30 minutes that could change your entire life!
Author David Cottrell, founder of CornerStone Institute, has done a tremendous favor for the 21st century business community by publishing this handy and quick read. In less time than it takes to watch a sitcom on TV, "175 Ways" inspires you to cut through the time-consuming portions of your day to have the time you need to do what you do well.

This little book is a "must" for every new graduate, every veteran business person and everyone in between. Not only can you learn to save time, but you can also learn how to get the most out of every minute, whether at home, commuting or at the office.

By virtue of its application to every lifestyle, this book may well replace the "One-Minute Manager" as required reading for every employee of every company in America.

And, for the price, each time management tip is worth its weight in gold!

The 1970s (America's Decades Ser)
Published in Paperback by Greenhaven Press (April, 2000)
Author: Mark Ray Schmidt
Amazon base price: $27.45
Used price: $19.77

A manageable approach for introducing the 1970s.
Books in the "American Decade Series" are designed to give its readers a glimpse of American history decade by decade. "The 1970s" is no exception. Historians often balk at the amateurish approach of presenting history decades by decade. While this approach may be somewhat simplistic, it can serve as an excellent teaching method for introducing new material to students.

"The 1970s" starts with a well rounded introduction, it then presents its thirty essays, or chapters from other books, on various issues prevalent in the 1970s. These topics are further broken down into international issues in the 1970s, national issues in the 1970s, environment, energy, and automobiles in the 1970s, popular culture in the 1970s, women's issues in the 1970s and from the 1970s into the future. The makeup and selection serves as a well-balanced approach to understanding the decade. No particular area is over represented. Each essay includes a brief bio of the writer. Additionally, the book is well served with an excellent chronology of events, recommendations for further study and an index. At 320 pages, "The 1970s" is a good choice for honor students in high school or possible a good textbook for a college level course on 20th century America.

Outdated editions are valuable tools
I own every edition of Writer's Market (WM) from 1997 on (which was the year I first discovered these jewels), and I'm dying to get my hands on the new Writer's Market 2001 "Internet Edition" (Sep 2000).

The power these guides offer depends on how thorough of a market search you are forced into conducting when you first start out as a freelance writer. If you run into a market that does not provide enough guideline information -- in a current edition -- if you have older WM edition(s), you can look back to see what the deal is. This can be especially important if you run into a magazine that you believe might be one of the few you are going to be able to break in to.

For example, I discovered a number of incredibly good ideas for children's stories that would fit perfectly within the pages of "Ranger Rick" magazine (National Wildlife Federation).

The WM 2000 CD-ROM listed an editor, but very limited contact info and guidelines (as in NO guidelines):

(Ranger Rick is) "40% freelance written. Monthly magazine for children from ages 7-12, with the greatest concentration in the 7-10 age bracket. *Because of a backup in submissions, the editorial staff at Ranger Rick is not accepting queries or unsolicited manuscripts until further notice."

Ouch! What to do? I looked in in older WMs to see how long Ranger Rick had been having a "backup in submissions." WM 99 listed full writers guidelines and pay-info and well, I'm waiting to see whether Ranger Rick editors like my ideas or if they're going to toss them because of a "backup in submissions." :-)

Superior, absolutely essential tool for writers!
Writer's Market is to a writer as a hammer is to a carpenter--an absolutely essential tool.

AND, the '99 edition has added, valuble, useful goodies. Just checked one catagory of magazines, found 6 new ones, 2 dropped from the previous edition. Point: truly up-to-date.

I'd been using the paper version for decades, then told by a writer-friend of the advantages of the CD ROM version. Have it now, and it IS indeed superior!

A Timely Movtivator
There could not have been a more appropriate time for such a book as yours. The reason being in the advent of the last year's strikes on the World Trade Centres, not only was America shaken but the world was. Spirits were very low, jobs were lost, lives taken and the world economy crashed like never before. Coming from a third world country like India, I personally felt the loss even though I was not directly hit - not to forget mentioneding that I was without a job myself and on the look out for one. Yet, everywhere I truned the reality of cost cutting, and even where there was hope of getting a job it was lost in the "all on hold" excuse even in India due to September 11th. So, as human being we all are prone to high and low moments in life and get easily affected by what goes on around us, thus with everyone crying out their troubles to each other and so were companies who could not promote, give incentives or even recruit or give the expected bonuses to their employees as is a regular practice every year "it all came to a sudden halt". This is where your book throws a "ray of hope" and brings about another meaning to life in one sense "an awakening". I personally like the examples used and the day to day life experiences used. Keep writing such books as we have less motivators today and more spectators. Any and everyone can point to the faults and mistakes of others but no one is willing to go beyond that and say lets forgive and get on for God sake.
These are my few thoughts and honest opinions to your book. I would love to get a copy free since it is not yet available in my part of India as yet. My address is C/o Daniel Sams, 90, Elliot Road, Calcutta-700 016 - INDIA
