A Truly Great Read
I loved this book.... And Lake Monsters even looks as good as it reads. The cover and design of the book are very stylish, which helps you get into it. There is even a map in the front of the book laying out the islands described inside. I frequently referred back to this map to get my bearings. And it helped me see truly what a sense of isolation the characters must have felt. You know I have to say, Lake Monsters didn't turn out to be what I expected; in the end, I think it actually turned out to be better! The book is not so much about hunting for and actually finding the monster inside the lake. The danger - which is even more terrifying - lurks elsewhere on the island. The protagonist's attempt to get his life together and do something meaningful by searching for the monster in the lake is intercepted by unforeseeable events, and scary isolationist island Vermonters. I love the beauty of Vermont, but after reading this book, there is no way I would ever set foot on such an island. Lake Monsters really has made a lasting impression on me. And the unexpected twist of an ending left me shocked and with my jaw on the floor. Lake Monsters will become one of few books I'll enjoy reading again and again!

Lake Monsters
One isolated island, a bunch of crazy off-beat characters, a
mysterious monastary and a "monster". That's what you get in the latest re-print by Hardscrabble Books. Originally titled Dark Twilight this is actually Joseph Citro's first novel. Citro is really one of the true under appreciated writers of all time.

Landlords' Rights and Duties in Massachusetts : With Forms.
I have several apartments and condos. Though I am well versed with the real estate laws in Mass., this book is a great reference for me. Any landlord in Mass. should have this book, it is easy to read and understand. Dealing with the court system can be a nightmare if you are not prepared, believe me. If you don't have everything in proper order, you lose. This book will assist you in what are your responsiblities are, you can bet your tenant does. Beware of the professional tenant! Plus, the book gives helpful hints to make your life a little easier.

Very helpful
My husband and I own a two-family house near Boston. This book has been very helpful in knowing what we are legally responsible for. We also used the forms included. Since purchasing this book, we've realized we are much more detail-oriented than most landlords. Tenants have many rights that landlords simply ignore that could really hurt them in the end. Courts don't accept "ignorance" as an excuse from landlords. This book is well worth it and easy to understand for a landlord interested in the legalities of smaller residential and commercial properties.

A great addition to your daily spiritual readings
This is an excellent book for the whole family. The daily readings can be shared at the supper table, or as you put the children to bed. I have found this book to be a great addition to my own daily reading as well.

Not your run of the mill hagiography.
This delightful, inspiring book picks up where the popular Butler's Lives of the Saints leaves off.

Written to coincide with the Church's liturgical calendar each day provides a concise biography of the Saint and then practical lessons which we can learn from the Saint.

This is a fantastic resource for your family's daily reading and prayer time. If this doesn't help you to live a saintly life nothing will.

Important book
An important book on life insurance by the most knowledgeable author on the subject. THE book to read.

The definitive guide to life insurance.
Joseph Belth provides the analytical consumer with a rational, systematic approach to understanding personal insurable risk and how to transfer that risk to an insurance company. Readers can browse the chapters to get answers to questions specific to their individual situation, or read it cover-to-cover for a comprehensive overview. Of particular value are the strategies for assessing how good your policy is and whether it's a "good deal". Although a bit dated, it is still the best book on the subject. Those interested in a more current discussion of the industry, company ratings, and consumer issues are referred to Professor Belth's newsletter THE INSURANCE FORUM, PO Box 245, Ellettsville, Indiana, 47429.

Wonderful Book
This is not normally the genre of book I would read. I only did so because it was highly recommended by 2 friends. The pages seemed to turn themselves and I finished vowing to re-read it soon. It left me with a fresh outlook and enthusiasm to put my ideas into play! I highly recommend it to single and married people.

Pure reading pleasure
As a wordsmith, Epstein has few peers. These essays are to be luxuriated in, read and re-read. Pure pleasure.

The Familiar Essay's Modern Master
Joseph Epstein is the type of writer whose works everyone should read but, sadly, too few do. He is both erudite and witty while retaining the nonchalance of "just one of the guys from the neighborhood." His writing is always insightful and always enjoyable. To those who keep a notepad and pencil handy while reading to jot down a tidbit of obscure information or a reference to a book to be explored at a later date, Mr. Epstein's books will necessitate the presence of a good pencil sharpener as well. Sadly, most of his books, of which there have been many, are now out of print. Such is the fate of interesting, witty, and sublime writers in our questionably literate time. Thankfully, A Line Out For A Walk remains available.

Comprising a series of essays, most of which originally published under his pen name "Aristides" while serving his remarkable tenure as editor of that once great journal of American letter, The American Scholar, A Line Out For A Walk is a remarkable book. In it can be found something to please the tastes of most everyone; reminiscences of old friends (some notable, some known only to a few), literary investigations, histories, ponderings, puns, observations, laments, biographical sketches, and reflections - all are offered in the straightforward yet eloquent style that has become Mr. Epstein's trademark. Should anyone finish a reading of this book and not felt themselves to have spent the time wisely and profitably, they should abandon reading altogether as they are obviously missing the point of it.

Mr. Epstein's essays are not the thin, watery things we so commonly see today, containing only a few personal, usually embarrassing remembrances of the author' life. They are full of life, being composed both the high and the low, the intellectual and the mundane. In one essay alone you are likely to find some of the life of Henry James, a note on the achievements of Jewish baseball players, an observation on the nature of indoor cats, three snippets from Lady Montagu's travel journals, a tale of life in the Chicago of the 50's, a little known personal habit of Woodrow Wilson, the real meaning behind one of Gainsborough's paintings, and a brief life of a little known but highly respected journalist from the 1890's. These are not things expected in a modern essayist; these are the qualities of products from the golden years of the essay. Indeed, Mr. Epstein should be, and no doubt someday will be, ranked among the likes of Lamb, Hazlitt, and Leibling. After all to which he has been subjected in his lifetime, it is the least that can be done to honor his outstanding work.

Powerful...
A wonderful read, I couldn't put it down. This is a terrific story of a war hero from a generation that is in the process of disappearing. I'm so glad it was recommended to me.

A vivid war memoir from a dying generation
Joe Lovoi has made a much-needed contribution to the archives of the WW2 generation--one made up of our parents and grandparents that will be completely lost in the very-near future. His amazing account of his time as a prisoner in Nazi Germany vividly grips the reader as he describes every aspect of the POW experience. A must-read for children too...we must never forget the story of this generation who has certainly seen far more action than we.

Listen to the Voices from the Sea: Writings of the Fallen Japanese Students

Fresh Perspectives On Japanese Militarism
Professors Yamanouchi & Quinn offer a much needed corrective to the five-decade old demonization of the Japanese soldier. This evocative, poetic, and compelling collection of soldiers' letters strikes down the dusty image of Japan's warriors as mindless, unthinking fanatics. In this volume we discover an entirely new and fresh insight into the mind-set and attitudes of young sailors, soldiers, and airmen who died in the service of Japan. The reader cannot help but be impressed by the sensitivity of these young men, by their literary yearnings, by their touching hopes for their families and futures, by the lyrical portraits they paint of even the grim and dangerous settings to which the war brought them. No little debt is owed to the editors for their masterful translation of these letters into useful and understandable American idiom. This is a rare and unforgettable reading experience which illuminates once again the common threads which bind humanity.

A Dramatic Anti-War Book From Japan
Dr. Midori Yamanouchi's translation of this post World War II collection of letters is brilliant. The work is a deeply moving collection of diaries written by young Japanese soldiers who gave their lives in a series of battles going from China, through the Pacific to the skies closer to Japan. Many of them were cultivated young university students, full of life and dreams, reflecting on the beauty of life, the love of their families and the painful duty that was their lot. These are sad voices, the now stilled voices of tragedy. Overall, an insight into war and the human spirit that rivals such western classics as "The Red Badge of Courage" or "All Quiet on the Western Front". Generations often forget the 'sins' of the past. Reading this book - now in English - may just remind us to avoid the trajedy of war at all costs.
