Don't waste your money
I regret buying this. Its partly my fault for not reading more reviews. Its also partly the problem with buying on line. In a book store had I looked at this book I would have seen that is merely a lesson plan for teachers with out an idea. The book offers almost no information. Instead the premise is that the 'student' should go out and do the exercises. In other words, learn it by yourself.
Perhaps if you are a teacher without an idea you could use this for lesson plans. The authors are an example of university teachers who publish garbage to appear to advance their status on campus. Otherwise this book is useless.

Good for very general and basic information.
This is not a good book if you want in-depth information on the subject of lighting. However, it does give a nice overview of the major areas of photographic lighting. Unfortunately, it leaves the reader wanting more information and further explanations. I felt this book was a good read for a novice photographer, but not someone who knows the basics, but wants a more in-depth view of the broader categories of lighting.

what type of photographer are you?
I think the question is whether you are an advanced amateur or pro photographer already-someone who is looking for advanced diagrams, etc. on studio setups, etc. That is NOT the type of book this is. For someone-such as myself-who is self-taught and trying to learn or solidfy an understanding of lighting, this book is an excellent tool. It does include exercises, but by no means do they take up the bulk of the text. Most of the text is lean, clear writing that helps you understand the characteristics and behavior of light, some different choices you have for lighting, etc. As such, the book very much fills a niche for a certain audience because unlike other books, this one attempts to teach the foundations of photographic lighting. And it does that job well.

This book is outdated.
This book must have been written a long time ago, becuase it only has Pokemon #1-151 (Mew is spelled Myu) and only has information on the Red/Blue/Yellow versions. There are three versions that don't have guides, and they are the gold/silver/crystal.

Interesting But Be Warned!
Be warned that this guide isn't accurate as it should be. For example, on one page it states that you have to win the Rainbow Badge to get the Bulbasaur from the Pokemon Collector in Pokemon Yellow. You only need the Cascade Badge which you get in Cerulean City.

Another problem is the sequential order they use for the walk through which makes following it difficult and confusing. It would be better to have a step by step walk through rather than one that was so confusing as to mislead the readers.

Besides these problems plus the map of one of the areas in the game being somewhat hard to read, the book is a fair read but my suggestion is that the buyer should be ware.

Tom's Review
I bought this book for my daughter for Christmas. We used it constantly when she played Pokemon Snap. Now we use it when she plays with Gameboy Blue/Red/Yellow. I like the extensive use of pictures. I also like the alphabetical listing of the Pokemon instead of the 1-151 number system. Highly recommended!

This guy is a complete ningkumpoop!
This book is completely filled with nonsense. Did this guy ever take any classes or instruction on what is he writing about? What qualifications does he have? Spend you money on a real networking book from a qualified author.

Organization and Topics Good.
Edited 11/22/02.

I bought this over a year ago and was not impressed, initially. However, I am re-reading it in light of new responsibilities, and I'm changing my opinion, slightly.

First of all, if you are a serious system administrator, you should own, read, and work to the principles outlined in this book.

With that said, there were two items that I felt detracted from the presentation.

First was, there was much text devoted to particular operating systems (both *nix and Windows). Whether you're dealing with Linux, Unix, or BeOS, it's the principles that matter, not the implementation.

The second was that cfEngine, a systems configuration engine, was used to demonstrate the principles. This works on Unix - and again, detracted from the overall presentation of the "Principles" in the title I bought it for.

So, bottom line, the book is worth a read. Spend some time working to understand and apply the principles in your environment. If you can implement some of the specifics of the author's techniques, that's all the better.

11/10/02 update: "The Practice of System and Network Administration" is in. Short verdict, it's worth the money.

A pretty good work on the non-technical side of sysadmining
This work is a good one on the non-technical side of system adminsitration. It does not deal with stuff like HOW to install a system, but the WHYs, such as WHY you want to properly document your installations.

This sort of work has been needed for a long time, since "The Keys to Successful Unix System Management" went out of print. However, this work may be a bit too academic for many admins. They might find the recent "Practice of System and Network Administration" to be a bit better. If you can afford both, do so.

Too much of a lightweight read
Admittedly, there aren't many books devoted to the LA river so we have to make do with what's available. Unfortunately, if you're looking for an in-depth historical biography, this certainly isn't it. Entertaining, maybe -- a big maybe. The text is so lightweight and airy, I half expected it to drift away. The Blake Gumprecht book is more thoroughly researched and thought out, and a much better choice.

Not very interesting.
I'm a big fan of "urban archaeology" but except for a few cool bridges (if you've ever been to the movies you've seen them) there's not much goin' on these days along the LA river. Its interesting as a story but photographicly its pretty dull, even as an industrial landscape.

Its like books on Rt. 66. 99% of what made it interesting isn't there anymore.

A great read!!
That other review must be from a disgruntled author. Patt Morrison's book is filled with historical information about the Los Angeles River, plus wonderful anecdotes and a very readable style--I bought it because I saw it on the LA Times BESTSELLER list for six weeks and decided to see what I was missing. The people who put it on the list by buying it know what's great--I love this book. A book doesn't have to be long like Gumprecht's to be fulfilling. Plus this book has compelling photographs that tell their own incredible story. Hooray for Patt Morrison and Mark Lamonica!

Cut-and-dried typical homer broadcaster
Merril Reese's book is called "It's Good." Unfortunately, in my opinion,it's not. I found this to be the typical, cut-and-dried biography of a home-town broadcater whose life is totally defined by one dimension. He's the voice of the home team. That's pretty much it. Unless you eat, sleep and live Eagles football -- and this a 3-13 team now that creates yawns instead of yeahs, I would pass. (The Eagles wish they had a quarterback who could pass.) I guess Merrill won't be writing a sequel anytime soon.

ITS BAD!!!!
This book was not what I expected. Im a huge eagles fan and had liked reese but this book changed my mind. The funniest chaptor is the one titled "my guy, my pick". Reese tells us all how great a certain failed player is and how his influence picked him for the eagles. Reese also talks about how the players respect him when in fact my brother was a memeber of the team in the late 80's to mid 90's and constantly said that reese was a running "joke" in the locker room, he was known as the mosqiuto for being an annoying pest. Buyer beware.

For all with a passion for the Eagles or sports broadcasting
Merrill Reese is an icon in Philadelphia. He has always come across as a passionate fan and a dedicated, prepared sports broadcaster. His masterful radio broadcasts of Eagle games help his listeners watch the game in their minds. With this book, Reese goes far beyong the games, allowing the reader to view his team and sports broadcasting through his eyes, and what a view! Everyone loves to get the skinny on things, and Reese doesn't disappoint. The book is a very quick read for not only Philadelphia Eagle fans, but for those looking to get into sports broadcasting as well. In my opinion, it should be required reading for all those former athletes turned broadcasters, yet have little knowledge of how to communicate. Maybe they would come to understand Reese's passion, professionalism, and command of the English language, and why Philadelphia Eagle fans turn down the volume on the television and turn up Merril Reese on the radio.

Very difficult to follow and understand
The publishers of computer books ought to realize that people buy the books to be able to learn a program without having to suffer through technical gobbledygook. This book is written very badly. It is poorly organized. The book's five authors, I get the impression, weren't speaking to one another when they wrote it. The same material is covered in some chapters.

I found it extremely difficult to get anything out of this book, because the material is expalined so badly. I do not recommend it.

*This* is "Unleashed"?
First of all, I'd like to say that I'm a competent user of Linux, Windows, and the computer in general. I bought this book expecting it to teach me how to take the *basic* knowledge of FrontPage that I had gleaned from playing with the buttons and learning what they do by trial-and-error and expand upon it, not just explain how to use wizards. Guess which one I got. The so-called "Guide to Running a Linux Server" consisted of an explanation of the fact that ports of the giant security holes that Microsoft calls Server Extentions exist for almost all platforms. I was shocked! The first few chapters in the "Core FrontPage Techniques" section involved inserting tables and pictures! What?! There was then a useful chapter on positioning with CSS2, but then the book jumped right back into using themes! Themes! The topics that followed were primarily discussions of using the wizards, which is simply absurd. Microsoft's wizards make everything simple enough for even the most benightedly unintelligent person to understand. Nearly every topic that followed involved either a wizard or a Server Extension, and I'd rather not use anything like that. I am selling this book now, purchasing one on Dreamweaver, and moving on to real Web development.

I've created dozens of web sites for clients using....
what I learned in this book. I don't know where the other reviewers of this book are coming from but as a professional designer there was no better book on the market for me. The entire team I work with has a copy of this book. I have two of the previous editions as well. They are all great.

In my opinion, this is the best book out there whether you are starting off with this program or have used the program before. This book, like the other Stanek texts, is filled with great information, page after page, so that no matter what you are looking for on FrontPage you can find answers. If you are already a high tech person or already have used the program with some success, this is definitely a good choice. If you are a beginner that learns fast, I think this is a good choice too. This book is a must have for any FrontPage user.

I really like the approach and the presentation. The teaching style is casual and if you follow the chapters you will get a FP site up and running quickly. My advice is to buy this book.

Inaccurate, not even close!
Before i took my ACT last june, i studied with this book, it was awfully inaccurate, with the practice tests, my average scores ranged from 17-21 and on the real test my scores came out 25-26! This October I am taking my ACT again and obtained a real ACT sample test - which i scored very high on ranging f rom 25-34. With this book, my scores are still around 17-21.... i wonder about that! The sample tests are extremely inaccurate, they do not portray the ACT accurately or even resemble the test. Plus, i've found many mistakes in every section. It's nonsense and not worth buying!

MY FAVORITE ACT PREP
I used 4 ACT Preps and this one was by far my favorite! It did lack in some capacities as compared to the other texts but it definitely filled a lot of holes that other test preps didn't even approach which is what I think ultimately led me to score a 35!

Great book
The book and CD were very great but the ACT is too hyped up. You can receive a great score without ever buying a book to help you study.

Horrible! Nothing like the real test!
I studied out of 7 different preparation books, and this one, by far is the worst one! The questions in this book are really difficult, tricky and unlike the CLEP exam! The questions in the actual CLEP exam arent tricky like the SAT or GRE, they are straightforward. For some reason, Peterson's has decided to put in SAT-like questions on their practice exam. This book should be thrown out of the market because its NOTHING like the real exams! I would recommend Princeton Review's Cracking the CLEP, and Review for Clep Examination by Comex Systems. The REA also writes really accurate practice exams. If you are taking English, I also recommend you purchase "The Writer's Reference" by Diana Hacker. That was probably the most helpful book in brushing up on your English.

CLEP
I found the practice exercises in this book to be very helpful, and I did really well when I took the CLEP afterwards.

Just like all other Petersons books... excellent quality....
Looking to maximize my ability on the CLEP tests to avoid taking numerous classes that I have no interest in. If you'd like to get practice on these tests, than this book may help.

Pure unadulterated fiction of a sad story
This story is just a fabrication of a sad family history.
I know this entire family (married into it actually) and Maurice was a sick, twisted person from birth but not "possessed". His father was a hard man with a hard life (15 children) but not the devil incarnate. Ed and Lorraine fed off of Maurice's greed and his looking for a way to justify his sickness to come up with this.
I would suggest reading this book, but in the context of what is true and what is contrived. It is a sad story of a family's dealings with a sick man without the benefit of good psychiatric help. Many examples exist of insubstantiated conjecture not fact. Dreamstate conversations with an evil presence cannot be corroberated - it was either thought up by Maurice or the Warrens (I tend to think Maurice - I don't think Ed and Lorraine purposely invent - just explain everything via demonic posession). This is my opinion but it is based on family history.
Maurice had not the mental capacity to come up with this on his own. He was a physically strong and intelligent man but needed to be led into this explanation of his behaviour. Makes me think the other "investigations" by Ed and Lorraine are similar in nature.

Reads Like A Good Novel
Okay, I agree that you have to bring a healthy dose of skepticism to this sort of book, but if you can suspend your disbelief it makes for an entertaining read. It's well-written, particularly the parts that are clearly fiction (how do you recreate the dialogue from a murder/suicide???). The book was made into a TV movie entitled "The Possession of Michael D." later rereleased as "Legacy of Evil." It's still shown every year around Halloween. It must have been a hoot for the reporters who wrote it.

A BONE CHILLING TRUE STORY OF DEMONIC POSSESION.
A HAIR RAISEING STORY ABOUT A MAN SUFFERING WITH A DEMONIC PRESENCE TAKING CONTROL OF HIS LIFE.. MAURICE AND NANCY LIVED IN THE OUT SKIRTS OF A QUIET COUNTRY TOWN A PLACE WHERE YOU WOULD NEVER THINK SUCH AN EVIL OCCURENCE COULD TAKE PLACE.. I CAN'T GIVE TO MUCH AWAY CAUSE THIS STORY IS JUST TO UNBELIEVEABLE TO TELL, YOUR GOING TO HAVE TO READ IT FOR YOURSELF.. I COULDN'T DO IT JUSTICE BY TELLING YOU..BUT I CAN TELL YOU THAT MAURICE ENDURED MORE THAN A HUMAN SHOULD EVER GO THROUGH.. WELL TO END MY REVIEW I CAN TELL YOU SOMETHING THATS NOT IN THE BOOK BUT AFTER THE BOOK WAS WRITTEN MAURICE'S POSSESION BLEW UP IN FULL FORCE AND DROVE HIM TO TAKE HIS OWN LIFE.. ITS VERY TRUE AND VERY SAD.. I DID NOT KNOW THEM BUT I STILL MOURNED.. I DO KNOW ED AND LORRAINE WARREN WHO TRIED TO HELP MAURICE AND NANCY AND THEY SHARED THE LOSS NANCY.. BY READING THE BOOK YOU COULD REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT TRUE POSSESION IS ALL ABOUT...

Good general guidance, but not enough troubleshooting help
A good enough general survey of the Macintosh operating system -- fairly complete, and easy to read and follow. However, for more advanced users there is not enough information on troubleshooting, which is what I think most users are looking for in a computer book.

good book for beginners
well the really good thing about the book is that it contains a complete reference of what is possible with the mac, but for previous users of Mac Os 7.x it is just too much of informtaion. Unfortunately there is no section "what`s new in the MAc OS 8".

Mac Os 8 for Beginners
This is the manual Apple should have supplied with Mac Os 8. I would certainly recommend it for beginners or new users. However this book offers no real help to users wishing to resolve problems or to experienced "Macusers" This appears to be an issue with almost all "System" books written for the Macintosh. For those people looking for a users manual on system 8, a good buy.
