Collective Action in the European Union: Interests and the New Politics of Associability
Published in Paperback by Routledge (March, 1998)
Authors: Justin Greenwood, Mark Apinwall, and Mark Aspinwall
Amazon base price: $36.95
Average review score:

good overview and case studies
Greenwood and Aspinwall join the growing number of authors dealing with interest groups on the European level. In their introduction they provide a useful overview of the EU's lobbying system. They argue that the system of interest representation is similar to the way interests interact with Washington. Although business interests dominate in Brussels (63% of all interest groups) non-profit groups do have a chance of exercising influence.

As Cram points out in her contribution, the EU institutions themselves have encouraged lobbying and are active actors in the policy process and not just passive providers of a framework. They bring particular interest groups together and create policy networks. An interesting deviation from the usual emphasis on business groups is Young's discussion of consumer interest organisations. Similarly, Webster's analysis of the strategies of environmental groups offers interesting insights.

All in all, the book presents an informative and balanced view of the challenges that private interest - both business groups and non-profit associations- face when acting at the EU level.

Colorado Desert Wildflowers: A Guide to Flowering Plants of the Low Desert, Including the Coachella Valley, Anza-Borrego Desert, and Portions of

Excellent Introduction for new wildflower enthusiasts
This small book provides attractive color pictures of every wildflower that it covers. The first time or sometime enthusiast will enjoy this book much more than the more broadly focused Jaeger and Munz classics that have fewer color plates and devote most of their coverage to the Mohave Desert. 1998 has been an extraordinary spring wildflower year. I have attempted to use all three books and found that my success with this one was such that I was able to find and identify about 3/4 of the flowers in the book just from my trips to Borrego Springs, Mecca Road (Box Canyon), Joshua Tree and the Colorado River.

Changes in Youth Ministry?
Mark Senter does a very good job researching what has taken place in Youth Ministry for the last few centuries. He believes that their are fifty year cycles in Youth Ministry and we are currently at the end of the third documented cycle. Senter feels that the way we do Youth Ministry will change in the near future and gives some ideas to what we might expect. This is a very good book for anyone involved in Youth Ministry.

The Competitive City: The Political Economy of Suburbia (Pitt Series in Policy and Institutional Studies)
Published in Paperback by Univ of Pittsburgh Pr (Txt) (December, 1991)
Author: Mark Schneider
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

A helpful contribution to the "City Limits" debate
Schneider conducts statistical analysis that puts Paul Peterson's "city limits" theory -- which casts its shadows over the entire field of urban politics -- to empirical tests. I found his research thorough and compelling. Less persuasive are the conclusions he draws regarding the power of inter-jurisdictional market forces to restrain the ability to self-aggrandizing bureaucrats to pad their budgets. All in all, a good book for anyone interested in urban politics or state and local public finance.

The Complete Book of Alternate Tunings (The Complete Guitar Player Series)
Published in Paperback by Music Sales Corp (June, 1996)
Author: Mark Hanson
Amazon base price: $18.95
Average review score:

Kick-butt referance
If you've run out of riffs or are looking for a sound that sets you apart, this is THE book. I probably wouldn't reccomend it for less than intermediate (2-3 years on gutiar) But if you're even curious about alternative tunings this book is the best resource you can find for the money, covering the most common dadgad to the obscure i.e. B'Gdf#ad'. It loses points for D.I.Y.ers in assuming a working knowladge of chord and scale theroy. You can over look that as a small trade off for the sheer volume of information and well laid out information and examples. (Pages 85-120 are nothing but lists of artists and tunings, covering Chet Atkins, Sonic Youth and Led Zepplin just for starters.) If you want Hawaiian,Celtic or Heavy Metal you can find something to make your self heard here and if you're fingerstyle folk, just lock the door behind you and take enough food for a couple of days.

Complete Book of Medical Tests
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (June, 1984)
Authors: Mark A. Moskowitz and Michael E. Osband
Amazon base price: $17.50
Average review score:

Required reading for the informed patient
This book has been a well used source of concise and patient friendly information by myself and other family members. The authors, Moskowitz and Osband, have produced a true 'Gem' with regards to patient information; my only regret is the book is now being listed as out-of-print. If there were an updated copy (1984) available I would recommend it to every family member, friend and anyone who wants to know the difference between a CAT, MRI or CBC - what they are used for and what to expect when your doctor orders one. The format: Purpose of test, background, how the test is done, how results are given, patient preparation, risks and discomforts, symptoms for which this test is commonly obtained, diseases for which this test is commonly obtained and costs is a format that gives the patient (or anyone) the needed information to ask intelligent questions and manage their medical needs.

Computer Gamerªs Bible

A Good & Practical Direction
This 18-chapter book shows us the latest development in computer games. I found lots of useful information in the 640-page book, and its CD also gave me wonderful experience in several new games. The book is real good for persons who need basic & detailed directions on various present-day games. For each major game-category, the author supplies one or two examples with simple directions on the playing strategy, along with playing requirements for platforms, modes and systems. You can also find many directions for home-gaming hardware choice and installation. Among the book's three parts (Part I Hardware Basics, Part II Other Game Worlds, Part III Advanced Gaming Topics), the third one is most useful for me---a game-lover who do not have enough time to go through various game stuffs but really want to know something about at least most of them. By the way, this is a bible for game players, not for game programmers.
