The Firefighting Buff's Guide to New York City: The Five Borough, Five Alarm Reference to the Second Homes of New York's Bravest

A Superior and Quirky Guide Whose Time is Right
Joseph Schneiderman did his homework in abundance for this extraordinary guidebook. He displayed a deep interest in the New York Fire Department for many years before the tragedy of 9-11 showed the rest of the world what tremendous human beings and professionals the firefighters are.
Consequently, the guidebook pays due attention to the outer boroughs, which in the culture of firefighting and firehouses do not relinquish pride of place to Manhattan. The anecdotes about his particular experiences with individual firefighters enliven each page, as do the abundant and high-quality photographs of a great many of the "houses". He provides a most welcome feature for the interested person--the prospective "buff"--who wants to visit some of the houses: a sense of the context of each within the city, e.g. travel directions, listing of other firehouses nearby that could easily be grouped for a short tour, even mention of where to get snacks in the vicinity.
And the Quiz for readers is one of the funniest things in print.
My advice: run don't walk to buy this book for yourself. If you know anybody who likes firefighting, firehouses, firetrucks, firemen, or any part of New York City, give it as a gift as well.

Great wonderful book
This book is excelent, Everyone that checks out this book, will love it. I personally know the author, he sits in front of me in chemistry class, and all i will say is, the kid knows something about firemen. Buy the book and send a kid to college.

A must for any angler and fish lover
Some time ago, I wrote a great review of this book, but I see that it's been removed for some reason. Nonetheless, I have to again state that this is an indispensible field guide and reference book for anyone who loves fishing and learning more about the natural histories of the freshwater fish in the central United States. Peterson, Golden, and Audubon guides cover all of North America which makes most of their books cumbersome and useless to those of us in the heartland, non-ocean states. The pictures are the most lifelike depictions of fish I've ever seen of any North American fish. It's also full of interesting tid bits of each fish species. Again, great book. It's in a class of its own.

midwest must
This book is the best I have in my library. All the important information on fishes in the Missouri or Mississippi drainage are well covered. The color pencil drawings are flawless.

A Dangerous but Fascinating Friendship
This book is a gem and should be on the reading list of any fan of Fitzgerald or Hemingway. Much of the contents are anecdotal recollections of Hemingway regarding Fitzgerald who he regarded as immensely talented but weak and dominated (by Zelda and the bottle). A variety of letters between the two help to bring to life the closeness that was in evidence in the early friendship before Fitzgerald's decline and Hemingway's enormous success (followed by his growing intolerance of the waning and less successful like FSF). This book also does not attempt to hide the sometimes incomprehensible mean -spiritedness of Hemingway when despite all his success (largely aided by the early support of others he later cast aside) still felt enough threatened to throw his drowning friends an anchor.

fantastic
This has new stuff that wasn't in Brucolli's previous book on the two authors SCOTT AND ERNEST. I read that one, and when starting FITZGERALD AND HEMINGWAY, thought I'd read the same book, but with a few added facts. Well, there are tons of new facts in F & H that are EXTREMELY interesting to the Fitzgerald and Hemingway fan. I recommend this book highly. I've read much of it more than once.

first real look at moonwalkers, and their lives
this was, to my knowledge, the first book done on all 12 moonwalkers,/together, and which tells about the men, their respective missions, and rest of lives, upto late 1980's!what they achieved as astronauts, men, and how they ended upin later life! interesting!

TELLS ABOUT ALL MOONWLKERS
This book tells the reader a little about all 12 men that walked on the Moon, and their reflections of their experience, their lives a little, and how Project Apollo and being an astronaut changed their lives forever! Could read 1000 books like this one, and never get tired of it

Off-course, of course.
DIARIES of FRANZ KAFKA

July 21, 1995 Purposely omitted, "the". Thus, an article averted. A catastrophe forestalled. Like my car when it was still moving, i.e., before it stopped moving, just in front of the new school called The New School, where I was taking a crash course--in hopes of preventing a car crash--in Kafka, (the) Diaries of. All by myself--teacher and pupil. I the teacher, I the pupil. And where was Kafka while all this learninhg was/wasn't going on? Sitting in my car, of course, asleep at the wheel, which turned round and round in his hands, like the globe in God's. Will I ever obtain a learner's permit? Will he? (Will He?)

An invaluable resource for anyone studying Kafka.
Kafka left instructions with Max Brod to burn all of these journals. Max, however, believed they were too important to be lost and devoted himself to organizing the diaries for publication. Kafka made his entries in a manner convenient for himself: starting at the back, writing upside down, changing journals daily. All of this made the task of organizing them very difficult. Max Brod did a tremendous job and only misjudged the placement of a handful of entries. The diaries themselves contain a lot of things no writer would want seen. They are fragments, drafts, and sketches he worked on during the nights. Most are not very good--as they are. Their value comes in the later, published, incarnations. These writings give us a little insight into the way Franz Kafka worked. Several of the entries are worked and reworked over a period of years. They show subtle shifts in Kafka's insight, perspective, and craftsmanship.

From WhereThe Sun Now Stands by Will Henry
This one of the most powerful books about Chief Joseph that i have had the pleasure to read. The stirring narrative from a native Nez Perez, really puts me in the story and makes me very, very angry about the way we have treated Native Americans,Will Henry was one of the most gifted and talented western writers of all time. I wish his books would make a comeback on the bestseller lists.

This story is ingeniusly written.
The book moved me and made me think about the hardships that the Indian peoples went through, especially the Nez Perce. It had lots of neat little points, and a different perspective of Chief Joseph. This was probably the best story that I've read.

Excellent Book!
An interesting collection of stories about WWII (and after) told from the soldier's prospective. If you are a history buff this book is a must read.

A moving account of life in the South Pacific during WWII
This book is an amazing collection of short stories by a soldier who spent over 3 years in the South Pacific during World War II. It is riveting and educational reading. It tells many stories of the battles on Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal, but it also contains many moving human interest stories about life during that time. I highly recommend this book for those who want to learn about that time, and what our fathers and grandfathers went through during World War II.

If you want to understand about Gas Dynamics, better read this book. It can be either used as a text book or as a reference. A must for a person dealing with thermo-fluid mechanics.

Excellent Gas Dynamics Resource
I used this book in Graduate School at Purdue in a Gas Dynamics class taught by the co-author, J.D. Hoffman. A excellent, in-depth text, that starts with the fundamentals and builds. The best and most comprehensive book on the subject I've seen.

GEOMETRIES OF THE MIND
One of the few authors in recent history who knows the occult, horror and hard science. One of the best reads of this decade.

This is the best horror/sci fi book that I have ever read!
This book is the best horror/science fiction/psychological thriller that I have ever read!

I have never been one for the 'Horror' or 'Science Fiction' genres. I enjoy taut thrillers with intense psychological suspense that also give powerful imagery. Not only did I find these qualities in this first 'Horror/Suspense' book of Keller's, but the story line was so dramatic and mind shattering, that I couldn't put it down. I HAD to finish the entire book in two days. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys literate, extremely well written 'Horror/Suspense/Sci-Fi' or even 'Psychological Thrillers,' since this book combines all of them masterfully. Sounds impossible, I know, but it does just that! It literally opens the mind to other worlds and other possibilities, and does so through a dynamic story line. I can't praise it enough, and can't wait for his others to come out. In fact, I enjoyed it so much, I did what I have never done before for any other novel: I purchased thirteen copies for family and friends! I also wrote a review of this book on other .coms as well. Finally, this book is just plain fun to read, too!

"Survive...Thrive...Strive"
I found Get Better Not Bitter by Joseph Almond to be clear, direct and penetrating. For me, one of the most powerful ideas was the concept of "Defining" attitudes, ideas and issues over which I DO have control in my life. As a professional counselor, I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in specific tools to rise above adversity and weave their aspirations into a richly textured and meaningful life.
