Must View!
Lenny is a... man and an absolute rock star. Mark Seligar captures Lenny in a way that makes him compelling and makes you feel like you know him just a little bit. The picture of him and his father and what he says is something that I'll always remember. However, if you are not a die hard Lenny fan you will still enjoy the pictures but you will probably not want to own the book. I loved it and then gave it to a good friend who loved it even more.

Nice Coffee Table Book
I bought this book for my wife for XMas partly because we're both big Lenny fans, but mostly because she has a crush on the guy.

Lenny Kravitz could be one of the few celebrities/artists with an ego big enough to publish a book of photographs of himself, but who cares? There are some touching photos of him with daughter and a really great series of Lenny making silly faces. I knew my wife would love it, but I didn't expect to hear her shriek as she thumbed through it and came across the almost full frontal nudity in one photograph. I should have looked at the book myself before buying it, but I doubt it would have changed my mind about getting it for her.

They shared a singular conviction to write
"How can you print a piece of your own soul," Dickinson, p. 51

This is the 2nd in the Krull and Hewitt's "Lives of ..." series. The book contains 19 chapters on 20 writers in birth order: Murasaki Shikibu (973?-1025?), Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616), William Shakespeare (1564-1616), Jane Austen (1775-1817), Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875), Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), Charles Dickens (1812-1870), Charlotte & Emily Bronte (1816-1855 & 1818-1848), Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888), Mark Twain (1835-1910), Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924), Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894), Jack London (1876-1916), Carl Sandburg (1878-1967), E. B. White (1899-1985), Zora Neale Hurston (1901?-1960), Langston Hughes (1902-1967), Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904-1991)

This is a perfect book for young adolescents and pre-teens who as they grow and mature frequently feel awkward. Krull introduces us to the idiosyncrasies of the literary. Some of the authors were loners, eccentric, a wee bit peculiar. Michael Jackson's behaviors might seem normal when held in comparison. Some retreated into themselves. Some sought out adventures. Some as adults were unsuccessful at the ordinary.

Some worked at a young age to support the family. Some took daily walks, very long daily walks. Some were not healthy and therefore wrote in bed. There were some similarities and some differences, but they all shared a singular conviction to write and write they each did well.

Hewitt's delightful portraits of the writers are precious. My favorite portrait is of Frances Hodgson Burnett of "The Secret Garden" fame. Her hat is the secret garden.

Given the high price of the book, I was surprised that Krull did not include a list of the authors' books and/or poems and the publication years. END

Lives of the Writers is a fun, informative book....
This book is a fun and informative book. The pictures are filled with humorous meanings and hidden information. The book keeps the reader's attention by keeping the included information short and simple, but also makes sure that the reader gets as much possible about the author. This book is great for kids and students to use as a report source as it is filled with great information. Kids would rather use this book as an information source rather than an encylopedia since the information is easy to understand. Authors in there are some you may not know, ( Murasaki Shikibu) and some well know ones ( Charles Dickens). I am glad I purchsed this book. I really liked the pictures which are so vibrant with color. This would make a great buy.

Indespensible for Melbourne.
I spent several months In Melbourne the second half of 1999. It proved worth its price alone for the detailed maps which I studied constantly my first weeks there to figure out Lonsdale Street from Bourke Street and which tram goes where. It covers the high lights of everything to see and do in this wonderous city in a very compact size. While the Lonely Planet guide to Australia is useful as well, this is a must have if you plan to spent any amount of time in Melbourne. Looking back now, I wish I had taken the time to visit more of the suggested places in this guidebook.

Great book for great city
This pocket sized book followed me everywhere when I enjoyed Melbourne and its surroundings for a couple of months of 1999. The extensive map section helps you navigate without problems. Its restaurant guide is excellent, the prices and the foods are exactly as described. If you are a student or budget traveller you will find your money back with this book in no time. All events (Melbourne has got heaps of that! ) are listed with tips and details, accurate and witty. Also, you find everything you need to get to Anglesea, Torquay and Phillip Island for the surf or for the splendid nature. It's got the lots for Melbourne - simply go there with it and enjoy!

Incredibly helpful
The fancy of going to Vienna next summer crossed my mind more than once so I decided to pick this up just to get some more information on the City of Music. It's a very concise book that can be easily toted around in a bag or pocket, which I immediately liked because should I go I would want to keep it on hand. I liked the layout for places to stay, going from campgrounds to hostels, to the hotels, going from one star to five. It has a great listing for restaurants and has the city pretty much covered in respects to places to visit and a calendar of events, which makes planning a trip a lot easier. The history was a nice added bonus for someone not knowing about the city, as well as historical people that spent time/grew up in Vienna (ie: Mozart). Colour photos and things such as political mindset, attitude towards children, the legal system are nice touches as well. However, take the prices with a grain of salt, especially with the new introduction of the Euro.

A handy guide to more than just the tourist sites
The 2nd edition of Lonely Planet's guide to Vienna is a welcome edition to the guidebooks on the Austrian capital. Of course it contains the usual information: how to get there, how to get around, and what there is to see. But this book also tells the reader about other important facts such as the climate, history, government/politics, bicycling, and farily current email and web addresses. The Lonely Planet guide also has lots of interesting tidbits of information that most of the more staid guides do not, such as info on Lauda Air, gay Vienna, The Third Man (movie), and Viennese actionism. The maps are excellent, and prices (as of 1998) are listed for most attractions. I doubt that a more versatile guide exists.

Great For ALL Couples
This book is amazing.. I did some of the games with my fiancee and we both got to know each other much better than we had before. It deepened our relationship and helped us to talk about ideas we had not felt comftrable with before. I recommend it for all stages of relationships.

Fantasy and Play for Relationships
My husband and I loved this book. By bringing fantasy and play to the world of relationships, author Mark Robert Waldman successfully combines psychology and sensuality in Love Games. Exercises drawn from diverse experts, including Harville Hendrix and the Dalai Lama, can be done alone, with a friend, or with a lover. Sometimes therapeutic, sometimes childlike and playful, Waldman's book shows how to discover more about yourself and your partner, improve communication and fan the flames of romance. My favorites: "Treasure Hunt" - Tuck a heartfelt love note under a jar of pickles, in a box of cereal, or between the bedsheets; create a "Couple's Journal"; make a "Pleasure List" of your most pleasurable memories; and "Two Thumbs Up,"in which you and your partner engage in a scene where the characters are, well, your thumbs.

A great "first" baseball book for children.
"The Mac Attack: The Road To 62 And Beyond" chronicles Mark McGwire's record breaking season. Included are interesting stories, stats, and trivia about the 1998 season, as well as facts about his entire baseball career (including college, minor league and olympic team), his childhood, and his family. It's not just a book about McGwire, as other interesting and pertinent major league facts are included. It even includes an exceptional section on Androstenedione, in a way any eight year-old can understand (even if they can't spell it!). "The Mac Attack: The Road To 62 And Beyond" is a great book for parents to read with their children, and a great "first" baseball book. The only disappointment is that the publisher chose to sacrifice accuracy of some statistics in order to get the book quickly to market. In listing other unanimous selections for Rookie of the Year, "The Mac Attack: The Road To 62 And Beyond" lists Orlando Cepeda as a Cardinal instead of a SF Giant, Vince Coleman as a Met instead of a St. Louis Cardinal, and Derek Jeter as a MET instead of a Yankee. It then completely forgets Nomar Garciaparra of the Red Sox and Scott Rolen of the Phillies, last years' unanimous picks. It also lists Bobby Richardson as the man who hit the "shot heard 'round the world" (hopefully Grandpa will tell them that it was really Bobby Thomson), and forgets that Hank Aaron played his final year in 1976 for the Milwaukee Brewers and not the Atlanta Braves. Other than the few boo boos, "The Mac Attack: The Road To 62 And Beyond" is a great choice for every little leaguer's book collection.

Full of fun facts!
Sports fans will have a good time with this book! How did they find all those tidbits to put in here? The sports trivia experts in my family are already fighting over who looks at the book next. Fear not, baseball fans -- until baseball season is back in full swing, you've got this book and the one about Sammy Sosa to keep you company during the cold winter months.

I found this book an inspiration and true-to-life.
If you are a "Little House on the Prairie" fan, this book, based on a true story, is for you. The story follows a Native American woman's life as she survives tragedy and ultimately triumphs. I'm not usually much of a reader, (in fact this was an assignment) but I just couldn't put it down! The author did an excellent job capturing the reality of the Native American way, and depicting the main character's struggle with TB; the isolation, loss of friends and her own illness. This book really makes you appreciate your health and everything you have.

Mark St. Pierre has put together a book deserving of fame!!!
Being a fanatic of Native American writings and lore I find again Mark St. Pierre, top of the list. I understand he has lived in the Lokata nation for the last thirty years and writes from the heart. Follow this writer because he is destined for fame. No writer has captured this beautiful culture with more passion than he has. I look foward to his next work.

The Boonies Are Us
As a writer and aspiring writer, I've read them all, but never have I encountered such a complete, no-nonsense, nuts-and-bolts guide to magazine writing. If you have it in your library, I really don't think you need another. It's all here, and very practical--with the added bonus of getting two writer's thoughts for the price of one. If you have any hope of selling professionally, you'll find all the tools you need inside. It's also very Canadian, great for us, not quite so great for U.S. folk. The techniques, however, are sound for anyone, anywhere.

One of the best guides to freelance writing
Zuehlke and Donnelly have put together a book which tells readers how to be successful as freelance writers. Full of illustrative ancedotes and practical tips, this book lets you believe you can write well and sell well too. The "boonies" refers to any area outside of a major publishing centre. Soemtimes it feels like knocking on doors is all you will do as a freelancer. Zuehlke and Donnelly show you how to get those doors to open.

Black humor at it's best!
One of my favorite all time books. The only reason I don't give it a five star is that it's not for the vast mjority of readers. It's about and exrtemely insular and bizarre group of bricklayers living in an isolated town in England. Brilliant dark humor to the very end.

Not Graham Greene
About twenty years ago I read this at a library. I had never read ANYTHING like it! Great, weird socio/political/ religious cult of mad brick layers. I went to visit my English Prof. uncle for a week, and wondered if he knew of any other McShane books. I think he was a little too "high brow" for this book, he lent me a Graham Greene whom I fell in love with and read extensively. Am now a writer myself, and have to say that in their own way McShane and Greene are equals, just VERY different. McShane does not follow a sane course in telling the tale of a madman, but it is a lot of fun. I also was impressed, shocked and a little offended at the time as to how crude the story got in places, so if you have a sheltered teenager, this amy not be the next book after Animal Farm, though it has some very Orwellian moments.

Outrageous vehicles race across the world to a big finish
Imaginative vehicles of every type race across the world in this simple, rhyming story. They manage to cross the pyramids, jungles, Australian outback, and even the Great Wall of china only to be foiled right before the finish line. Children will love the vivid, outlandish illustrations and especially enjoy the double fold-out page that occurs just before the finish. My 3-year-old son could not be separated from this book for weeks.

Great book for the littlest car lovers
My 2 year old son and I found this book at the library and renewed it and renewed it for almost 3 months! He loved it! A few weeks ago I found it on the library's "used book" sale and snatched it up--I thought he might have grown weary of the book but it only cost .75. He still loves it! He looks at it every day--several times a day and then we read it before naptime and bedtime. A definite read for your young car lovers. Lots of funky cars in different environments having great adventures. Opportunity to teach continuity, observation skills, etc....plus it's lots of fun. They should definitely print this book again.
