Most Up-to-Date Book on Cambodia and Cambodian Politics
This is the most up-to-date book on Cambodia and Cambodian politics and includes information on the controversial July 1998 elections. This is a must read for both students of Cambodia and long term Cambodia watchers.

Brown and Zasloff help the reader navigate the often turbulent and violent peace process in the 1980s, the U.N.-sponsored elections, the pre-coup period of 1994 to 1997, the July 1997 coup d'etat, and the July 1998 elections. Using a variety of sources, they present an objective account of modern Cambodian (and international) efforts at peace and current day politics.

Harwichport to P-Town, Linclon is Cape Cod at its best!
Not many people ever have a chance to read Joseph C. Lincoln's books. They are extremely hard to find, because most went out of print in the early 1900's. However when you do find an antique copy, it is a real treasure. His stories echo back to a time of whaling, fishing, snowy Cape Cod Christmas', friends, warm summer days on the beach, sailing, and working the cranberry bogs. It is quintessential Americana, with a twist of adventure, drama, and sometimes mystery wrapped up in a flavorful, Jimmy Buffet-esque atmosphere of life on old Cape Cod.

Helpful and Useful
As an English graduate student looking forward to a career of teaching, I have read several books on the subject. This particular text is one of the most useful I've seen so far. The articles cover a myriad of teaching approaches and exercises for potential students.

While not forcing one particular philosophy on the reader, articles by authors like Peter Elbow, Douglas B. Park, Lisa Ede and Andrea Lunsford offer different perspectives on different ares of the teaching process. These articles help the reader decide how important "audience" is, and whether literature has a place in a freshman composition course.

Chapters cover such areas as: "Teachers," "Students," "Approaches," "Perspectives," "Composing and Revising," and "Styles," among other things. This book would be incredibly useful for a new teacher, a potential teacher, or even a student interested in further developing his or her own writing skills. The book offers ideas for a teacher to help a student with typical writing roadblocks: how to start, how to get organized, and how to overcome writer's block. An invaluable tool that has helped me not only develop my own philosophy on teaching, but has also helped me in my own writing process.

Excellent resource for LBG persons and counselors
I have used this book both personally and professionally on numerous occasions. I appreciate the authors' clear knowledge of the specialized needs of lesbian, bisexual, and gay persons in terms of career counseling. The best part of the book is on how to create ally relationships with heterosexuals on the job. Outstanding work. I have adopted this for use in graduate counseling classes that I teach. I would encourage the authors to include transgendered persons if they do a second edition.

Classy version of classic horror story
"Carmilla," which predates Stoker's "Dracula," introduced the lesbian vampire to literature, and this reading of the entire text by Megan Follows breathes real life into LeFanu's somewhat antiquated Victorian style. Follows makes the narrator Laura into an intelligent and compelling guide through the tale; she also puts the proper ambivalence in the descriptions of Carmilla's advances, vampiric and otherwise. Indeed, what's most impressive is how clearly the lesbian subtext is presented, and how much emotion is involved. Altbough the plot is a little obvious after two centuries of rip-offs, LeFanu's innate storytelling skill and Follows' presentation make the anachronisms fairly painless, and the uniquely unsettling bits still have their chills.

Caspar David Friedrich and the Subject of Landscape
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (December, 1990)
Author: Joseph Leo Koerner
Amazon base price: $55.00
Used price: $83.26
Average review score:

A Portrait of the Invisible
Koerner has written a philosophical masterpiece in the form of an art book. Caspar David Friedrich is one of the most complex and thought-provoking of nineteenth-century artists, whose whose exploration of perception shows up in his most mundane paintings as well as his most grandiose.
Koerner shows us how even a painting of something as simple as a bushy thicket in the snow contains many subtle contradictions and complexities that baffle the eye as we examine it more closely. The apparent simplicity and underlying intensity of many of his works is similar to that of Edward Hopper, on whom he seems to have been a major influence (and this book bears comparison with Kranzfelder's "Hopper").
Friedrich specialized in painting the human figure seen from behind (rueckenfigur), and this ties in with sense of nostalgia that is a major component of his art. A really notable example of this is "Abbey Graveyard under Snow", a painting of a ruined mediaeval monastery with a spectral procession of monks from a bygone age; this painting was destroyed by bombing in 1945 and exists only in reproduction - a ghostly painting of ghosts.
Koerner's dense prose is heavy going, but well worth the effort because it contains so much; the author evidently has a thorough grounding in philosophy as well as a great sympathy for his subject.
The last chapter is entitled "deja vu", and this sums up one of the main feelings aroused by this art. The last sentence is worth quoting:
"And it arrests you on the Dresden heath, before the thicket in winter, when what you thought were just alders in the snow are fragments of your darkest history".

I couldn't believe this guy was once a police officer.
The story was written in a way that I couldn't put it down until I read the entire book. Being in law enforcement, I have never heard of a story like this until I read the book, and then the way it ended...it really made you think. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about true crime.

Engrossing
While wondering around the library one day, I saw this book and figured I might as well read it because it was a "classic." I am sooo glad I did. This book was wonderful. The plot was complex up until the last. The characters were very well developed. I couldn't put this one down. Just a warning though, this book has a quite a bit of bad language in it, but the story is still absolutly magnificent. A "must read"
