Excellent Story - needs more details
There is an excellent story in this book. It is the true story of a boy named Evan, raised by unconventional parents, who grows up to be a compassionate, industrious young man. Admired by his peers as well as the adults in his life, Evan's talents, intelligence and honesty touch everyone in the small town where he lives.

Evan's untimely death at thirteen alters the emotional landscape of the town of Groton.

Evan¿s Earthly Adventure
Ordinarily, I would tear through book at this length (180 pages) in an evening or two. However, this was not the case with Mark Holofcener's written work entitled, Evan's Early Adventure. I found myself with this intense need to sip each page slowly, rather than the typical guzzling I tend to do.

This book is far more than mere words on paper expressing love for the passing of a father's son. These words go beyond a typical tribute story written in memory of a loved one. Though this is relatively short in length, the content is very rich . . . much like the short, yet full life described in the book.

Set up in journal format, Mark Holofcenter's journeys through his feelings and the events of both his son's life and death. Through letters, poetry and IM conversations, Mark is able to appreciate the Evan he already knew as well as discover a new side of him know to his peers and close friends.

Despite the fact that this tragedy occurred so painfully close to the September 11th attacks, no mention of this was made in the book. Thought it happened eleven days before, September 1st, you'll only find mention of it in the clergy's online annual report. This is an impressive point as well as an important one because the book isn't about national events; it's about Evan. The author never lost sight of this fact, even when exploring his own feelings.

When researching this occurrence, small tributes were evident in a multiple of ways. Mentions are made in the minutes of the school's committee meeting September 3rd, Evan's name is listed in Internet profiles and, as mentioned earlier in this review, in the clergy's annual report just to name a few.

As a new mother of two very young boys, one three and the other ten months, this book really opened my eyes to a lot. All their lives I've been focusing on what they're individual accomplishments are and how they've been developing. I think it would be just as important for me to enjoy these milestones with them more, rather than focusing on what should be happening next and if I recorded it in their journal or not.

A wonderful book about Evan and his Life
...This book is an excellent book about life and death, and how to make the most of it. I recommend everyone reads it.

The Gilded Dinosaur: The Fossil War Between E.D. Cope and O.C. Marsh and the Rise of American Science

Disappointing, but not without merit.
Mark Jaffe's account of the infamous feud between Cope and Marsh is neither as well written nor as well researched as D. R. Wallace's book on the same subject (The Bonehunter's Revenge). But it is a fairly enjoyable read and paints a reasonably accurate and lively portrait of vertebrate paleontology (and the life of paleontologists) during the second half of the 19th century.

Interesting Story Bogged Down by Superfluous Details
Not a bad book--and certainly the material's exciting. The best past was at the beginning, when both men were working the field every year. My main problem was the weight the author gave to different parts of the story. For example, he states almost casually that it was Marsh who made the "biggest palentological error in history" by putting the wrong head on the Brontosaurus, causing the Apatosaurus/Brontosaurus confusion, but never gets back to who figured out the error. He gives a disporportionate amount of weight to parts of the story that just weren't as important, such as Cope's financial problems and the silver mines. Also-I do have a sneaking admiration for Marsh--he may not have been writing touching letter to his daughter, as Cope did, but he did much more to promote fair treatment of the Indians, etc. As I said, not bad, but still not the definitive book.

Grammar cost it a star, but very good otherwise
I found this book to be very well researched and interesting, but unfortunately somewhat poorly written. There are many grammatical errors and typos that should have been caught by the editors but weren't, which made me feel like I was reading a rough draft. Other than that annoying flaw, it's well worth reading.

Ambling about in Fantasyland
You're enjoyment of "How the Heather Looks" may be in direct proportion to your ability to instantly recall scenes from classic British children's books. And not just the "classic" classics, mind you, but some rather obscure works indeed, classic for their quality instead of their familiarity. Do you know the illustrated verses of Randolph Caldecott? How about Arthur Ransome's "Swallows and Amazons" or Kipling's "Puck of Pook's Hill?"

I found that my interest waxed and waned along with my familiarity. I was thrilled to go to Tintagel and Sherwood Forest in search of King Arthur and Robin Hood. I delighted to visit with Mrs. Millne in the Hundred Acre Wood of Winnie the Pooh. Toad Hall and Rat's Riverbank are well-traveled terrain. Less so are the lands of The Borrower's, or the Gypsy Caravans or Pook's Hill. (I winced when they drove past Anlwick Castle without stoping. They missed out on quite an experience.)

The writing is very much like that of a person keeping a journal. Details do not fit into a story, and the narrative drifts along with the same randomness of the family. The only voice is Joan Bodger's, and her husband and children are foils for her to act upon.

All in all, it is a very pleasant little book that I enjoyed reading. I know I would have enjoyed it more if I had a library of British children's literature to browse through for familiarity.

A Wonderful Vacation
If you love children's books and/or are an Anglophile at heart, you will love this book. The Bodger family is on a quest around England to find Pooh's Enchanted Place, Toad Hall and other places from classic British children's books. In addition to enjoying their literary discoveries, I enjoyed Joan Bodger's descriptions of the special challenges of traveling with young children. Food, laundry, and places for their children to play are as important as locating Beatrix Potter's farm. While reading this book I felt as if I were on a vacation with some very good friends. I loved this book.

A classic book on England & children's literature
I would recommend this book to anyone- as a read-aloud, a travel book, or just something to read to yourself. Mrs. Bodger & her family truly loved English lit., and her love for it shines through. In this book you will discover Narnia, Beatrix Potter's country, Kipling's "Puck of Pook's Hill" ( a delightful look at old England) and many other such treasures. Mrs. Bodger's writing style is clear, her family wonderful- and the subject, English children's literature- will always be fantastic.

not what i had hoped for
I really loved the JLA as a kid and looked forward to sharing it with my son. This trade really disappointed me and on re-reading has disappointed me more.
Story lines: I guess they have run out of acceptable opponents--maybe cause they made the heroes so powerful. One story they confront 5th dimensional beings, in another, 6th dimensional beings. What's next 7th dimension?
Art work: Fancy colors but look at the characters: they are all standing around in muscle poses, hands on hips or arms crossed. The action seems cardboard. Those poses are fine for cover art but should't they look like they are doing things?

I just think things in comics have gone down hill--I will get my son as many reprints from the 50s and 60s and let him appreciate the genre as I have.

Some highs and lows
This graphic novels comprises three or so stories from the JLA. A couple are good and a couple seem to be written high on drugs. Grant Morrison is one of the most inconsistent writers. I don't know why he's praised so much. One of the highs for me was bringing in the living members of the JSA. It's great to see the old Flash, etc. back in action. And seeing Captain Marvel (Shazzam) and Superman battling each other was also a great moment. Too many of the stories don't coincide well. (Some of the action takes place during the "Batman: No Man's Land" era.)And some are there just to setup later stories. Overall, although a mixed bag... it was an entertaining read.

JLA Reborn For An Old Timey JLA Reader
As an old timey comic reader who followed the JLA in the sixties, this book was a revelation. The artwork is detailed and dynamic, with some of the best coloring work I have ever seen! The stories are a notch above the original JLA stuff and except for the Shaggy Man concept are very engrossing. Bringing in the JSA was a nice touch. It is still my favorite super hero team with their neurosis and bickering thrown into the mix. At the end of the book, a reader can feel they got great bang for the buck. It really whets the appetite for the other TPB's in the series.

A good start but not deep enough
When I read a book with 'Mastering' in the title I expect something that gets down and dirty -- you know -- DEEP. This book doesn't do that.

Although it would be a great book if I were completely new to NT Workstation, I've been using it for several years and I had already picked up 90+% of the contents of this book through osmosis.

I felt the early chapters on the apps bundled with NT (such as wordpad and pbrush) were a total waste of time. The book is over 1000 pages long and I can write all the new/useful stuff I learned from it on one page.

This is not 'Mastering' so much as simply 'Basics'.

Everything you want to know... all jumbled up
This is a thorough treatment on NT Workstation 4.0. No doubt about it, it's all here. My criticism is the structure of the book, not it's content so my gripe is with the editors not the writer.

This is the book for you.
Well there is not much to say, except that this is the book for you for mastering Windows NT Workstation 4.0. Whether you want to know NT just to know it, or put it to work for you for your MCSE core requirements. This book was highly recommended by all of my peers who were studying for there MCSE certification.

not bad but not good
It's not a bad book but it's too specific for my tastes. I prefer Michael LEvine's Guerilla PR Wired, which is a fantastic marketing book that has something for everyone. I'd suggest this book before everything else.

I never give 5 stars unless its perfect, but its darn good
People that gave this book low ratings probably wrote competiting books. Because there was mixed reviews, I didn't buy it online, instead I went to the store to see the whole thing. Within two minutes of looking at it, I was sold.
I'm an newly appointed advertising sales manager who went to one trade show and saw I needed help. So I bought this book. That was just 4 hours ago, and I already have 4 pages of ideas that I know will help me make a lot more $$$$$$.
I'm just writing this review so you don't get skeptical like I did. Its not filled with useless stuff to add pages. Its pretty good stuff that a relative newcomer to the game will find VERY useful. Hot Shots that know everything already and write bad reviews shouldn't be buying books like this anyway. right?

It's got something for everybody!
Whether you're a big business or just starting, when you first pick up this book, you'll find plenty of ideas that you can use immediately to make a real difference at your next trade show.

And like most books that you read, not every idea will work for you. Yet you'll get enough ideas in the first several dozen pages to pay for this book 100 times over. Read the whole book and you'll pay for it more than 1,000 times over. It paid like that for me!

Best of all, the ideas are practical. While the authors suggest where to look for resources, they do so without being commercial.

I've bought nearly every trade show book printed, including all those available on Amazon. Guerrilla Trade Show Selling is the only one that I refer to before every show.

Get it. Read it. Use it. Profit from it.

Wait until your child is 5 or 6 years old
My 4-year old son was far less interested in the stories than the pictures (which are great and very detailed). However, the lessons emphasize good manners (waiting until your turn to speak, talking with your mouth full), although some are probably a bit lost on a 4-year old (i.e. how to answer the telephone politely, introducing your friend to your family memebers). I'm not overly impressed with this book in general.

Very worthwhile
Illustrations are gorgeous. Quiz-format lets a child confirm what he or she has learned -- a uniquely positive way to reinforce good manners. Humor makes this fun. Looking for the letters in the pictures makes this even more interactive and draws you into the pictures. The text is a little challenging to read aloud, but enjoyed by children nonetheless, and outweighed by all the positives. My children have enjoyed this immensely. Vocabulary and concepts seem best for children over 4 years old.

It's a Spoon, Not a Shovel
This book provided my son's preschool class with laughter and excitement. They were glued to me as I read this to the class. My children want it read to them all the time. My five year old loves to read it by himself and that is something he is really proud of, as well as I am.

Keys to Self-Transcendence, Finding the God Within (Los Teachings of Jesus, Vol 2, No 3*&4)

If you like this cult I got a bridge to sell ya!
I agree with Jason, I was hoping for more secret information from Jesus but, the Prophets just ramble on about the Great White Brotherhood and the 7 who transended. More myth and yarn spinning if you ask me. I had to put the book down half way through and look for something more interesting and more intellectual. You would think that the Prophets would, by now, be able to publish a book with good grammer. Be prepared for run on sentences and a number of mis-spellings.

I Liked the Title....
First I'll just say that I've only read about half way through the book. Maybe the second half was better, but you'll have to take that chance. When writing about such a controversial topic, I'd expect the author to fill the book with historical evidence of his postulates. The Prophets give a brief introduction to some of the sources they draw from, but from there they seem to expect you to take on faith every word they say. I expected a rather intellectual reading describing interesting findings on a topic that should be nothing but interesting. Instead, I went through every ambiguous sentence trying to pull the personal thoughts of the authors from the historical evidence they claim to have. There's no definite doctrine, it's just filled with vague ideas. If anyone wants to refute my argument, I'd be happy to hear it. I'd like a fresh view on this book.

the lost teachings of jesus
This book changed my life. For serious seekers of truth, the lost teachings awakens ones soul, there is no doubting the sincerity of Elizabeth and Mark. I can honestly say that after years of searching I found this book (which bypasses the fanatacism and dogma of religious doctrine) to go straight to the source of spiritual reconnection. My searching was elevated 100 percent and I have never looked back. I can only speak for myself ofcourse.Individuals who are perhaps ensconsed in dogma seem to react negatively.Serious seekers and lovers of truth however will find it a welcome joy and maybe even a way home.

Very Disappointed
The blurbs for this book are very misleading. It is a text for beginning investors. Each chapter starts with a quote from Twain, but it has little else to do with him. The entire references to Twain probably don't exceed 5 pages of text. If you are interested in Mark Twain - forget it. Not much here. If you are interested in basic investing principles - likewise forget it - I have seen much better.

More Twain, Less Leckey
I was hoping this book would be more Twain and less Leckey. I was disappointed. Each chapter starts with one quote from Twain, and Leckey provides some background context. That's about 10% of the book. The other 90% is Investing 101 stuff.

A lighthearted investment primer
The author intertwines Mark Twains' insight, humor, and timeless wisdom with the current investment landscape. This is a good, yet basic primer for someone wanting to understand investment opportunities and pitfalls available today. It provides perspective on speculative opportunities, scams, and solid investments, choices that have been available to the novice and savvy investor alike since Twains' time.

The book contains 49 easily digestible chapters including: "The Law of Averages Eventually Makes You Right", "He Who Hesitates Can Save a Lot More" "Mutual Fund Expenses Can Hoodwink You" "Every Period in History Had It's Fools Gold", all applicable to today's investor.

There are many similar books on the market offering the same or similar advice. If you enjoy Mark Twain, and prefer your investment reading to be sprinkled with his perspective, buy this one, otherwise keep looking, you'll find another equally good book that provides the basics.

Ouch.
To begin, I loved THE PURIFICATION CEREMONY. The taut suspense, muscular, adrenalized prose and delicious blend of action/mysticism were a wonderful surprise, and on finishing it I immediately hunted down a used copy of GHOST DANCE. Yikes. To paraphrase the previous reviewer, I can't believe this is the work of the same author. Sullivan once again walks into action/mysticism territory, only to immediately fall flat on his face, break his nose and then proceed to stumble blindly for several hundred pages.

I can't recall the last book I read where the writing was this awkward and forced. Everything from the name of the heroine (full name: Andromeda Nightengale... yeah, that just flows off the tongue) on forward seems the product of a writer trying desperately to replicate a successful formula without the benefit of real inspiration or, for that matter, an interesting story to tell. "Hmmm... what should I do next. I know: CIA assassins! No, no, wait -- I'll have my protagonists stumble into a cave and find some valuable piece of evidence... again. Or I could just give them another feverish, mystical vision. Nobody's tried that before!"

Why did I actually finish this book? I had 4 hours to kill on a plane, and it was either this or try to lipread "Gosford Park." I'm not sure I made the right decision. THE PURIFICATION CEREMONY was good enough to make me curious about Mr. Sullivan's future efforts, but GHOST DANCE is about as painful a mis-step as you'll ever encounter in print.

it's a page turner!
This was an excellent book - I read it from cover to cover without putting it down!

Loved it!
