An American Humorist writes about Americans
Mark Twain is the quintesential American curmudgeon. His style formed an era and no one could ever reproduce him although many have tried. Read the book and meet the Man. I laughed out loud and at times was gripped with the wringing unrelenting pathos of this great master. I had to laugh at myself a time or two...

Well written and incredibly helpful
Our company, like many others, has gone through merges, acquisitions, downsizings, and other transition. Marks, who is an independent consultant based in San Francisco with experience in over 100 organizational transitions, has written an outstanding book that tells how to revive employee morale, workteam performance, and organizational effectiveness following difficult transitions. Marks knows his stuff--his approach is well grounded in organizational behavior theory, but he presents it in a straight forward way. And, he offers numerous case studies from companies like Pfizer, Seagrams, Qualcomm, and Kyocera.

Marks presents a model for helping employees let go of the baggage they gathered from mismanaged mergers and difficult downsizings, so they can look forward to "charge up the hill" and achieve desired business results. This book is a must for any senior executives who has led a company through a difficult period--or for one who has taken over a firm after a merger or other tough period. It also is very helpful for middle managers and other employees. Marks shows them how to focus on what they can control over their work situation rather than fret about what they cannot control.

The book is enlightening, helpful, and not jargony. Am I gushing too much? Let me just say that after I read it, I bought ten copies of the book for my team!

An absolute must have
I probably own a ton of instructional jazz-guitar books and the difference between any other book and this one, is that here you get up and running directly.

The author has really taken his time to figure out the optimum fingerings for the heads and solos. And to my suprise I hear my self running thru anthropology like a hot knife thru butter.

Belive me I experimented with other fingerings, but I hitherto have found the authors suggestions to be optimized.

Perhaps there are books that goes deeper into the theoretical aspect of Charlie Parkers music, but I personally think it's more fun to learn to play it first and only then analyse it.
Otherwise it's easy to get stuck ( and bored).

I cannot recommend this book enough. It's the best!
I hope and pray that the author will follow up with another one, (why not a book with Dizzy solos the next time?). When it comes I will definetly buy it. Until then, this book provides for plenty of magical moments.

Buy it and have fun.

A very lucid, witty book
Mark Allan Powell's Chasing the Eastern Star is an excellent book! Powell's purpose is to explain the purpose and method of reader-response criticism as it relates to biblical studies.

The last part of the book, uses the method of reader-response criticism to examine the story of the magi in the Gospel of Matthew. He reaches some surprising conclusions regarding the magi.

Powell's book is worth reading for the scholar, preacher, or educated lay person. He explains the potentially boring and difficult concept of reader-response criticsm in a very witty and lively manner. The only wittier bible scholar around may be Stephen Moore (read God's Gym to see what I mean).

Now that I have finished the adventure of reading Chasing the Eastern Star, I am ready for more biblical adventures regarding the bible and reader response criticsm.

A tai chi master's thoughts on the world
Cheng Man-ch'ing wrote this series of essays to make various points of classical Chinese philosophy understandable to beginning readers. Hennessy does a wonderful job in translating this work so it is smooth and easy to read. He also tracks down the classical references for each essay, providing a context for a western reader without the necessary background. I found this work fascinating, as a discussion of the philosophy of Cheng. It is well worth a look for anyone interested in an interpretation of Chinese philosophy, or of Cheng Man-ch'ing himself.

A great look at Cheng's talents beyond tai chi
Master of Five Excellences is a wonderful book for anyone who wishes to learn more about the tai chi master Cheng Man-ch'ing. Cheng has always been an interesting figure to me, for his skill in tai chi, as well as for his skills as an artist and scholar. Hennessy's translation is smooth and easy to read. It gives readers a taste of Cheng's abilities in poetry, painting, calligraphy, tai chi and medicine. The work also includes color prints of some of Cheng's paintings as well as reproductions of his calligraphy. Perhaps most interestingly for me, as someone who has worked to mesh my academic studies with my practice of tai chi, it shows how Cheng incorporated all of his arts into a coherent world view.
