Brotherhood and a battle with cancer.
I found this book accidentally, after my own battle with cancer and could identify with everything in the book. Dr. Portera makes the medical aspect of cancer understandable to the layperson, and Charlie speaks for cancer patients as to the emotions one experiences when fighting the disease. I read the book in one sitting and would recommend it to anyone who knows a person with cancer or a family going through this ordeal. It also gives good advice on navigating the treatment choices and options.

A Story of Two Brothers and Their Journey Through Cancer
I found this book accidentally, after going through my own trial with cancer and its treatment. I read it in one sitting, and could identify with so much. It is a touching story of brotherhood, and an informative account of navigating the journey of cancer from diagnosis to choosing treatment and living through the treatment. Dr. Portera's medical knowledge makes leukemia understandable to the lay person. Charlie's personal diary is an honest account of how it feels during treatment. I would recommend this book to anyone who knows a cancer patient or a family with a cancer patient.

The Triumph of God's Kingdom in the Millennium and End Times

Catholic position on the Millennium, End Times, and Rapture
Just what is the Millennium and is it an acceptable part of Roman Catholic teaching? What follows is a brief summary of Fr. Joseph Iannuzzi's landmark book. The book clears up two points that are very relevant to the current dialog among Christians regarding the end times - Jesus does not come in the flesh to usher in the Millennium, nor does the Rapture begin the Millennium.

Fr. Iannuzzi asks the question: "Did the Apostolic Fathers ever mention an 'era of peace' or an intermediary reign of Christ on earth?" (p. 10). He shows unequivocally that the answer is yes. The first half of the book is a rather difficult, slow read, since Fr. has to prove that the Fathers of the Church did in fact leave a legacy of writings that gives a specifically Catholic understanding of the Millennium.

He shows that the proper concept of the Millennium is consistent with Catholic teaching, and can be traced back to the earliest Church Fathers. This view is derived solely from Scripture, Tradition, and the Magisterium. No visionaries or private revelations are cited (making this book unique in Catholic circles among books that discuss the end times).

To summarize very briefly, there will be two tribulations, two triumphs, two remnants and two kingdoms. One set of these events occurs at the beginning of the Millennium, and the other at its end.

Fr. Iannuzzi makes no predictions as to actual dates and times.

However, in salvation history, four thousand years preceded Christ, and two thousand years have followed upon his birth. The next thousand years would be the seventh thousand, or the seventh day, the Sabbath day rest. Hence this period may very well be the millennial period. After the end of the seventh day, comes the eighth or eternal day of God's everlasting kingdom. However, we do not know for sure if the thousand years is to be taken literally, nor for sure when it will begin.

In scripture, the Day of the Lord refers to the whole seventh day, or the whole thousand-year period. The Millennium is the period of peace which marks the peak of this Day. The defeat of Antichrist will herald the beginning of the Millennium, or thousand year spiritual reign of Christ. The binding of Satan for a thousand years is also at the beginning of the Millennium.

The reign of Jesus during the Millennium will be a Eucharistic reign.

Jesus will not come in the flesh to begin the Millennium, but will come in spirit and power. To say that Jesus will come in the flesh for the thousand years is the heresy of Millenarianism. To say that He will come in the flesh for a thousand years and establish a 'sensual' kingdom of carnal banquets is the heresy of Chiliasm.

The end of the Millennium is marked by the final defeat of Satan (Gog, Magog period). The Rapture or gathering up with Christ refers to the final judgement, and will be at the end of the millennial period, not at its beginning.

The end of the seventh day is the end of time, and the beginning of eternity, or the eighth day of eternal rest, the eternal kingdom of God.

Thus there are then two separate tribulations, one at the beginning of the day (Antichrist), and one at the end of the day (Satan), the 'great' tribulation. There are two remnants, the Christian survivors of each of the two tribulations. There are two triumphs - the first triumph heralds the Temporal Kingdom and the second triumph heralds the Eternal Kingdom.

The book goes into detail about the characteristics of these two Kingdoms, the information coming from the same sources he uses throughout: Scripture, Church Fathers and Doctors, and the Magisterium.

Buy the book -- find out the answers!
I bought this book because I was concerned about what is happening in Uganda with the "Ten Commandments" sect and I wanted to know what's behind this "end of the world" prophesy.

This book is a significant work that clearly demostrates why the world will not end in the year 2000. Iannuzzi documents critical Christian bible prophecy errors which demonstrates why popular prophecy commentators have been consistenly wrong with their proclamations concerning the imminent end of the world.

The author makes clear two critical errors -- the missing links -- which causes these well-meaning Christians to hold their mistaken position. Written in scholary fashion, the text lifts any confusion about what God has in store for His people during the millennium.

This book presently sits, front row center -- on my Christian library shelf. Brilliant!

Find What You Want in San Francisco with This Guide!
This guide is packed with great information to get whatever it is you're looking for in San Francisco. I found the book to be user friendly, down to earth, and honest. Since I am a vinyl junkie, I was thrilled to look in the index and find the heading for "Record Stores". This guide was extremely useful when exploring "The Haight", my favorite area of The City. Bravo to the contributors, and to the Manic D production team, for this great Second Edition!

Pocket-sized, fun!
This guidebook is a wonderfull resource if you're just visiting or planing to stay awhile. Each section is written by a different person, with different interests and perspectives (bars, thrift stores, piercing, poetry readings, bookstores, etc.) It also has useful sections on Oakland and Berkeley. If you're thinking of moving to the "Bay Area", there are handy guides to housing and employment. It's a great book, and worth every penny!

Valuable and comprehensive
This book provides very readable and very exhaustive coverage of many issues related to digital photography. It is not really a beginner's guide that explains how to use a digital camera (how to compose a photo, etc.). Serious photographers, as well as graphic artists, printers, etc. will greatly appreciate the extensive coverage of issues such as how digital cameras work; their advantages and problems; relationship of their output sizes to output sizes of film cameras (that is, aspect ratios), color management; Photoshop; output devices; types of scanners; and many other issues. I have studied these issues elsewhere and found this book added to my understanding. It provides a great foundation (and serves as a great reference) to help one intelligently consume additional information found in other books and magazines. The information is such that it will not be outdated quickly; nonetheless, I will look forward to successive editions.

Understanding Digital Photography--Two thumbs up!
Understanding Digital Photography is a straightforward, easy-to-understand book that explores digital photography in an easy to understand way. Great book for those moving into digital photography, or those who just want to learn more about the digital darkroom. Also has a great chapter about copyright.

An Inspired Work
This is truly an inspired work by an inspired author. I have read Dr. Baratta's previous book, "Strengthing the United Nations', and I feel that this is a wonderful addition to his work. Dr. Baratta is without question an authority on the United Nations.

Meeting the World Constitutional Crisis
This annotated bibliography concentrates on literature produced since the end of the Cold War, when "U.N. reform" seemed an alternative vision for world politics. Constitutionally, an organization of sovereign states is proving inadequate to solving global problems. This book surveys the most progressive literature on U.N. reform. -- J. Baratta "Of use to anyone looking for an introduction to the scholarly literature on the U.N. and international relations. A useful addition to any reference collection." -- D. Lee, Choice (March 1996) "Whether you are researching aspects of the work of the U.N., or just interested in what happened when, or how a specific problem was handled, this book will guide you to anything you could ever want to know about the organization and its procedures." -- O. Bosch, Bulletin of Arms Control (December 1995) "The author aims at alerting the reader to 'a peculiar blindness in the reighning school of thought on international relations (realism)' while 'contributine to a wiser study of the emerging world community in the future (interdependence).'" -- Booknotes, UNA-USA Interdependent (Fall 1996)

you think you are crazy --but you are not
Every woman knows the phenomenon--you scream at your kids, you fight with your husband, you eat potato chips by the bag, everything your boss says makes you see red--what is going on????

You go for professional help and the nice shrink says "Here, take these pills for depression or these tranquillizers." And, sure enough, two weeks later you feel great and believe the shrink is a miracle worker. But guess what--it's just your menstural cycle. You're going to be screaming at your kids and fighting with your husband all over again in a few days if you don't read this book and find out what you really need to do is to get on top of your hormones. The way it's explained here, it's not that hard. You need to watch your diet, especially caffeine, alcohol and sugars (the things we automatically turn to!); you need to see a doctor for natural (not synthetic)hormone replacements in some cases; but most of all you need to understand that while you are trying to get on with your life, your body has its own agenda. This book is packed with useful information and is upbeat and easy to read. In short, it's a lifesaver, whether you are a teenager just starting your menstrual cycle or a middle-aged lady still going through the motions.

A REAL LIFE SAVER!
This book helped save my sanity. It is concise and tells you everything you need to know to get real relief once & for all.

This book speaks to the heart
For years I have cherished the books from Joseph Bayly. I was delighted to receive this book not only with compilations of some of his other writings, but with a diary (so to speak) of what it meant to him to be a Sunday School Teacher.

This is a great book combining the best of Joseph Bayly into one priceless edition.

An inspiring legacy of faith and spiritual realities.
A Voice In The Wilderness includes some of the late Joseph Bayly's most remembered work, as well as lesser known selections. His gift for afflicting the comfortable is evident as he prods comfortable Christians in his "Out of My Mind" columns; the parables (including "How Silently, How Silently"); and the last sermon he preached, "His Holiness Possible Today?". Equally powerful are his words the comfort the afflicted, including "When a Child Dies", and selections from The Last Thing We Talk About. Each selection is searching, timely, and timeless. A Voice In The Wilderness is a fitting memorial, a moving spiritual legacy of the Christian faith, and highly recommended reading for anyone seeking inspiration and spiritual reflection on the realities of our lives.

Voice of Voices That Inspire
An excellent voice of voices that inspire and give the spur not only to look, but to leap. "Voices of Courage" shows us that we are created to manifest the glory of God and shine like children. It shows that our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate but that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is a marvelous book that should be given to all graduating class of 2000 and beyond.
