Finally a full-length collection
Finally, a collection of Mark Todd's poetry has been published! I first read his works in the classic collection of Colorado western slope poetry titled "Geography of Hope." Ever since, I have hoped for a full-length collection. It has finally arrived and what a collection it is. Todd lives among the incomparable landscape of the Colorado Rockies near Gunnison, Colorado. He writes in a manner that chronicles and respects the geographical region while at the same time his verse is so powerful that he transcends region and speaks to the heart regardless of where you live. His pose "The Doyleville Schoolhouse" is one of my favorites. His reminiscences of the old schoolhouse and it's importance to the farmers and ranchers is a reminder that "Some traditions run deeper than concrete." In fact, "the where can sometimes tell us who we are." The poem titled "Passages" will give the reader a flavor for his observations of the land he calls home: "These back-road passages still guide the lost wanderers, No matter the distance of the journey called home." The book contains forty-one poems dealing with the weather, friends, animals, family, tragedy, humor, the land and a host of other subjects related to "...the country here-abouts..." that portrays the reality of a landscape that will speak to the reader where ever they reside. Wallace Stegner said "No place is a place until it has had a poet." With this publication of Wire Song the western slope of Colorado, indeed the entire state, has a first rate poet. Conundrum Press continues their high standards with this book.

Imaginary travels
Astounding, awesome, fantastic, incredible... there are only some of the adjectives that occurs to you while you see this book. Ruth Thorne-Thomsen is without doubt one of the best contemporary photographers, her imaginary landscapes don't have equal. If you like the millenarian ruins... imaginary landscapes... the disturbing beauty... the dreamed photographies...this is your book.

Again, one of the best photographers of the history. Few photographers can make feel the some Ruth makes you feel. An incomparable photographer. An incomparable book

A must read for anyone who is interested in the war on drugs
From what seems like real damger in the begining while acting like a low life junkie ends up later looking like childs play. Later Mr. Bartone goes deep undercover and goes on to con and collect several thousand dollars in cash and drugs from key members of the Cali Cartel. Even though the situations that Speziale gets himself into are very dangerous you often find yourself laughing because he always finds a way to pin the drug bust on someone other than himself and even having the nerve to ask for retribution for his losses. Along the way he meets up with and learns from an interesting character named Paul Lir Alaxander who is a mysterious as he is savy when it comes to understanding the drug business. The book reads like a novel but the story is anything but fiction. If anyone takes the time to read this book it will be one of thier best reads ever.

seldom seen
Seldom does one get such a close-up glimpse at the true horrors and tragedies on the battlefields of the American Civil War, or to stare into the faces of those whose lives were entertwined with the making of America's history. But D. Mark Katz gives us that opportunity with Witness To An Era: The Life and Photographs of Alexander Gardner, published by Rutledge Hill Press. Though many of the images that have become instantly recognizable to students of history are often credited to the well known photographer, Matthew Brady, Witness To An Era sets the record straight with meticulously documented research, enabling future generations to appreciate Gardner's work. For the first time in print, Katz brings the reader not only the vast collection of Gardner's photographs, many of which he was able to reproduce directly from the original prints, but the intriguing story of Gardner himself and his eventful career during and after the Civil War.

As one of the most photographed of historical figures as President Abraham Lincoln was, none managed to capture the inner man as Gardner did. But with over 277 pages containing photos of people, places, illustrations and letters, it is difficult for one to say which is the most extraordinary in capturing a moment --a moment frozen in time for eternity, for those to gaze upon and ponder its significance in how we became to be today... from what was yesterday.

Booklist remarks, "This album of Gardner's work is nothing less than sensational," and Civil War Web agrees. No Civil War library would be complete without these magnificent photographs of America's most epic saga.

Wolf Den
The story is very fast-paced, with rich characters, lots of history, vilence, sex, and bloodletting. The evil werewolves are trying to take over the world without killing off all the humans. They need the humans for their food. The hero, Caleb, is dedicated to stopping them. The ending is one of the most violent, bloodiest things I've ever read, and there's plenty of gruesome gore and kinky sex stuff along the way, too. While it is probably too intense for the squeamish, for readers who like hardcore horror, this is the book to buy.

Women and Jesus in Mark: A Japanese Feminist Perspective (Bible & Liberation)
Published in Paperback by Orbis Books (March, 1994)
Authors: Hisako Kinukawa and Letty M. Russell
Amazon base price: $18.00

Interesting Approach
By studying Mark through the light of two little-used lenses (namely, feminist criticism and a Japanese perspective) the author is able to find some startling insights into this gospel. She shines brightest when comparing Mark's social background to Japanese society. Here she is able to relate to a patriarchal culture in a way that most Westerners cannot.

Beautiful prints, fascinating essays
It is difficult to find an art book that perfectly balances information and art; but Swinton has compiled a book which achieves this balance beautifully. Not only does the reader enjoy large, beautiful color prints of the floating world, but she also is presented with several entertaining and thoughtful essays that begin to demystify the world of the Japanese pleasure quarters. The essays deal with such subjects as the history of Kabuki theater, the life of geisha, and the function of the pleasure quarters in Japanese society. However, the art is not dealt with as mere illustration; the works are analyzed in terms of technique and art history, and the prints are catalogued with extreme care for the art scholar. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in art, Japanese culture, history, or women's studies.
