The Charge: Why the Light Brigade Was Lost

Not Romantic History, Real History
The Charge is the story of Balaclava as a military historian tells it. This is a breath of fresh air, as most books are written by literary people, who, while they do a great job of telling the story, don't give "the reason why." This book does that, and more. Instead of writing off the tragedy to the errors of Lucan and Cardigan, like Woodham-Smith, he lays the blame at the feet of Lord Raglan, and his aide Captain Nolan. It also bares some of the myths of the charge, giving casualty figures that, when compared to say Pickett's Charge, seem remarkably mild. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in the Crimean War, or the British army.

In-depth Account of the Charge of the Light Brigade
I don't think that I could really add much to the previous excellent reviews on this interesting account of the Charge of the Light Brigade. The author, Mark Adkin, has produced an excellent account of the Charge of the Light Brigade, which occurred on the 25th of October 1854 during the siege of Sebastopol. Utilising his in-depth research to provide answers to how, why and who, the narrative takes you along with the cavalrymen on their charge into the Russian gun positions. The book has a number of detailed drawings, maps, and photographs to assist you on this reckless advance into the mouth of the guns. The book is very readable and I think that the author attempts to answer the question 'who' was to blame quite fairly and without malice. Overall a very good read for the student of military history or for anyone who just enjoys a good story.

A tip for readers of this book, a new release might be of interest: 'CRIMEA: The Great Crimean War 1854-1856' by Trevor Royle.

This is How Military History Should Be Written
This is the kind of book that shows how military history should be written. Although the maps and battle sketches are crude they are very effective in making Adkin's case. This is a careful military analysis of the Light Brigade's charge in October 1854, during the Crimean War, with the emphasis on untangling the hows and whys surrounding the mangled orders process that resulted in the charge. The usual culprit, the Cavalry Division commander Lord Lucan, is partly exonerated and receives only mild criticism. The primary culprits in Adkin's view are Lord Raglan and his ADC Captain Nolan. Adkin believes Nolan may have deliberately indicated the incorrect objective. Also interesting is the dissection of the actual charge, such as how many rounds were fired at the brigade and how the casualties were not as spectacular as is often claimed. It is interesting to note how incompetent the British chain of command appears next to the "amateur" generalship displayed seven years later in the American Civil War; even a Mclellan appears preferable to an (...) like Cardigan, the Light Brigade commander. The only omissions in this otherwise fine book: what kind of casualties did the Russian artillery battery suffer? What happened to the Light Brigade survivors in the brutal winter that followed?

For friend or reluctant newcomer
Whether you are an expert in dealing with computers, or a reluctant newcomer who has been dragged kicking and screaming into the computer age, you are bound to relate to many of these short stories. Computer Legends, Lies and Lore runs the gambit from reality based computer incidents into the realm of science fiction. A variety of ideas and writing styles makes this a good choice for relaxing summer reading.

Enjoy Yourself!
A friend of mine gave me a copy of this gem of a book, probably because I spend so much time on the computer and on occasion have complained of its exasperating characteristics. I was pleased to notice that the 350 pages consisted of 37 short vignettes which I could read in any order. I began it on a school pick-up line waiting for my granddaughter. I began with the shortest one and proceeded from there.

Since I am secretary of a very large computer user's group, I knew, of course, that everyone who uses a computer for anything experiences the same frustrations as I do. But reading the humor these writers put into their descriptions was wonderful. I had lots of laughs reading it and realized the next time I experience some of the annoyances that go along with computer use, I should try to think up a funny way of telling someone else about them.

Even if you only have a very limited knowledge of computers, or no knowledge at all but live or work with someone who does, you will have to have a smile on your face while reading it.

great therapy
IF COMPUTER LANGUAGE MAKES YOU UNSURE OF YOUR INTELLIGENCE, AND YOU THROW YOUR HANDS UP IN DISGUST. GET A COPY OF "COMPUTER LEGENDS, LIES AND LORE". YOU WILL STEP IN TO A WORLD OF AUTHORS WHO HELP YOU LAUGH AT YOURSELF. IT IS GREAT THERAPY.

Hogwash or Blind
This book really annoyed me. There were some fascinating things in it it has to be said, but the effort of ploughing through the authors laborious prose was a major downer. The dogmatic way certain things were phrased annoyed me intensely. To be sure the author is very learned in arcane subjects, how much grounding he or the poeple he or his teachers had in reality is questionable. Had the author outlined at the start the nature of his contacts and the framework within which his path was set, it would be easier to assess. In effect this book is a ramble through mark Hedsels life and esoteric career in part, a discourse on various subjects and a few speculations. I certainly would be very interested in meeting any of his teachers if they ever read this. Mark Hedsel struck me as naive in the extreme, a true Fool (which is the point of his book) careering through life. If you expect this book and him to make sense you will be very disapointed, read it with an attitude of reverence and gaeity and you may experience something of what it is to be the fool, I think that is what he was aiming for. It is not a logical discussion, a treatise, or a realistic tale of someones life.

Wonderful
An amazing book giving a few, no make that many secrets away of the ancient mystery schools which have survived to this day. Mainly with a Gurdjieff flavour with a few astrological, Rosicrucian and ancient history references.

This is a slow burning type of book where the student has to search for the meaning behind Hedsel's veiled secrets. True Esotericism at its best to guide the seeker onward. Much like Fulcanelli, Hedsel and Ovason's secrets are only really available to those with eyes to see.

The Bibliographic notes meticulously compiled by David Ovason run into 103 (Yes that's 103) pages and are worth the price of the book alone. They act as a signpost for the initiate who is seeking further answers pointing to a mixture of some rather obscure and common texts.

There is a website dedicated to the book which I have published on the web. Just type "Hedsel" and "Zelator" on Google to find it.

Highly recommended.

A Glimpse through the Veil
Without this book, I would still be asleep.
"The Zelator" will prove to be an insightful and inspiring read for all newcomers to Hermetic philosophy, and the occult in general.
I agree that some of the information contained is not wholly accurate, but the serious student will find that further exploration of the various concepts contained will clarify any errors or misunderstandings.
Ovason's footnotes, although extensive and fairly well informed, do tend to dwell on unimportant aspects of the subjects covered by Hedsel. The variety of arcane subjects dealt with and explained by Hedsel will provide a basic grounding in hermetic studies for any new student.
There are also moments when Hedsel explains events in his life in relation to various alchemical operations. At times these insights into his personal life are touching and often moving.
This book sets out to tell the story of one man's personal journey through initiation, it does not claim to be an instruction manual for magical works. It explores areas of occult study which would not be discussed so openly elsewhere and, for this alone, it deserves the respect of the reader.
An excellent book.

Corporate Portals and eBusiness Integration
Published in Digital by McGraw-Hill ()
Author: Mark M. Davydov
Amazon base price: $34.95
Average review score:

Review by a senior software architect.
This book is overwritten and filled with jargon and acronyms. By acronyms, I don't mean commonly used ones like ERP, CRM, B2B, B2E, and B2C but rather ones like EEP, EMP, BIP, BCE, UIP, EAI, PCSB, A2A ODS, KRC, EII, EBSTA, VE, DW, CPF, TPRC, MTDCAA ... I could go on (and on). If you enjoy reading acronyms and hopelessly convoluted, pompous, rambling, unfocused prose, then look no further and buy this book. Otherwise, at least preview it before ordering.

The narrative is very abstract and non-specific. There are no concrete examples or business cases. The author makes many generalizations about technology and business without backing them up. Portals are not even discussed until a quarter of the way in -- before that there is a seeming endless primer on e-business. Obvious and widely accepted facts are presented and repeated many times. Everything is repeated many times.

The author suggests that this book might be suitable for a Masters-level student. I'll give him that it reads like a textbook, but that doesn't HIDE the fact there is very little information here and what is here is nearly inaccessible due to the style of writing.

I finished this book because I though that it would get better at some point. It didn't. I've read hundreds of computer-related titles about software architecture, development methodologies, programming, and technology in general, and this is in the bottom 10%.

An opinion of Chief Enterprise Architect
There's plenty of hype, and lots of information, but no common understanding - even now in December of 2002 - as to what constitutes a corporate portal, most importantly, from a technology perspective. After reading this book, I strongly feel it does shed some light. It helped me to understand that the label "portal," as broadly applied, has two levels of meanings-one specific (application oriented) and one conceptual (architecture oriented), and that focusing on the conceptual meaning is very important to get enterprise integration efforts under control. The #1 book ("MUST READ") for a serious architect!!!

The reality check
Davydov's book is exactly what our application development organization needed to ramp up its portal strategy. This book is a voice talking beyond the "silver-bullet" hype of all kinds of Internet technologies to the bigger picture. I'a a seasoned software engineer and project manager, and this book helped me to get a firm grasp on the problem/opportunity/goal before jumping down to the details.

Insightful!
This book describes the application and growth, in U.S. corporations, of multi-source employee assessment. This is a review of the strengths and weaknesses of the ¡°360¢ª Feedback¡± program created by the authors, Mark R. Edwards and Ann J. Ewen. Their book gives you enough information to evaluate multi-source employee assessments. However, if you are reading it because you expect to be able to implement a 360¢ª feedback process without hiring the authors, you will be disappointed. It seems to be written from the consultant's perspective, which is selling consulting services. This limitation should not discourage you from reading this book, if you have a genuine interest in implementing multi-source employee assessment or if it is something your company may need. While the book is not for the causal reader, it is important for anyone in a Fortune 1000 company who functions as a change agent. We at getAbstract.com recommend this book to any manager who might be interested in implementing such an employee review process.

360 Feedback Feedback
This book provides the practical advice for building 360 systems. It is less academic and more informative than the other books available on the subject.

Not worth it...
I seriously question the quality of the tapes. I purchased my tapes, and found that there are different kind of strange noise in the recording... The courses of the tape also, I would say, pretty disorganized. Do not think that you can reach upper intermediate level of French after finishing these tapes. I think that the tapes are not as seriously made as other language learning audiocourses.

For better tapes, I recommend "Learn in the car: French" series. The quality is clearly much better. It is cheaper too. If you do not care to spend lots of money, I recommend "Pimsleur" series. Pimsleur is by far the best, and it is extremely user-friendly.

In a nutshell, I found many audiocourses better than "AudioFluency French".

Better Than Pimsleur By Far
Having tried Pimsleur's expensive French courses and returned them, I was fortunate to come across Audio Fluency French.
The difference between the two is simple. Language Dynamics Audio Fluency French really works. It is a simple, down to earth way to speak a lot of French easily. It is also quite reasonably priced.
Pimsleur on the other hand is 'Academia's' love child. It is perfect for the pinhead geek intellectual who loves academic 'fads' over solid
methodology and who doesn't mind paying an arm and a leg for it.
Stick with Language Dynamics. You'll be glad you did.

Loved the Book and Tapes
Audio Fluency French did for me what no other course has been able to do which is 'Get me speaking and understanding basic French'. When you consider the price of a live Berlitz course or travel to study in France or even a university class, this course is a real bargain.
I especially enjoyed having French and English on the tapes
(this is essential) and having the handy manual which gave me immediate references for all pages.

Great for the married couple
I really didn't know what sort of theme this book would have. Turns out it was pretty much a diary of the "first married couple" It would be a good book for a first anniversary gift. It's not bad, definitely well written. It wouldn't be offensive to anyone who actually read it.

difference between a man and woman
It's impressive how well Mark Twain describes difference between a man and woman. It's sometimes funny and often sentimental to love....

a gift for honeymooners
This abridged version has been a very good gift for newly married couples who would like something short and sentimental and a little thought-provoking to read while honeymooning. It provides the literary and emotional essentials of the longer edition. The editing, while at times abrupt, is smooth enough to make the story easy to follow.

This little book manages to evoke more passionate emotions, word for word, than anything else you'll find. You'll be confused, frustrated, awed, elated, broken, and hopeful as Adam and Eve (and Twain) pull you into their thoughts and interpretations of life. This is a great little valentine for your sweetheart or yourself, and has been appreciated by each of the several couples to whom I've given it, and treasured by some. One couple read it to one another as they drove across the country on their honeymoon. Another read it on a sunny tropical beach.

I recommend this version over the unabridged version for most gift recipients, as it's more likely to be read completely. ...And if you buy this wonderful book for wonderful friends, you don't want them to miss the end!

Beware of superficially educated......
Joe Ross is by far and without any doubt best writer on financial matters. "Harold Robins" or "Konsalik" of financial markets. You have to love your first book from him. However, that's it!
What you are going to buy is very well written, expensive book about trading. Nothing more. Mr. Ross is repeating "his own" trading proposals (e.g. Ross hook) in each of his books. Of course he is a writer, not a trader! ...
"His" buying technics are well known history. After many centuries of trading game Mr. Ross gave his name to the oldest bull and bear rule - breakouts of higher top and higher bottom & lower bottom and lower top - "Ross hook". Wow, what a discovery, what an innovation!
Mr. Ross has many problems with exit points (sell first red candle or higher open or just later.....).
This book is full of worthless trading advices with some useful hints which you can find free of charge on Internet.
For a beginner in trading is Mr. Ross extremely dangerous writer because well explained nonsense has more creditibility than badly written truth.... My advice is better than those from Mr. Ross:
Be very careful and do your own research!
Never trade other people's system without your own verification!
Last not least, save your money on this book ...

good but not great
I found the book to have a lot of interesting topics, but hard to understand and put together for a person new to trading. I could not understand if I should use all the trading methods or just select the ones I felt comfortable with. It was better than I and II, but hard as I said to put it all together. I love the works of Joe Ross as I feel he is the only way one can have a chance to make money.

Worth every cent ! Very Impressed!
I am a position and day trader and found their books very practical albeit time consuming to digest. I have read TNT I, II & III. In my opinion, TNT III is the best. In fact, I found the explanation of their technical analysis concepts clearer in the third volume especially on the 1-2-3 highs and lows and Ross Hooks. I had to read this book at least 3 times because the concepts are difficult to grasp but if you are willing to put the time and effort in, you will learn how to identify a trend and also how a stock behaves in a trend or in congestion based on their price bar activity. This book also includes how to use common indicators like Bollinger Bands, Stochastics and CCI specifically with the 1-2-3 highs/lows and Ross Hooks which you will not find in other books. They also describe various entry and exit techniques based on their concepts and how these can minimise the risk with certain trades. As a result, I have actually made money using their techniques alone and combined with classical technical analysis it provides that added advantage over the average trader. My only criticism of their books is that they do not use examples of actual stocks/commodities when illustrating their points. Despite this, I am looking forward to purchasing volume IV, the final in their series. PS. If you want to save money, give volume I a miss and buy volume III instead.

Heard it all before (Better)
As a rule, folk rock records are crummy generic ditties with nothing to recommend them. The formulaic jangling guitars and meaningless lyrics have a lame, dated feel. But the stories behind the folk rockers could have been interesting in the right hands. Unfortunately 'Turn! Turn! Turn!' is devoid of any new or real content. Okay-to-cruddy interviews (= filler) masquerade as research. The constant harping on Bob Dylan and the Byrds gets downright irritating.

Folk-Rock Fans, Beware!
As a huge Byrds fan, I was really looking forward to this book. I wanted to read about the excitement of 1965, when the opening jingle jangle of Roger McGuinn's twelve string guitar in Mr. Tambourine Man announced an entirely brand new style of music. Instead, what I got was 300 booring pages that seemed like 3000. What a disappointment! Turn! Turn! Turn! reads like a hardware catalog. The material is often booring, repetitive, or unnecessary. The author manages to include every obscure recording artist, record label, and producer of the early folk-rock genre, many, more than once or twice. Great. Ho-hum. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. What he doesn't do is re-capture the magic of the moment. Reading this book felt like a prison sentence. DO NOT buy this book, folk-rock fans. Hey, you don't find this review helpful? Good! Buy the book and waste your ...time and money.

A Page Turn, Turn, Turner
I love music but some books about music are better left unread. Some pop music aficinados are best advised to go back and just listen to the music as a few attempts to give a literary voice to the spirit of the sound can strike a dull and pedantic note. Not so with this book. I found myself often unable to put it away as the author packed each chapter with so many historical notes that I was not aware of; clearly he did his homework. Much of his information came straight from the source, the writers, musicians, producers, and other insiders who were the leading lights and inspiration of that musical genre known as folk-rock. Of course, if one is not a fan of this type of music (and I am)you may not be engaged by Joe Unterberger's writing. However, as someone who was entranced by the Lovin' Spoonful and the Byrds, I consumed Mr. Unterberger's book with great zeal. I think musicians will find his work especially appealing as Unterberger gives careful attention to the creative side of the artists featured in his book. But if you are like me, someone who merely loves to sing along with the marvelous tunes of the gifted artists who gave voice to folk-rock, you may enjoy reading about the historical aspects of the music that, to paraphrase John Sebastian, is magical and can set you free.
