dollar terms, he raises the important question of why we would want to do such a thing. The author argues that questions of balancing environmental values against other "goods" should be decided in the public political arena, and not by reference to people's private willingness to pay. Somewhat puzzling is Sagoff's adherence to a utilitarian philosophy; I'm still waiting for someone to point out the obvious liberty and distributive-justice problems with cost-benefit analysis in the sphere of environmental regulation.

A must have for anyone seeking to improve his life
This book, which was the very first one that introduced me to the works of Edgar Cayce, changed my life dramatically.

WHY IT'S GOOD: It's practical. One of my biggest complaints about the more popular self help books out there is that they tend to be all fluffy, idealistic, super New Age talk without any real, practical advice that you can use. Yeah, it's great to be pummeled to death with the idea that "with your mind," you can do anything you want to do. But in order to change your life, you still need practical solutions you can use. Luckily, this book is one of the rare New Age ones that is a happy balance between New Age ideas and practical wisdom. Even if you think there are some weird concepts in here that you might not cotton to, you will still walk away from it having learned some important practical things you can apply in your own life, like:

1. Setting ideals (instead of goals).

2. Looking at role models for inspiration (instead of "looking deep into yourself" and going, "I think I can, I think I can")

3. And learning to turn negative traits in yourself into something positive (this is a far cry from typical self help books which always tell you that you should only look at the positive in yourself).

This is an excellent book. Don't let its New Age-ness scare you (or the fact that its material was based on the readings of a psychic). ARE Press, the people who published this, produces the most practical, well thought out, and realistic personal growth books on the market today-- better than Chopra, better than Zukav, even better than Weil. You'll find no vague, mumbo-jumbo, pseudo wisdom here, but real down to earth advice. So please buy it! Your life will definitely change for the better.

Great reference for every educator and lawyer in education.
If I could have given this book 4 and a half stars I would have done so. The only complaint that I have about this tome is that many of the court cases that I am interested in are not printed in part or entirety in this book. I will have to go to the law library to get the rest of the information that I need. This book was not in my law classes, but rather in a class for school administrators. I am writing on and very interested in the legal history of education, and this was a great find for me. Not only does it give pertinent information about all educational law, but the specific references and legal issues are there for gender and race discrimination in schools, busing, special education, etc. Any teacher, researcher, or lawyer in this field cannot just pick up a book that is only on their area such as special education, because the full information is not there nor does it make sense out of context of legal history. In order to understand the reason why Congress and courts saw the need to coin a new law (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) rather than rely upon previous ammendments to other laws such as the Civil Rights Act and other education acts in the 1960's it is vital that the reader know the history and how those ammendments failed to guarantee educational rights for those with disabilities. This book is a vital reference that provides this information, the legal history, and it is well worth the money spent on it. Karen Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh

Urban delight
This book is the photographic equivalent to mythical eighties Dennis Cooper novel. Five American photographers, forerunners of their generation, each with a distinct style of his own yet sharing the same subject matters: urbanism, seperateness, violence, Aids, homosexuality, to name a few. These issues are dealt with through the use of portraits, mostly-urnban landscapes and youths. Though some shots are not as good as others, every artist here has at least 2 or 3 gems in his/her collection, and these gems make the book a must.

Encyclopedia of Artists' Signatures, Symbols & Monograms
This is a massive collection of signatures that is probably unequaled in any single reference. As a collector of moderately priced regional art, I found it lacking the examples I would be most interested in. On the other hand, the more famous and well known artists are represented well. This book is probably more suited to the experts rather than the weekend treasure hunter.

The Encylopedia of Furniture
The Encyclopedia of Furniture by Simon Yates, Constance King, and Mark Bridge is a wealth of information in a very readable information in a very readable format. It is laid out in sections by centuries with an introduction discussing the development of style of four major types of pieces- chairs, sofas, tables and desks. This information is conveyed by individual pieces of furniture noted with color photos, full descriptions including date, style, descriptions, materials used, and the name of the maker, if known. Enlightening details are given with these photos. Here are some examples: "Two other distinct Boston characteristics are the decorations on the knees of the cabriole legs and Rococo style made with a punch rather than carved with a chisel and the rat-claw feet, broadened to look more like a rat's paw than a lion's." With over 1000 illustrated pieces, this would be a good addition to your library.

A Multi-purpose Referancnce Book
While I am not a professional in this feild I have found this book remarkably help full in in understanding what these human behaviours are, the theories behind them, some of the medications that are/have been used in some cases and a few of the clinical studies that have been done in this feild.

The material is written in laymens terns and is arranged alphabtically. It would be of assistance to anyone wanting a better understanding of the feild or then student who is just starting their studies in college in this feild.

In my case the book has been and still is used in a most unusal way. I am referee for war gaming and have successfully used this referance with my players to prevent "perfect" characters from existing. The players in turn become so drawned to the book they wind up reading it and learning about this whole area!

This book would have recieved 5 stars except for the fact that the material is all listed as one listing: clinical, definitions, and Pharmacology (sp?). The book would have been better off as one book with several distinct sections.

Enemies of San Angelo

Enemies of San Angelo
Enemies of San Angelo is a support book for the San Angelo game universe by Gold Rush Games. It is designed specifically for the Champions RPG, but is easily adaptable for other RPGs. This book presents that all-important staple of Superhero RPGs, the supervillains. However, not content with presenting a run of the mill product, GRG has created villains that have realistic motovations, as well as full greyscale art. Each villain has advice on how to utilize him or her in a campaign, as well as a non-powered character that has motivations designed to interact with the villain. Sometimes the "normals" are friends of the supervillain, other times advisaries, but all of them are interested in the villains, and so should you be. This book is a great resource. The only problem I had with the book, was the cover art (which I was a little less than satisfied with) and one or two pieces of interior art. If not for that I would have given this book 5 stars, as it is I would still give it 4 1/2 stars.
