Throughout the book, Professor Zuss brings the insights of Derrida, Foucault, Lejune, & Co. (and John Dewey) to bear on how life-writing can be used by educators to empower marginalized students in a diverse, urban environment. Zuss persuasively argues that, by studying the theory and practice of life-writing, teachers and students can become aware of how their own life-writings reflect the way that they see themselves. While recognizing that changing people's written self-representations will not in and of itself change their material conditions, Zuss explores how experimenting with alternative modes can give people the tools to change the nature of their self-conception and their relationship to the prevailing order, perhaps ultimately leading them to take actions that impact their material conditions as well.
If we had more educators like Professor Zuss, the world would be a better place. It was heart-warming to find one. It gave me hope for the future.
And there are a couple of extra added bonuses to "Subject Present":
Bonus 1: Professor Zuss must have been a poet in a past life. An example: "From heron tracks in the Chinese sand, to the grain in bark and in hands, the reading of the night sky or the glare of pixel images on a hypertext screen, we have always been pattern makers."
Bonus 2: For those interested in the study of autobiography and memoir a la James Olney (Memory and Narrative) and Herbert Leibowitz (Fabricating Lives), Zuss offers a valuable extension and alternative viewpoint based on more contemporary life-writings.

I seen the enemy attacking me but not capable of fighting back.
Once I began to see what the devil was doing I bagan to come against him with Gods word.I see much differently now.
Howard's great love for horses and deep satisfaction come out strongly in the book. It's great to know that some people still live the life that gives them the most pleasure instead of racing and chasing after money. He showed real sense in refusing those tempting offers to go to New York and Toronto.
It's a great book...and this comes from and Oxford graduate!
The stories are hilarious, and it's amazing to believe that they're actually true! People never cease to amaze me....
I definitely recommend this book to everyone!

Remember those naming games you played on summer nights? "If you were on a desert island, but could have one book with you, what would it be?" When I go up the Amazon, I'll be carrying this little tome under my arm.
Before then, I will enjoy the adventure story and recommend it to others; use the bibliography for further research on the history of the rainforest; make lists of the flora, especially medicinal remedies, mentioned; trace along a map the various routes Plotkin took on his travels through Brazil, Surinam, and along the borders of Colombia and Venezuela. I could teach a year-long course based on the information in this book. What an English course that would be with all the links to ecology, botany, language studies, sociology, anthropology, survival training, medicine--the list goes on.
Am I enthusiastic about Plotkin's work? It is the best book I have read in years even though, teaching literature, I read many fine books. It has affected me the way some people are converted by religion. If you have ever held a thoughtful concern for the rainforest or indigenous peoples or our earth or oxygen, it will affect you, too.
Using a scholarly approach to his highly readable story makes this accessible to professional botanists or historians as well as to us lay people. The photographs each speak their thousand words and are worth the price of the book in themselves. What Rachel Carson did for the dangers of environmental pollution, Mark Plotkin does for the destruction of the fragile rainforest.
Another game you played on summer nights--asking impossible questions like "If a tree fell in a forest, but no one were there to hear it, would it create a sound?" Plotkins makes indelibly clear the effect the fallen trees of the rainfore! sts have on us all.

One of the things that I came across here, that I hadn't seen elsewhere, was a discussion on art and music. He had some great quotes: in trying to figure out what some modernist abstraction means, he says, "It always takes the artist to show us the vision, but of course, in the meantime, it is difficult to interpret these things." (pg. 28). He ties that whole discussion into one of my favorite topics, which is pattern, or "li." There was another quote I particularly liked, this time distinguishing between "good" and "bad" music: "Bad music always expresses something other than itself, like the 1812 Overture or the Sunken Cathedral. But good music never refers to anything other than the music. If you ask Bach, "What is your meaning?" he would say, "Listen! That is the meaning." This whole book was filled with essays on meaning and pattern, and I found it a joy to read. Overall, I have really enjoyed all the books I've read in his "The Love of Wisdom Library."

It teaches you the fundamentals, as well as showing you around inside the PC itself with its labeled photographs. You learn a lot more than Upgrading your PC; you will get familiarized with how each component inside your PC works without getting confused with PC language jargon. Actually, when you encounter jargon in a section of the book, they will explain what it means exactly in words you can understand.
The book is very simple so I don't think people that are familiar with their PC's would find this helpful. For beginners, this would prevent you from getting frustated with those hard-bound, 5" thick PC books. You can get those later after you get the main idea of how your pc works, how you get around your pc, how you upgrade it, and perhaps how to build one; which is what this book will help you know.
If you want to know more than what this book covers, get PC Hardware in a Nutshell. Great stuff!
