going with the flow of life, carrying unfullfilled dreams and seeking fullfillment in life. The great news is like Lars it is waiting for us to grasp and then to share. Cecil Kemp shows how to search and find a life full of meaning and significance.
A wonderful book.
A thoroughly enjoyable book, one that is very difficult to stop reading. The story is one of fiction, but the lesson is one of powerful truth. It focuses on those of us who have simply accepted the status quo...that we are to accept what we have always done as the best way. It will inspire you to seek a better way, a better life.
This is my second Cecil Kemp book and there will definitely be more to follow. Read this book, get out of your comfort zone and find the joy in life that is available to those who seek it!
Before he knew it, Lars was jumping the tracks of tradition. He quit his church, took long walks, got to know his sons again, became romantic with his wife, and fell in love with God as his personal friend. If you want to jump the tracks of tradition in your life, wow, Lars has some advice for you. Great book.

The beauty of Mark's system is that as a musician (any instrument) the only thing you need to think about (consciously) is whether or not you hit a note as you read it. Half-consciously, in the back of your mind, you'll be counting "one-two-three" (3-beat measure) as might always have done but you WILL NOT be trying to keep track of how long individual notes last. The author makes a compelling case for how difficult it is to correctly play a series of notes whose time values involve complex fractions (a third of a beat, a quarter of a beat, etc.).
Instead, the author shows you how to memorize the sound of each of the various combinations of notes that commonly occur within "one beat" (e.g., eighth notes, sixteenth notes, triplets, etc.) Essentially, the author provides you with a set of note combination patterns that you commit to memory. Once in memory, the rhythm sound of each one-beat combination can be played automatically. The author provides copious examples of most all of the patterns you would typically encounter in today's music (guitar tablature, piano, violin, etc.) and learning them is really not difficult at all - far easier than trying to count "one-ee-and-uh" every time you encounter a series of sixteenth notes.
I guess the best thing I can say about this ... gem is that you'll get one of the best bangs for the buck on learning to play in time - correctly - than any other contemporary book on rhythm reading available today. Believe me, I own just about all of 'em!

From the first image to the last, McCullin shows a perspective rarely seen in any sort of photo journalism. It's like he tries to separate from the action to be professional, but finds himself wound up in it time and time again. He intersperses images of hope, but all with the same pessimistic tone. Even from a sheerly technical standpoint, his images carry breathtaking weight.
It has been said time and time again, and even by McCullin himself, that his images are often printed very darkly. I think this style of contrasty grain enhances the experience and appreciation for his pictures. If you're looking for maximum slickness, look for the carefully planned and meticulously arranged portraits of Herb Ritts. If you're looking for photos that force the truth and emmotion of reality, this book is unmatched.
I first heard about McCullin through a segment of the television documentary by Kathy and Amy Eldon on CNN called Dying To Tell the Story.
I bought SLEEPING WITH GHOSTS soon after watching that program because I was struck by McCullin's photos on television. It has been more than one year since I purchased this book through Amazon and I continue to learn things ( about photography, art, humanity, journalism ) as I look at it again and again. Each time I pick it up ( atleast once a month ) and look through the pages I learn something new, because McCullin is photojournalist in the finest sense of the word.
In this age of tabloid journalism and paparazzi - it is wonderful to see a shining example of what photo essays can and should be.
SLEEPING WITH GHOSTS is a reminder that documentary photography is IMPORTANT - it can have integrity - and it is a service to the world.
I'm greatly looking forward to looking through Don McCullin's new book, INDIA.
