Depression or Spiritual Dark Night!
The author shares experiences of a bout or depression or is it the dark night of the soul (spiritually speaking). It was good to read of someone's experiences who were similar to mine. I'm a Christian dealing with depression over childhood issues and at the same time experiencing spiritual abandonment. The author shares the struggle between knowing in our heads and from our past that God is present but the emotional and internal feeling that God is no longer around. This book is the only contemporary writing that I have found on what early Christian mystics (John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila) described as the dark night of the soul. After sharing his experience the author analyzes the theological/spiritual conclusions he has drawn from the experience. Some of his theology is creative, interesting but not mainstream fundamental beliefs.

offers REAL hope for those struggling with depression
This is an incredible book about depression from someone who has experienced it. I personally was encouraged by the author's honesty about his personal struggle with depression and what he learned from it. I have recently heard that this book is out of print which frustrates me. During my struggle with depression it was the only book that made me feel like I was not at the end of my rope but instead gave me hope!!

Strategic Geography and the Changing Middle East
Published in Hardcover by The Brookings Institution (June, 1997)
Authors: Geoffrey Kemp, Robert E. Harkavy, and Anne W. Marks
Amazon base price: $52.95
Average review score:

Dry But Worth the Effort
Obviously, this book is not fireside reading and should be seen more as a reference.

Nevertheless, as the authors argue, whatever theory of international relations you subscribe to--clash of civilizations, multipolarity, etc.--the Middle East remains square in the middle of it all and needs to be better understood by the average citizen. If Sept. 11 didn't drive that little lesson home, I don't know what will.

It was fascinating to see how the lay of the land shapes a region's history and even the attitudes of its residents. The book gives ample attention to not just topography, but climate, resources, migration, and how all these factors shape policy and the movement of armies.

Overall, this is a much needed book. There's a lot of data to plough through, but it's worth it.

Dates but still good.
Stratefic Geography and the Changing Middle East came out in 1997 so some information about the region has changed since then but the book provides a sueful introduction into the issues of the middle east such as the importance of oil and gas in the region and these issues have influenced attempts to control the region. The book also focuses on military planning and operations such as the Gulf War and Weapons of mass destruction.

Thought provoking; a good read
The Sandman is the latest serial killer to catch the attention of the public. He is a madman who confines his murders to women living on the lower east side of Manhattan. The media gave him his moniker because of his ability to slip unnoticed into the living quarters of his victims. Unlike his mythological namesake who gently puts people to sleep, the killer uses an ice pick to pluck out the eyes of his victims. Through his window, Michael Carpo, a TV news writer, notices a man in a trench coat running at the same time he hears woman screaming.

The hysterical woman has just discovered the mutilated corpse of her neighbor, Cheryl White. The police believe that Cheryl is latest casualty of the feared Sandman. Instead of just reporting the story, Carpo has become part of the story. He begins to investigate the death of Cheryl. He soon learns that the Sandman goes after brown eyed girls, not blue eyed like Cheryl was. If he continues down the path he has chosen, Carpo may find his life is the next offering of a copy cat killer.

Mark Miano's latest novel is a very good story that is loaded with action, well-developed characters, and incredible layers of atmosphere that capture the reader's notice. Though atmospheric based books typically fail, in the hands of Mr. Miano the story becomes a one sitter. The ending is a total surprise as a murder mystery inserted within a murder mystery is cleverly accomplished. Fans of serial killers and who-done-its in general will want to visit THE STREET WHERE SHE LIVED because this is one trip that will not disappoint anyone.

No sophomore slump here...
Mark Miano's second book featuring Channel 8 newswriter Michael Carpo is an exciting story with plenty of action and enough twists and turns to keep readers guessing. When a serial killer named the Sandman strikes in the East Village, Michael Carpo is drawn into the investigation because not only is he a witness to the crime, but the victim, a young flight attendant, was his neighbor. Mark Miano sets himself apart from other writers in the genre by not only delivering good stories without depending on graphic violence or profanity, but by giving us believable characters that the reader can like and care about. **Don't miss FLESH AND STONE, the first book to feature Micahel Carpo.

Needed Book
At a time when there is a cultural rage for "tribal tattooing," there is a scarcity of materials on Polynesian tattooing. This book finally addresses that need. The book contains many historical photographs of examples of 7 different polynesian culture's uses of tattoo. Brief summaries examine each area's history and methods for tattooing. The book is very attractively done. Recommended for anyone serious about tattooing.

Keeping tradition alive
It i great to know there are books like this that are out that can help the younger polynesian generation learn about their ansetries art and culture.

A Good Introduction to Charting With Telechart 2000
This is a good introduction to technical analysis of stocks. It is best used in conjunction with the Telechart 2000 software and data.

If you subscribe to Telechart or are thinking of using their software, this is a great place to start since the author gives you the formulas of TC2000 to do technical analysis.

Great Book!
Once again, Mr. Larson has come through for me. I have seen him on T.V. and attended some of his seminars. I also have his last book "Trading Stocks On-line". He knows what he is talking about. As long as I stick with him, I'm sure to be successful. Thanx Mr. Larson.

Zany Retro-Futurist Fun
Kind of noirish, kind of retro-futurish (think Art Deco and Streamline design), Terminal City is loose but entertaining story of aging daredevils and a mysterious briefcase. The city is a vividly reimagined New York (complete with Coney Island) with beautiful lines, a monorail, zeppelins, and all manner of lovely to look at decay-here, flyers and newspapers are always billowing in the wind at the edges of panels. The plot is a zany half-baked affair involving a crooked mayor, crooked industrialist, land schemes, a mysterious cases, missing legendary crown jewels, a naive newcomer to town, an old boxer, and too many others to mention. While the hero is nominally Cosmo Quinn, former "Human Fly" daredevil turned window washer, the Grand Hotel-like plot jumps between multiple stories and people. Readers will catch references and homages to Kiss Me Deadly (the pinnacle of noir film), Fawlty Towers (John Cleese's hilarious post-Python British screwball comedy), Tintin (the European comic series), Abbott and Costello, Orwell and Huxley (although this futurist vision is much more benign than theirs), Casablanca, and many others. The art is straightforward and easy to look at, while the colors and vivid and expressive, a very fun experience overall-although the punning gets too cutesy at times.

An altenative future world comes to life.
Termial City is an award nominated series which is, strangly enough, set in the advanced East Coast US metropolis "Terminal City". This comic revolves around a group of modern day Daredevils, primarily Cosmo Quinn, "the Human Fly" who scales the tallest of buildings as well as living a double life cleaning the windows of such glass towers. The Streamline styling harks back to the thirties, the sky filled with enormous zepplins captained by German aviators, high speed trains cross the Atlantic with the greatest of ease whilst surly dome topped robots keep things running smoothly and on the other hand cause total havoc. This is an another excellent book from Vertigo, very well written and researched as well as paying homage to great authors such as George Orwell and Aldous Huxley.

Excellent summary of major theories
Fortier's book is a wonderful summary of the major theories concerning theater and performance. He presents a familiarity with everyone from Freud and Hegel to current leading theorists. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in critical theory of theater, especially for students. Fortier's style is engaging and easy to read.

Excellent, invaluable guide to theater and theory
*Theory/Theatre* is a remarkable pocket-sized guide to the major contemporary trends in critical theory and their relationships to performance and performance studies. Fortier's prose is lucid and eloquent. He handles difficult concepts with succinct yet not simplistic essays that tie the theoretical concepts to instances of performance. I have used the book with undergraduates, and it has helped them make sense of the intellectual histories, differences and applications of, for instance, psychoanalytic criticism, post-structuralism, feminism, reception theory, etc. Fortier's concluding essay on the uses of theory is both skeptical and inspired by theory, and gorgeously written. Such a pleasure to work with an interpetive text that is truly knowing of its subjects without seeking to outdistance or subdue them!

Things to Worry about in case you run out
I love this book!! I love all kinds of books like this. I am a natural born worrier, and a friend of mine gave me this book for my birthday a few months ago, and it cracks me up!

LEN CELLA IS THE KING OF COMEDY!
Len Cella is one of the greatest comics of the last 100 years. He should be a household name, but instead his material is constantly stolen by inferior performers. Len has also written, produced, and starred in over 800 movies. Most of them appear on the VHS extravaganza "MORON MOVIES", and are less than 10 seconds long, but they've still been highly rated by some of the most respected critics in the world today. I highly recommend this book, as well as Len Cella's Moron Movies on VHS.

Thomist Realism and the Critique of Knowledge
Published in Paperback by Ignatius Press (June, 1986)
Authors: Etienne Gilson and Mark A. Wauck
Amazon base price: $12.95
Average review score:

Excellent Work, but not Easy
If you don't know Latin, you will have trouble fully understanding what Gilson says, for he uses many Latin quotes from St. Thomas, and Latin slogans, which are left untranslated. The book is a terrific examination and refutation of the recent attempts of neo-Thomists to establish a "critical ralism," which, so Gilson argues, is impossible because it is self-contradictory. There is no such thing as a critical realism. Gilson shows and explains why true Thomistic/Aristotelian realism is beyond the Critique of Knowledge and refuses to pose the critical problem. As soon as one accepts the Cartesian Cogito as one's starting point, it is inevitable that one will fall into idealism. True realism defies the Cogito, and can do so reasonably, for it starts with the true first principle, which is being. An excellet book by an excellent neo-Thomistic author, but sometimes hard to understand. What a pity it's out of print...

A Critique of Modernism for Our Times
Etienne Gilson brilliantly plumbs the depths of Thomistic Realism, and false Thomisms as well, in this answer to Kantian modernism. The volume, exquisitely translated, is 'must reading' for any student entering the modern university. This book brings the essential elements of philosophy into view as a cohesive, readily understandable, and erudite structure, and does so rigorously in the best tradition of St. Thomas. If you must read only one book on philosophy or if you want to make philosophy you life's work, read this book first.

Touching account of a family's love for their unborn child
I came to read this book while searching for a friend on methods to repair the delicate membranes. I found this book to be incredibly uplifting. It's an example of how hope, love and faith when working together can turn the impossible into a miracle.

Great Book!
I read this book a few years ago. It was a great story of medicine, family, and faith, and it was very inspiring. This true story shows what we can do to save the lives of babies in the womb. I recommend it to anyone.
