H E A R T B R E A K I N G !
Beulah Land is the bloated Gone With The Wind rip-off that Lonnie Coleman is known for; but if you have never heard of/read this book, you are missing out on the one of those surprising, rare treasures in popular fiction. This fictional memoir bravely, sweetly goes to unexpected places, and tears your heart out in the process. I read and re-read this book many, many times, and each time felt those hot tears on my face in the final pages. You will love these characters, the evocative places/times; it has that quality Main Street does in Disney World, except you lose a bit of your innocence along the way. Growing up in wartime, and harboring personal secrets, makes up the mainframe of this story, and it is absolute insanity that this beautiful, simple book has been out of print for nearly two decades. Try it; you will not regret it.

Inspiring
I lost a lot of sleep with this book because I couldn't put it down. I was constantly looking at the clock saying, "Just a half hour more." Ellen Gunderson Traylor has a way of taking a person from the Bible and bring them into your home. I could see the scenes in my mind, that is how good the writing is. I was inspired by this book. She brought to me the story of Mark, cousin of one the beginning giants of the Church, and helped me to see that it could be my story. I went back to the Bible and read again the part in Acts about Mark leaving Paul & Barnabas, Paul & Barnabas going seperate ways because of it, and then, in his 2nd letter to Timothy, Paul asking for Mark to come to him because he is a comfort to Paul. If God can work in his life, Mrs. Traylor helped me to see that He could and wants to work in my life. Mark is a novel that kept me turning pages. After reading so many of her works, I have faith in her faithfulness to the Scriptures. She is also faithful to the cultures of the characters she writes about. Many times I have come across references in her books that have been verified by other resources. The same is true of Mark. Get this book and sit back and let her tell you an amazing story. I think that you will be inspired by it like I was.

Mark 947: A Life Shaped by God, Gender and Force of Will
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (December, 2002)
Author: Calpernia Sarah Addams
Amazon base price: $15.95
Average review score:

A poignant view of a fascinating life
As a transsexual woman, Calpernia Addams has walked an incredible path. Aside from her strict Fundamentalist upbringing, she was dragged into a national spotlight after her boyfriend was murdered in a 1999 "gay" bashing on an Army base. Such is the range of experience so touchingly recounted in Calpernia's autobiography Mark 947.

In the bible the book of Mark, chapter 9, verse 47 begins with "And if thine eye offends thee, pluck it out," a dramatic metaphor for the sex change that she'd wanted for many years. The title of this work is a jab at the biblical scripture she was bombarded with from early childhood. To escape this strict world, and her own inexplicaple feelings, Calpernia ran away to join the Navy, ending up in Desert Storm. Later, on a lonely outpost on an Aleutian island, she becomes increasingly aware she does not fit in as a guy.

The remainder of the story details an ongoing awakening into her sexuality and gender, from her first steps in "drag" to her crowning as Tennessee's Entertainer of the Year. Sweetly yet tragically, these pages introduce and then all too quickly take away the love of her life, Army PFC Barry Winchell who loved her as his girlfriend. The final chapters vividly portray her anguish, the dazed nightmare of the murder trial, and her beginning steps into acceptance.

This is an amazing and touching first book, one that I would recommend to anybody.

This is not a review, it is a question.
I have an old book by Mark Catesby. Half is in French and half in English, it is supposed to one of two volumes, it is not in very good shape, and most of the plates are missing. Do you have any thing more you could tell me about this book?

A superb profile of an amazing artist
Mark Dion is one of those creative people, be they artists, scientists, scholars, cryptozoologists, inventors, novelists, or whomever/whatever, who hit up against the rigid parameters of where they find their work landing - then goes beyond. This book, in photographs and text, defines for those only now beginning to be aware of Dion's efforts, a sense of the who and what of this man. To get a wonderful peek inside the mind of a genius, obtain this book. - Loren Coleman

WWII Viewed From the Foxhole
I appreciated this book in part because my father was one of the contributors. More than that, however, I appreciate the commitment to paper a record of individual soldiers' experiences and feelings from being in the midst of battle. Many histories describe the grand strategies and ideals for which WWII was fought. This anthology captures how that conflict affected "average men" before that experience is lost forever through their eventual deaths. This book is a "must read" for anyone interested in history!

Another Classic Mark Hampton Book
For those of us who love the wonderful watercolors of the late Mark Hampton, this book is essential. The watercolors in this book are of a very personal nature, whether interiors, architectural, or otherwise. I am pleased to own this book, and I will enjoy it as I do with the other two Mark Hampton books. Note that the price is somewhat steep (...), but given the way the other two books sell on the resale market for many times their list price, a good investment.
