Absolutely brilliant.
Making history accessible to everyone is not only a rare talent but a great service to the public, and this is a book that can be enjoyed by everyone. It is full of wit, insight, wonderful illustrations and photographs. It captures the most important political details of the last five centuries in a way that brings home to the reader the true historical significance of events many of us have only ever heard or read about from a single (authorized) perspective. Much of history is so bloody and disturbing that it can deter people from delving into it. Mark Almond's book is gripping enough to prevent readers from turning away from the horrors, and the importance of that should not be underestimated. We all have a responsibility to be aware of the real causes behind the great tragedies in human history. The great revolutions of the last 500 years have occurred at such a horrendous cost to mankind that for any of us to simply sit back and say "that could never happen again, not in this day and age" would be tantamount to criminal negligence. How many people predicted the terrors, wars and famines of the last half millennium? As the author writes in the opening chapter, "Complacency has rarely been a good prophet." Taking those words to heart, any reader of this book should find he or she has the impetus to read on. As an added bonus, the reader should find tremendous enjoyment in turning the pages.

This is the Revolutionary Book.....!
If you want to know about revolution around the world you should read this book...

It's brilliant!!!
Revolution-500 yrs of struggle for change is an excellent review of some of the most influencial revolutions that have ever happened. I love this book as it is so informative and intresting. EXCELLENT BOOK!!!
...aaahhhh yes. An excellent book of poetry submitted in paperback by one man who has endured the modern-day working-class blues of adulthood and life in general. It's a great alternative for people who are searching for a sense of humor in these tormented times. UNCLE GEEZER ROCKS!!!

EXCELLENT BOOK!!!
Aahhh yesss... An excellent poetry book about the trials and tribulations of the modern-day working-class man and how to deal with his crisis. A must-read for people who needs a sharp and humorous view on how to deal with their torments and disgruntled situations in these modern times. A modern-day blues saga for the ages.

A literary voice from Salinas not heard since Steinbeck.
Mr. Gurley does an excellent job capturing the world around him, whether it be the local coffee shops, the denizens of his home town, or his personal trials and tribulations. Such poetry is rarely found in the PC/sterile age of the nineties. It is good to know we are exiting this century with a promising artist, thereby giving us hope for the new millenium.

a must read book
A must buy book for any reader that wants their hum drum life turned upside down. Many of us at one time have been like Lars,
going with the flow of life, carrying unfullfilled dreams and seeking fullfillment in life. The great news is like Lars it is waiting for us to grasp and then to share. Cecil Kemp shows how to search and find a life full of meaning and significance.
A wonderful book.

A Lesson For All
If you are not satisfied with where you are in life, this book is for you. If you ARE satisfied, this book is for you! For those searching for direction, this book provides it. More importantly, those who are simply satisfied with their station in life, this book will provide you with a guide and the inspiration to seek even more. Here you will find the roadmap to true joy instead of everyday happiness.
A thoroughly enjoyable book, one that is very difficult to stop reading. The story is one of fiction, but the lesson is one of powerful truth. It focuses on those of us who have simply accepted the status quo...that we are to accept what we have always done as the best way. It will inspire you to seek a better way, a better life.
This is my second Cecil Kemp book and there will definitely be more to follow. Read this book, get out of your comfort zone and find the joy in life that is available to those who seek it!

Jumping Tracks
Lars, the main character of this book was stuck in a rut of habit and tradition. So was his entire village. Nothing had changed there for generations. Then one day, Lars climbed the mountain that towered over his village. Part of the way up he met an old woman in her "secret meeting place." Was she real or a dream? Was she wise or crazy? Lars struggled to learn the answers. But why did she shake him up so much?

Before he knew it, Lars was jumping the tracks of tradition. He quit his church, took long walks, got to know his sons again, became romantic with his wife, and fell in love with God as his personal friend. If you want to jump the tracks of tradition in your life, wow, Lars has some advice for you. Great book.

Sight-Read Any Rhythm Instantly

Great New Approach
In a nutshell, this book is great for anyone seeking an alternative to the dreary "counting" method traditionally offered to teach the sight-reading of rhythms. You'll learn the sounds of different rhythms and be able to "feel" them rather than count them. This unique approach is much more intuitive and a heck of a lot more musical. Highly recommended!

The end to all your rhythm reading blues!
"Sight-Read Any Rhythm Instantly" will help you do exactly that! This is one of the first books I've read on music rhythm that completely turns the tradition of thinking in terms of music notes (their duration) on its ear. The author, Mark Phillips, explains in 55 short pages the correct way to think about reading music rhythm - think in terms of beats!

The beauty of Mark's system is that as a musician (any instrument) the only thing you need to think about (consciously) is whether or not you hit a note as you read it. Half-consciously, in the back of your mind, you'll be counting "one-two-three" (3-beat measure) as might always have done but you WILL NOT be trying to keep track of how long individual notes last. The author makes a compelling case for how difficult it is to correctly play a series of notes whose time values involve complex fractions (a third of a beat, a quarter of a beat, etc.).

Instead, the author shows you how to memorize the sound of each of the various combinations of notes that commonly occur within "one beat" (e.g., eighth notes, sixteenth notes, triplets, etc.) Essentially, the author provides you with a set of note combination patterns that you commit to memory. Once in memory, the rhythm sound of each one-beat combination can be played automatically. The author provides copious examples of most all of the patterns you would typically encounter in today's music (guitar tablature, piano, violin, etc.) and learning them is really not difficult at all - far easier than trying to count "one-ee-and-uh" every time you encounter a series of sixteenth notes.

I guess the best thing I can say about this ... gem is that you'll get one of the best bangs for the buck on learning to play in time - correctly - than any other contemporary book on rhythm reading available today. Believe me, I own just about all of 'em!

Great resource.
This is an excellent resource for the beginner or trained musician who is not as rhythmically adept as s/he would like to be. It teaches how to comprehend and be able to play rhythms at a glance. Highly recommended.

Who Knew Sight-Singing Could Be Fun?
Mark Phillips uses good-humored commentary to provide a very natural and easy way to sight-sing. Using his approach, the process becomes second-nature, allowing you to sight-sing any melody regardless of whether you have perfect pitch or not. This method is more effective than anything I ever learned in high school or college music classes and is a lot more fun! And the best part about this book is that there isn't a lot of boring stuff to get through before you actually start singing. It's great!

Effortless sight-singing!
The amazing thing about this book is that it actually works. Other sight-singing books teach intervals, which don't work. This book shows you a trick to hear individual scale degrees. Once you learn the trick, and once the key is established, sight-singing is as effortless as if you had perfect pitch.

An Excellent Method
This book puts a different--and much more effective--twist on the task of sight-singing than, say, the average high school or college ear-training class. This method gets you up and running very quickly. Highly recommended!

Six Characters in Search of an Author and Other Plays (Twentieth Century Classics)

A nearly flawless work of the theater well ahead of its time
As with Laurence Sterne's TRISTRAM SHANDY, Pirandello's 1921 masterpiece, SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR, was well ahead of its time. It confronts issues in the fields of metaphysics, epistemology, postmodernism (structuralism and deconstruction) as well as prefacing experimental theater, metatheater, and performance art. Pirandello's work is a nearly flawless play which breeches the topics of self-identity (a la Descartes), truth and illusion (before Albee), and aesthetics (questioning the legitimizing factor in Aristotle's theory of catharsis). Furthermore, it forces the audience--as too many works of art fail to do--to think without lapsing into philosophic didacticism. Highly recommended.

Masterpiece
Pirandello had writer's block. Luisa felt sorry for him. "Just write whatever's in your head", she said, "That's what you're always telling me. Everyone who's ever written a play-- I suppose that leaves out the critics and the university professors--knows that YOU don't write the play, you let the CHARACTERS write the play. Here", she said, "have a glass of wine. It'll help relax you." Two days later, when he was done, Luigi took the manuscript over to Alphonse, the literature teacher. Alphonse declared, after scanning it, "You've written a masterpiece!" "Really?" said Pirandello, "I mean, of course!" Alphonse stood up and gestured grandly with his arms, saying "Ah, the metaphysical ramifications! Reality and the imagination! You've started Postmodernism!" So Luigi did a little dance and headed home to bed.

One review in search of a reviewer
He must be around here somewhere. Let me see, hello? Mr. Reviewer? Ms. Reviewer? How I am I supposed to start this? I guess I am a review for the Luigi Pirandello play, "Six Characters in Search of an Author." What am I supposed to say about it? I guess I could say that it is a wonderful piece about the search for truth. A reflection of the human experience. Dazzled and question ridden, on a journey to nowhere. But I haven't even read the thing! Mr. Reviewer? Ms. Reviewer? Tell me what it's about so I could have some idea to tell the readers out there. What? I can't hear you. Pirndello's best play? A post modern triumph? An easily stageable highway? Substitute for butter? What? I give up, you wicked person. Find someone else to be your slave, I am going to sleep now

esthetician's opinion
As a licensed esthetician, I find this book my best resource. It covers most of the questions I have had as a skin care professional and many of my client's questions as well. I consider this book essential to anyone in my profession. It is readable and understandable for anyone, those in the business or those just wanting to understand their skin and what products can help them.

Thank you Dr. Lee.

Skin Care Beyond the Basics
Lee's book is a must for all estheticians (skin care specialists) and medical personnel looking for a simple-to-understand text directed to teach and provide review about basic skin chemistry, ingredient chemistry, skin disorders, their causes, challenges, and how to treat. His chapters on "The Immune System" and "Essential Knowledge of Chemistry," give a a great dialoque on understanding our immune system and basic chemistry. Mr. Lee is a great teacher. He puts difficult theories into "people language." Skin care correction for highly damaged skin is very well explained. Having been in professional skin care for 17 years, I find this book a marvelous reference. Its provides some of the latest findings and theories for accurate analysis. For the lay person, new student,or beauty editor, it offers great insight into the complexity of our skin, the body's largest organ, and how it plays a vital role to protect us. It also explains about skin diseases and how they are recognized and treated. The best thing is that this is an accurate book based on science and written by a well qualified and experienced person. After all, skin care is a science and plays a large role in preventative health care.

Sleeping With Ghosts: A Life's Work in Photography

Moving
I read about this book in American Photo magazine, and having heard nothing else, decided to order it. I can say that this is my absolute favorite! If you are at all curious about it, don't hesitate - you may miss the chance to own this incredible book.

From the first image to the last, McCullin shows a perspective rarely seen in any sort of photo journalism. It's like he tries to separate from the action to be professional, but finds himself wound up in it time and time again. He intersperses images of hope, but all with the same pessimistic tone. Even from a sheerly technical standpoint, his images carry breathtaking weight.

It has been said time and time again, and even by McCullin himself, that his images are often printed very darkly. I think this style of contrasty grain enhances the experience and appreciation for his pictures. If you're looking for maximum slickness, look for the carefully planned and meticulously arranged portraits of Herb Ritts. If you're looking for photos that force the truth and emmotion of reality, this book is unmatched.

A rare talent!
Many years ago I processed Don's films for him. Bags of films straight from the wars of Viet Nam etc. I was only young but I was in complete awe of Don. Don was one of many well known photographers I met during my time in a professional lab but he was rather special. The sights he had witnessed were written on his somewhat sad face. A terrific guy who even had the time to talk to me, the darkroom junior. That was 30 years ago but I still marvel at the images he has created. Good luck Don, I wish you every happiness.

Great Photojournalist
I admired the photos in this book very much. Don McCullin is a powerful photographer. Many of these photos are mesmerizing and I would highly recommend this book.

I first heard about McCullin through a segment of the television documentary by Kathy and Amy Eldon on CNN called Dying To Tell the Story.

I bought SLEEPING WITH GHOSTS soon after watching that program because I was struck by McCullin's photos on television. It has been more than one year since I purchased this book through Amazon and I continue to learn things ( about photography, art, humanity, journalism ) as I look at it again and again. Each time I pick it up ( atleast once a month ) and look through the pages I learn something new, because McCullin is photojournalist in the finest sense of the word.

In this age of tabloid journalism and paparazzi - it is wonderful to see a shining example of what photo essays can and should be.

SLEEPING WITH GHOSTS is a reminder that documentary photography is IMPORTANT - it can have integrity - and it is a service to the world.

I'm greatly looking forward to looking through Don McCullin's new book, INDIA.

This book is an excellent dissection of Al Davis and the stunts he pulls throughout his life and with the NFL. His battles with Pete Rozelle and the league are not much smaller than battles in a World War. From coaching at the Citadel to moving his Raiders from Oakland to Los Angeles. It goes through Al's boyhood life and his struggles to the top of the game with the Raiders. This is an excellent book, not only for Raiders fans but any fan of sports.

Great book on THE Man.
If your looking to learn more on this football legend, then get a copy of this. Great research on a man obessed with being the best in pro football. Gives you the ups and down in his life.

Simply the BEST book on Al Davis!
Well-researched, well-written, and fun to read, this book reveals the "Genius" in all his wretched squalor and details the steps he took to get where he is. Great sport!

Soldiers of Misfortune: The truth uncovered.
Mark Sauter and Jim Sanders found out what every author attempts to do in writing an expose': to get at the truth. It's a sorry fact that the Eisenhower administration knew it and chose to cover up their abandonment of our POWs from WWII and Korea. What is even more atrocious, is that to this day they, the USG, refuses to make any attempt to return our living POW's from Russia, China, North Korea and Vietnam. They have it figured out that if they horse around long enough, the men there will die and be forgotten. Well folks, that just ain't so! Sauter and Sanders have shined the light on this trashing of our Constitution and the memory of our brave men. They may die off in captivity, but their families have not forgotten them. The question of the Century is: Have the American People forgotten our long lost Soldiers of Misfortune?

Excellent!!
This is a hard-to-find documentation of bureaucratic "cynical attitudes" that allowed thousands of American POWs to be left in the Soviet Gulag after WWII. Families were not told the truth about the fate of their husbands, fathers and brothers, some of whom were seen the the Soviet Union camps as late as the fifties and sixties. It also reports how later wars, including Viet Nam, found American POWS spending their lives in Soviet imprisonment, as the US government denied it. Interestingly, James Sanders, one of the authors, wrote "The Downing of TWA Flight 800" a book which has caused him to face imprisonment in this country because he disagrees with the "cynical attitude" or rather the official position, that no missiles struck Flight 800 on July 17,1996, almost three years ago at the date of this writing.

A warning all young men should read before enlistment.
After reading this book and completing several years of research of my own to satisfy myself that what I was reading was factual, I find that I would not have served through three brush fire wars had I seen this information first. The lack of value washington places on a soldiers life is absolutely astounding.
