great refresher
I don't know why more people don't use this book or the authors' more advanced version, "Quantum Mechanics in Chemistry", but I think they are both fantastic. This book in particular is very clearly written with explicit examples and and relevant end-of-chapter exercises...with detailed solutions to the odds (very rare)! It focuses more on on many-electron problems and methods, which is essential for understanding chemical problems. If your an undrgraduate chemistry major or a beginning graduate student in chemistry who needs a refresher before taking a more advanced class, you would be well served by this book.

If you need to learn IP addressing this may be the book.
I have taught Network+, A+, CCNA and CIW for the past four years and in each of those classes there is sections in IP addressing What I should have had was this book to teach from. The author certainly has done his homework

The book starts with basic binary conversion which is essentials to understand when working with IP addressing. You then work with classfull addressing and fixed subnet masks. The author also explains the drawbacks to this type of addressing, which is usually skipped over in most texts.

The discussion on VLSM is both in the positives of use as well as the negatives. Form the there the author gives and excellent breakdown of CIDR and supernetting and NAT. What I think could be added to the next edition is more practice examples. Overall this would make a nice addition to the CCNA Preparation library.

Penn & Miyake: a match made in heaven
Irving Penn has, for decades, been one of the most remarkable fashion photographers, submitting clothes to his own crystal aesthetic in ways that bring their most interesting details to light. He is the perfect man to photograph the work of Issey Miyake, whose clothes demand an inventive and piercing eye to capture their astonishing detail and structure on film. This book, collecting dozens of Penn's photographs of Miyake clothes, spanning from the early 80s until now, shows that when Penn photographs Miyake's clothes, it is truly a collaboration (although Miyake is never present at the shoots and Penn has never been to a Miyake show), and the resulting photos are more perfect for the cooperation.

Ishiwara Kanji and Japan's Confrontation With the West
Published in Textbook Binding by Princeton Univ Pr (March, 1975)

Difficult but neccesary reading
This is a very difficult book. Not that the writer couldn't write: it is well written. But the subject is very complicated. Ishiwara's thoughts about a confrontation between empires are for modern men not easy to understand. Just like the impact of these ideas on the Japanese military. His handeling in Manchuria according to these ideas brought him fame. But in later times the young officers rebuked him, because he wouldn't allow them the same freedom of action he himself took in 1931. Peattie tells the story of his life and thinking in a very well manner. But you have to know a lot about Japan during the wars to understand his writings completely. A fine book for lovers of Japanese history.

Islam in Java: Normative Piety and Mysticism in the Sultanate of Yogyakarta (The Association for Asian Studies Monograph, No 45)
Published in Hardcover by Assn for Asian Studies (September, 1989)
Author: Mark R. Woodward

Average review score:

Javanese Islam in Focus
Since Clifford Geertz's classical study of Javanese religion and cultural life (1960), this is probably the best book written on the subject. As the author himself says in the "Acknowledgments," although he has his disagreements with Geert's analysis of Javanese Islam, Geertz's "Religion of Java" was one of the few books that helped him in his research.

As Geertz did in the late 1950s, Woodward too divides the Javanese religious landscape into certain groups or variants, but along rather different lines. Woodward suggests the division between "normative Islam" and "Islam Jawa" (Javanese Islam). The normative Muslims can according to Woodward be divided into kaum muda, the "young group" influenced by the Middle Eastern reformist movements, and kaum tua, the "old group" who participates in the ritual and mystical aspects of Islam Jawa. In Woodward's view, the Islamic law (shari'ah) together with the Qur'an and the hadith form the core of normative Islam in Java, while the adherents of Islam Jawa confine themselves to perform certain life crisis rituals in accordance with the shari'ah while saying that other aspects of this law-centered piety are optional. Both normative Islam and Islam Jawa are in Woodward's view purely Islamic traditions, and this together with his observance that these categories often fade into each other and incorporate space for personal and regional variation are his major contributions to the study of religion in Java. As he says: "Islam is the predominant force in the religious beliefs and rites of central Javanese, and... it shapes the character of social interaction and daily life in all segments of Javanese society."

Woodward's approach to Javanese religion is very appealing; he compares his ethnographic data with the Islamic textual tradition as well as with ethnographic reports from other parts of the Muslim world. By doing this he sees that the Javanese Islam not is permeated with pre-Islamic customs and beliefs; on the contrary he sees that the Javanese religion is a purely Islamic one. His knowledge about the Qur'an and the hadith makes it possible for him to find that Javanese religious practices and beliefs are firmly grounded in a textual Islamic tradition. Woodward's contribution to the study of Javanese religion is extremely valuable. Not only does he show that Javanese religiosity is firmly grounded in an Islamic tradition, but he also situates the Javanese Islam in a wider Islamic perspective, i.e., he shows that Javanese Islam has an important place in the Muslim world.

This book should be of definite interest for students of Javanse/Indonesian religious and cultural life, but also for students and scholars of Islamic civilization, and even for anthropologists.

sadness spoken from the walls
This is a collection of poetry salvaged from the walls of the barracks on Angel Island, where Chinese immigrants were detained between 1910 and 1940. Poems are in both English and Chinese. In addition to the poems, the editors provide an introduction to early Chinese immigration, and there are several pages of quotes from various immigrants, on various subjects such as the voyage to America and their impressions of Westerners. The poetry speaks for itself -- poems of desperation, despair, homesickness, and anger. This is a wonderful collection.
