Top of the Line for Basic Medical Providers
Prehospital emgergency care is the best book that I have read for EMT-B level care providers. I live in Ontario, Canada, where we do not have EMT's. We have paramedics and first responders. This book is a great first book for those getting into the emergency medicine profession. It covers the basics of the basics very well and very thoroughly. The pictures are clear and easy to understand and the language isn't too complicated to understand.
We used a version of this book for medical training in the fire service and it has proven itself to be a very practical and efficient learning tool. There are expanded areas in cetain chapters where the book goes above and beyond the level of knowledge that EMT-B level providers will need to know. It's always good to know more than you need to and this book helps tremendously with that. Those intending on pursuing their careers into more advanced paramedicine should consider making this book the foundation to their knowledge.

The CD that comes along with it is a valuable resource that assists with learning. As well as the web site that is given in the book can be used as a study guide. This is a must for all responders to medical incidents. This is the core information that all emergency providers really need to know because of the fact that it doesn't take that long to learn and that just a little knowledge can go a long way to save somebody's life. Even police officers should have a copy of this in their library and review it often.

Street Corner University
Brady - Prehospital Emergency Care, I have my own preference, I always read. This is the best Prentice Hall Product and have sixth edition. Text contains clear, step-by-step to education, picture or diagram is explanations with understandable material that is comprehensive, stimulating, and challenging enough to prepare , real on-the-job situations and attractive price.

Best-selling. It¡¦s because this book is not only suitable for EMT ¡V Basic. It¡¦s suitable for all. People want to study in any time, any elsewhere of life support. This book was considered the all resource for medical and trauma emergencies.

In this book train students to do thorough patient assessment. Because patient assessment is very important, use limit resource to save unlimit life. I think this book is leadership on this area. And expanded to include even more full-color art and photos of procedures and updated equipment, as well as new flowcharts illustrating assessment and care steps for various emergency situations. The authors also bring students up to date on new protocols that summarize cardiac arrest, pediatric emergencies, as well as many other crisis conditions. NEW twenty-six new assessment flowcharts illustrate care steps for breathing difficulty, cardiac compromise, diabetic emergencies, bleeding and shock, burns, head injuries, newborn resuscitation, and many more. NEW assessment protocols summarize emergency care for cardiac arrest, stroke, allergic reaction, near-drowning, abdominal injuries, and pediatric emergencies, among others. In-depth patient assessment-based approach presented in a clear, logical format. Case studies integrated throughout the text. Comprehensive, step-by-step coverage meets and exceeds the requirements of the D.O.T. EMT-B curriculum. NEW¡XNew, reader-friendly design highlights key information. Basic Life Support review and National Registry Skill Sheets are included. BLS review helps students recall material that should previously have been covered. National Registry Review Sheets help students prepare for the test they must pass to be certified EMT-B's.

The best innovative is provide weblinks with interactive education. Contains chapter-by-chapter review quizzes, message boards, chat rooms, and additional student and instructor resources. And ¡§Web Watch¡¨ icons throughout the text direct students to current websites that offer further discussion of chapter topics. I believe that is great imporve!

Preschool in Three Cultures

Groundbreaking video ethnography
Tobin's book has been around for a number of years now. Nevertheless, it continues to set the standard in the creation of video ethnography. Graduate students across the nation use this book for its brilliant methodology and for his insightful readings of culture.

Idiosyncratic and utterly fascinating
Tobin et al compare preschools in Japan, the US and China in a fascinating cross-cultural study. What makes this study so compelling is that you hear not only the authors' interpretations of what they see, but also the opinions of the teachers, administrators and the parents OF ALL THREE CULTURES. By having parents, teachers and administrators watch video tapes of the preschools in the non-native country, you get an eye-opening assesment of what each preschool is trying to do in its culture and how it compares with what other preschools accomplish. I have my daughter enrolled in a Japanese preschool, and the opnions and analysis on what Japanese preschools are like is dead-on, as is the analysis of the American preschool.

The real eye-opener for those readers not familiar with preschools in Japan is how chaotic, loosely-structured, and easy-going they are. The 30-1 child-teacher ratio makes chaos inevitable, but it forces the kids to learn how to deal with each other, rather than an authority figure. Contrasted to the American pre-school style, where the teacher runs the show, enforces the rules and molds the kids to act in a manner that the teacher/school has decided is appropriate, Japanese kids actually get more practice resolving conflicts and taking responsibility for problem-solving.

This is actually one study that is fun to read, too! Highly recommended.

President John Fitzgerald Kennedy's Grand and Global Alliance

New view on JFK, great collection of speeches
One of the only JFK books to concentrate on his foreign policy ideas. The preface starts with the editor saying his "memory has been poorly served." This is quite true, and this book reminds us that President Kennedy was a person with great vision, intelligence, and a firm grasp of how to confront the threats of the nuclear age responsibly.

Pretty Boy Dead

Sexier Than Brandstetter, Darn Near as Good
I wouldn't dream of reviewing Mr. Hansen, since he's an idol of mine, but I will add this note: From a Gay point of view, 'Pretty Boy Dead' is a lot sexier than the Dave Brandstetter books the author is justly famous for. It's hardly X-rated, so non-Gay readers will enjoy it too, but it is more explicit; to me that made it surprising, fun, even hot, since I came to this book after discovering 'A Smile in His Lifetime' and then the Brandstetter series. 'Pretty Boy' is clearly a transition book for the author; he begins to feel his power here, he knows he's on the right track. Readers who love Brandstetter but haven't read this one, buy it. Enjoy it. Devour it. When you're done you'll appreciate even more one of the great mystery writers of all time. You'll be ready to click on All Books by Joseph Hansen, because his non-mysteries are quiet works of art.

HANSEN IS, AS HANSEN DOES.
I love this book. Originally published as KNOWN HOMOSEXUAL, then STRANGER TO HIMSELF, PRETTY BOY DEAD was Hansen's first mystery novel, written under the pseudonym of James Colton. This is everything a mystery novel should be.

Briefly, this is the story of Steve who is young, bright and black. Steve's family has all but disowned him, in part due to his marriage (now cracking apart), and partly due to a play Steve wrote. With Steve's future as a playwright indefinitely on hold, Steve has only his love -- Coy Randol -- to keep him warm (which is the equivilent of saying the only good thing is one's life is one's addiction to heroin). Then Coy gets his cute little self murdered, and Steve is the main suspect.

This might sound a little dreary, but it's not. For one thing the plot is a classic, and the characters are believable and fresh, not those painfully familiar stereotypes that people most mystery novels (Hansen is like the zen master of characterization: a sentence or two and you swear you know this person). For another thing, PRETTY BOY DEAD is hypnotic, baked in that old Angeleno atmosphere, that Chandleresque ambiance. Every detail--well, I just wish everybody in this genre wrote this marvellously.

PLEASE KEEP THIS BOOK IN PRINT

A great tool for independent study.
I use this text for an online college algebra course and find it to be an excellent teaching tool. This text is designed so that an individual works through a topic step by step, with checks for understanding at each step. The topics are reinforced by practice problems. The format is not like a standard text, so it takes some adjustment in study habits, but the adjustment is well worth it!

As we advance into the 21st century, women and consumers of color will collectively have enough economic clout to influence mainstream advertising. The question is when and how? Sounds like a great idea for a brand...

Another great resource from Ciarrocchi and Wicks
This book is a wealth of information for counselors who work with clergy, because of the occupational stresses and overwork unique to those in religious professions. I found their discussion of clergy transference and isolation issues particularly helpful. The style of writing is highly informative but the book is also an interesting and engaging read.

Required reading
This is a must for any mental health professional who treats clergy and religious. Ciarrocchi and Wicks approach this population by emphasizing the cultural factors that need to be considered with this unique group of individuals who devote their life to ministry to others. They provide a framework to understand the unique needs of this population and offer many worthwhile suggestions regarding treatment approaches. It is clear that both men have the experience of working with this population.

Qualitative Research Design : An Interactive Approach

Average review score:

Maxwell provides roadmap
Having acquired a veritable library of qualitative methods books and journal articles, I still felt like I was floundering. This book gave me not only a new and more valuable way of thinking about what I was doing, but a step-by-step action guide, practical, practicable, and with a depth (both explicated and in specific references) that makes me much more confident about eventual orals. Short and extremely sweet!

Buy this book!
I and several of my compatriots found this text to be a practical island in an overwhelming and contradictory sea of theory. It's short, eminently readable, and especially useful for those struggling to write a qualitative dissertation proposal. Maxwell's liberating revision of the usual ponderous "lit review" to the actually applicable "research context" is in itself worth the purchase price.

Rational Points on Elliptic Curves (Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics)

Full of useful information and a great guide to intuition
The authors do a fantastic job of introducing elliptic curves for individuals and students interested in this area. Because of the importance of elliptic curves to cryptography, in integrable models in statistical mechanics, in superstring theory in physics, in mirror symmetry in algebraic geometry, in mechanics in the solution of the spinning top, and even in financial engineering, this book will be useful in building intuition about these interesting objects. Be careful in reading this book though...the theory of elliptic curves is beautiful and addicting, and you will want no doubt to read more about them after finishing it. There are two other books by Silverman that will alleviate the monkey on your back for more knowledge about elliptic curves. Happy reading......

Excellent Introduction to Elliptic Curves
This wonderful book is an excellent introduction to elliptic curves over the rational numbers. It is self-contained and easily accessible, but still takes the reader quite far, thus giving an undergraduate reader some exciting glimpes of deeper mathematics. This book is ideally suited as a text book for an undergraduate course (I have myself enjoyed it as a course), but is written in a lively style that also makes it fun to read on one's own. It covers such topics as the Nagell-Lutz Theorem, Mordell's Theorem over rational numbers, elliptic curves over finite fields and reduction modulo p, Thue's Theorem and diophantine approximation, and even an introduction to complex multiplication. An appendix provides the reader with a basic background on projective geometry. This book is a must for any student wanting to see beyond the ordinary coursework, and at the same time provides a natural stepping stone to a more advanced treatment of the subject, such as "The Arithmetic of Elliptic Curves", also by Silverman, which has become pretty much the standard text on the subject.
