Not the best at all and unnecessarily demoralizing in places
As the wife of a man just diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer, I found this book very disturbing because it seems to over-emphasize deaths and tragedies and not survivors in many places. For example, in the section on how prostate cancer impacts spouses and daughters, there were nine women's stories--five of whom had their men die of prostate cancer, two of whom had upsetting stories about advanced prostate cancer, and only two with men who had had locally confined prostate cancer and seemed to do alright. Since 13 percent of all men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and only 2-3 percent of all men die from it, this seemed to be a VERY VERY unbalanced treatment.

More than 80 percent of men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer DO NOT DIE FROM it according to my reading--but in this book more than half of the examples of the men in the women's lives did die! I was looking for people who had gone through what I can expect to go through and instead read A LOT about a minority who suffered horribly ("The last five years have been a whirlwind of anger, fear, uncertainty, indifference, anxiety and depression" from one. "My future was wiped out . . . Loss of income, lonliness, no companion, no best friend, no lover. Long, lonely evenings, days, weekends. . . Widow" as the CONCLUDING words of another.) This was not helpful to me. And the acocunts from survivors were not in-depth enough on the whole, though I did really like seeing all their names and faces--that in itself was reassuring. But there was only a scant paragraph from Bob Dole, for example.

The book is graphically VERY well done but not as informative overall as the prostate cancer books by either Dr. Walsh of Johns Hopkins or Dr. Loo or Cornell. Both of those gave me more facts, understanding and a more realistic understanding. The ABC's of Prostate Cancer seems designed to have people take prostate cancer seriously and get tested--which I'm all for. It is not the best book for those with early disease to read or even more advanced disease in my opinion since the in-depth profiles are not representative of the frequency and ditribution of prostate survivors. There is also not enough on diet and new treatments.

The finest book in its class
The ABCs of Prostate Cancer is simply the finest book in its class. It elegantly and cleanly takes the most difficult concepts and clearly and simply lays them out. The use of graphic is the best I've encountered in a popular medicine book. Dr. Oesterling's devotion to his own father, who had prostate cancer, is remarkable. This gives any prostate cancer patient a sharp and clear edge with the best presentation of the most up to date material yet. Nice Job!

Nighttime Words and Images
This book is a lovely, well-done work. My only complaint (and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5) is that it apparently wasn't issued in hard cover and is only 8" x 8" in size. This greatly reduces the impression these excellent photographs and poems make. It really should've been issued in a more durable and larger size--like a coffee table book. Still, it's a beautiful collection of words and images.

A must have addition to the nocturnal's library collection
This book, which is roughly 8 inches square is a wonderful collection of night photography and selected poetry with night as it's subject matter. The photographs can stand on their own artistic merit, but the addition of the poetry makes a creative and enhancing compliment to the images. The images are sublime, moody and allow the viewer to belong momentarily in spaces that aren't normally accessible to the average person. Any producer of night photography should aspire to this level of quality and any lover of nocturnal photography needs this book in their collection.

Surgery Resident Review
This book is designed for surgical residents. Medical students should do well with a student oriented text and the little Surgical Recall.

Residents on the other hand will find this to be a useful review especially before the ABSITE.

This is what your memory needs!
This is one of the best investment in medical books that I have made. I am in 3rd year now and have accumulated heaps of COMPREHENSIVE books that I have only ever just flipped through. Since buying "Advanced Surgical Recall", I have used it every single time a topic pops up in my surgical term. It includes topics on General Surgery as well as Surgical Specialties, plus other useful background information. There is also some anatomy, with occasional drawings to emphasize. Admittedly, some of the questions are too advanced for me at this stage (I also love my "Surgical Recall" but that's another story, by the way the 2 books are complementary and in no way exclude the usefulness of the other), but the majority are just what I need! I anticipate I will find it completely relevant for my 4th year exam next year. The 2 column format with questions on the left and answers on the right is ideal for testing those neurons...and the bookmark that comes with the book is absolutely indispensable. Basically it emphasizes what you would need to know and not more. The only thing is...I wish there is a version with metric units, any references to fluid and electrolyte measurements are totally meaningless to me here is Australia. I will write them in I think. Of course you will still need a proper surgical text, admittedly I have written in a few additional points in the book that I thought were important from reading other texts. But I had my surgical exam just today and the use of this book in revision was just invaluable. Not to mention those times when you do not feel like even glancing at your big surgery text, or when you have about 10 minutes spare while waiting in the car or for the pasta to cook....just attempting a few questions will make you feel constructive! This book has started a craze in me to check out all the other books in the "Recall" series...oh dear looks like an expensive year for me!

I am thankful for a job well done
I am CEO of a company in Asia that provides technical support for medical equipment. I employ many "engineers" in several countries. While my team has a very solid grasp of the science side of engineering - on average they have been rather weak on the "art" side of technology support. It is safe to say that this is a global phenomenon. I needed a tool to help them understand the complexities of post production service and most importantly - customer satisfaction.

"AFTER THE SALE" says it all. I would like to formally thank the authors for writing the book that is saving my company a lot of time and money" - and keeping my customers satisfied.

I have not only purchased this book - but all of the other technical support books by the same author. A good use of my companies resources!

Brian de Francesca, CEO - Asia Bio Systems (360) brian@asiabio.com

AFTER THE SALE
Joe Patten & William Bleuel have succeeded in providing a quality book that packages the key functions, duties and deliverables in a single text. It is a must for new service managers and is written in a hands-on real world style that matches the needs of both new and experienced managers, whether it is to learn new techniques, improve their understanding of key elements, or review current practices for potential change. It focuses on the core processes within service with a strong attention to detail, quality and delivery. Most of all it is a text that has something for everyone and does not shy away from measurement or implementation issues. It's a great primer and there is no question readers will save a bit of "scar tissue" by applying the principles presented.

In addition this text, and others like it, are desparately needed in business schools. Customer service has too long been missing in undergraduate and graduate education. With the services industry becoming a focal point of our economy, Mr.Patton and Bleuel's text is very timely and it is encouraging to see a few of our institutions. recognize the need to incorporate this within their management programs.

Real nice for the horror/SF-fans
This is a book that collects the better stories of the immensly succesfull "Cry for Dawn" series by Joseph Michael Linsner, the serie that was the breakthrough for Linsner and the first Dawn-series. People who liked 'Dawn' must surely pick this up (also because the original issues are near impossible to find AND darn expensive if you do find them). I personally think it's not as good as the later six-part miniseries "Dawn" (later in TPB renamed as 'Lucifers halo') but that's not a negative point, it says more about the quality of the latter series. It's still very close though.

The stories within this trade aren't related to each other, there's no continuity. The only things they have in common is that the stories center around Dawn, the goddess of life and death. Tales with a lot of symbolism and surrealism in them. It's more a collection of loose stories which are especially suitable for the Fantasy/Horror lovers.

The Compilation of the Cry for Dawn series
This is great for any intellectual out there, its a compilation of the Cry for Dawn comic book series, which was writen in the end of the 80's, all black and white work, except for the cover (which has Dawn the character herself, who latter on becames a heroine in some of his comic book series) its very melancholic, somewhat depressing, very dark, but that goes with his style which is very gothic indeed, if u like gothic, you'll adore this, intelectual and with some good art work, I found it to be a classic comic book compilation, represents a side of the eighties all too well, for those who experienced the darker side of it, and for those who havent, you'll grasp some of it with this book.

The Burnished Gold of Youth
After the masterpieces had all been written Conrad began writing a purer kind of adventure story. These late books are interesting and though not masterpieces themselves there is something in each one that makes them well worth your while. The young man in Arrow of Gold has fallen under the allure of old Europe in the form of the lovely Spaniard Dona Rita (Conrads most complete and most attractive portrait of a woman) and finds himself involved in her schemes to smuggle guns to her countrymen from Marseilles. High adventure ensues, including a breathtaking boat chase, but every cause and every ideal is corruptible and Conrad with this book contrasts the heady ideals of youth with worldly experience and wisdom. In these last books(Rescue, Arrow of Gold, Rover) it feels as though Conrad felt he had already tackled his great themes so there is a calm in the writing of them that is very pleasing and one imagines he is enjoying the writing of them in his retired captains easy chair as much as we enjoy the reading of them. The arrow is a gold pin, a rich symbol, the fate of which must be left unknown to potential readers. The historical setting of 1870's Marseilles is one Conrad knew well as that is the port from which he set off to sea for the first time and the gun running episode as well as the boat(especially the boat)Conrad spoke of with great fondness in his memoirs.

A must to know about Conrad's youth and his maturity style.
The Arrow of Gold is a must for Conrad fans, as it is based on one of the most interesting and obscure periods of the Polish-English writer's life. Action happens in the 1870's in Marseilles, France, where a young and naif sailor, back from West Indies, is engaged by a couple of conspirators to smuggle guns and ammunition for the Carlist army, with the idea of putting King Carlos back in the throne of Spain. All this is almost exactly what happened to Conrad, all which is partially narrated in the "Tremolino" chapter of his beatiful book The Mirror of the Sea, as well as in the souvenir book entitled Some Reminiscences. The Arrow of Gold is a book of Conrad's maturity. It was not well received in his time and Conrad himself was not fully happy with it. But it is a deeply moving and funny novel, full of adventures, fascinating ladies, charming crooks, bizarre characters and sharp descritions of places and milieu. All this in a neat prose, now free from the philosophical statements or stylistic refinements that at times burden some of the works of the great Master. In summary, a rather forgotten book by the author of Lord Jim, Nostromo and so many masterpieces, which deserves to be "discovered" by old and new Conrad devotees.

A minor let down
A good catalogue of catalogues broad base book, but if you are usedto Konemann books for the same money it is not in the same league.

We are in debt that this period has finally been covered, so a steller effort. The details and research are flawless.

But come on,page 295 fig 102 Carlo Maratti "Triumph of Clemency" a milestone hit of this period by anyones standard, the size of a credit card, in very poor black and white, yet on page 172 we have a commode at least 4 by 4 in full color, in Sotheby auction catalogue format, this book is a catalogue of art objects not an Art book be very aware of the distinction. A lot of really good paintings are black and white, and small while high brow 18th century garage sale objects get full color press.(being a smart ass)
I mean didnt Chiari or Conca do some ceilings somewhere, break it into two books, go heavier into the painting and sculpture, enlarge, add, and color more pictures, do some full page details, put the damn furniture under the Home Depot section of another book, and cut down on all the text, we get the picture you are experts ,so can we get the picture.....thank you though it is a great book wonderful coverage.

I apologize a lot of time went into this book I think too many good cooks spoiled the broth, there are so many great paintings from that period we will never see. A great job Thanks for helping all of us get off the Rococo to Impressionist highway at the 18th Century Roman exit.

A SPLENDID TREASURE FOR AFICIONADOS AND SCHOLARS
Rome, forever beckoning, forever fascinating. And, as we're reminded in this landmark volume, Rome during the 18th century was the birthplace of countless art treasures. Such a plethora of richness was due, in large part, to wealthy travelers doing the Grand Tour who eagerly offered patronage, and the flourishing academic environment - the Accademia di San Luca, the French Academy, the Accademia dell' Arcadia.

Thus, a virtual mother lode of work in all media was produced, not only to be shipped to the opulent homes of the visiting aristocrats but to adorn the Eternal City's churches, palaces, fountains, piazzas, and gardens.

It was in this climate that artists such as Canova, Maratti, Piranesi, Baroni, David, and Fuseli flourished. Art In Rome presents some 500 glorious illustrations accompanied by edifying texts penned by some of the world's foremost scholars. It is a volume to savor, to treasure, and to enjoy over and over again.

We find Antonio Canova, perhaps best remembered for his reclining portrait figure of Pauline Borghese as the victorious Venus. Here, we are reintroduced to his skill in the qualities of classicism as shown in "Theseus with the Dead Minotaur."

Originally a stonemason, he turned to sculpture after moving to Venice in 1768. He was to become the most influential sculptor of the Neoclassical period.

There is Maratti (Carlo Maratta), the leading painter in Rome during the late 17th century, and Fuseli, a Swiss-born painter, draughtsman, and writer on art. who came to Italy where he became enthralled with the works of Michelangelo.

The list of artists represented is lengthy; the visual pleasures found in these splendid illustrations are many. Art In Rome captures much that has previously been given scant attention in the annals of cultural history.

Surprising Page Turner!
Okay, I know this isn't a suspense novel - but Joseph Bentz kept THIS reader turning the pages; I could hardly set the book down until I'd finished it! I believed these people. I was charmed by them and annoyed by them and anxious for them (I had a distinct desire to find Jackie and slap her!). It's a thoroughly engaging, fast read - and worth a few days' disruption from "regular life" while you give reading more time than usual!

A surprisingly enjoyable read.
I hadn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. Bentz's characters seem real, especially Hugh, the crusty old father whose illness is the hub of the story. The writing draws its power from a focus on unsentimental and believable characters reminiscent of so many people we know, too often even ourselves.

Not a good value but a good book!
A lot of what this book goes through is commonsense and common knowledge. Spend some time in the search engine or in an internet forum and you can get most of this information.

There is a lot of useful information though in one easy reference. However, I don't feel it's worth the price. I just feel cheated by the cost of this book for some reason.

So if you have some extra money or you are too lazy to look on the internet or your local library I would definitely recommend this book.

Basically, since I have the book, I can definitely make good use out of it. Would I buy it again though given a second chance? Definitely not.

A fairly good book on automotive detailing
The book covers the spectrum of auto detailing. Estimated times for each area of detailing are included (ie. detailing tires: 15 minutes per tire). Photos are in black and white and not all of the information is up-to-date. (The information on clearcoats is limited.) Helpful hints from professional detailers are also included.
