the Old Home House
This is an early Lincoln book, a collection of 11 short tales slightly linked by "The Old Home House". The Old Home House was a large house on the outskirts of the very small village of Wellmouth Port. It had been inherited by Cap'n Jonadab Wixon, and when he went to inspect the property with his buddy Barzilla Wingate, they were met by con man/entrepreneur Peter T. Brown, who persuaded them to set it up as a hotel catering to the nostalgic rich, by specializing in old-fashioned country food and corn-shuck mattresses. This provides the setting for some of the stories: of hen-pecked husbands with status obsessed wives, fortune-seeking con men, locals even more colorful than Wingate and Wixon, and obnoxious tourists (some things are forever). But 5 of the tales have nothing to do with the Old Home House, and 3 are not even set on Cape Cod. Two are tall tales set in the South Pacific, and one is set on the Hudson River. The time settings for Lincoln's novels range from the early or mid 1800's past World War I. Cape Cod Stories is set in the fairly recent past (from 1907). Lincoln wrote at least some of his books to complement the wave of national nostalgia for the pre-industrial past at the turn of the century. I sympathize with that, and the Cape Cod setting and dialect amplify it for me. I liked the 2 non-hotel Cape Cod stories best: The Mark on the Door and His Native Heath, perhaps because they provide more drama than antique humor.

Salt Water Would Not Quench Louis' Thrist for Gloire.
After the surrender at Yorktown, it seemed that Britan's Atlantic superiority was at an end. However, Nelson's great victory in Egypt made it perfectly clear that naval power is far more than faster ships and better cannon. Britain, in the course of modern European history, met and overcame many naval challenges in establishment of its empire. In retrospect, it is taken for granted that sea power is married to economic strength, but when Colbert proposed his plan for ocean gloire to Louis XIV it was genuinely new and original. He recognized an opportunity to compete successfully against Holland in and around the Indian Ocean and Japan. His idea was immediately adopted, but on the short term it seemed a disappointing failure. Ames advances an argument that perhaps one crucial sea battle in 1672 might have changed history, by establishing the French East Company before the Britsh were able to supplant the Dutch there. However, perhaps a result of treachery, the battle never happened. Ames' documentary account provokes the reader to speculate upon alternate lines of history, while presenting some great men of the past in a throughly sociable fashion. His first book is an excellent balance between History as it was and History as it might have been.

Wireless security: misleading title ?
When I purchased this book, I thought that it would contain some information on wireless security such as GSM, CDMA, etc. but this book only talks about another sense of wireless which is applicable to other appliances. The contents of the book give a good introductory material which might be needed before a customer decides how to secure their valueable things.

"Cosmic Enigmas"
The book is a collection of essays written by Joseph Silk through the years, and some of them have been rewritten in order to capture the new developments in astronomy and astrophysics. Although it is a popularization book, the reader is expected to have some general knowledge of physics in order to understand the arguments of the author. The book is divided into six parts spatially ordered but within each part the essays are placed in chronological order. The author follows the history of the universe from its creation to the present and the expected end. His reasoning is supported by detailed technical proof, but he describes mainly the conventionally accepted theories. He tries to exhibit fairness by mentioning several other interpretations, but many of the newer theories are completely absent from his work. This creates the impression that the book is one-sided and biased. The purpose of the book is also not quite clear as some of the essays are simply about the history of the universe, and some are focused on the current enigmas for the astronomers but, again, seen from the point of view of the conventional theories. The language is technical. The tone is impartial, but often witty, and the thought of the author is generally easy to follow. He doesn't make any assumptions about the audience, and, as a whole, the book is an interesting and motivating reading. But the lack of any arguments for or against some of the newer ideas in astronomy does take away a great deal of the pleasure from reading the book.

When Bad Things Happen to Good Characters
Nearly all his friends dead or put to pasture, lured out of retirement for one last case, gay PI Dave Brandstetter decides to investigate the unlikely tale of a little boy who claims he witnessed a murder and was then kidnapped and beaten by a mysterious woman named 'Rachel.' Sure enough, there does turn out to be a dead man: Cricket Shales, a first-rate guitarist but less than efficient drug dealer. Pursuing this case against the wishes of his lover Cecil, an ailing Dave is dragged into the underbelly of the music industry, and the grim world of street drugs. As one would expect from Hansen, this is a sharply written, effective and clever detective story. I do think good old Dave deserves a more imaginative fate--in fact, I'd have liked to see Hansen start the book with the last few pages of story, and flash us back to Dave's first ever case in post-Chandler Los Angeles. Then we could start the adventures of Dave all over again! Okay, I admit this is the long goodbye I'd have been happy to postpone permanently.

Lots of advice on screenwriting....
Ok, obviously this book is years out of date, but it's still a great read if you want to be a professional screenwriter. Robert Towne, William Goldman, Paul Schrader. All the big screenwriters from the seventies are here and Brady seems to have got to them before they got sick of telling the same anecdotes over and over. Worth the trouble to track down.
