Beautiful Illustrations!

The text in Ragged Bear is short and simple. It is about an old bear who is played with, but is not the favorite toy. Then, being left at the park one day gives him a new lease on life with someone who rightfully gives him the same kind of love that he had always given to others. This sweet story is accompanied by beautiful watercolor illustrations that bring out the most sensitive qualities of this book. The artwork alone is worth purchasing this book if you are a teddy bear lover who appreciates fine illustrations of teddy bears, but it is also an appropriate story for the youngest teddy bear lovers.

Elvis' stepbrother tells all!

Author David Stanley tells the truelife story of growing up in Graceland.Stories range from daily life in Elvis' world, on tour with the King of rock & roll, to having the Beatles show up at the front door. Stanley leaves out nothing as he recounts Presleys downfall.This ones not just for Elvis Presley fans, as it shows the real life struggles in Stanleys personal life. An excellent read.

simple and fast way to be productive

Having read the UML books, full of special notations and characters to cover all the possible modeling combinations, it is refreshing to find in this smallish book a simple and yet productive right-to-the-matter guidance to start analyzing a business process to model in a software application.

A text on RDS

The RDS is being heavily used in Europe. The books is mostly an engineering text book. It is also readable by ordinary folks who do not have advanced degrees in Engineering. It also serves as a reference. That is the unique feature of this book. I recommend this book to any one who is involved in RDS.

It covers RDS, RDBS, Traffic Information Services, Intelligent Transport Systems and RDS-TMC, Basic and Enhanced Radio Paging, ODA, Differential GPS, etc.

A must have reference for RDS engineers. Here is a one fine book which is a source for multitude of information folks.

what you look at is what you get

Current user-computer dialogues tend to be one sided, with the bandwith from the computer to the user far greater than that from user to computer. A fast and effortles mode of communication from a user to a computer would help redress this imbalance. We therefore investigate the possibility of introducing the movements of a user`s eyes as an additional input medium. While the technology for measuring eye movements and reporting them in rreal time has been improving, what is needed is appropriate interaction techniques that incorporate eye movements into user-computer dialogue in a convenient and natural way.

a thinking woman's "myst"

I bought this cd-rom after hearing the NPR interview with the authors. i've been a lifelong fanatic of all things Las Vegas and this particular artifact is something "out there". it reads like a tabloid full of stories that may or may not have happened in Vegas and there are plenty of occasional games to keep my less-than-solid attention engaged. i especially liked how you have to pretend your gambling (by dropping coins into the slot) in order to keep reading the book. the only bad thing is that you have to resize your screen in order to play the "game" but its worth it. i'd definitely recommend it for anyone who's interested in las vegas for more than a weekend of delirius gambling.

The Reinvention of Politics: Rethinking Modernity in the Global Social Order

Postmodernity? Not yet

In this book, Beck offers us an interesting alternative to typlical postmodern thought and theory. He elaborates on Giddens' concept of «reflexive modernity», treating it as the state of flux in which we presently live. This transitional phase between industrial modernity and the next modernity is marked by the radicalization of modernity, the integration of risk into the social "order" as well as the fall of the welfare state and the uncertainty that follows it. Beck also analyses social and political tendencies angainst reflexive modernity as well as its effects on the political systems in the western world.

Beck's analysis is, for the most part, clear and consise, save for chapter 4 where he examines possible outcomes for the next modernity (a little to philosophical for my taste). The remainng chapters define reflexive modernity (chap. 1), counter-modernization (chap. 2), sub-politics (chap. 3) and the effects of reflexive modernization on the (western) political system (chap. 5). The book ends on another (overly) philosophical examination of the role of doubt.

challenging tradition

Mark Neufeld has written a much needed counter to the positivist-dominated subject of international relations theory. Furthermore, in outlining an interpretavist approach (in particular inspired by the work of Charles Taylor), he has developed a sophisticated alternative to mainstream methodology. This book thus serves as critique and stepping stone, and should be read by those interested in meta-theoretical issues and in the possibility and potential of critical IR theory.
