Although the author is a biologist by trade -- and one might think from the title that this is basically a biology book -- it would be a big mistake to think that this book is limited to the biology of these islands. In fact, this book is much broader than that. What Mr. Rauzon does is integrate many aspects of the islands' life and history into an eminently readable story.
This book works on so many levels: a cultural narrative, a historical account, a description of the flora and fauna, a memoir of the author's experiences, a photographic essay. Take any one of these aspects alone, and the author succeeds admirably. But the real beauty of this book is the way that the author weaves all of these elements together into a rich and fascinating story of these enchanting islands. (Personally, I'm partial to the exceptional collection of high-quality photographs which add life to the text. But they could also easily stand alone as a coffee-table photography book in their own right.) One more bonus is the inclusion of artwork by the highly-skilled author -- beautiful watercolors and pen-and-ink drawings.
The author has an easy personal style which makes this book read like an unfolding story. It is not a text book. Sure you'll learn some interesting facts, but that's not the point of this book. Mr. Rauzon allows us to experience the joy and wonder of these islands just as he has in his explorations and adventures over years.

If you have a toddler or love kids and how they can seem to be more adult than some adults, you will -love- this book.
The word on the street is that a second James collection will be coming out in Spring of 2003...keep your eyes peeled for another whopping dose of James goodness!
James is a unique character. A young kid with a huge personality and a great "dark" side that allows him to pursue new disaster with a smile. It really is a young kid discovering the world.
The drawings are clean and minimal great to read and probably look great on the newspaper too.
I look forward to the next book from Mark Tonra and "James", it muat be great!

I was amazed at how well the book was written (it's genuinely funny in spots), and how much attention to detail was evident in clear photos and well-done illustrations. This is a model for how such a book should be done.
There are seven projects in the book, from a simple solar-powered top to a rather sophisticated four-legged insect-like walker. Set-by-step instructions are given for each project, along with process photos and circuit diagrams.
One of the coolest things about BEAMbots is that they're often built from analog electronics scavenged from techno-junk (old solar calculators, Walkman, pagers, modems, etc.). Dave provides info on how to round up this junk and where to go for the parts you can't scrounge.
I think that making some of these little autonomous robo-critters and letting them scuttle and flail around in your office (seeking light, avoiding light, dodging obstacles) would be a great way of flexing your superior geek muscles. Make some of these babies and you'll be the envy of propellerheads everywhere!

The whole Ultron in charge thing was good, as was the blood and tragedy thing of a certain brother and sister. My only problem with this story: Where is Iron Man? Still, 5 stars for dropping that bomb on Avengers HQ.
This is a dark and gritty story and people die, It is somewhat related to "Earth X" in the way people have changed but this version of the future is darker and easier to get a handle on. Highest rating.
I particularly enjoyed the interview with Michael Dell. As a business owner, I could take and apply much of what he discussed to my business.
Overall, a very well done CD, with some fascinating guests, discussing what it takes to lead. I look forward to hearing the rest of the series.
