A great basic introduction
Great Introduction to Egyptian Hieroglyphs
This book is a wonderful introduction to the hieroglyphic writing of Ancient Egypt. It includes the alphabet, a few pictographs, in which direction to read the writing, vocabulary, sentences, numbers, etc. It also recommends some literature to further your knowledge. The best thing about this book is that it conveys the information in an easy to read manner, so that you don't have to be a scholar to understand.

Great animal book for kids
This is a fabulous book for children interested in animals. It is very detailed and has beautiful photos. Our young child refers to it as "The Great Big Book of Everything," as in the Disney Channel's "Stanley" cartoon. It really does seem to have everything inside.
A Great Buy!!
At first I was hesitant to order this book, with no picture of the cover on Amazon and no review to judge the book I took a chance and I am very glad I did. I bought this book as a bargain book, price-wise and content-wise I couldn't have made a better choice. I am very impressed and for me it has turned out to be a great buy since my kids love learning about animals.
This book is HUGE and heavy ,almost ten pounds! It concentrates on the four major groups: Mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. In-depth and comprehensive text with superb photographs and illustrations. Very good research material.

Truly Essential for the Middle Level Educator
I am the director of secondary school student teachers at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. I teach courses in Middle School Philosophy, Educational Psychology, and Teaching and Classroom Management. I have found this text to be an excellent resource when focusing on the curriculum, management, and developmental needs of the adolescent. I highly recommend it.
The Bible of middle school texts
Wiles and Bondi have been involved with middle school education from the beginning. This book is comprehensive and detailed in describing the middle school curriculum and how to implement it. Particular emphasis is given to the nature of the preadolescent learner and the implications for teachers.

An underappreciated theologian.
"Evocations of Grace" is a small sampling of Joseph Sittler's writings and thoughts on ecology, theology and ecumenism from 1954-75. Martin E. Marty (University of Chicago) wrote a very personal foreward describing Sittler as a truly gifted "theologian, rhetor, teacher, exemplar". Sittler was a pioneer in terms of speaking out on the environment from a Christian perspective. His description of nature (both organic and works of art, poetry, dance) was the "theatre of God's of grace". He made a landmark speech at the 1961 World Council of Churches on ecumenism. Sittler's writing is interesting and alive because he "insisted that his loose, unsystematic manner of exposition was appropriate to the dynamic and interrelated character of experience, and to the concrete particularity of occasions of grace". "Evocations" is a fantastic introduction to a bit of Sittler's "corpus of work"--how Joe would have loved to play with THAT phrase!
An unknown, underappreciated pioneer
Evocations of Grace is a compilation of some of the writings and musings of American Lutheran Joseph Sittler. This corpus of work spans from 1954 to 1975. Martin E. Marty gives a very personal glimpse of Sittler who attracted small groups of students who listened for any tidbit they could glean as he walked through Chicago's Hyde Park. Sittler wrote and spoke on the environment in the '50's. He influenced Teilhard de Chardin's work on the "cosmic Christ". In 1961 he made a landmark speech on ecumenism at the WCC meeting in New Delhi. Sittler's incarnational view of nature as "God's theatre of grace" shaped much of his theology on "creation-as-grace". Sittler is an interesting theologian to read because of his style of using poetry and literature (which he considered to be part of nature, along with art, dance, etc...) in his "loose, unsystematic manner of exposition". "Evocations" is a fine introduction to a theologian who will hopefully, one day, be recognized for the pioneering theologian he was.
Executive Guide to Grammar

If you want to master grammar, start here.
I am glad to add my five stars to this review, if only to assure you that Mr. Joseph is not overstating the quality of his own book! This workbook is fun to read, realistic about the use of language in the so-called Real World, and refreshingly, rigorously correct. Mr. Joseph explains complex ideas - and their importance - in a clear and lively way. As a teacher of business writing and a grammar maven, I sigh with envy to know that he, not I, wrote this terrific resource. I see from amazon.com that there is another book by Mr. Joseph and a collaborator which appears to be an updated version of this one. That book, ENGLISH 2000, might be a better bet for use in writing courses - especially if it discusses the use of grammar checkers.
Author's review.
Since 1984, "Executive Guide to Grammar" has been the standard English usage training manual of large corporations and government agencies; it is the most widely used book of its kind in the English-speaking world. As an educator, I believe firmly that any educator's job is to make learning as easy as possible. As a writer and admirer of good writing, I believe the expository writer's job is to tell as much as possible, as clearly and accurately as possible, in as litle reading as possible. I believe there is something terribly wrong with the "Here-it-is-if-you're good-enough" attitude displayed by so many educators and writers. If you have ever taken or considered taking an adult education class on any subject, or attended a professional seminar or workshop, you have probably said: "It will be worth the effort if I get a few good ideas." You should get more than that out of this study program. And that's what it is -- a self-paced study program, the same one taken by hundreds of thousands of professional men and women. Yes, it contains self-quizzes (with answer keys). The objective, after all, is not just to present useful information but to help you become a more skilled user of the English language, and that takes a bit of effort -- but not much. This is NOT a definitive treatise on grammar. You can find scores of those, many excellent, in any library or bookstore. Their trouble is they cover too much; the few most important ideas are made inaccessible, buried among pages and pages of details. Important and unimportant are treated alike, and the poor reader must decide for himself or herself what's important and what's merely nice to know. In this book those things have been decided for you. You should learn more, not less, as a result. I would add that the English language is a magnificent tool, the world's language, and using it well is a fun experience. I have tried to make mastering it a fun experience too. HERE'S WHAT SOME CRITICS HAVE SAID: "Joseph's grammar is approachable. His reasons for caretaking clear." -- Christian Science Monitor. "An attractive, informative, useful, and even entertaining Book." -- National Council of Teachers of English. "An invaluable reference. . .our review copy is going on our bookshelf between Webster and Roget." -- Training Magazine.

The most thoughtful professional development book I know of
I read this book for the first time in the late 1970's. Over the years I used it exentsively with managers and others who worked for me in a major multi-national corporation. It is the best resource that I know of for people to objectively access their qualities and abilities and to understand how these are essential for both business and personal growth. I have given away more than 100 copies over the years. I now use it as a resource for my clients in my management consulting practice. I regret that this fine book is no longer in print.
The value of understanding the executive
I read this book several years ago, lent it to a friend, and never got it back. I have been searching for years to find another copy. This text provides powerful insights into the mind of good executives. Why they are executives, what you will need to become one (if that is your ambition) and how to deal effectively with executives. The importance of emotional maturity, the difference between being bold (good) and being aggressive (not so good), the value of knowledge, and why personality, character, and integrity are so important to being an effective executive are all illustrated extremely well. This is by far the best book on management I have ever read and it has had a more lasting impact on my career than any other I have ever read. It is very unfortunate it is no longer in print. If you have a copy or are able to acquire one, consider yourself very fortunate. This book is based on the practical approach, the way people really interact, and therefore it has tremendous value. It is not a theoretical work

Very good introduction to Ex/Im from a businessman
Zodl's book was one of many Ex/Im books I've looked at. His book is a quick read and one can easily finish it in one sitting. He has enough detail to give you an excellent overview of ExIm and also plenty of guidelines and pointers to strong resources. With this book, you should have enough to take your business into ExIm without much difficulty. You will have to learn more, or course, but Zodl gives you enough information to seek the right team and expert advice (many times free expert advice) and ask the correct questions. He also covers complex topics like NVOCCs, Shipper Export Declaration Forms, and other things that one should look out for when getting into this type of business. He writes with authority, common sense, and an easy style. He gives very practical advise and easily digestable advice on legal issues with ExIm and also plenty of examples of important documents you must use in the process.
A book worth the money, but since it is relatively short (170 pages), I would suggest borrowing it from a library and reading it while taking notes in a small notebook. That way you'll remember what you've learned and have an organized way of accessing it later.
Really good. Makes a difficult subject clear.
This is very well written, and explains how things actually work in international business. It explains the terminology and how to do the documents, and where to get the documents done for you (third party providers that you can hire). The chapter on Getting Paid is especially useful. The chapter on Terms of Sale explains how to avoid a lot of mistakes you could make really easily.

Here's "The Skinny"
To borrow a catch phrase from this series of books, here's "The Skinny". Korch doesn't clutter up things with 15 million charts like the magazines. The book is broken up into sections, by position, and simply ranks the players with stats and insight. You also get advise on which players will suit different types of leagues (scoring vs. performance). Okay, okay...the 1999 edition mentioned nothing about Kurt Warner. But name one publication that predicted what would happen to him. I am no football guru but I've purchased this book 4 years running and I've never finished lower than 4th in my league. Now I can boast a championship as my team took it all in '99. This book is for every fantasy football franchise owner...EXCEPT the other guys in my league!
A must for any Fantasy Football owner

The authors introduce the basic steps to study, which include the following:
- learning the basic alphabet
- recognising the direction of writing
- learning special linguistic items (bilaterals, determinatives)
- pronunciation
- basic vocabulary
- beginning grammar and basic sentences
One note about pronunciation -- ancient Egyptian languages are 'dead' languages, and have been for thousands of years. Hence, no one really knows how words were pronounced. The best guesses scholars have are introduced here, but don't expect to be easily understood if you travel back in a time machine!
There are pictures of sites and artifacts in this book that show hieroglyphs in their original settings and forms.
This book is intended to whet the appetite, rather than provide a thorough education. The purpose the authors have is to motivate the reader on to more study, and for most, that will probably prove to be the case. To this end, they mention several sources, including the great 'Egyptian Grammar' by Gardiner, used in university courses in Egyptology.
