This Book Should Be Better
I'm not sure what to make of this little book. It is certainly printed well, a requirement for an art book. The closeups of the Murano glass are beautiful. I wish the smaller photographs of the same glass objects in the back of the book were bigger. I got no real impression as to what the glass actually looked like. There must be bigger, more comprehensive books on Murano glass, if you cannot take a trip to the J. Paul Getty Museum, where these treasures are, or in the best of all possible worlds, go to Venice and Murano and see glass until you cannot look at another object.

The poem "Murano" though beautiful is not my favorite Doty poem. Written for his deceased poet friend Lynda Hull, the poem contrasts the permanence of Murano glass with the stench and death often associated with Venice. "Is this what becomes of art, the hard-won permanence outside of time? A struck match-head of a city, ungodly lonely in its patina of fumes and ash? Gorgeous scrap heap where no one lives, or hardly anyone."

There is no need to combine pictures and poetry. One usually dominates the other. First class poetry does not need to be illustrated. (I certainly think Mr. Doty is a first class poet; his poems often bring me much pleasure. I'm also of the opinion that poetry should be read, rather than explicated. The good poet always says what we cannot explain very well.) Fine art does not require commentary. Books like this are difficult to pull off and seldom satisfy completely. This one is no exception.

A Treasure Trove of Glass and Words
I believe that Mark Doty is one of the world's best poets, and have bought most of his books and memoirs. I bought this for my former wife as a birthday gift. She is not a poetry fan, but loves this book. She keeps it on the table in her waitng room with some other reading materials and tells me she has had eight or ten patients ask where they could buy the book. A treaure trove of stunning photographs and words side by side. Being a published poet, I would call Doty's words beautiful musings on the island of Murano, glassmaking and life. A little gem!

Radiology residents needed a book like this.
If you like the Requisites series of texts, this book is for you. Let's face it, the average radiology resident can't wade through Stoller or Berquist and expect to remember much. This book takes musculoskeletal MR and breaks it down into a Requisites-format book of manageable length. Boxes indicating "key points" abound, and the pictures are of high quality. The length is appropriate for an introductory MSK MR rotation.

On the minus side, the book is definitely not an exhaustive reference text. The knee chapter is relatively short, especially given the huge volumes of knee MRs radiologists are seeing. Also, the authors are a bit too opinionated about which sequences to use in some chapters - a more evidence-based and less anecdotal approach to tailoring exams would have been more useful.

Overall, highly recommended for radiology residents who are encountering MSK MR for the first time.

The missing link
This is a very good text especially for the cost.

True to the authors intentions, the text presents practical aspects of interpreting musculoskeletal magnetic resonance studies. The text is perfectly suited to radiology residents, fellows and radiologists interpreting routine mri's. Essential technical information including suggestions for protocols are provided as well as an organized approach to interpretation.

I liked the sequence of normal descriptions immediately followed by associated pathology. There were sufficient images of excellent quality. Illustrations and diagrams are well thought out and "boxes" with core information are also present for those of us who just want the essential list! Definitely an easily read text. One should realize that this, however, is not a reference text! A musculoskeletal radiologist or individual with special interest in this area will likely find this too superficial. But the authors intentions are not to replace Resnick or Stoller's excellent reference texts.

Bottom line is I definitely recommend it for the price because it fills the gap between an intro book and the heavy duty texts just as it intends to...it is the missing link.

a really thoughtful read
I really enjoyed this book, and found myself returning to it whenever I could sneak some time in over the weekend. The message is simple, and poignant in light of the life of Mark Phillips. I have already passed it on to a male friend that I think would really appreciate this book in relation to his father and his son, and I have several others I will continue to pass it on to. It is good enough to recommend, and is a great gift for men who enjoy hunting and the outdoors.

Very Good. I enjoyed it!
I just finished this book last night and enjoyed every word. I am glad I did not read the above review first, though, since it gives away most of the drama. The book shows, in essence, that there is drama in all of our lives, and this one was very well written. In the search for "heroes" you hear about these days, there is surely one in Mr. Phillips' father, just a good American that did his blue-collar job despite mind-numbing conditions and, later, enormous pain. If you like this book, and the memoir genre, try also Rick Bragg, All Over But The Shoutin'.

Good models, but ...
Well, this is a really tough one to rate: The models warrant 5 stars, while the presentation is more like 1 star... I've ended up giving it 3 stars because the models are really more important to me - even if I have to muddle through the diagrams for a long time.

Here's what to expect before you try tracking this book down: First off, DON'T get this book if you're a beginner or if you're buying for a beginner! Anyone who's not a pretty advanced folder will only end up thoroughly frustrated, no matter how much he or she likes the topic of the book. That's not so much because of the complexity of the models (although some of them are definitely at a high-intermediate level) but because of the diagrams. Errors and inaccuracies abound, sometimes even stumping the most experienced of folders. On top of that, the photos are mostly pretty horrible, so much so that I've heard from others who haven't been inspired to fold from this book at all. And that's really too bad! The 15 models included are very nice, it's just hard to actually complete them using the diagrams provided... Just to give you a taste of the quality of the models: Among the authors who have contributed their models are Robert Lang, Gabriel Alvarez (featuring a great Daedalus!), Neal Elias, Robert Neal and Marc Kirschenbaum.

So, if you're an advanced folder, by all means, try to track down a copy of this small book, but be prepared to be frustrated by the diagrams nonetheless. Otherwise, I'm sorry to say you'll be better off with a different book (say by John Montroll or Robert Lang).

Excellent origami book about mythical beings
I kike this book very much. You can find in this books almost the most famous mythical beings. Althought the diagrams are not very clear, I think we can manage them. The models are excellent. they look lively and wonderfull. I especailly like the Cerberus, Pegasus and Shiva. These models are best folded ever. Have this books!

Not bad, not bad. Drags a bit and romance doesn't go anywhere but not bad.

The Making of the Legendary Nick the Greek!!!
One of the best historical novels ever written. Thankfully, it's now back in print. You'll see the early adventures of how Nick became who he was and a legend in the 20th Century gambling world. A must read!!!

This book was perfect, but more 64 games came the next week
It is a good codebook but should have codes for future releases also.If youare going to buy a code book, buy vol.3.

This book gave me everything I needed to know (for now.....)
I liked the book, it was informative, but 5 new N64 games are coming out every month; this book wouldn't be neccesarry unless you're only going to buy one or more of those specific games.

Relates metrics to quality
Defines a set of 39 metrics classified into 9 project metrics and 30 design metrics. The author explains how design metrics can be used to detect quality problems and offers recommended thresholds. Advice is provided on how to correct problems with the design and source code. A project experience database displays metrics for real projects in Smalltalk and C++. The book is relatively short at 146 pages.

The metrics covered in the text are number of scenario scripts, number of key classes, number of support classes, average number of support classes per key class, number of subsystems, average person-days per class, average number of classes per developer, number of major iterations, number of contracts completed, number of message sends, number of statements, lines of code, average method size, method complexity, number of public instance methods in a class, number of instance methods in a class, average number of instance methods per class, number of instance variables in a class, average number of instance variables per class, number of class methods in a class, number of class variables in a class, class hierarchy nesting level, number of abstract classes, use of multiple inheritance, number of methods overridden by a subclass, number of methods inherited by a subclass, number of methods added by a subclass, class cohesion, global usage, average number of parameters per method, use of friend functions, percentage function-oriented code, average number of comment lines per method, average number of commented methods, number of problem reports per class or contract, class coupling, number of times a class is reused, and number of classes/methods thrown away.

pragmatic, real-world metrics
I liked the book's pragmatic approach to metrics. The author
presents a set of simple, code-based metrics and suggests what they may mean. There is an emphasis on finding your own way, using the book as a starting point. The book includes a "project experience database" that gives the reader an idea of what can be expected.

The book's approach is a lot less intense compared to other metrics books like those written by Capers Jones. The focus is much more on measuring object-oriented aspects of the code rather than on measuring the functionality as with Function Points.

Well written for intended audience
This book is "highly readable" as stated in the editorial review. That means the reader shouldn't expect to look up a lot of hard words. It has lots of color photographs and the occasional diagram. It's well written.

Although this isn't clearly stated in the editorial review, don't miss the reading level. The CIPS data correctly categorizes this title as "Epidemiology -- Juvenile literature."

Well written for intended audience
This book is "highly readable" as stated in the editorial review. That means the reader shouldn't expect to look up a lot of hard words. I think it would be terrific for a high school or precocious junior high school student who was interested in medicine and learning more about epidemiology. It has lots of color photographs and the occasional diagram. It's well written.

Although this isn't clearly stated in the editorial review, the CIPS data correctly categorizes this title as "Epidemiology -- Juvenile literature."

Here's a sample paragraph: A virus is the simplest and smallest of life forms. It is a protein shell enclosed in a core of nucleic acid. (Nucleic acid such as RNA and DNA are the molecules in a cell that carry heriditary information and direct the cell's activity.) There are more than 1,400 known viruses. They have many shapes but most are round, or cylindrical.

Somewhat dry and without ANY illustrations
The book was somewhat disappointing.

At first hundreds of pages of dry text, and then no illustrations. Not inspiring. Though might be an "excellent reference", it still remains dry...

I am positive that some illustrations and photographs would keep my attention for longer.

Excellent Reference
While not as large and sometimes not as detailed as Ralph Mayer's excellent book on all artist's materials, the Gottsegen often offers a more recent explanation of materials and techniques for painters specifically. One of its most useful elements is a series of step-by-step instructions for various processes, including stretching canvas, making mediums, etc. When researching information on painting topics, this book serves as an excellent source which I would not want to be without.

Includes classic stories for your seder table
Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel tells tales, his wife provides translations, and Dr Podwal includes his magical drawings. Wiesel's commentaries are printed in red (for example, for the Four Sons, he comments on the idea of Four Generations and the transmittal of heritage from knowing (wise) to not-knowing(cant even ask the question)). The classic Hebrew and English text of the traditional haggadah are in black ink. The Haggadah is in Right to Left format. While in English and Hebrew, there are no transliterations.
