Recommended for libraries and mental health professionals.
I encountered this book when I was taking a course in "History and Systems" of psychology. Although the subtitle of the book is "The History and Evolution of Dynamic Psychiatry," it had value for me because of its coverage of Janet, Freud, Adler, and Jung. It was a monumental task for the author to produce this work of 932 pages. It is remarkably well researched, and for me as a psych grad student the bibliographical information often pointed me in the direction of references that I would not have known about without additonal library work.

The study of psychology is cumulative. The knowledge of the past builds the base of the work and research of the present time. Thus, we begin with a base in the mists of time with the shamans and witchdoctors, proceed through philosophers and medical practitioners of the past, into the work done by modern practitoners and academics. So also is the world of the psychology student one of building upon prior knowledge not just from prior courses taken in a program of study, but also what is learned from the great minds of psychology and psychiatry help form the student's own attitudes.

Although this book will probably not appeal to the average reader of "Psychology Today" magazine, its value is that it presents a lot of psychological theory in an easily understandable form without unnecessary professional jargon. It made some difficult concepts understandable to me, and for that reason it has value to libraries, advanced psychology students, and mental health professionals.

Good Overview and Useful Reference Guide
BIBLE PROPHECY MADE EASY lives up to its title. It provides the reader with a good overview of the subject and a handy reference guide. Much of the success of the book is due to its helpful organization featuring interesting topics such as the "Antichrist" and the "Last Days." The author makes no effort to sensationalize his material. Instead he concentrates on the task of explaining a complex matter by breaking it down into its more easily understood parts.

A Bilingual Edition of the Love Songs of Bernart De Ventadorn in Occitan and English: Sugar and Salt (Studies in Mediaeval Literature, 17)

a must for every-one interested in twelfth century trobadors
Here is a book, where all the songs of Bernart de Ventadorn are together including music, original texts, literary translations and free translations. The music is transcripted, and unfortunately not in orginal notation, but the quality of the transciptions is good. The litarary translations are a great help in understandig the poems. The free translations are poems based on the original. They don't realy match with the original and they are not of the same quality. Despite the last point, it is a very good book, a must-have for every-one interested in twelfth century trobador-music.

Biochemistry for the Boards
I ordered this book to help me prepare for the Biochemistry portion of the USMLE Step 1. The majority of questions in this book are based on clinical vignettes (just like the real boards). I enjoyed this format because it strips down the intricacies of various biochemical pathways and stresses only those that are CLINICALLY RELEVANT. I also enjoyed the fact that the book has patient presentation pictures (i.e. Cushing's, Graves, etc.) and detailed explanations about the answers to the questions. While I don't think that you could study Biochem from this book alone, I do think that it is an EXCELLENT way to test yourself (or torture others:)) after you have finished reviewing. Overall, a very good book.

An excellent introductory approach to Biogeography
This book written by some of the best authors known in the field comprises a quite extensive overall view of biogeography, its fundaments, beginnings, divisions, schools and relatively new applications and inner relations with other sciences. It contains also a copy of the original zoogeographic regions map created by Wallace. This book resembles the whole biogeography curse taught in the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, UNAM. which is quite exceptional and has the best scientists-profesors in Latin America. If you are looking for a "has it all" biogeography book this one is a must have for undergraduates and graduates students interested in comparative biology, systematics and distributions of taxa within time and space. The review has only four stars for strictly brand new additions of up to date biogeographical information are not included in this edition, yet, but for a three year old book it is a minor problem.

Plato vs. Aristotle--Who is RIght?
Do the senses inhibit are judgement or do the senses increase are judgment for a more objective reality? This basic arguement has been debated ever since the time of Ancient Greece. As more research shows, the philosophy of Plato is becoming more real. As children, humans begin to categorize their world, picking out certain characteristics and weeding out other characteristics that are body related. These experiences are image schemas which are non-cultural that everyone experiences but are either used or non-used depending on the social environment that enforces them. Therefore, the objective reality cannot exist since there are characteristics that are eliminated and others that are given importance. Johnson does a superb job in explaining the image schema, that is a most difficult concept to grasp. The mind is is part of the body, not separated from it as shown in this book.

Not up to Joel Whitburn but an interesting variation
A variation on pop-chart history books, McAleer summarizes a month's worth of charts into a single top twenty. Each page contains 3 months of singles charts, with the even numbered pages showing UK charts directly opposite the same month's summary in the US. The margins are filled with the music trivia of the day. The odd format of monthly charts exaggerates the chart success of songs that were around at the start of the month, but hurts songs that peaked in mid-month. Also odd, each country's chart also include a cross-reference to the WEEKLY position in the other country. But as a nostalgia tool, it's great fun to see what songs were popular in a given month, such as a birthday, wedding or graduation. Also includes an All-time US 100 (with The Twist at #1) and UK Top 100 (where Rock Around the Clock reigns), and cross reference by song title & artist.
