Helpful Guide for a New Author
An excellent source of information and help for the unpublished and struggling new writer. It gives you help in every aspect of writing - creating an outline, writing a first draft, making revisions and (most importantly of all!) writing a proposal and sending it out to potential agents. Some elements of the book I already knew - it has a list of "ten commandments" to writing a book, I knew about half of them going in, but even so - they were very informative. The biggest strength of the book lies in the appendix where examples of proposals are and where Mr. Shaw gives you step by step instructions in preparing your own. I would strongly recommend this book to any new author trying to find an agent and ultimately a publisher - definitely a good investment.

Daunting No More
Book Report is a very useful guide that I turned to again and again while crafting my book proposal. I was impressed by the author's ability to not only cover the nuts and bolts of writing a proposal, but also to succinctly convey what makes a quality proposal. Particularly useful were the parenthetical tips the author inserted throughout samples in the appendix. With Mark Shaw's style and ability to anticipate writers' questions and omissions, I felt like I had a mentor by my side leading me through what had been a daunting process.

Real help for real writers
I've read most of the how-to books and magazines over the past 15 years, and this is the only one to inspire me to stop reading and start writing.
The book lays out 10 basic rules for success, and helps new writers understand they are about to embark on an endeavor that's as much about the publishing business as it is creativity.
Is it useful? Let me say this: It's right next to my keyboard as I'm developing my new novel proposal.

Nice, but limited and too basic.
Considering there are not many (if any) books discussing brushwork, this book is nice to have. (The last book I read about this subject was published in the 1970s without color prints.)

The author starts out with how to buy good brushes, paints, mediums, then moves on to different paint consistency from very thick (good for impasto) to very thinned (with medium, good for wash). Next, the author discusses a handful of ways to pick up paint and apply paint on canvas, as well as mixing them either on palette or right on canvas. Nice pictures are used to show the angle of the brush and some paintings done by the artist, in which the techniques in point are indicated briefly.

Throughout the book, several full paintings are demonstrated briefly at the end of the book to show how these brush techniques were used by the artists.

I have no comments regarding the pictures presented in the book, but to say that they are nice. Almost all of them were done over a period of time, meticulously rendered.

A few things that I feel a bit misled. For instance, the introduction mentions the use of a palette knife (implying 'knifework', or so I thought). In fact, the book only covers how to mix paints with a knife, which is shamefully basic! (Any painter who bothers to buy palette knives to use should be able to figure that out for herself!)

Anothing that disappoints me is that since all the paintings were done realistically in the Flemish style (14th & 15th century or so), the use of the brushes to create 'mystified' EDGES such as those seen in other Alla Prima painters (my style) is completely missing, at least in the demostration aspect of the book. I am in no position to critique the author's artwork and style. (Also, there are no points to do that.) However, a book about brushwork should definitely include those.

Briefly, the book is good (for beginners, especially), but it seems too basic and limited.

For Me, the Missing Piece
In spite of an extensive drawing background (I actually majored in art) I somehow never really learned how to paint. I have long been able to "color in" ink drawings & create sort of expressionistic painting-like things...but even when I've been able to pull something off I've felt like some core knowledge was simply missing & always will be.

But this book has opened the door! He explains right away that this book has no intention of teaching everything about painting, but has been created solely to focus on the very practical issue of how to actually apply paint to a surface depending on your goal. In spite of all the instruction that is out there, there is mystery in the actual process of touching a brush to the canvas which is rarely discussed.

What brushes are out there and what EXACTLY does each one do? How does paint respond depending on how much you have thinned it? How do you physically mix paints? (there are different ways depending on what you are going for) How do you load the brushes with paint (again depending on what you want to achieve)? What angle do you hold the brush to create a smooth, blended effect & how for a rougher look? All this and much much more, including the one section less directly related to brushwork about light.

There is so much information in this book, practical and helpful. Mr. Weber has a clear respect for a wide range of approaches to paintings and also presents ones that he himself does not use.

The diagrams analyzing different brushstrokes in various paintings is very demystifying. You look at a fabulous painting & hone in very clearly on specifically how the petals of the daisies were actually physically done, or the flow of the water, or the striation (stratification? sorry, I can't remember the word) of the rocks.

Basically, the book leaves you with a crucial portion of the tools you will need in your art study & gives you a specific independence that almost all other sources neglect.

I suggest you go to a bookstore & look through this book just a bit - and if it is what you need you will know without a doubt. I am SO glad that I chanced upon it because for me it was the missing piece.

a unique book for oil and acrylic painters
This book is fantastic! I have learned a few of the techniques through trial and error and others showed me why things weren't working for me. No oil book talks as much about HOW to paint with a brush. While primarily for oils, it is helpful for acrylics, too. Has great info on water-mixable oils, too.

motivating the cash potato to painlessly save and invest
Meany's quick read shows the cash potato how to find money--even when you think there's none left over--and snag it and make it grow! Down-to-earth, funny, practical, and SIMPLE ("quick and painless," he keeps hammering), the book is well laid-out and well indexed. Even *you* have time to read this book!

This is a good starter book for the uninitiated

It's the perfect book for people like me, a single mom in a secure job with some apprehension about having enough for retirement, with no idea about investing. It would also be a good book for a budding capitalist just starting his or her first job or young marrieds who wanted to get on track before they invested all their hard-earned on Williams-Sonoma's color-of-the-month Cuisinart. The book has neatly packaged chapters which you can skip around in. Though if you don't skip, the chapters keep building on previous ones so you have a sense in a nicely structured way of what this whole money mystery encompasses, in level of importance. I was mostly interested in investing, though there's lots of other information that makes it possible to have something to invest after you've cut expenses and made a will and made sure your insurance is right (well, OK, I didn't read that chapter yet).

I liked the specific examples of, say, discount brokers and internet sites for further research. At the end I didn't feel like I had to be a broker to play with the big kids. So I can read the bidness news now and cross-reference anything I don't understand with Meany's book and impress my kids with my astute planning for their inheritance. The writing has a calming effect, partly because of the humor and partly because of the simplicity with which this arcane knowledge is presented. What I like about all Meany's books is that they teach you to take a deep breath, and then get on with the business at hand.

This stuff really works!!
Just reviewed it today!! Having followed Meany's money advice for the past twenty two years, he's helped me to acquire a 6-figure portfolio, send a kid to college, acquire five different properties (sold three), and manage gifts from my parents' estate. I'm his wife and it works for me!!!

Pete Dye isn't out to get you.
Some think Pete Dye's golf courses are tricky or too hard. The courses Pete designs are built to be fair but punnishing for the right reasons. Played right, Pete's courses offer memorable rounds to the golfer. Now, it's not Pete who designs the course but a strong team of Pete, his wife Alice and his sons Perry and P.B. (architects in their own right) as well as the site managers and crews that are hired to do the building.

You'll learn that Pete designs courses on a sheet of paper and this is where his skills lie - understanding the land offered for the course and knowing how the wind and terrain will match in creating a great experience. Courses like PGA West, TPC Stadium (Sawgrass), The Pete Dye Club, Harbour Town and many others are discussed. One chapter per course.

Pete talks to you in this book. It's not an interview but it is presented as if Pete is telling you his life's story.

For a golfer looking for lessons, these are a different kind of lesson - from the eyes of a designer (and historically gifted golfer too). You will play better golf after you read this.

When you play a Pete Dye course, you'll remember Pete's words and how Alice was a main contributor to the design you're playing.

Work of a serious golf architect
Having played several of Dye's famous layouts, you realize this guy knows the game and challenges all facets of your shotmaking abilities (or should I say streches them.) Enjoyed the organization by layout. Must seem like real chapters in his life. Great book from a great architect.

Pete Dye is a natural wonder.
The whole Pete Dye story is here. Now I understand how Dye created the famous island green 17th at the Stadium Course at TPC and why Pete and his wife Alice were so heaviliy influenced by Scottish golf course design. This is a terrific book, with photos of all of his great courses.

Japanvisitor.com Review
The premise of this book is that "schools and textbooks are important vehicles through which contemporary societies transmit ideas of citizenship and both the idealized past and the promised future". The 10 chapters look at how World War II and the Vietnam War are represented in school history textbooks in the 3 countries. Almost 50 years after the end of the war, controversy over Japanese text books continues to rage, and this book is useful to put that into some sort of perspective. Of the 10 chapters, 6 deal with Japan, including a chapter with all the details of Saburo Ienaga's famous textbook lawsuits against the Japanese government, and a couple of chapters on joint history projects between Japan and Korea, and Japan and the U.S. The common conception is that Japan has not yet faced up to its wartime past, and while I agree, after reading this book my view has been somewhat softened. Compared with the U.S.A., Japan has done more to teach its young about the negative side of its wars. If you enjoyed reading Ian Buruma's Wages of Guilt, then you will enjoy this book.

Should be required for High School/College Hist teachers
This is the best collection of essays on the "uses" of history and construction of national "memories" that I have read. This should be required reading in every high school social studies/history teacher certification program, and should be read by all who want to enter the debate on standardized testing and prescriptive curriculum content. I have used selections of it in my college level Japanese history course, my college level world history courses, and recommend it to my colleagues and also to the many high school teachers with whom I work. It shares valuable lessons on the manipulation of history for nationalistic and/or militaristic purposes. It should also be read by educational, defense, and foreign policy-makers as well as journalists who often seem too quick to pass on widely held myths as truths. Alas, I am afraid that many in these positions are more comfortable with the myths.

Fascinating, challenging, highly informative essays
Censoring History: Citizenship And Memory In Japan, Germany, And The United States is a fascinating, challenging, well written and highly informative anthology of essays about how history is almost inevitably distorted and revised by subsequent generations to meet their social, political and cultural needs and myths -- and how such unwarranted revisions must be countered with an coherent understanding of the politics of education, from the writing and publication of textbooks to curriculum development and classroom instruction practices. Censoring History is critically important reading for anyone seeking to understand how and why the needs of nationalism would and do distort the recording and transmission of history, and the peril future generations are put to as those who do not know their history are so often doomed to repeat it in an age where nuclear war could end civilization and even the human race.

enjoyable with some small flaws
Changeling: the Dreaming has many virtues and a few flaws. White Wolf has done it again. Their latest effort has many virtues. The background is wonderful and full of suprises. The blend of old stories with modern settings has many opportunities for fun and exciting role-playing. The character types are very interesting and varied. The artwork throughout the book is excellent and all of the pages are in full color. There are a couple of flaws. The first is many aspects of the game are very ambigious. A great deal of interpretation is needed in many places. The system for glamour (magic) given uses cards and is very cumbersome. The rest of the system is standard White Wolf fare. I would reccomend buying this game because it is a lot of fun to play. The player's guide (sold seperately) help clear up many aspects of the game and is almost a neccessity.

changling
An excellent read. much better written then many other rpg's and much more thought out. as you read more suppliments the game gets more elaborate and thrilling.

Best White Wolf Game!!!
Forget the others. This is the one. The artwork is great, the descriptions and settings are great. The magic system IS a bit ambiguous, but who cares? It's not an impossible task to work SOMETHING out and your creative investment is well worth it. I haven't played with the next edition, but the artwork isn't nearly as good, and I get the feeling that the only reason they have a new edition at all is to make the system less all-inclusive, to sell supplements. You don't even really need to buy any of the books besides this one, especially if you have the Player's Guide to another WW game. Get out of your deep dark danky dungeons of despair for one night and give this one a shot. Buy before they've all disappeared!

The "Test" was great!
I really thought that the story about cheating, "The Test", was a valuable lesson for all students, regardless of faith. The structure and craftsmanship was equisite. Over all, I am tiring of this series but have alot of hope for it now. Well done, Ms. Ayers and Canfield/Hansen of course.
Once again, this series has made an outstanding contribution to the lives of people everywhere. In these troubled times, it is truly a blessing that this thoughtful volume has been provided for Christian teens everywhere.
The reason why this series has struck such a chord with readers across generations is the feeling of authenticity it generates within readers. My only criticism is that some of the stories sometimes seem a bit formulaic. A striking exception is found in the story "The Test", which involves the dilemma of a student who cheats on a school exam. The narrative pulls off the rare combination of being impecably written while still ringing true with its audience. As someone who works with young people on a regular basis, I know it will inspire my students for years to come. Thank you.

The most inspirational book I have ever read
I never write reviews, but everyone needs to know how wonderful and what an impact this book can have on a person. I am not a very religious person, but I picked up this book and found, that being religious or not had nothing to do with enjoying and appreciating this book. I LOVED IT and could relate so much thank you KIMBERLY KIRBERGER, once again.

A Great Read!!!
The minute I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. As an reader of the Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul series I was blown away by this particular book. I found it inspiring and moving, making me laugh and even cry. I recommend it to any teenager who wants to feel more connected to Christianity and regain their sense of faith.

tasting notes
Hello, I just want to know if the book of american whiskeys includes tasting notes of several american bourbons and whiskeys, and do you know others books that includes tasting notes. Thanks so lot to give me these informations, Yours sincerely Thierry

Well-written, informative and fun!
This book, written by two philosophy professors on a crusade to understand whiskey and relay their findings, gives a good encapsulated history of Bourbon and an understandable explanation of its processes. Then they give tasting notes on vitually every Bourbon and Tennessee whiskey available (or soon to be) in 1995. This book gave me a deeper appreciation of Kentucky's home-grown art, several very enjoyable nights of reading (with a selected Bourbon at my side), and an enthusiasm to try (lots) of new whiskeys. I've given several copies away. Never had more fun learning!

A bible of the only true American spirit, American whiskey
This is an excellent book on American whiskey which is the only spirit developed in the U.S. It demonstrates how the history of the United States is tied with the history of its whiskey. The author makes a case for the fact that the loss of grain purchases to produce alcohol greatly hurt the economy before the Great Depression as did the loss of jobs in the distilling industry. The loss of alcohol tax revenues hurt the government. Whiskey then was an important part of American history.

The book also describes the distilling and aging process. It covers all of the major American distillers and their whiskeys. The anecdotes about the people who craft the whiskeys really give you an inside view of the industry. Most whiskeys have tasting notes and it concludes with a selection of recipes and the method for conducting a tasting. This book is my guidebook to explore our only native spirit.

One of The better Marvel compilations.
Captain America has been drawn into the chase for all 6 segments of an object of reputed occult powers, The Bloodstone. Also on the trail in Baron Helmut Zemo along with his mercenaries Batroc, Machete and Zaran. So alongside his former foe, Diamondback, Captain America must travel the world in this deadly race for the Bloodstone. Little do the rivals know, that there is also a third party with an interest in the stone.

This trade paperback collects issues #357 - #364 of Captain America which involves a very fast paced, Indiana Jones type action/adventure, sees a kindling romance between Cap and his former foe, Diamondback, plus introduces us to a new extremely dangerous foe, Crossbones.

The artwork from Kieron Dwyer is fantastic, storytelling from Mark Gruenwald in superb, his run on Captain America being one of the best. One of the better Marvel collections out there. RECOMMENDED!!!!

A great read from Captain America's best writer!
Mark Gruenwald and his team wrote Captain America better any others to work on Cap before or since, and The Bloodstone Hunt is a perfect example of this. It's a Indiana Jones-like 6 issue story arc which also features Cap's best girlfriend ever- Diamondback, and also Baron Zemo, Crossbones, and Batroc! I almost wish that I didnt have the comics so I could read this for the first time, just great stuff. And, this story arc was just one of many great ones from Gruenwald and company, there was also the Scourge arc, the Streets of Poison arc, the "New Captain America John Walker" arc, "The Death of Cap", the Serpent Society issues, among many others. Just excellent, excellent reading.

Cap's most entertaining adventure to date.
It's got everything you could possibly want - exotic locations, dastardly villains, damsels in distress, a race against time for a weapon of immense power, and everyone's favorite Blue Boyscout -- Captain America! All I can describe it as is Captain America meets Indiana Jones. It's my most favorite Cap run of all time, and the love interest, Diamondback, is the best to date. Please come back to the title Mr. Gruenwald! And bring Kieron with you...

Goodness Gorillas
This book is good for little kids. It is about a group of kids that are called the Goodness Gorillas. They work hard to do nice things like clean up garbage, sharpen pencils for their class, and bring in snacks for the class, ect. Even though they work really hard, a boy named Todd ruins it all!!!!!! What are they going to do? Will Todd stop messing every thing up? Can they still be the Goodness Gorillas? To find out read the book!

An enduring story about kindness
When the "Goodness Gorillas" start doing kind things for other people everyone pitches in except Todd. In the end the children learn the value of kindness, even to those who are not kind to us.

One of the books in the Chicken Soup for Little Souls' series, this book offers a nice story to read to your children - a story with a moral. It's my least favorite in the series, but it's still a good book to have on your child's shelf.

There is still Goodness in the World!
I have to say I was a bit skeptical of the whole 'Chicken Soup' theme, but this book is wonderful. The story is very sweet and reminds all of us about how we can change the world with the little things we do. I found it especially helpful after the attacks of 9/11, when I wondered how to teach our children about spreading kindness and goodness in the world. Highly recommended!
