July 21, 1995 Purposely omitted, "the". Thus, an article averted. A catastrophe forestalled. Like my car when it was still moving, i.e., before it stopped moving, just in front of the new school called The New School, where I was taking a crash course--in hopes of preventing a car crash--in Kafka, (the) Diaries of. All by myself--teacher and pupil. I the teacher, I the pupil. And where was Kafka while all this learninhg was/wasn't going on? Sitting in my car, of course, asleep at the wheel, which turned round and round in his hands, like the globe in God's. Will I ever obtain a learner's permit? Will he? (Will He?)

I have never been one for the 'Horror' or 'Science Fiction' genres. I enjoy taut thrillers with intense psychological suspense that also give powerful imagery. Not only did I find these qualities in this first 'Horror/Suspense' book of Keller's, but the story line was so dramatic and mind shattering, that I couldn't put it down. I HAD to finish the entire book in two days. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys literate, extremely well written 'Horror/Suspense/Sci-Fi' or even 'Psychological Thrillers,' since this book combines all of them masterfully. Sounds impossible, I know, but it does just that! It literally opens the mind to other worlds and other possibilities, and does so through a dynamic story line. I can't praise it enough, and can't wait for his others to come out. In fact, I enjoyed it so much, I did what I have never done before for any other novel: I purchased thirteen copies for family and friends! I also wrote a review of this book on other .coms as well. Finally, this book is just plain fun to read, too!

Consequently, the guidebook pays due attention to the outer boroughs, which in the culture of firefighting and firehouses do not relinquish pride of place to Manhattan. The anecdotes about his particular experiences with individual firefighters enliven each page, as do the abundant and high-quality photographs of a great many of the "houses". He provides a most welcome feature for the interested person--the prospective "buff"--who wants to visit some of the houses: a sense of the context of each within the city, e.g. travel directions, listing of other firehouses nearby that could easily be grouped for a short tour, even mention of where to get snacks in the vicinity.
And the Quiz for readers is one of the funniest things in print.
My advice: run don't walk to buy this book for yourself. If you know anybody who likes firefighting, firehouses, firetrucks, firemen, or any part of New York City, give it as a gift as well.
