Takes a lot of effort...
...to make a story about a quadruple homicide tedious! The author clearly logged a lot of hours researching this book, hanging out with cops. Nonetheless, the end result is a book book that would work well as a drinking game: Take a sip everytime the author introduces another name, another bit of non-essential info. Down your mug o' beer/glass of milk everytime the author reveals his pro-cop abuse of power bias.

How disappointing.

Urban gunplay under the microscope
This is not an easy book to classify. The reviews from NYT and Kirkus are not flattering but I feel those reviewers lost the plot a little. Just calling this book an "unremittingly wooden tale" suggests that it was intended as entertainment rather than as piece of scholarly research.

Robert Jackall focuses his sociologist's eye on a localized crime wave amongst Dominicans living in Washington Heights. He begins with the brutal acts of wanton murder that lie at the center of the book. From there he casts his net ever wider until the reader slowly grasps the big picture.

To someone such as me, living in Britain, this is a very alien landscape. The casual acts of extreme violence, the industrial scale drug dealing, and the regular open gunplay on the streets of the Big Apple read almost like something from a Hollywood script rejected for lack of authenticity. The title, Wild Cowboys, is well chosen both for the gang that adopted the name and for its portrayal of urban mayhem.

By the end of the book the reader has a good grasp of the complex social relationships on the block, the reasons for all the extravagant machismo, and the extraordinary difficulty facing police officers investigating such crimes. Jackall does an excellent job of tracking relationships - even if he does let his unalloyed admiration for NYPD officers shine through rather often. But, hey - those guys need all the help they can get after their recent regular bad press.

I did struggle a little in the middle of the book when I thought I was going to be overwhelmed by names of new characters constantly joining the tale. However, ends are brought together well at the conclusion when Jackall traces how a wall of criminal solidarity cracks wide open to resolve itself in a series of guilty pleas.

If the cast list of War and Peace put you off reading Tolstoy - give this one a miss!

WILD COWBOYS , URBAN MARAUDERS AND THE FORCES OF ORDER
In WILD COWBOYS mr. Jackall has captured a very accurate portrait of the world I work in every day. As a law enforcement officer working in New York City I can confirm that based on my own experiance, the confusing list of actors and aliases that some editorial reviewers have complained of are, in fact, common in complex criminal conspiracies and I feel that Mr Jackall has done a fair job of trying to present a clear picture of the Red Top crew. His portrayal of a world where lethal violence is commonplace and telling someone your real name is the highest form of trust is unequalled.A reader who wants a picture of the difficulties involved in the investigation of an actual complex criminal conspiracy rather than the neat melodramas wrapped up in an hour of television would do well to to read Wild Cowboys.

Useless [book]
The writers and publishers of this guide should be ashamed. There is nothing wihin its pages that can't be found out by simply playing the game through.
My primary reason for buying this guide was to find some of the things I missed before and discover new secrets. -Not only does this accursed guide NOT describe any of those things, it's actually completely in error in some of its descriptive points.
The only thing this guide does do is provide you with a very basic walkthrough; which is completely useless to anyone intelligent enough to play Wizardry 8.
So...I've plunked down my cash for this piece of trash, now what? -Guess it's time to go out and get myself a puppy...at least this guidebook will make a good chewtoy; it's nice and thick, chock full o' pictures with their descriptions-for some idiotic reason-placed on the previous page.

not bad
I found the book real useful. The is a lot of "fluff" in the beginning of it: lists of spells, races, classes etc., but the second half of the book is good. It gives you lots of useful information about the various areas and monsters in the game, and of course maps, and I found this information to be accurate. The game is so non-linear that the walthrough is pretty much guaranteed to not match your game completely, but it still gives you what you need to get past the areas where you get stuck.

Useful!
This is definitely the kind of game a hintbook is useful for. There are a lot of puzzles. What do I do with that Alter? How do I open that strange lock? Sometimes, you have to come back much later in the game, and sometimes you can't progress until you figure it out - being able to know if I should worry about something now or later is worth the price of the book.

It also has Alchemy and Gadgetry formulas, which is nice if you don't enjoy experimenting with that sort of thing. The regular manual is exceptionally good on things like classes, skills, and spells, so those chapters don't add much.

The walkthrough isn't 100% accurate in the case of what items you may get, particularly out of chests where there's some randomness, but it does seem to cover all the plot points and major points of interest.

I haven't easily found any great online resources for this game, and there's definite potential to get stuck, so I'd say this book is useful.

Too big, too expansive and too superficial
If you want to introduce yourself in Database Programming, DO NOT buy this book. It is too big and too superficial. It tries to cover verything (html, cgi, DB wizards, html editors, search engines, etc), but doesn't cover well any of the topics.

A Very Helpful and Thorough Book
If you need to get a start in the database development, internet-enabled client tools and other database-application related areas, this is a great starting point. The material is obviously old, but provides abundance of information for a quick read to get the terminology. Forms a respectable foundation to start the task...

Lots of Web-specific Detail for the Advanced Programmer
>>Layout: good and easy to follow >>Content Relavence: I found the material to be very well put together and relavent to the topic of web related database design >>Examples: While not as detailed as a beginner would have liked, the examples were sufficient enough for an intermediate to advanced programmer to follow (hence the book's "Accomplished to Expert" User Level rating. >>Accompanying CD-ROM: Good examples with lots of source to see just how it's done.. This went a long way in assisting me in understanding other (larger) databases in Perl and Rexx. >>Price/Value: A bit pricey (but then again every technical book in Canada is). I found it close to the worth the money that I paid!

Hardly necessary
As strategy guides go, this one definitely has it all. It gives complete walkthroughs of every level, every object, and every boss battle. This book even includes some Yoshi history and other silly tricks. Who could ask for more? Apparently you've gotten too much. Yoshi's Story is an already extremely easy game. Slapping a strategy guide to it is pointless. Games this easy don't need strategy guides! Yes, it's nice to know where every secret is hidden, but isn't that why we explore video games? Personally, I feel strategy guides demean from the purpose of owning a video game in the first place. And with a simple game like Yoshi's Story, it should be downright embarrassing to own one. This particular book has an awesome setup, but it was made for the wrong game. Keep looking.

A book for photography fans, not for fans of YSL.
I was very disappointed in this book. I expected a deluxe photographic retrospective on the work of one of the greatest fashion designers of this century. Instead, the focus of the book is on "fashion photography" and not on YSL's work. The photos are "artistic," which means they are often murky, blurry, dark, weird, and even violent (especially two Terry Richardson photos of "dead" models--one made up to look as though she were slashed to death).

This book will not satisy anyone who wants a good look at YSL's output over the past 40 years. If you are a fan of "fashion photography," you might like this book. If you are a fan of YSL, you will not. I wish I hadn't bought it.

Okay photography, but not a 40-year retrospective
The photography is decent the majority of the time. There are some really weird photos where you can't see a thing, and there is more than one occasion where there is nudity. I would not call this great photography, and I wish it had been more focused on the couture and not the models.

The title of this book is Yves Saint Laurent: 40 Years of Creation, but the main focus of the book is the designer's work from the 1990s. There is very little from earlier. This was fine with me as I prefer the work from the 90s, but, if you want a true retrospective on ALL his work, this book is not it.

Congratulations for a great retrospective on YSL
What a good idea to have shown the relation between this great designer and those great photographers since he was the first couturier that understood the power of photography in fashion. What I liked the most is the mixture between those young artists and their predecessors. I recommend this book to anyone who loves fashion, photography and the way these two interact.

1100 Marks on foreign pottery & porcelain
Very good if your looking for very old marks

Worthwhile for older markings
This book has a terrific layout. The right page has 50 or more markings while the left page lists easily referenced details. Unfortunately, the details can be sketchy. For example, (one listing) Paris, some factory, Charles Phillipe or (another listing) Sceaux? or Bourg la Reine? Doubtful.

I bought this book to accompany me on my European flea market travels. It is a reprint of a book originally published in 1937. So all of the markings are for things that are much older than I'm likely to find in our local flea markets. However, should I come across one, I'll be ready for it. :)

A disappointing contribution to an otherwise strong series
I purchased this item because of other books in the Practice Planners series. I have a number of the homework planners, which I use frequently. The software included allows the clinician to revise and customize the forms. I bought this item because more than 50% of my practice is with adolescents; I was very disappointed. First, the exercises are more appropriate for pre-teens (ages 10 through 13) than for teenagers. Some exercises could be used for even younger ages. For example, there is a section on enuresis and encopresis; I do not know many teenagers with bowel control problems (pre-teens, maybe). Another example is in the section on depression. In an exercise called "Surface Behavior/Inner Feelings," there is a narrative about a boy and his teacher. The boy is described as a sixth grader. That would make him 11 or 12 most likely. The story was good, and I used it - but I had to change the age, grade, and a few other details to make it applicable to my 16 year old client. That is not to say that none of the exercises are appropriate for teens (ex: the No Self Harm contract), but certainly the majority are geared toward younger ages. Even they way they are written suggests a young audience, not a teenage one. In addition, there are no exercises regarding drug use, peer pressure, ethical decision making, or sexuality (except gender identity disorder).

Another issue is the software. The "text" file contained many items not included in the book, and vice versa. This was confusing.

I think the authors should either revise the book to be more contemporary with adolescent populations, and/or publish a similar "planner" for the pre-teenager.

Good activites to personalize for clients
I am pleased that a disk with the activities comes with the book. I often need to personalize the activities and my clients seem to appreciate it as well. This book was especially helpful since my agency uses the Therascibe software, which encourages the use of this book for homework.

Dragged On
well, reading this book I felt like it was way too long! It was dragged on and on until you got sick of Huck and Jim always escaping and crap. Man, it is a waste of time. I didn't enjoy it. How dumb are the people that they don't find anything suspicious about a slave and little white boy together on a raft. They also fall for some pretty dumb lies!! Don't read it.. unless you have to for a class.. That's what I had to do!

Very exciting book!!!
I think that this book is exciting but is too long. This story had very rounded off characters that you could understand. I recemend this book because it is funny yet get it's points across you in the story

A little misleading , marks are mostly for silver and gold antiques, not very many porcelain marks.

Great pocket size book
This book is very handy to take with you to garage sales, swap meets and antique sales. Very well organized and easy to use.

Tantra Lite
One of the few titles on this subject I could find that included photographs, but very disappointing. The models are bland and distant-looking; they don't seem spiritually or sexually involved. And the text was so light-weight, I have gotten better, more complete information from articles. Perhaps enough for someone who wants a taste of the exotic, but not challenging enough intellectually or spiritually.

Incredibly helpful book
This book is wonderful because it works to channel energy from the immediate experience into a prolonged, full body sacrament of love. The Tantrikas knew what they were talking about when they included all five senses, meditation. exercises, etc. The first time my husband and I applied these techniques, it was the most profound lovemaking night of our lives (8 is great!).
