Excellent book on Will Smith's life.
This is an excellent book for students and gives a lot of facts about Will Smith's life. It also has many good morals. The morals are to be as good as you can be and not spend all of your money on 6 cars and 2 motorcycles. You really need to read the book to get the most from the morals that are contained within this book. It is a good book for grades 3 - 12.

A masterful tale of social decision making
Marshall provides a deep insight into the Native American world through the medium of the novel. The tale describes a society's reaction to agents of change and the means by which the changes are assimilated into culture.

Winter of the Holy Iron describes the affects of the "white man" and the new technologies used by the "white man" on Native American culture. Rather than being a simple comparitive novel, Marshall weaves a tale of conflict, understanding, and uncertainty from the perspective of a Native American but does not come to conclusions. According to the story, these types of change face us all -- across time and across cultures. This universal treatment makes Marshall's novel interesting reading and a compelling analysis of Native American and White cultures.

Marshall portrays the Native American as far more than a passive character in history or the blood-thirsty savage. Marshall's works define the Native American as an active participant in history. This refreshing perspective, along with his oral-storytelling-tradition-on-paper writing style, define the the Native American as active and not necessarily reactionary. Even today, Marshall's tale still accurately describes the issues between acceptance of foreign ideas and goods (assimilation) and the rejection of such ideas.

I have read Marshall's two other works in book form (I found his works by chance). Winter of the Holy Iron is different from his essays but embodies the best of his short essay narratives and descriptions (like those from Dance House : Stories from Rosebud). The novel is very well written and allows Marshall to develop characters that are unforgettable -- something he also masters in his short essays. This book is a true 5 star work.

The Wisdom of the Outlaw: The Boyhood Deeds of Finn in Gaelic Narrative Tradition

Quality, not quantity
For those interested in an academic study of Irish folklore and specifically, Finn MacCool, this is one of the best books I've read on the subject. Nagy is thourough, rigorous, AND a good writer, a rare-enough combination in the world of academic literature. The subject itself, and Nagy's insights into the character of Finn and his fiana, are also extremely interesting and enlightening. A must-read for the serious student of Irish folklore. Timely daily reflections
Using and reflecting of this very astute book has led me to a greater appreciation of the variety of messages and meanings of the daily gospel. It is an excellent way to prepare for daily mass or simply to spend a few quiet moments before the start of a day. The reflections are fresh, current, and topical to today's life.

Hearts on Fire is one of the first books I pull out when I want a reflection that will get to the heart of each weekday and one of the last that I will read at night to calm and prepare for slumber.

Within the Tides

Four Tales of "Men Who Go to Sea or Live on Lonely Islands"
These are not Conrad's most famous stories: Until I read the book, I had not heard of any of them. Nonetheless, this is one author whose worst work is better than most others' best. On a recent plane trip to Seattle, I found two of the four stories merely diverting, and the other two equal to his best.

"The Partner" is a grim tale of human weakness spiralling down to a predictable horror; whereas his humorously baroque "The Inn of the Two Witches" reminds me in its tone of Washington Irving in LEGENDS OF THE ALHAMBRA, though set in a later time period.

What happens when you fall so deeply in love so fast that you can't act to save your life? Conrad gives his answer in "The Planter of Malata," in which a successful loner named Renouard confronts the yawning vastness of an empty life. Felicia Moorsom is a bit two-dimensional and a prim and proper Victorian to the nth degree. This tale is a psychological thriller that does not let you breathe until the last line.

The final tale -- "Because of the Dollars" -- is my favorite. It reminds me of ALMAYER'S FOLLY and OUTPOST OF THE ISLANDS with its shallow-draft vessels penetrating into the heart of remote islands. Captain Davidson is a classic Conrad hero caught in a trap: How he manages to escape it at the cost of a wife who doesn't love him and, by the way, his ability to smile is one of the author's most perfectly taut stories.

It is amusing to read Conrad's preface to the stories: He seems to be wincing excessively in response to early criticism after circulating the stories to his friends. Needless to say, his friends were over-critical: WITHIN THE TIDES struck me as a treasure that I had somehow overlooked all these years.

Women and Power in the Middle East provides college-level audiences with seventeen essays which analyze the social, political, economic and cultural forces shaping gender systems in the Mid-East and North Africa. These appeared at different times in the journal Middle East Report, and outline changing roles women have played in the politics of the region, when and why they mobilize, and how movements and politics affect their lives. Women's Fashion of the 1850-1920
If you are in search of a compacted archive of women's fashion from the late 19th to early 20th century, "The Wonderful World of Ladies' Fashion" is the book for you. Divided into four parts, the book goes through fashion periods like the hoop skirt and the crinoline years of 1850-1870, the age of the bustle from 1870-1908 and the narrow skirt and the new century era of 1909-1920. The book represents a background history and changes in society standards of women's fashion as well as humorous intakes of fashion during the late 19th century.

Complete with black and white illustrations, the book is comprised of magazine and publication prints from sources such as the Harper's Monthly, Peterson's Magazine, Harper's Bazar, Ladies' Indepensable Assistant, Der Bazar, Ladie's Home Journal, Happy Hours, Sears, Roebuck & Co., and Godey's Lady's Book And Magazine.

If you are in research for a period costume, whether it be for theatrical or educational purpose, you will get a great sense of the historical significance of the changes in women's wears as well as find good sources in design and construction of the dresses and accessories.
