Electronic Circuit Guidebook, Vol 3: OP Amps
Published in Hardcover by Delmar Learning (01 August, 1997)
Author: Joseph J. Carr
Amazon base price: $33.95
Average review score:

A good beginner's book but full of errors.
This is both a good book and a bad book for beginners on the subject of op amps. It's a good book because it presents the basics of op amp circuitry in a concise, straight forward manner without getting bogged down in a lot of theory and mathamatics, and it is well organized. However, it is a bad book because it is full of errors which even a moderately experienced reader might spot but which may confuse someone new to op amps. Errors like incompreshesible sentences, errors in equations, equation variables that don't match the circuit diagrams, missing figures, and wrong figures. Someone, probably non-technical, did a lousy job of proofreading.

I would not recommend this book to learn op amps. And if you can spot the mistakes, you already know op amps and you don't need this book either.

Good book for beginner, but full of typos
Joe Carr has a very clear writing style and illustrates all concepts with simple circuits. His general approach is that of an electronics technologist educating a hobbyist or technician. He does a great job at this, but unfortunately devotes no effort to proof-reading. This third book in the series is still flawed by numerous mismatches between text and schematics, improper symbols, etc. This will be very frustrating for the novice and obscures the points involved. Mr. Carr obviously cares little for his own work, since he has not moved to correct these glaring errors in this series.

The Enduring Vision : A History of the American People, 1890s-Present

Interesting and factual, but essentially useless for study
I am currently using this textbook for my AP United States History class. While it is definetly factual and a good general knowledge book for people interested in History, it's difficult to study from. The wording is not easy and often gets extremely flowery. Also, the text focuses on specific incidences and doesn't cover concepts very deeply, if at all. I often find that I'm left to draw my own conclusions from it and then I have to go to other sources for the information I need for tests.

Thuroughly written, informative, but confusing
This book provides a complete description of US History. All the importaint facts are covered in the book, but not any more in depth than a paragraph or two on a subject. Occasionally, though, the text does become difficult to follow. Topics aren't presented cronoligically, but instead are grouped together in a approximate time span. IE.. The culture of the United Stated in the 1860s and 1870s was discussed before there was any mention at all about the Civil War. However, the high level of knowledge that can be gained by treading this book in its straight forward approach far outweigh any problems that may be encountered.

Escape from Purgatory: Something New for Roman Catholics and Those Who Care about Them

This book was horrible and full of lies.
This book was a discrace to theology, literature, truth, and everything that is Good. It portrays huge amounts of lies, misinterpretations, and falsities of the Catholic Faith. When you get down to REAL theology (which is not found in this book) you will see that Catholicism is the pillar and ground of the truth (1 Tim 3:15), not Protestantism. Being a former Protestant, I can assure you that I know of the Proitestant teachings (mainly Sola Scriptura and Sola Fide) and know that they are both false. James 2:24, 2 Thessalonians 2:15.

PLEASE READ THIS BOOK
I am a former Catholic, surrounded by Catholic family and friends. I never could quite figure out what and how to evangelize to them... I really never really knew (and I believe most Catholics DON'T) Catholic Theology. I learned so much and I was very impressed with the sensitivity and kindness with which the author wrote. I wish all my Catholic friends would read this. I've even given a few copies to some. Most don't want to hear or think about questioning their Religion. It is painful to admit your life and your ancestors' all revolved around heretical tradition and ANTI-Biblical manmade laws (chains) from which Jesus came to free us! "Escape" is a revealing yet gentle eye opener for anyone.

Everyday Lakota an English-Sioux Dictionary for Beginners

Wished I could review, but right now I give a -0-.
I wish I could give a review, but I have been waiting for this book since December 2002.

Very good English-Lakota Dictionary.
This dictionary concentrates on commonly used words. It is the best English-Lakota dictionary I've read. It's biggest weakness for someone trying to communicate is it has no Lakota-English section. I've bought many of these and give them away to friends trying to learn the language.

The Fighting Fisherman: The Life of Yvon Durelle
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (May, 1981)
Author: Raymond Joseph Fraser
Amazon base price: $13.95
Average review score:

Our champion
I have read the book on Yvon Durelle at least several times since it was first published. As a 11 year old kid growing up in a small fishing village in Nova Scotia during the time Yvon was at the height of his career, he will never know the impact he made on our daily lives. He was one of us, the fighting fisherman. The author could of spent more time on how the Durelle family lived during this period. The 40's and 50's were difficult times in the Maritimes to say the least. The book should of portrayed the struggle of Yvon's career more. For someone from a small fishing village in New Brunswick to fight the greatest light heavy weight Champion of all time, and almost K.O, is the greatest achievement reached by any Canadian boxer ever. I fully understand that the author in order to write the full story has to write the negetive as well positive side to ones biography. Today we have a tendency to get caught up in the sensational, if the author would of stayed more with the grassroots issues of the day, such as family, the struggle to build a career in a very difficult business, more in depth description of his earlier fights, it would have been a better read. I had the chance to meet Mr. Durelle and his wife 12 years ago. They are very gracious hosts and I look forward to visiting their boxing museum someday in the near future.

ok reading
Hi - this book is one I read a few years ago and again recently. I feel it was an honest attempt to relate the story of Yvon - but I do feel that more of it should have dealt with the challenges he faced in his boxing career - and less to depict his personality - or the way the author perceived him. The book would have been more intriguing if the reader could 'see' the lifestyle and era that Yvon lived through - for example look at the popularity of Frank McCourt's books - T'is and Angela's Ashes - the style used there would be better used in depicting the story of Yvon - and his wife and kids too. I was a little dissapointed in the sensationalism of negative things in Yvon's life rather than portraying the 'whole picture". The culture, lifestyle, and sense of family and pride is not shown as well as it should be.

The Genius of China: 3000 Years of Science, Discovery and Invention
Published in Paperback by Touchstone Books (January, 1989)
Authors: Robert K. G. Temple and Joseph Needham
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Pretty but totally unreliable
The sole virtue of this volume lies in its attractive illustrations. It is stuffed to overflowing with errors concerning well-known facts of science, technology, and European scientific and technological history. I do not know enough about Chinese history to assess its reliability in those respects, but based on his performance in other respects, I would not trust anything this author has to say on any subject whatever, absent independent verification.

How the Chinese invented it all!
Printing, Compasses, and Gunpowder were the key inventions that enabled the renaissance. The Chinese invented these and much more. This book is a distillation of Professor Joseph Needham's massive 13 volume "Science and Civilisation in China." It is a fascinating science history.

Glam Scam: Successfully Avoiding the Casting Couch and Other Talent and Modeling Scams

OBVIOUS AND SENSATIONALISTIC
Of course it is essential to be informed about this and any industry in which one plans to become involved. But this book is intended to be sensational, to scare poor parents into fearing for their daughter's (or son's) safety and psychological health. All good parents already fear this. Some step-by-step instruction and real information on how to find your place in the industry, how to deal with agents and clients and sensible advice on communicating effectively with your teenager (who wants to model) would be far more helpful

The Most Important Book Written On The Industry
MUST HAVE This book is crucial for your collection! The Glam Scam should be on every single bookshelf, regardless of which aspect of the industry you work in.

Enough praise cannot be given for the value... the back blurbs are not hype -- this is the most important book to read for anyone even considering a career in the Entertainment Industry.

Exceptionally well organized, and packed with informative content... Mr Joseph is well spoken as he not only covers the monetary scams, but also those of a more dangerous nature.

If you don't believe the praise, visit your local library and read just the first few pages -- I can guarantee you'll be racing to pick up your own copy... and when done, you'll feel grateful you did as well. After years in the industry, I continue to praise this work, and refer to it often when guiding others in the industry...

This book is a definite Must Have on very single bookshelf...

The Global Business Game: A Simulation in Strategic Management and International Business
Published in Paperback by South-Western College Pub (12 July, 2002)
Author: Joseph A. Wolfe
Amazon base price: $46.95
Average review score:

Avoid at all costs!
As a project in one of my MBA classes, we had to make 8 decisions in this "simulation" game. Over the semester, I have grown to hate the game and the book. The biggest problem with the game is that it is too rigid and does not mirror real life. The problem with the book itself is that it does not contain any information to assist you in making decision. There are also some misprints in the book as well. Avoid this book if you can, and if you can't, I wish you the best of luck!

You must understand this to use it!
I must disagree with the other reviewer! I use this simulation in my class and it works very well. However, it isn't simple and the base documentation isn't the best. The software is quite robust. The complexity of the simulation means this isn't just a game in which you can casually drop in some figures and see what happens - each team needs to spend at least 8 hours preparing and then about 2 hours deciding each set of moves! The reward is in simulation that faithfully reproduces and simplifies competitive and global forces.

NOTE - this software is totally useless to you unless it is offered as part of a class. You need at lest three teams AND the special administrator software only available to teaching professionals.

The Great Haydn Quartets: Their Interpretation
Published in Hardcover by George Braziller (October, 1986)
Author: Hans Keller
Amazon base price: $15.75
List price: $22.50 (that's 30% off!)
Average review score:

Virtually worthless for the listener
Perhaps if you are a performer there might be something worthwhile in this book. But as a guide to listening to and comprehending the Haydn quartets, this book is virtually worthless. Once you get past the author's self-congratulatory breast-beating and his unsupported opinions about how few ensembles can play these pieces well (always excepting, of course, ensembles trained by the author), there's precious little left.

One of the world's great musical books--do buy it !
As a professional violinist with the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields I can assure you that an enormous amount of wisdom, insight and brilliant musical writing is crammed into this book. If you want to know what insightful musical writing can be buy this tome!

A Guide to Healing the Family Tree
Published in Paperback by Queenship Pub Co (April, 1997)
Authors: Kenneth McAll and Albert Joseph Mary Shamon
Amazon base price: $8.95
Average review score:

Save your money!!
Poorly written, narrow-minded and vague, this book is a total waste of paper. Let me sum it up in one sentence: Find something wrong with you, blame your ancestors, pray to God for forgiveness for stuff you didn't do, and you're as good as cured. I have a feeling a little silver is also expected to cross the palm of the religious representative who is acting as your "hotline to God." Ridiculous.

a must companion to Healing The Family Tree
This book provides an explanation of what areas or sickness may be affected by what aspects of the past in the 'family tree' and makes a useful companion to its predecessor. Anyone engaged in counseling should have both books at hand. Symptoms may point directly to specific incidents either in the persons life or the life of another family member, past or present and will give direction as to how and what needs to be healed
