De Maistre penetrated as never before - brilliant work
Hats off to Dr. Bradley, whose interpretive, integrative, and deductive abilities are obviously surging, at this early point in his career. Never before have I read anything about De Maistre that pierced so painfully, to the point of seeing his logic as it applies to us all. It made me proud, and ashamed. Compelling.

Tour Guide Available for Trip "To Hell and Back"
Joseph Gallagher, a retired Catholic priest and professor, who has taught at such venerable institutions as John Hopkins, Notre Dame, Loyola, and Oxford presents on an easy-to-understand guide through the intricacies of Dante's imaginative work. Written in a conversational style that anyone can understand, this expert tutor of many students for over 50 years explains each of the characters canto by canto. The outline at the beginning is a great help. While it is not as analytical as that of Erich Auerbach's "Mimesis", this book is a valuable addition. It should prove indispensable for those who need a companion guide; the homeschooler's library should contain this erudite explanation.

Moisture Control Handbook: Principles and Practices for Residential and Small Commercial Buildings
Published in Hardcover by Van Nostrand Reinhold (June, 1993)
Authors: Joseph Lstiburek and John Carmody
Amazon base price: $52.95
Used price: $352.96
Average review score:

An excellent practical reference
This is an excellent introductory overview of practical problems and solutions relating to moisture control in buildings. The diagrams are outstanding! The emphasis is on moisture problems and solutions in low-rise framed buildings. My only disappointment is that the underlying physics are not described and that predictive techniques are not presented. An excellent reference book for builders, and a must read for anyone involved with trouble shooting, inspecting, insuring, repairing, and restoring building envelopes

The Moment of Self-Portraiture in German Renaissance Art
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (April, 1993)
Author: Joseph Leo Koerner
Amazon base price: $66.00
Used price: $85.00
Average review score:

Supreme interpretive scholarship
Joseph Leo Koerner must rank as one of the most able and compelling figures writing in the field of Art History today. As with his previous work on Caspar David Friedrich this work is a masterpiece of interpretative criticism and research. Koerner proceeds always from close readings of individual works, but then sets them at the centre of a nexus of complex philosophical and socio historical questions. He invokes not only the writings of Durer's contemporaries, but such figures as Foucault and Adorno in drawing out the profoundest implications from the works cited. If proof were neeeded that art history can be urgent and disturbing rather than pedantic and arcane, then this book should offer it. As one reaches the end of this book one understands that the complex issues of identity which Durer and his circle grappled with are as vital and disturbing at the turn of the millenium as the were when Durer worked on the brink of the half millenium.

Yet another excellent introduction to ethical theory!
I first learned about this text when it was recommended to me by Quentin Smith (Professor of Philosophy, Western Michigan University). I am very grateful for the recommendation, for I have learned much from Professor Ellin's helpful introduction. Here is the table of contents:

Preface
1. An Introduction to Moral Theory
PART I: SUBSTANTIALLY CONCEPTUAL ISSUES
2. Challenges to Ethics: Relativism
3. Challenges to Ethics: Egoism
4. The Foundations of Ethics
5. Moral Facts
PART II: SUBSTIANTIALLY NORMATIVE ISSUES
6. Lying
7. Good Character
8. Utilitarianism
9. Kant: Evil as Irrationality
10. The Meaning of Life
Glossary
List of Abbreviations
Index

I found chapters 4 and 10 to be helpful discussions of topics that are sometimes, if not often, omitted from texts of this type. In chapter 4, Ellin discusses, among other things, the relationship between religion and ethics. In chapter 10, Ellin discusses the question of the meaning of life, including the implications of death, repetitive pointlessness, ultimate insignificance, absurdity for "big picture" meaning and also for morality.

Along with Pojman's _Ethics: Discovering Right and Wrong_ (3rd. ed.), Ellin's text offers an excellent college-level introduction to ethics.
