Great Investment!
This book is an easy read. Very informative about past crimes throughout history. Once you pick it up, you will not want to put it down. The only down side is they should have came out with a series of books!

Bloomfield (Images of America) - TERRIFIC ANTHOLOGY
A very well researched, very well compiled history presented with a sense of appreciation and affection. This book contains a truly spectacular collection of historical pictures. It's obvious a lot of effort was put into this book. The authors covered everything including Brookside School and the ONT factory! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

The Boar (Subterranean Press Short Novel , No 2)
Published in Hardcover by Subterranean (December, 1998)

Great early Lansdale!
This was a fabulous book! Lansdale is a great writer for many reasons one of which is his ability to write in so many different genres. Lansdale wrote The Boar very early in his career. In the introduction Lansdale discusses the genesis of the story and the journey to get it published. This alone was very interesting.

The story itself is a well-written period piece. It takes place in Texas during the depression. It is the story of a 15 year old boy and an almost mythical wild boar that threatens his family.

An insightful and beautiful survey of life itself.
Although my initial interest in this book stemmed from a pursuit of amatuer paleontology, I soon discovered that Dr. Alexander had written a very general and succinct discussion of how and why bones are as they are. His presentation ranges from most interesting mechanical considerations to those of esthetics. The very well written text is supported by beautiful photography -- who would have thought that 'bones' could be so interesting?

My only regret is that I am reviewing a borrowed copy. Unfortunately, the book is out of print, and I cannot find even a used copy. I intend to contact the publisher and encourage a second printing.

Meanwhile, check you library resources. This book is well worth reading and contemplating.

Intriguing, thought-provoking, unique
This book made me a Edmond Jabes fan - I doubt that any other of his books would have for this is by far the most accessible. Jabes is an Egyptian Jew in exile in France writing primarily after the Holocaust. His writing style is a series of snippets - fiction, poetry, aphorisms - that explore the limits of language and the role of the blank, the silence, the desert, the unwritten. In The Books of Shares each of these snippets stands on its own - that is not true, for example, of the multi-volume Book of Questions. The result is a truly post-modern reflection on theology and philosophy - and post-modern without pretention.

When I read this book on a silent retreat, I found passage after passage that I wanted to hear, to memorize, to enter into my journal.

An example: "Out of the words of his language, a writer forges new words, not neologisms, but words irrigated with his blood. He founds a second language which, to be sure, is rooted in the first with all its fibers, but which henceforth, being his own - O paradox - is nobody's. Because the writer's language wants to be only of the book, of the instant and duration of a liberated word."

If you enjoy the Books of Shares, there are many wonderful volumes of Jabes to follow. If you do not enjoy this, you may safely assume that Jabes is not your reading choice.

Easy to follow
This book has some great trails and the descriptions make them easy to follow. I also bought the other JH guide book and found some of the "trails" to be lame and the descriptions were bad - I got lost. I highly reccomend THE BOOK! It's fun to read too.

Hilarious laugh out loud outlandish cartoon of a fish story.
A good bait fishing tail. How big was it? It was...yeah right. You can believe it or not, but lies and hyperbole make for some fun reading. This book is like a cartoon in novel form. Plus, it's got a solid eco message. But, you can ignore that if you want and simply enjoy the cast of freaks and misfits and weirdos and fish tales.
