A Father's Honest Answers About Life and Death
Revelation often has a waterfront address. Think of Thoreau, pen in hand, on the banks of Walden Pond...Leonardo da Vinci, pondering the subtle science of the River Arno...or Jesus, sharing the keys to the kingdom of God at the edge of the Sea of Galilee.
There's something ancient and elemental about being on the water, something that sets our own inner tides moving with a slow, irresistible pull. Shifted by that current, profound truth can rise from the depths of a human soul to bob up suddenly above the surface, visible to us all.
Three summers ago, nine-year-old Christopher Dugan sat in a hammock beside his father, watching afternoon come to the Maine lake where their family was vacationing.
"I'm going to die," the boy announced. "So are you."
With a touching faith and a seriousness beyond his tender years, Christopher asked his father some hard questions: What is it like when we die? Where do we go? What if there really isn't a heaven? What if it's all a lie? And, he continued, if there is nothing more after death, what's the point of anything we do here? "You're a minister," Christopher said, "so you know about these things."
Fortunately for young Christopher, and for us all, Dugan knows a great deal indeed - and he shares his insight in this remarkable first book. He chronicles a summer-long series of father-and-son conversations that allowed the pair to think and talk openly about life and death, their mutual understanding deepening as the dialogue progressed. The reader, privileged to listen in, will find wisdom and comfort here, gently interwoven with glimpses of the ever-changing lake shore.
Jeffrey Dugan is the rector of a middle-sized church in Farmington, Conn. Challenged to explain some of the toughest concepts within the ken of humankind, however, he does not preach. He concedes that intellectual knowledge of theology "does litttle or nothing for a frightened little nine-year-old asking his father for help in overcoming the fear and foreboding that everything we value most in life comes to an abrupt and empty termination with death." Instead, Dugan draws from his own well of remarkable experiences and the conclusions that resulted. In the face of Christopher's fears, this loving father offers "responses that come from the heart; person-to-person, soul-to-soul."
This is a simple book, an entertaining book, but don't let that deceive you. Its message is artfully packaged, but very powerful, and its author crafts a first-person story with the deft touch of a master.
The introduction, a 17-page account of Dugan's own path to understanding, points to the distinct likelihood that young Christopher may have inherited his tendency for truth-seeking. During his years at Dartmouth College, majoring in physical anthropology, the author was dedicated to the pursuit of scientific fact. His goal was to become a physician-astronaut specializing in space medicine.
That goal changed in the space of five minutes, on a snowy night in 1973, when Dugan glimpsed a reality that science could not explain. He refocused his keen curiosity on matters of spirituality, and set off on a new path that eventually led him back to the Christian traditions of his childhood, and to the writing of this book.
There is a special gift within these pages for those who struggle with loss and grief. Because of that, and because of the tragedies that have shaken our nation in recent weeks, it seems that Dugan's words have appeared just when they are needed most. An unexpected chain of events, including an editor who left the forgotten manuscript on his office windowsill for more than a year, resulted in the book's Oct. 1 release date.
"Christopher's Summer" has appeared just as many Americans begin to look for the deeper meaning that underlies our day-by-day existence, pondering some of the same questions that a young boy posed to his father one summer afternoon, beside a lake.

A good book
I first read this book when i was in junior high, it was well written and beautifully illustrated. It went along with a series of figurines, usually sold in the same shop. As i recall there were one or two more books in the series, but my memory eludes as to the titles. The book is a series of stories introducing the characters and places in the world of Krystonia. This would make a good children's book, especially for bedtime, none of the monsters are too terrible, having a rather, cute and cuddly pitch in the illustrations, and the evil people, are still rather funny.

This book is NOT out of print!
Churchill was published in 1988. After 10 years, and seven printings, it is still in print through the publisher, Hyperion Press. Hyperion is located in Winnipeg, Manitoba at 204 256 9204. Over 10,000 copies of Churchill have been sold - primarily through outlets in Churchill, Manitoba, Polar Bear Capital of the world. Each year, thousands of tourists flock to Churchill to see the incredible wildlife (polar bears, whales, seals, birds, caribou, more, more, more). This book outlines a year in the life of Churchill.

I was the pharmacist in Churchill from 1981 through to 1988 (best one in town - only one). During that time I decided that what was needed was a book that captures the indomitable spirit of the people of the north - a true diary of the people, the modern industry, the history, the flora and the fauna. In 1997 I focused on the photographs taking almost a roll of film each day. Total frames shot = 7,000. Total pictures in the book = 135. In 1998 I focused on writing the text for the book and finding a publisher to partner with. 20 publishers said - "It won't sell." The 21st - Hyperion said "Let's do it." The rest, as they say, is history.

Enjoy - Churchill was a work of love for me. It's one of the most fascinating places in this incredible country - Canada.

Odd Title, Great Book
Cities and People: A Social and Architectural History is not about cities throughout the world, it does not begin with the start of urbanization thousands of years ago, nor does it examine any one city from its origin to the present. Instead the book is a social-architectural history of European urbanization over the past thousand years. The last century and a half occurs in the U.S. The story never lingers long on any city, but shifts as changes in transportation, manufacturing and commerce alter the leading edge of urban development. What Cities and People does do, it does superbly well. Its large format (8x11) and glossy paper with pictures on nearly every page make this book a pleasure to read and view. The hundreds of reproductions of paintings, drawings, and maps plus numerous pictures of surviving building bring to life the story presented in the text. The focus on building and other structures is not on architecture as such, but on structures as physical manifestations of and clues to urban life, the work and leisure of people. The book enables readers to begin "seeing" the past in surviving landscape features. The author's graceful and confident writing style nicely complements the well-chosen graphics and makes this book a most informative and enjoyable read.

A book about a true psychopath...
Singer does an excellent job of portraying this madman from his beginnings here in Indianapolis as a prime suspect in the "Speedway Bombings" of the late 1970s to his accusations that he sold pot to Dan Quayle... Singer's subject is someone that you should be afraid to meet on the street and he does a great job explaining why and how...

A treasure
Because Buffalo is small and declining, it is not a common subject of local interest books (e.g. the "Insider's Guide" books that seem to cover Sun Belt cities so thoroughly). So if you are moving there or for any other reason want a sense of the city's recent history, please, please, please read this book!

It paints a picture of the paradise lost that was Buffalo in 1950, and shows a bit about how the city reached its current low level. The only thing I don't like about it is that it hasn't been updated! (Also, the author's judgment of Buffalo's school desregegation adventure is more favorable than mine would have been, but nevertheless he is reasonably fair).

The Civil War's Last Campaign: James B. Weaver, the Greenback-Labor Party & the Politics of Race & Section

Journal of American History (Sept 2002), p. 646.
"A sympathetic biographer, Lause wishes we had more politicans like James Weaver and more movements like the Greenback-Labor party of 1880. Many readers will share his enthusaiasm. Anyone interested in third parties in general and late-nineteenth-century reform politics in particular should read his book carefully."
