Excellent book for primary school students, 1st-3rd
This is an excellent book for primary school children. The character Deputy Dan is similiar to Amelia Bedelia in the Amelia Bedelia series by Peggy Parrish. Deputy Dan is a funny character which teaches children the double meaning of words in the English language. For example, after someone has knocked on the door, the sheriff tells Deputy Dan to answer the door. Deputy Dan goes to the door and says, "Hello, door!" I hope you enjoy Deputy Dan's silliness as much as my second grade class.

Deputy Dan's Review of Deputy Dan and the Bank Robbers
Hi This is a great book, I was a School Resource Officer for 3 years and the kids love to hear stories of my chosen career , so, i tell them it is similar to the book because we have to do what the Sheriff says and it is a lesson in following instructions even in school as a student.

Deputy Dan and The Bank Robbers
We love this book! The story is very simple to follow and is very funny. Deputy Dan is comparible to Amelia Bedelia books. The sheriff will give deputy Dan an order and deputy Dan follows it to the letter. Like when he tells him to pick up his horse and go after the bank robbers. Deputy Dan knows he can not pick up his horse, it is too heavy, but he always follows orders so he gets a crane to pick up his horse. We read this story aloud to the kids and we all giggle at the antics of deputy Dan. I highly recommend this book to all families. It is a joy.

A question from the autour
Dear Sirs I do not know if I can use this part as a tool for contacting the autour or not; however please excuse me if I have not used it properly: I am a student of epidemiology, and presently we are studying the following book: The Design and Analysis of Clinical Experiments; Joseph L. Fleiss; John Wiley & Sons; 1986. But on page 67 it seems that there is some misunderstandings: When we do a log transformation, in fact we are changing (or shifting) the previous distribution to a normal distribution. Without any doubts in this transformation the means of our previous distributions do not transfer to the means of the new distributions! In fact these are the medians of the previous distributions which are transferred to the place of the means of new distributions (of course if we presume that the new distributions are almost perfectly normal) and by finding the confidence interval of the difference of the means of new distributions (lambda1 - lambda2) we are finding the CI of ratio Median1/Median2. In this way it seems reasonable that the formula 3.25 be changed to Median1/ Median2. It would be very kind of you if you help me in this problem!

With best regards Dr. Shahrokh Izadi

now a classic and still a great reference
This book was first published in 1986. As Fleiss states in his preface, the intention is to fill a gap in the standard texts on experimental designs by emphasizing and illustrating those that are useful in clinical studies. This book was clearly marketed for the rapidly growing and highly regulated pharmaceutical industry. In addition to the classic experimental designs, Fleiss covers cross-over designs and repeated measure designs that are important in clinical trials. He writes clearly and deals with the important issues in clinical trials including potential biases, blinding, randomized controls, multiple comparisons and repeated measures. The book starts off with a chapter that emphasizes the effect of measurement error and also provides some simple experiments on reliability of measurements.

There is a wealth of methods included, many different designs and various parametric and nonparametric analysis techniques. It is aimed at biostatisticians in the pharmaceutical industry and the medical research field. The book is very much suited for an advanced undergraduate or graduate level course for students majoring in statistics or biostatistics. The level of mathematics is high but not excessively used. Mathematical results on sample size determination are deferred to an appendix.

The Wiley editors choose only successful books to be included in their Classics Library series. The intent of the Classics series is to take popular books by distinguished authors and create a paperback edition that may be more affordable than the hardcovered edition still in print. It is not a revision of the book. This book entered the Classics series in 1999.

It is a great reference source and I plan to consult it a great deal in the future. The only drawback to it that I see is that it is not up to date. The last 15 years has seen many advances in group sequential methods, Bayesian designs and longitudinal data analysis that this text misses. So Fleiss' book is not one stop shopping for a clinical biostatistician but it does offer a lot and presents it eloquently.

With regard to reviewer Izadi's comments on Amazon, I think the appropriate way to ask this question is really to write the author. Since it is here in print for the readers, I will attempt a reply. I think there is a misinterpretation of the terminology. When Fleiss refers to mean logarithms he is not referring to the population means on the log scale but rather the logarithm of the population mean on the original scale. With the latter interpretation equation 3.25 makes perfect sense. It is the former interpretation of the parameters that the reviewers point addresses. The importance in the example is to demonstrate the lack of robustness of t or F tests to non-normal (e.g. lognormal) data and to show that tests and confidence intervals can still be accomplished using the normal theory after the transformation. The key point is that it is the ratio of the parameters that is transformed into differences of the log of the parameters.

A must for biostatisticians
This is the standard text on this subject. Recommend you have at least a Master's degree in statistics to take full advantage of this book. This book is too technical for non-statisticians, although they may get some useful infomation from the non-statistical discussions.

Dillinger: A Short and Violent Life
An excellent biography on John Dillinger. The authors did their homework well! The book features the outlaw's life from beginning to end and it would be an wonderful edition to any Dillinger reader's book collection.

Dillinger : A Short and Violent Life
Dillinger : A Short and Violent Life by Robert Cromie and the late Joseph Pinkston is genuinely the most accurate book ever written on the life of John Dillinger. This book gives a detailed account of Dillinger's early years with his family leading up to his bank robbing criminal career, amazing escapes and his execution by Federal Agents on July 22, 1934 in a dark Chicago alley. I give this book with five stars because of it's accuracy. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning the true facts surrounding Dillinger's life as the most wanted man in America.

Must Reading
This is the best of all Dillinger biographies. Forget the speculative fiction of Jay Robert Nash. From birth to violent death, this is the most detailed and accurate account of John Dillinger's life and crimes. The research for this book was done by the late, great Joe Pinkston, a wonderful man and scholar who had researched Dillinger and collected artifacts on America's only real Public Enemy Number One since his own childhood in the '30's, eventually turning his lifelong fascination into the John Dillinger Historical Museum formerly located at Nashville, Indiana. Only slightly marred by the lack of source notes or index, this book is still a handy reference work, the proper beginning for any student of Dillinger and a priceless addition to any crime library.

A Complete Book
After you finish this book you will swear that he did not also write his first great book The Berkut. This book is one that you need a lot of coffee and bright lights on to stay as attentive as you need to be (and want to be) to grasp the many sub plots and subtitle twists. This book is not a fast paced thriller, but a rather slow moving heavy book that you really can sink your teeth into to. This book is not heading to the movie screen any time soon due to its complexity. I think of his writing this, it is what Clancy would be like if he had a Masters in English Lit from Yale. If you are looking for this type of book then you should buy this book, if you are looking for something lighter then many Higgins is for you.

A continuation of The Berkut; excellent
It has been many years since reading this pair of books. Incredible how such a talented author is hidden away with his masterpieces out of print. The characters in both The Berkut and The Domino Conspiracy are unique and unforgetable. After 12 years I hope he will allow his followers another opportunity to escape into his rich style of storytelling. Thank you Mr Heywood. I only wish I had hard cover editions and could remember who I loaned the paperbacks to.

What a great author! Don't know why people overlooked so far
This is a most talented writer who was unluckily overlooked by most readers since his research direction and subjects both were too truly European or Russian. His BURKU was a rare treat of tour-de-force that really shook me and touched me deeply, and this one was no exception, very professionally prepared and presented with wonderful writing, the scenario and plots, like BURKU, really caused me to rethink the possibilty of reality and made me wonder, IS IT POSSIBLE? May be it's just like what Heywood portrayed...? I'm trying very hard to look for his TAXI DANCER now.

Emotional roller coaster
This book as with " A White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation " pack a lot of emotional impact. This book defines what a leader of men, such as Marines, should do. He "must always make a decision, right or wrong but must make a decision." A must read particularly in light of 9/11/01!

The Title Says It All
It warms my heart to know there is still some good in the world. This is a great book that should be shared with your whole family. Thank God we have people who value Duty, Honor,Country!

Timely: In light of current events
A Heart warming story about good friends and their interrelationships, set in a background that is historically accurate. The story-line is timely in lieu of the 9/11 tragedy. Also,It is the sequel to 'A White Sport Coat and A Pink Carnation.'

Excellent resoure for H.S. Grammar Instruction
Blumenthal's English 2000, 2600, and 3200 series are comprehsive and fast paced. My high school english students actually enjoy studying grammar using these books. All three texts give the student a thorough, practical knowledge of English usage and grammar.

English 2600
I have used an older version of this book for years. It takes a subject and explains it in the most simple form, and gradually moves to a more advanced level so that the reader fully comprehends the subject matter. The format for the book is unique from any other book that I have used. This is without a doubt the best book that I have ever used for students who need English, grammar, and sentence structure starting at the basic level.

Teaching English as a Second Language
As a teacher in Japan, for students who have a fairly large vocabulary, this is an excellent book. Sometimes we need to go to the dictionary to learn a new word, but the explainations of why and how these elements are used is very helpful. My students feel like winners when they complete a chapter. However, I am using the older edition without the writing application from my own highschool days.

An Excellent, Although Incomplete, Source On MLA
This Review refers to the paperback edition of The Essentials of MLA Style: A Guide to the System of Documentation Recommended by the MLA for Writers of Research Papers, by Joseph F. Trimmer.

Trimmer's book is one pertaining to the proper way of citing sources via the MLA standards. There are thorough examples and explanatory details allowing the user to easily format their work according to the accepted standards. The Essentials of MLA Style demonstrates each citation and works cited statement empirically, and even contains a correctly formatted essay on recycling on which the proper ways of in text citing are pointed out. An APA style section is also contained in the back of the book.

The work provides plenty of examples and displays a good number of MLA procedures. However, it does not properly go into internet or photographic source work. Otherwise, it displays a good amount of the proper form of MLA style documentation.

The literary style presents the topic in a clear and concise manner, creating a smooth sentence structure and professional air about it. The author does not stray from the topic, but overuses certain words at times.

The Essentials of MLA Style is a highly recommended source for anyone interested in composing a paper through that particular style, or anyone merely interested in how the style is used. Overall, Trimmer provides an excellent reference for those wishing to write research papers using the MLA form of documentation.

CONCISE and easy to use MLA how-to book
Bought for my Kidlet, she's found it a wonderful guidebook to writing MLA style papers. We looked at the full-version (over 200 pages) and it was, quite frankly, overwhelming.

This one though, we have found to have all the information she requires to write decent papers for her college professors. Thus far, all A's too! I have recommended it to my nieces because of the easy to use format. The index is thorough and the examples (profuse) make following the format SIMPLE.

AWESOME!
This book really helped me write an excellent paper. Everyone should get this book because it is useful until your learning days are over. This book really helped me a lot.

Slam Dunk
Really an excellent review. I am in the end of my second year of residency and I find this an essential reference when I am in the elevator, or at a lecture, or between patients. It has very high yield, concise information about the topics tested and asked about most frequently. While this is not a substitute for the larger review texts, I found it an essential companion for me to review high yield topics. I plan to use this in studying for the intraining next year. It is a concise review that one could do in a week and tremendously improve their score.

Wonderful review for medical students and residents
This "book" is a wonderulf resource for all medical students and orthopaedic surgery residents. It's a must-read for anyone who wants to ace the boards or look good in front of their peers!

The best for OITE review
This PDA review is concise and high yield. Unlike other review books, these facts are sure to show up on the yearly in-training as well as the Board examination. I used it this past year and felt that it gave me an edge on 20-30 extra questions I would have gotten wrong. Definitely useful for residents, students and all those preparing for the boards.

What next?
Maybe we can get a service station attendant to write amusing anecdotes about the blunders of people trying to pump their own gas. Or a compendium of sulphur jokes as told by chemical engineers. Yeah, that would be interesting, too!

I have found enlightenment!
I feel so elated and free after reading this book. I now understand how completely stupid I sound when I ask a tech a simple question.

Why, oh why didn't I do us both a favor and call from my 2nd phone line??? I will NEVER pester a tech again! In fact, I'm cancelling my internet service, selling all my possessions, and moving into a dank, stale pit somewhere in the sewers of Bogata. It's the only place in the world where sub-human ignorant scum like myself belong.

Joseph Zeff is a God! I am eternally humbled by his Windows 3.1 & DOS expertise! All hail Zeff! Zeff! Zeff!

This stuff rocks!!!
(. . .) This guy is dead on. We need more Windows 3.1 diual boot Linux users who do all of their good stuff in DOS!!! This man is a technical genius and I shall refer to his manuscript whenever my Internet breaks.

Lovely pictures,beautiful words...
The late Joseph O'connell was a master sculptor, craftsman andartist, whose main work, it appears was liturgical.thereby consigning him to a lesser place among artists in this era. Too bad,for his work leaps off the page, full of life and mirth, celebration and deep pathos. He seemed to understand suffering in a way that was not self-indulgent,and portrayed it in stone, magnificently. He did hands very well, touching, probing holding caressing, and for me they seem to hold the key to some of his works. My only complaint is that this book is quite expensive, though handsomely done.Funny when reading this I felt more comfortable listening to Count Basie and Louis Armstrong then Ambrosian chant or William Byrd. Perhaps that too, is a tribute to this fine, wonderful artist.

Joe
Joe O'Connell was a freelance sculptor and carver in central Minnesota who made a life out of wood and stone, carving for churches mainly, and his work is quite a wonder to behold. This book is the most complete so far and includes some fine photos, but of course O'Connell work encountered in the real world ---- the crucifixes, the BVMs, the marvellous carvings in which he represents Ellington and Fats Waller and Louis Armstrong as angels ---- the real thing is even more astonishing. He was a folk artist and a fine artist and the book is an homage to him.

My Thoughts on My Father's Work
My father was an incredible sculptor. He lived his life to create the work you see in this book. I am honored by all that was written about him and I am thrilled to see this book put together with such care.
