Good resource
I happened upon this title in my college town's used book-store and even though I had read (and owned) previous historical accounts of the GLBT movmenet, I was drawn to the fluid layout of the book.

Befiting the sponsoring magazine's name, this book does not simply chronicle the past, but inspires readers to become contributors for a better future. Also helpful is the concious decision to focus on events in the entire country, as opposed to only the East and West Coasts.

The only problem I had with the book was the selective ommission of interviews towards the present day. In 1993, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain vocally expressed his support for GLBT freedom/opposition to Oregon's homophobic Ballot Measure 9 (among other progressive views) in a cover-story/interview, but nothing was mentioned about his influence on our generation in a time when the right was flush with zeal attempting these strategies, themselves trying to influence the youth vote.

Buy It And Read It!
Mark Ammerman has captured a slice of time and a fascinating cast of men and women and convincingly and sensitively drawn them on a colorful canvas 300 pages long. "Longshot," Ammerman's third in the historical fiction series, "The Cross and the Tomahawk," is the best crafted of his well-researched and authentic sagas.

The quick-flowing narratives follow the lives of the Narragansett Indians of Rhode Island from the time of their first encounter with the European whites to the conversion of many to Christianity, and their spiritual, physical, and societal trials and triumphs through generations of interaction with the dominant white culture. As we follow Christopher Long, Caleb Hobomucko, and Conestoga Joe from New England to the Ohio in 1750, we are treated to a slice of God's country in the mid 18th century.

Ammerman has crafted an interesting array of wide-ranging characters who show the full spectrum of human strengths and foibles. He convincingly depicts the humor and pathos of diverse races and cultures interacting in both strife and individual harmony while seeking personal meaning in their own lives.

The prose manages a fluid balance of period dialect while incorporating authentic Native American words and geographic place names. Historical notes, a bibliography, and glossary of terms assist the readers.

This book, and the ones preceding it in the series, are entertaining, enlightening, and educational. Buy 'em and read 'em!

This is a hardcore crime novel about how an ordinary cop becomes corrupt. When detective Don Corwin finds himself hopelessly enmeshed, he tries to get out...by confessing to a crime commission. This book got strong reviews from critics and cops alike. It's good stuff. I oughta know. I wrote it.

Good focusing tool for professional photographers
This shorter book was an easy read focusing on how to make a living at photography as a business. It focus' on working smart from a former financial consultant and bank auditor. Mark does not get excessively technical, but maps out how to look at your business from a numbers perspective. The key number is how much goes into your pocket. A big advocate of lifetime value of a customer and Cost of Goods Sold. His biggest message, is work to live, not live to work, so work smart. A balanced life will lead to a more productive (and financially fulfilling life).

Great book for new OSX users.
If you are Mac user new to OS X, this is a perfect book for you. Actually, if you just bought a new mac, and have no experience with a Mac whatsoever, this book is for you too. It's got a nice little overview of the technical components of the new mac os, how classic is used within it, and then goes over every section piece by piece(Applications, Networking, File system, Customization, Security, Troubleshooting, etc). It even gets into some of the more technical aspects of OS X such as Java and a list of UNIX commands and what they do. This is definitely not a book for expert users, but overall, it's a great book for an introduction to OS X.

Macintosh Pascal Programming Primer: Inside the Toolbox Using Think Pascal
Published in Paperback by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (January, 1991)
Authors: Dave Mark, Cartwright Reed, and David Mark
Amazon base price: $26.95
Used price: $7.50
Average review score:

This book is very easy to read, especially for a tech guide.
The Macintosh Programming Primer is especially helpfull for making your Pascal programs shine with that certain "Mac" look. It goes into detail about how to do everything from Dialog Boxes in ResEdit to how to incorporate asynchronous sound into your program. It's saved my butt a few times on major high school products, and MUCH easier to read than THINK reference, or Inside Mac. The only short coming to this book is that it is a bit out of date. It only supports toolbox thingys that where in system 6 and below, though it does do a very good job explaining them and their history.

An excellent resource and a pleasure to read
This book chronicles the work of several female artists from 1970 through 1985. It demonstrates how conditions have improved for women artists, as well as defining areas where improvement is still needed, such as one-person exhibitions. Backed by statistics, included for reference, this book is a great tool for further scholarship on female artists. Also includes many color photos of the magnificent work by these diverse artists, too numerous to list.

Male Homosexuality in Modern Japan: Cultural Myths and Social Realities

A well-written book
This book provides a straight-forward and well-written account of male homosexual culture in Japan. I use it as one text among many in a college-level course taught in Japan and have had good results with classroom discussions. Unlike many other works in queer theory and gay and lesbian studies, it is the sort of book that undergraduate students can read, understand and critique. As a sociologist, I am somewhat troubled by the small sample size McLelland employs in his descriptions of male homosexual culture, but the sample does represent a variety of lifestyles that allows McLelland to dispell prevalent images of homosexual men. Moreover, much of the book is an insightful account of representations of male homosexuality in media culture, with an unusally clear sociological critique. Overall, I recommend the book for readers interested in contemporary male homosexuality in Japan.
