Robert Jackall focuses his sociologist's eye on a localized crime wave amongst Dominicans living in Washington Heights. He begins with the brutal acts of wanton murder that lie at the center of the book. From there he casts his net ever wider until the reader slowly grasps the big picture.
To someone such as me, living in Britain, this is a very alien landscape. The casual acts of extreme violence, the industrial scale drug dealing, and the regular open gunplay on the streets of the Big Apple read almost like something from a Hollywood script rejected for lack of authenticity. The title, Wild Cowboys, is well chosen both for the gang that adopted the name and for its portrayal of urban mayhem.
By the end of the book the reader has a good grasp of the complex social relationships on the block, the reasons for all the extravagant machismo, and the extraordinary difficulty facing police officers investigating such crimes. Jackall does an excellent job of tracking relationships - even if he does let his unalloyed admiration for NYPD officers shine through rather often. But, hey - those guys need all the help they can get after their recent regular bad press.
I did struggle a little in the middle of the book when I thought I was going to be overwhelmed by names of new characters constantly joining the tale. However, ends are brought together well at the conclusion when Jackall traces how a wall of criminal solidarity cracks wide open to resolve itself in a series of guilty pleas.
If the cast list of War and Peace put you off reading Tolstoy - give this one a miss!
My primary reason for buying this guide was to find some of the things I missed before and discover new secrets. -Not only does this accursed guide NOT describe any of those things, it's actually completely in error in some of its descriptive points.
The only thing this guide does do is provide you with a very basic walkthrough; which is completely useless to anyone intelligent enough to play Wizardry 8.
So...I've plunked down my cash for this piece of trash, now what? -Guess it's time to go out and get myself a puppy...at least this guidebook will make a good chewtoy; it's nice and thick, chock full o' pictures with their descriptions-for some idiotic reason-placed on the previous page.
It also has Alchemy and Gadgetry formulas, which is nice if you don't enjoy experimenting with that sort of thing. The regular manual is exceptionally good on things like classes, skills, and spells, so those chapters don't add much.
The walkthrough isn't 100% accurate in the case of what items you may get, particularly out of chests where there's some randomness, but it does seem to cover all the plot points and major points of interest.
I haven't easily found any great online resources for this game, and there's definite potential to get stuck, so I'd say this book is useful.

This book will not satisy anyone who wants a good look at YSL's output over the past 40 years. If you are a fan of "fashion photography," you might like this book. If you are a fan of YSL, you will not. I wish I hadn't bought it.
The title of this book is Yves Saint Laurent: 40 Years of Creation, but the main focus of the book is the designer's work from the 1990s. There is very little from earlier. This was fine with me as I prefer the work from the 90s, but, if you want a true retrospective on ALL his work, this book is not it.

I bought this book to accompany me on my European flea market travels. It is a reprint of a book originally published in 1937. So all of the markings are for things that are much older than I'm likely to find in our local flea markets. However, should I come across one, I'll be ready for it. :)
Another issue is the software. The "text" file contained many items not included in the book, and vice versa. This was confusing.
I think the authors should either revise the book to be more contemporary with adolescent populations, and/or publish a similar "planner" for the pre-teenager.
