Lots of promise, little content
I was excited to finally find a book which really addresses the gaping holes of NT-out-of-the-box-security especially in an Internet environment. I pitty the company who's NT sysadmin has to read this book to get up to scratch. There's nothing in this book you can't find on the net in much more detail. Edwards has a very pleasant writing style, but to really cover this topic his book would need 5000 pages.

Good read for medium security networks
I read a lot of hype surrounding this book prior to its release. I was really looking forward to reading it and to answering most of my remaining NT questions as was promised on the web page. I got the book when it first came out and I have had it over a year now.

The book has solid basic information but does not convey the detail that was promised. NT has some real problem areas; some of these were not addressed. Making excessively positive comments in NT's regard (when they are frequently unwarranted) makes it *appear* as though Mr. Edwards hopes to ingratiate himself to Microsoft, thereby eliciting their support. However, it does little to win the respect of those who will ultimately rely on his work: his readers. We all know that there are problems in this OS and chatting it up while ignoring specific problem areas communicates (albeit unintentionally) a lack of concern for the integrity of security, its most essential building block.

It has been said that this book contains nothing that cannot be found, readily, in any number of places but the truth is, few technical books do. The job of the author is to compile that information and make it useable and relevant. This book's saving grace is that the information is all in one place and easy to access. I think it is a solid read for medium risk networks.

Again though, it does not contain the depth of information that is necessary to adequately maintain the integrity of a corporate network requiring maximum security (though few will use NT for this mission anyway). It has most of the components but does not paint the full picture.

Mr. Edwards gets to a subject of particular interest and you are expecting him to expand on it and enlighten you then suddenly you get a couple of references and are told to go elsewhere, or worse, he just stops. It may be okay to take this approach in HOWTOs and cribs, etc. but at $50.00 a pop, people want more...and they deserve more.

I appreciated the pointers and I think I learned much by tracking down the answers to my remaining questions but I bought this book as a productivity tool, and it was billed to be the ideal reference. I still had much additional research to complete, after reading it several times, which was not addressed or referred to in the book. The book did not save me as much time as it could have and should have.

Mark is clearly a knowledgeable individual. If you have followed his work at all, you know this. He has carved a niche for himself on the web and in other places. I have a lot of respect for most of his work, including this book.

However, I hope he will take another crack at this one and create a work that focuses on Maximum Security, addresses all of the necessary issues and is worthy of his abilities, the picture on the front of the book and the $50.00 I paid for it.

This is the one-book answer to those trying to learn NT secu
I am not a security expert, but I find it hard to fault this book. There are simply tons of information in it. I have had a lot of fun implementing what I've read.

The best part of this book is that it shows you how to hack into your own networks. That seems to me to be the only way to really learn security.

Move over Albert Goldman
Andrew Hoffman is to Mark Twain what Albert Goldman was to Lenny Bruce, John Lennon and Elvis Presley-- which is to say a parasitical graverobber who projects his own weirdness onto his subject.

There are way too many legitimate biographies of Clemens for this book to be taken seriously.

Little New Here.
Q: If you are writing a biography of a famous author, using recycled material, what can you add to make it sell anyway? A: Claim that the author was gay! (Some people say that you could add insight, but Mr. Hoffman disagrees). Hoffman bases his assumption of homosexuality on the following "evidence": 1. Mark Twain had very close male friends. 2. Mark Twain lived with his male friends. 3. Mark Twain went on road trips with his male friends. (Fraternity brothers beware, Hoffman is coming after you next!) This is just another example of people who don't want to do their research. I'm sure Hoffman looked a lot at the life of Samuel Clemens, but it seems he didn't do his background material. Many, many people from this era are assumed gay because of the extremely affectionate letters they wrote to their same-sex friends. Guess what? That's just the way they wrote. There are better biographies out there, and they're not too hard to find.

One of the best biographies I've ever read!!
This book is captivating from cover to cover. I highly recomend it not only for the subject matter but also for serious students of social history of the 19th Century. The author really did his research.

A shameful end to an once great book
It is simply for continuity sake that this awful lot was released in paperback. One of the weakest stories in one of the weakest eras of the LSH, the authors manage to ruin the whole 30-year history for "continuity sake". Not deciding if the book should aim more mature readers (as Keith Giffen did) or infants (as Tom McCraw and Tom Peyer did), this story put an end to the first LSH saga. After this one, the book was started from scratch and any one over 13 should skip what the Legion has become. In fact, unless you do not understand what is going on currently with the book is that you may grab it. Go grab any of the Archives or better, buy older issues of the Legion of Super Heroes (before 95). You'll be pleased.

An Odd story
Story of superhero teens who live in a utopian future. Very standard comic book writing with little originally. Star Trek did it much better.

Your Mileage May Vary...
Granted - this book is not for everyone. The Legion Of Super-Heroes started out as a gimmick in the original (i.e. 50's/60's) Superboy and attained such popularity that it eventually kicked Superboy out of his own comic (twice)! Since those simpler (sigh!) times, the tales of teen-aged heroes from many exotic worlds with unique powers protecting a future United Planets has undergone many changes to keep in step with the zeitgeist. This book reprints the early stories of the latest Legion re-boot (i.e. all the stories before just didn't happen) and relaunch of the title. The difference between this change of editorial direction and previous incarnations was that the writer(s) made an attempt to rid the title of some of its darker elements and heavy tone that had invaded the title. The thought appeared to be to make the stories more light-hearted; to try to capture the youthfulness of a group of teens. Now, I'm far removed from teenagerdom, but it did strike me as successful (at least at first). I'm still fonder of the earliest version of this idea, but I'm willing to accept this as a decent if slightly underwhelming attempt to recapture the magic that was the Legion of Super-Heroes!

A book with a peculiar style
NMS Medicine is a book which has its own peculiar style that is a reflection of some of the other NMS books as well. The students have tried to master this book over the past few years because it is concise and has alot of MCQ's in the USMLE format. But now it has become very much evident that the book is not very helpful for USMLE because of unnecessary emphasis on low yield subjects and missing out on some of the high yeild material ,moreover many students find it very difficult to memorize the material presented in the book because of the one two three format which breaks the continuity of the text.

Excellent for cardilogy reveiw
If you want to do well in USMLE step 2/step3 the cardiology section of this book is your best bet,as it x-rays the very silient points you need to answer the exam test. This book is excellent overall, but may be boring to go through. Read the cardiology section and you will love yourself for taking this advise and buying the book.

#1 Med Text
I love this book. I used it in my second year for pathophys and used it again during third year. The book is very concise and easy to read. I went throught his book about a total of four times leading up to my exam and aced it. THe earlier you start using it, 2nd year, the better off you'll be.

An awful book that you should avoid!
...as someone who has spent nearly a decade in Morocco let me tell you, "don't buy this book"! It is filled with trivia and several false statements. For instance, on page 247 the author states that 'until recently, additional income was provided by a large naval and military base [Kenitra], shared with the US, but the Americans left after the Gulf War...' Well, this is absolutely not true. The Kenitra Base was closed in 1978 and the last naval activity there was the taking of the [then Port-Lyautey] airfield by US forces during Operation Torch in WWII. This, in turn, is followed by a derogatory comment about "a rather sad array of bars, pizza joints, and discos [that] struggle along in their wake" which indicates that the author of this section not only failed to research his subject...

Therefore, if the authors didn't even take the time to verify these facts then just how reliable can you expect the rest of the book to be?

Good for maps only
Photocopy the city center maps from the Rough Guide and carry the Lonely Planet Morocco. It has better listings for everything else.

Great for the armchair traveler
I am not actually planning to visit Morocco, but I like /thinking/ about visiting Morocco. I found this guide literate and insightful.

Perhaps better in print than in person
Okay, We stayed at two places last week that were listed. The first, "Inn at Lake Joseph" was fine excepting for our reservation was changed from a light second-floor place to an extremely dark first floor room, this after an emailed confirmation for the nicer room (which was over $200 a night). The second place was "The Harbour Inne and Cottage" in Mystic. Well, this Inne is on the water but right next to the sewage treatment plant and behind the train tracks. The cottage cost $250 a night and is basically an old Quonset Hut with cedar artfully applied in a hippie manner, but we all had fun anyway. It would be good for the Kathleen and Robert Fish to go wherefore they write. We stand reluctant go anywhere listed in the book without further checking.

ammenities listed not offered
While the resort we chose was lovely, the ammenities listed were not offered and never had been according to the owner. Where did they obtain their information? We love to travel with our pet. Why is it impossible to find a book written by people who have actually visited these places and have an honest opinion of them?

A wonderful, and extremely helpful book
We planned our 2,000 mile honeymoon with this book because we were picking up a puppy during the first leg of our trip. We stayed at the Stacey Mansion in Tecumseh, MI and at the Victorian Loft in Clearfield, PA. Both were wonderful stays, and welcomed our 8 week old puppy. Highly recommend this book to anyone traveling with or without a pet.

Unlike any history novel
I enjoyed reading this book for several reasons, the first being that it was easy reading. I was a junior in college and all the books that I was used to reading were in some sort of foreign language that I could not understand. Ragged Dick was a very simplistic, yet interesting book that I could not put down. The second reason that I enjoyed it was because it talked about real issues during that point in history. Ragged Dick had to struggle in order to get the things that he needed to survive, but in the end it was his manners and his personality that enabled him to prosper as much as he did. I read the book twice and it was still good to me. There are some people that believe that Alger writes about the same things over and over again (depression, poverty) but there are so many other authors that do and still get rave reviews.

ragged dick
i think everyone should read at least one horatio alger book, since he so helped shape american morals at the turn of the last century. his very name is a constant catch-all for the american rags-to-riches machine. i inherited my grandfather's set, and, even though one can call these books formulaic, moralistic rot, they capture a spirit and a time in simplistic, bold language that is readable, entertaining, and a fresh peek at cultural history through a primary source. Add to this that i am a teacher who is having my 8th grade boys read it (yes, in part for a laugh), but they are digging it. More than i could have anticipated. Read one paired with Nathaneal West's "A Cool Million," which parodies alger, for a real bully debate about americanism.

Review on Ragged Dick and Mark The Match Boy

Reviews on: Ragged Dick and Mark The Match Boy

Ragged Dick is a story about a boy going from "rags to riches". This story focuses on the life of Richard Hunter, a poor bootblack from New York City. It is a classic story about a young boy without parents who works hard and is honest. The honesty and hard work pays off for him when he does deeds for people in high places.

In Ragged Dick Richard Hunter's honesty brings out the best of people. The wealthy people give him extra attention for his deeds and notice his honesty. For example, he receives money for a shoe and cannot get change so within a few days of the business interaction, he goes to the work place of the man and gives him the change. It also represents respect for his elders.

Story number two of the series is Mark The Match Boy. This too has good morals starting from the youth. This story displays the innocence of a boy coming into the real world. Mark is a boy who is deprived of love. He has no living mother and no family. The purity, which he displays to Richard Hunter, is charming. In this story thievery motivates the conflict. The story display Mark as a by who is similar to The Catcher in The Rye as where Holden Caulfield does not let his sister be corrupted by the real world, Richard is doing this to Mark.

These two stories should be read by not only the youth, but by everyone. They focus on universal morals such as honesty and trust. I can say nothing negative about this book because it is well written, to the point, and very appealing. Not only is it motivating, but also it brings out the best in people and it could change your view on the less fortunate population.

One star too many
A "how to" book. An easy to use manual which instructs physicians in the practice of inflicting closed head injury on human beings in the name of healing. An easy users guide for psychiatrists interested in supplementing their annual income by thousands of dollars per year without spending more than a few minutes of their time per week, per patient. A lively read about the procedure still used to control "uncontrollable" patients in psychiatric facilities. Chapter after chapter of fun and vivid facts about how to use electricity to induce grand mal seizures in humans which then cause irreversible and potentially progressive dementia. Clear instructions on "how to" 'cure' depression by damaging brain cells and tissue in an attempt to erase memory, dull senses, flatten emotions, and decrease IQ level. An entertaining missive about "how to" get away with violating the fundamental ethical principle in medicine, namely, "do no harm." Clear and articulate instruction in the art of systematic violation of human rights.

Good Handbook
Book is fine. Useful. It is ashame that folks with strong false beliefs badmouth the book and ECT. They are wrong. If my choice was for ECT or for taking a bunch of pills day after day I would go for ECT. James Staudenmeier, MD, MPH (Health Services Administration)

Interested
Its amazing to me how people critque illnesses they have no idea about. Ect is a last hope procedure. It is a rough procedure but would u rather kill yourself or have this done to you. I think the ladder would be the ideal option. Depression is a disease , just like cancer just like aids, until people can distinquish this fact, depression and ect will be stigmatized by morons such as this reviewers are here. I had depression for 6 yrs and nothing has help except ECT , i strongly recommend it this book and the procedure. And clueless people that say ECT is bad ECT is horrible, it is nothing compared to the horrors of depression and living on this crappy planet. So to the ones that say ect is destroying your mind, your mind is already destroyed by depression. Ect is hope and the nay sayers just so there ignorance.

Very Strange
Strange story of the JLA fighting a race of beings who want to get to heaven, or some such junk as only DC can do it.

Too Long, Too Confusing
I had such high hopes for this one. JLA Heaven's Ladder is about the JLA stopping a dying race of aliens from destroying Earth and other planets while on their way out. The aliens see themselves as superior beings and earthlings as insignificant, the same way that we look at insects. The concepts sounds interesting, but the execution falls of the mark completely. The art is really nice and the oversized format allows it to really shine, but the plot is just too complicated and long. There are no breaks for the readers to stop at, which is also frustrating. I found myself not caring what happens about half way through and it was a struggle to complete it. For the record, let me state that Mark Waid is one of the best comic writers out there, especially for superheros (for a really good Mark Waid JLA story, check out Tower of Babel), but he loses it here.

Very impressive.
I have to take issue with those who would decry this book. I think it's truely a noteworthy addition to the JLA of today. I, for one, LOVE the depth and imagination that is going into today's comics. The Watchtower Era JLA is the pinicle of said depth. Just when I think they've pushed the philosophical and metaphysical boundaries to their limit, they push harder. This book, while not perfict (It doesn't quite fit on my shelf, for one) is a great example of the writing that has made this title what it is today. Much like The Matrix raised my expectations of special effects and Sci-Fi, so does today's JLA raise my expectations of a good comic book. Heaven's Ladder is a great book, with a lot of depth, good art work, and wonderful character interactions. This book really leaves you feeling good.

Not realistic
I am long-time Pilates practitioner and bought the book out of curiousity when I became pregnant to see if there were any different ways of doing the traditional exercises. Windsor keeps the method "traditional" to a fault. There are not enough modifications shown. Also, too many of the exercises are done lying on one's back. This is just not realistic after a certain point in pregnancy. I felt lightheaded and dizzy from lack of oxygen lying down! I would have liked to see more sidelying exercises, magic circle routines or standing exercises. The forward of the book if well written and there is no doubt that Pilates can relieve many of the discomforts associated with pregnancy. It really can keep you in shape and help you regain your body after a baby. However, this book is only suitable for an experienced practitioner who knows how to safely modify the exercises. I would never recommend it to a novice. Rather I would steer them in the direction of a good yoga for pregnancy book or video.

it's ok but not great
this book is an ok book but it takes an hour or more to do all the excrecizes. also it is seperated in to each trimester that's a good feature. but in both the second and third trimester it still has you doing excrcizes while lieing on your back. no way through each of my pregnancys my doctor has said don't lay on your back after the 1st trimester. other than that the book is good it get's you in shape and it dose help alot postpartum

I use this every day
I really like this book. I had been doing Pilates matwork for about 18 months when I became pregnant. I didn't start using the book's routines until I was about 16 weeks pregnant, because before that time my regular Stott Intermediate Matwork video routine seemed fine. I really like the second trimester routine Mari has outlined -- although I don't do the entire routine because of time -- I skip some of the side-lying work and the rowing moves. I'm now 33 weeks pregnant and still doing the second trimester routine because it still feels good (although last week I dropped a couple of the moves that were beginning to get uncomfortable). I have no problems exercising while on my back -- and I have been told that as long as I don't feel dizzy or nauseated, that exercising on my back is fine. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to try Pilates during pregnancy, especially those women who already have at least a basic understanding of the moves.
