Coaching the Defensive Secondary
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall Trade (November, 1984)
Author: Mark A. Schuster
Amazon base price: $27.95
Average review score:

Very in depth and thorough analysis of pass defense roles.
This is a very detailed account of the various coverages any defensive backs coach, or defensive coordinator should know. The author goes into great depth detailing each assignment for a number of combinations of Covers 2, 3, 4, and Man Coverage. Great care is also given to detailing various situations that arise from Goal Line to a flexible Cover 3 that can be used when a team throws a totally unexpected formation at you. I would highly recommend this book as a classic. Possibly THE classic in this area. My only caveat is that it IS a classic. This book was written in 1984, before the modern explosion in pass formations, and the variations we call the West Coast and/or Run and Shoot Offenses. I only wish he would update this book and talk about some of the new developments in it.

This book will help your team win.
Mark McElroy covers every aspect of how to practice and implement the no-huddle offense to allow your offense to control the game. Since reading this book and implementing the no-huddle offense my teams have lost only two games in three seasons and are currently on a 10 game winning streak.

The first chapter explains the benefits of running a no-huddle offense. The number one reason is that you can control the pace of the game. You can actually run a no-huddle slow down offense to bleed the clock when you have a significant lead or hurry up to move the ball quickly when you are behind and need to score.

Mark McElroy gives several different examples of how to communicate the no-huddle signals to your players including dummy siganls to through off your opponents when they try to steal your signals.

The communication system is very simple yet it appears to be complicated to your opponents. The chapter on practicing the no-huddle is the best. It explains how using the no-huddle system in practice actually allows you to get more done in less time and increases your team confidence when you are in a situation where you must run a hurry-up offense.

Game Planning and Trouble shooting chapters are extremely useful to the success of the no-huddle system.

This book is an excellent value.

The Fish that Changed the World.....
It's hard to believe that anyone could write an interesting and informative book detailing the life and history of the cod fish, or more to the point, that it could hold your interest, but that's exactly what Mark Kurlansky has done. His fascinating and engaging narrative, based on his adult book, Cod: A Biography Of The Fish That Changed The World, explores this once plentiful fish's place in history, from the Vikings, Basques, and European explorers, to Colonial America, the slave trade, American Revolution, and the technological inventions of the twentieth century that changed fishing and processing forever. Written in an easy to read, conversational style, Mr Kurlansky's intriguing story is part biology, part history, part sociology, and is chock full of interesting fun facts, trivia, humorous anecdotes, maps, recipes, and a marvelous time line that runs through the entire book and puts all this information in perspective. S.D. Schindler's bright, bold, and charming artwork is clever and entertaining, and kids will enjoy poring over the busy illustrations, and finding all the wonderful, special details. Perfect for youngsters 8 and older, The Cod's Tale takes you on a whirlwind adventure, and a very unique thousand year journey with a most unromantic, though endearing fish. This is non-fiction for kids at its very best, and a book that definitely shouldn't be missed.

Great for kids!
I first caught sight of this book at my local library. Yes, I did borrow the book & took it home to read. The reason being, I was looking for some book to give my nephew, who is a hard-core Playstation gamer. I needed something to get him away from it, at least for a few weeks. I quite "enjoyed" the book, and decided that this was what the doctor ordered. Soon I did what was necessary, I ordered a copy of the book for my nephew, as his birthday present. I'm sure he expected me to get him a PS game. He was disheartend to see it was a book. However, after reading the book, he's become a "CRYPTO-MANIAC". He is so much in to encryption now, that whenever he goes to a book shop he looks for similar books. He's already told me about a few crypto-related books that he wants for Christmas. His mother is cursing me now for getting him the book, since he is to busy "decrypting messages" instead of doing his chores. Overall, a great book, excellent as a foundation and a really good "engrossing" read! Oh by the way, he's "earned" a lot of respect in his class, since he's the only who knows of all the "basic" ways to encode messages. Which is very important to the class, since they have all these clubs, and messages are sent in plain handwriting, and are complete gibberish to outsiders. A MUST BUY FOR KIDS!

Collateral Damage Rocks
Mark Manning loves women. He has just released a handbag sized book, so that it can be stuffed in along with the tissues, lipsticks, keys, fags, bits of envelope and Orbit sugar free, and so that just as he promises, he will always be with us. Ostensibly, this book is a journal of Zodiac Mindwarp and The Love Reaction's recent post-9/11 tour of the States. It documents their movements across the States and has some boss photos of the tour in action. But there is more than this between the covers.

Read carefully, be mindful of the substance abuse, be amused by the entertaining lies, muse upon the wordplay. But be more careful to identify the truth, as when you find it, it is profound, and will make your heart soar and sink by turns. Mr Manning can see all that is inspirational and sickening on planet earth and inside himself, and he weaves it into cartoons and parables to sustain the rest of us who are cursed with artistic and economic cataracts. True prophets acknowledge that sometimes the wheat will fall on stony ground, but I really rated this little book for it's beautiful mess, cynical chuckles and especially for the queeny bickering and tramp fighting.

Collected Papers of Bertrand Russell: Pacifism and Revolution, 1916-18

Betrand Russell: pre-eminent pacifist and socialist
World War One was an epoch-making event which transformed the philosophy of Bertrand Russell from based mainly on logic, mathematics and epistemology to haumanitarian issues such as pacificism, freedom and the role of the state. "Collected Papers of Bertrand Russell: Pacifism and Revolution, 1916-18" provides glimpses into this transition and elucidates Russell's main arguments for pacifism and socialism: "No good to the community, of any sort or kind, results from the private ownership of land. If men were reasonable they would decree that it should cease tomorrow..." As private property is protected by the State, and the fraud and plunder that constitute property are sanctioned by legislation and enforced by weapons and war, Russell argued that the State is therefor a great evil and its functions must be taken over by community-based cooperatives and worker's syndicates. Fascinating, provocative and necessary reading.

Colonial Latin America
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (October, 1997)
Authors: Mark A. Burkholder, Lyman L. Johnson, and Johnson Burkholder
Amazon base price: $62.95
Used price: $32.34
Average review score:

A good survey of colonial Latin America
If you are a novice in the study of colonial Latin America, this book is a good place to start. Burkholder and Johnson have covered just about every aspect of society and politics in colonial Latin America from pre-Columbian cultures to the struggles for independence in the 1800's. The book covers religion, slavery, the environmental impact of Europeans, government structures, gender roles, racial issues, economics, and family history as well as developments back in Europe that had reverberations in Latin America. One very helpful aspect of the book is that unfamiliar Spanish terms are in italics and a glossary of all such italicized words can be found in the back of the book. Most people have heard of Cortes, Montezuma, and Pizarro, but Burkholder and Johnson are especially strong on the less familiar story of what happened once the Spanish and Portuguese had taken control in the New World. This book covers only Spanish and Portuguese America, so if you are interested in the French, Dutch, or English enclaves in the Caribbean, you will need to look elsewhere. Specialists will be familiar with all the themes in this book, but for beginners it is an excellent introduction to the subject. Burkholder and Johnson periodically update the book so as to keep it on the cutting edge of current scholarship. Anyone interested in doing more research will also benefit from up-to-date bibliographies at the end of each chapter.
