First off the shelf
I am a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist with more than a dozen textbooks on medical therapy in pregnancy in my library. However, I rarely refer to any other book. This book is the most comprehensive, covering topics rarely addressed in other texts while remaining eminently readable. Definitely the one MFM text that should be included in any medical library.

INDISPENSABLE
This is by far the best, most comprehensive, most useful reference book in my office. Everything you could possible need to know about medical or surgical problems in pregnancy is in this book from scorpion stings to heavy metal poisoning to Von Hippel-Lindau disease and every common and uncommon diagnosis in between. It is the first and usually only reference book I need. The third edition is even better than the second edition was. Definitely worth upgrading.

Subject Present: Life-Writing and Strategies of Representation (Counterpoints (Peter Lang), Vol 78)

Excellent!! Teach life-writing for self-awareness and change
This wonderful book is about changing people's lives through the educational process. It is a book in the tradition of Friere. Professor Zuss has clearly read and thought deeply about the nature of autobiography (life-writing, as he calls it). He makes frequent reference to his experiences as an active teacher in the New York City area; he teaches both graduate students studying to teach literacy and undergraduate students. "Subject Present" is a bridge between the too often rarified atmosphere of theoretical speculation and the classroom as a place where people's lives can be changed. In Chapter 9, Prof. Zuss gives before and after examples showing how student's life-writings were changed by exposure to the life-writings of Cixous, Andaluza, Lorde, and the post-modern theorists.

Throughout the book, Professor Zuss brings the insights of Derrida, Foucault, Lejune, & Co. (and John Dewey) to bear on how life-writing can be used by educators to empower marginalized students in a diverse, urban environment. Zuss persuasively argues that, by studying the theory and practice of life-writing, teachers and students can become aware of how their own life-writings reflect the way that they see themselves. While recognizing that changing people's written self-representations will not in and of itself change their material conditions, Zuss explores how experimenting with alternative modes can give people the tools to change the nature of their self-conception and their relationship to the prevailing order, perhaps ultimately leading them to take actions that impact their material conditions as well.

If we had more educators like Professor Zuss, the world would be a better place. It was heart-warming to find one. It gave me hope for the future.

And there are a couple of extra added bonuses to "Subject Present":

Bonus 1: Professor Zuss must have been a poet in a past life. An example: "From heron tracks in the Chinese sand, to the grain in bark and in hands, the reading of the night sky or the glare of pixel images on a hypertext screen, we have always been pattern makers."

Bonus 2: For those interested in the study of autobiography and memoir a la James Olney (Memory and Narrative) and Herbert Leibowitz (Fabricating Lives), Zuss offers a valuable extension and alternative viewpoint based on more contemporary life-writings.

Shows the social and political forces which impact literacy.
This book gives insights into the components which impact society's standards and illusions about literacy. The author, socially aware and concerned about the "politics" of education and the devasting impact it can have on shaping our definition of literacy, gives a clear understanding of how powerful these forces really are. Great reading for all who are concerned about the issues which concern the present and future state of literacy in this country. Bravo!

An absolute thrill !!!
What a thrill !!! With its exciting and controversial plot this novel is filled with sexy, suspenceful situations that will leave you waiting for it in theaters. This novel provides clever ideas and a new point of view on the legalization of drugs to decrease crime rate against innocent fellow Americans.

Great book
I understand this is the author's first novel. It is a great book! The plot was exciting and the characters were real. I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes a good mystery.

Laughing the Pounds Away
Hard core dieters may be stunned by this book's format, but I LOVED IT! Dieting should never be taken too seriously and this book conveys the idea that dieting doesn't have to be a painful process. Humorous and smart, Sully Baby has helped me lose 18 pounds in only 73 days.

#1 diet advice
Great book if your really want to lose weight. It's as easy as 1-2-3! More writers should boil it down to the essence as Mr. Sullivan has done. This book is common sense with a smile!

Tactical Warfare by Jym Moore
In this book Jym compares the life of a christian as to a military soldier. As a soldier in God's army we must always be prepared for the enemy. We don't know from where he will strike but we do know God will furnish us all the necessary weapons to win the war against him. God's grace is more than sufficient to see us through each battle but we must ready ourselves. Jym shows us how to do this. Anyone who reads this book with an open heart will move closer to God,our Captain. Take the Challenge.

Awareness
I found the book to be what I needed for this time in my life.
I seen the enemy attacking me but not capable of fighting back.
Once I began to see what the devil was doing I bagan to come against him with Gods word.I see much differently now.

Tales from the Saddle - Great book!
I've read it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Many of the tales made me smile, and I was interested to learn about horses and his life with them.

Howard's great love for horses and deep satisfaction come out strongly in the book. It's great to know that some people still live the life that gives them the most pleasure instead of racing and chasing after money. He showed real sense in refusing those tempting offers to go to New York and Toronto.

It's a great book...and this comes from and Oxford graduate!

What a great book!
This is such a fun book to read....

The stories are hilarious, and it's amazing to believe that they're actually true! People never cease to amaze me....

I definitely recommend this book to everyone!

It was like being in the Amazon rainforest
Originally purchased book for research on the natives, flora and fauna and mysteries of the Amazon rainforest. Enjoyed Plotkin's tale of his travel(s) into the jungle and the natives with whom he interacted and from whom he gathered information about the medicinal properties of rainforest plants.

A fascinating and pertinent MUST-read for all adults
"Everything you wanted to know about entering the Brazilian Rainforest, and more" could be the subtitle of this unusual but riveting nonfiction work Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice by an ethnobotanist, Mark Plotkin.

Remember those naming games you played on summer nights? "If you were on a desert island, but could have one book with you, what would it be?" When I go up the Amazon, I'll be carrying this little tome under my arm.

Before then, I will enjoy the adventure story and recommend it to others; use the bibliography for further research on the history of the rainforest; make lists of the flora, especially medicinal remedies, mentioned; trace along a map the various routes Plotkin took on his travels through Brazil, Surinam, and along the borders of Colombia and Venezuela. I could teach a year-long course based on the information in this book. What an English course that would be with all the links to ecology, botany, language studies, sociology, anthropology, survival training, medicine--the list goes on.

Am I enthusiastic about Plotkin's work? It is the best book I have read in years even though, teaching literature, I read many fine books. It has affected me the way some people are converted by religion. If you have ever held a thoughtful concern for the rainforest or indigenous peoples or our earth or oxygen, it will affect you, too.

Using a scholarly approach to his highly readable story makes this accessible to professional botanists or historians as well as to us lay people. The photographs each speak their thousand words and are worth the price of the book in themselves. What Rachel Carson did for the dangers of environmental pollution, Mark Plotkin does for the destruction of the fragile rainforest.

Another game you played on summer nights--asking impossible questions like "If a tree fell in a forest, but no one were there to hear it, would it create a sound?" Plotkins makes indelibly clear the effect the fallen trees of the rainfore! sts have on us all.

The Tall Ship in Art
This is the greatest book I ever found about ancient ship painting. It took me such a long time to find this kind of wonderful book. It is a must buy for a marine painting lover or artist

A superb portrait of the classic age of sail
The clarity and color of the reproductions of marine paintings in this book are nothing less than superb. While the individual styles and, to some extent, the specific subject matter of the five artists vary, I find it impossible to single out any one of them as being "better" than the others. Each is a highly talented artist who brings the past to life in a most convincing manner. While men-of-war are probably the most frequent subject of the paintings in this book, merchant vessels and ships of exploration and even of pleasure are not neglected. It is pure joy to just leaf through this volume and gaze at the wealth of images. Anyone who is fascinated by the sea and sailing ships cannot fail to be enchanted by this book.

Enlightening
I feel that this is the most important book I have ever read in my life. This is only the second Alan Watts book I've read so far, so I'm new to his philosophies. I have to go buy more of his books now. If you only read one book this year, make it this one.

Brilliant, clear, and fun
On the one hand, there was very little in this book that I haven't found in other books by Watts, so that was a little disappointing. If you have read many of his works, you might consider skipping this one. On the other hand, I enjoy his writing so much, even though I really don't share his worldview, that I don't mind a re-run. On the third hand, the new material I did find, was very enlightening.

One of the things that I came across here, that I hadn't seen elsewhere, was a discussion on art and music. He had some great quotes: in trying to figure out what some modernist abstraction means, he says, "It always takes the artist to show us the vision, but of course, in the meantime, it is difficult to interpret these things." (pg. 28). He ties that whole discussion into one of my favorite topics, which is pattern, or "li." There was another quote I particularly liked, this time distinguishing between "good" and "bad" music: "Bad music always expresses something other than itself, like the 1812 Overture or the Sunken Cathedral. But good music never refers to anything other than the music. If you ask Bach, "What is your meaning?" he would say, "Listen! That is the meaning." This whole book was filled with essays on meaning and pattern, and I found it a joy to read. Overall, I have really enjoyed all the books I've read in his "The Love of Wisdom Library."

Good for starters who is not familiar with pc vocabulary
It says Upgrading Your PC, but actually it is a lot more than that. I have bought this and PC Hardware in a Nutshell and you can right away tell the difference. Both books are great but this one would be more helpful for beginners like me. If you are just starting to get interested on how that little machine of yours work, then this is the book for you.

It teaches you the fundamentals, as well as showing you around inside the PC itself with its labeled photographs. You learn a lot more than Upgrading your PC; you will get familiarized with how each component inside your PC works without getting confused with PC language jargon. Actually, when you encounter jargon in a section of the book, they will explain what it means exactly in words you can understand.

The book is very simple so I don't think people that are familiar with their PC's would find this helpful. For beginners, this would prevent you from getting frustated with those hard-bound, 5" thick PC books. You can get those later after you get the main idea of how your pc works, how you get around your pc, how you upgrade it, and perhaps how to build one; which is what this book will help you know.

If you want to know more than what this book covers, get PC Hardware in a Nutshell. Great stuff!
