Epicurus the Sage: The Many Loves of Zeus
Published in Paperback by Diamond Comic Dist. Star Sys. (January, 1991)
Authors: William Messner-Loebs, Mark Nevelow, and Sam Kieth
Amazon base price: $9.95
Collectible price: $15.88
Average review score:

Good art, great story.
For those of you unsure who William Messner-Loebs is, he's the guy who wrote all that swell dialogue for the first few years of Kieth's inexplicably non-award-winning series THE MAXX (no, I did not misspell "Kieth"). I originally hunted down and bought EPICURUS for Sam's art, but the writing threatened to overshadow the art at times... which is not to say that the art is sub-par, but rather that the story, although a tad uneven, is almost funny and engaging enough to make one forget how good the art is. Political satire tends to age quickly, but EPICURUS THE SAGE is one of those works that manages to remain timeless by not getting overly topical.

It Fits My Bill
This booklet published before Eric Clapton released Pilgrim. It serves the purpose of outling each of Eric Clapton's songs and a summary of their recordings. A very detailed description of each track is given. I especially enoy the descriptions of Eric's guitar styles on many of the songs. Helpful for those debating whether to purchase a particular recording. Yes, there are some slight biases. However, the author does not make his opinion too overbearing. And besides most of his thoughts are pretty compatible with mine. A nice pocket size booklet for Eric Clapton fans.

It's pretty good.
EfR is pretty entertaining, and I guess fast-paced, but I think Alaire got away pretty easily in this story. And I'm disappointed that our one and only Dark Elf Bard wasn't in the story. But it's still great, and I recommend it for everyone.

befriending the seasons in the modern world
Along with Shiki and Santoka, Yamaguchi is a great haiku poet of the 20th century, and certainly the greatest living practitioner of this form which lasts for no more than the length of a single breath.

Universally recognized in his country, his haiku appear both in the ephemeral medium of morning newspapers and in inscriptions on black stones scattered throughout the islands of Japan. With many volumes in print, this is the definitive English language collection, carefully translated by Kodaira and Marks -- themselves accomplished poets.

Presented in Japanese and English, with the Japanese text in both Kanji/Kana and Romanji, and with the poet's notes for each haiku intact, there is no better introduction to modern haiku for English language readers.

Yamaguchi's haiku are modern in that they incorporate a great number of references to human affairs, sometimes omitting 'kigo' or season words, but are always rooted in the season and in nature -- even if that nature is influenced by human habitation:

Mysterious ground -
the ground I watch in the night
of a night ballgame

Good book. Lots of humer and spleen.
I really liked this book. It contains Wolverine issues 24 through 47 and a lot of heart. Like the first Essential Wolverine, it really showcases Wolverine's personality. This book made me laugh and got my blood flowing. No Wolverine fan should be without it.

Extremely valuable for the technically oriented.
This book is an excellent resource, particularly for those with technical orientations in math and science. It requires a basic understanding of physics and calculus, and an understanding of some recording principles. Mark Ballora comes from a very strong background - New York University and McGill University are the top schools in North America for Music Technology - and the information is presented in a logical, straight-forward and easy-to-undertand format. I am currently using the text as a resource for my physics research project, and would recommend it to any music technology student with an understanding of physics and calculus.

Exiles from Eden: Religion and the Academic Vocation in Ame
Schwehn, the dean of the honors college at Valparaiso University, has written one of the best books in the current spate of religion and higher education volumes. His focus is on teaching as the heart of the academic vocation. He argues that the virtues of religious faith nurture the kinds of virtues that are needed for teaching. He contrasts an older model of education which sought to discover truth in order to shape character, with the modern research university ideal of creating knowledge in a value free exploration so that it can be used to enhance our power. The former is more congruent with teaching and with faith. The latter is at odds with the teaching model of higher education, and in practice the research models undermines the very virtues that makes honest researchers possible.

Finding Humanity in a Nasty Future World
Extensions is a novella that never does what you expect. The most engrossing part of the story is about exceptional kids groping their way toward friendship and adulthood in rural futuristic surroundings where more is going on than meets the eye. But if this sounds like Orson Scott Card, hold onto your hat, because the answers are bigger and meaner than you imagine. Every time you think you've figured it out the author adroitly yanks the rug out from under you, leaving you standing somewhere you never expected to be.
