Nigey ain't a guy
Although I have not read this work yet, having only read "Being Frank" by Nigey Lennon, which was a breeze read and quite fun, due in equal parts to what she went through as well as how she put it into words... I just wanted to comment that even though a purple sock-centered sexual relationship with Frank Zappa is no firm indication either way, Nigey is chromosomally confined to a biological committment to "catch" and not "pitch" in a strict reproductive sense... which is to say she is a "she" and not a "he" as the previous reviewer of her work on Sam Clemens has alluded.

A Well-Written Eye-Opener of a Book
This is the most accessible of the books currently available on dangers to health of a high salt/sodium diet. Given that almost all of us eat this type of diet, this is also (to use a well-worn cliche) one of those books "everyone should read," and not just those who have high blood pressure. It is also one of those books I'm sure the food processing conglomerates and the salt industry would like to see out of print as soon as possible (note that it actually is out of print at this time, but I certainly hope a 2nd printing will be available soon).

A nut-shell description of the book is that:
(1) dietary salt/sodium in high amounts combined with dietary potassium in low amounts will, over time, gradually contribute to the onset of a number of diseases (heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, stomach cancer, osteoporosis, hypertension, and asthma)
(2) most people don't have a clue how much salt/sodium they're actually eating because roughly 80% of it is "hidden" in processed foods
(3) changing diet by decreasing salt/sodium (particularly processed foods) while increasing potassium (particularly fruits & vegetables) is an effective (and the safest) way to lower blood pressure and protect against the onset of these diseases

After reading this book, I immediately felt more optimistic about my health and my ability to control it. I also have a keener sense of what foods are surprisingly high in salt/sodium and are contributing to the western world's epidemic of obesity, high blood pressure, and disease. The authors' advice is compelling and difficult to refute. They build their case on the basis of studies published in reputable medical journals such as the Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine. In particular, they suggest that one of the best ways to prevent and even reverse these diseases is to reduce salt/sodium in our diets while increasing the amount of natural foods we eat. I particularly like the idea that it's not necessary to go "cold turkey" on salt. Instead, some salt/sodium can be eaten BUT it must be balanced with potassium-rich foods. There are also tips and advice about smoothly adapting to a lower salt/sodium diet. By following them, I have lowered my blood pressure significantly, and have more energy than I've had in years, and an increased feeling of well-being. I had a physical exam last week and my doctor was VERY impressed with my health. A final comment is that you may want to get more than one copy of this book because, like me, you may find yourself wanting to give it to family and close friends. I've had 3 copies and have given all mine away. If you're serious about improving and preserving your health in a drug-free way, this is the book for you.

A Bright New Star for the New Century
An uncompromising masterwork of free verse, uncompromising with any abridgement or oppression of the totality of human experience. Gestalt in its vision, modernistic in its themes, dreamlike in its contours, SALVAGED has the stuff of greatness. What could, in some manner, be called 'maximalist' poetry, it reads like a text written on the warm sea of life itself. Take a deep breath and plunge into it; it will thaw your dot-com frozen blood.

Welcome to the Real...
Fabulously funny - Tomokato and Shiro take on the mob, Nazis, and even Stalin. Of course, that simplifies it a bit, but that's the gist of things. Too too funny - especially the part with Santa and his elves (one named Schwarzenegger), and the joke about the German plane that gets Shiro's mouth washed out with soap (you have to read it, sorry!). I found the ending particularly uplifting, which is not necessarily usual for Mark E. What always gets me are the little tiny hidden things in the pictures - little cameos, funny inscriptions, etc. Look carefully - the funniest bits are sometimes not in the text! You gotta get it if you love Tomokato and Shiro as a team!!!

Sand Children
This reassuring story shows a father and son camping at the beach. They make several sand sculptures, the most unusual of which is a giant. A roving gang of children comes along and destroys all the sculptures but the giant. The boy wakes in the night and finds the giant building sand children and a sand castle. Upon waking in the morning, the boy finds nothing left but the giant. The soft colors of the illustrations evoke twilight, that half-state between wakefulness and dreaming. A gentle tribute to the power of imagination.

Brilliant Watercolor Flowers in an Address Book
If you tend to misplace address books this is one to break the pattern. The brilliant pictorial cover of bright red roses will be an asset to any desk and its size makes it unlikely to get lost amongst your stationery. Its spiral binding is enhanced by a red cloth back cover which extends to enclose the spirals. Sara Steele is best known for her very original posters and calendars. Unlike calendars which are often tossed out at the end of the year, the address book provides a more permanent presentation of her work. There are 20 large letter tabs and on each one is a gorgeous floral print. This makes a lovely gift-- perhaps for yourself.
