A look at the fighting men of the Second World War
"Going to War in World War II" has a lot to cover in examining how armies, navies, and air forces lived and fought together during the biggest armed conflict in human history. The result is that Moira Butterfield can only touch on some of the fascinating aspects of the Second World War. For example, the start of the war is reduced to the concept of blitzkrieg ("lightning war"). The "chapters" of this book are basically two-page spreads on topics such as Wolfpacks and Warships, Life at Home, and D-Day. The focus is more on the ordinary fighting men than the famous generals and on details more than the history of the war itself. Consequently, "Going to War in World War II" is not intended as an introduction to the war, but rather as a way of providing young readers interested in the topic and who already know its basic history more details about what it was like for the fighting men.

The Armies of the Past series also looks at the fighting forces of World War II, Ancient Egypt and Greece, Roman and Viking Times, as well as the 18th and 19th centuries. The books are primarily illustrated with lots of paintings and drawings, along with some black & white photographs of the period.

lovely!
I would actually give this book 4.5 stars if I had the choice, but not 5. The poems are very different and original. All of them had a certain specialness, a deepness, if you will, that made them worth-while to read. My personal favorites are "I once saw a man pursuing the horizon", "A postcard from the volcano", and "Observation Car".

Reading Mark Made Easy
The author is parish priest of the country town of Donald, in the Diocese of Ballarat, Australia. In fact, while obviously not as well known as a number of Australian biblical scholars, such as Francis Moloney, Fr 'Pat' Flanagan has been conducting scripture workshops for both laity and his fellow priests for many years and is a consultant to the National Liturgical Commission in Australia. Flanagan has immersed himself in contemporary scholarship about the Scriptures, and specifically the Gospel of Mark, but his primarily concern, arising from his work as a pastor, is to communicate to his readership the central meaning of Mark according to its original audience and its significance for contemporary Christians. He has produced an excellent introduction to this important but at times confusing book of the New Testament, inviting a close reading of the Gospel text, and supplying copious notes for those wishing to take their exploration of Mark further.

Important book for understanding international telecom orgs
Zacher and Sutton have gathered together all of the necessary ingredients for understanding international regime theory. I found the section on communications particularly important. My one suggestion would be to summarize some of the material into tables to make the interrelationships between institutions more understandable. Also, visual timelines would be a great addition. I highly recommend this text.

The Gramophone Musical Good CD Guide

Not perfect but useful and enjoyable
Among my prides and joys is my collection of Broadway shows and operettas on CD. Therefore I very much like the (Gramophone Publications Limited, 1998) with its 264 pages of comments about just about every Broadway show ever committed to CDs. Where there are several versions, the editors have selected either all or some, in the latter case referring us to a list of "Also available" recordings. Therefore this guide makes no pretense to being complete in any sense.

Nevertheless it is quite valuable for what it does review. There remains the question of what is not. Although I debate the inclusion of Gilbert & Sullivan into "musicals," I do think that as long as they are included, more of the available recordings should get full treatment and not merely listed as "also available." Another problem is that many CDs available only in Great Britain are included and given glowing reviews, increasing my frustration level greatly.

On the positive side, the guide is organized by composer in alphabetical order with a short biography before the reviews proper; and there is an index of shows in alphabetical order to make life easier. (How many musicals are there with composers whose names spring to mind?) I also appreciate having the timings for each CD, which allows us to pass up an expensive import that runs (say) only 35 minutes. I like reading about the concert entries such as the "Kiri Sings ..." series and the soundtracks such as that of the 1946 "Ziegfeld Follies." Yes, their use of "musicals" is not limited to stage presentations, and includes screen versions of musicals as well as compilations such as "Lullaby of Broadway" that offers up selections from Busby Berkeley films. And for those who already own earlier editions, each new review is labeled as such.

So like its big brother, "The Gramophone Classical Good CD Guide," this is not a perfect but a very useful tool for the collector. I even find it fun to read! But to each his own.

Fascinating Review of Turn of the Century American Ingenuity
Mr. Bernstein does a great job bringing to life the interactions among the Wright Brothers, Boss Kettering, and John Patterson in turn of the century Dayton, Ohio. Did you know John Patterson (founder of National Cash Register)invented the canned sales pitch and direct mail marketing? And the way the book covers the five year period it took the Wright Brothers to concur flight is spellbinding. I have purchased five copies of this book to give to various friends, all of whom loved it.

A great introductory review of graphic design principles
This is a great introductory review of basic graphic design principles. The subjects covered include: foreground/background, form, structure, juxtaposition of elements on a page, gestalt perceptual theory, hierarchy, and typography. There is a bit of history, color theory, and computer-related issues. Overall, this is a sound book to recommend to an introductory graphic design class.

The book was good.
I gave the story The Great Pony Hassle four stars because of some funny parts like on pg.9 when Staci and Toni were telling each other to shut up. I understood the book and Paisley's and Toni's feelings about Noodles the pony. It was not fair becaue in the beginning Paisley was the only girl to have a pony.
