A Pleasure to Own
I have owned the first edition for over 22 years now. It is the most used volume in my personal library during the last two decades. So comprehensive, so well designed.

An indispensable work for anyone studying South Asia
I bought an early edition of this book, and it has been with me constantly. It remains one of the few indispensable works on South Asia, a truly unique one-volume resource. Many developments in South Asia have their roots in the recent and not so recent past, this provides as good a base to work from as anything I have ever come across. The price of the reprint (assuming the quality of the plates is as good as the original) is inexpensive, even for an individual, given the comprehensive scope of the Atlas.

Most comprehensive work for So. Asian historical research.
At the book's price, it is designed for academic reference but for any reader seriously interested in South Asia it contains a lifetime's worth of historical information. Dynasties, monuments, sacred sites, princely states, battles, invasions, photos of sculpture and archaeological finds, etc. One of the most continually fascinating books I've ever seen.

History of Joseph Smith by His Mother, Lucy Mack Smith

ALL GREAT LEADERS HAVE HAD A MENTOR. IT'S OBVIOUS THAT----
---JOSEPH SMITH HAD GREAT MENTORS WITHIN HIS FAMILY, AND THEN HE WAS MENTORED BY DEITY.

Reading the revelations received by the prophet Joseph Smith are inspirational. But it is good to see the restoration from the point of view of his mother. She tells some stories that we wouldn't know from any other source (like the story of his leg operation at age 9).

I was mostly impressed with how much constant persecution and distraction Joseph Smith and his family had to endure ON AN ONGOING BASIS for the whole time Joseph Smith was prophet. It never let up. It's a miracle that he was able to accomplish anything at all.

Many stories were ones I had never heard before. One story that I had never heard before was the time Joseph Smith's dad was thrown in jail for 30 days for a minor debt he owed. They told him they would let him free if he would just deny his testimony. He stayed in prison the whole 30 days and converted another person while in jail.

By reading this book, we can have Joseph Smith and his family (especially his mother) be OUR OWN MENTORS, to help us to be the kind of people they were.

--George Stancliffe

A Mother's Story
This is one of the key primary sources in studying the life of Joseph Smith. Others include the History of the Church, edited by B. H. Roberts, and the Papers of Joseph Smith, edited by Dean C. Jesse.

We see the life of Joseph Smith only as a mother could see him. We also have a broader history of the Smith and Mack families, and we learn more about Alvin, Joseph Smith's brother who died due to medical malpractice.

An inspiring true account of courage, faith, and endurance.
In my opinion, this book is a must-read. Lucy Mack Smith's account of the constant challenges and incredible opposition she and her family faced, helped me regain courage to face my own small trials. Lucy Mack was a woman worth emulating. She had amazing faith in God, a deep love for family, and burning desire to impart the truth to all with whom she came in contact. I'm a better person for having "met her" through this great book.

A Forgotten Masterpiece of American Fiction
The History of Rome Hanks" remains in the recollections of those of us who read it when it was first published in 1944 as one of the truly great American novels. Sinclair Lewis called it "one of the richest and most pungent novels of this decade", and The New Republic described it as "...a view of the Civil War worth putting beside Brady's photographs, Grant's "Memoirs", "The Red Badge of Courage" and "Miss Ravenels's Conversion".It was one of 1944's best sellers.

The central figure of the novel is a young man trying to sort out his memories of the tales of the Civil War told him by his grandfather and his father, and to imagine what their lives must have been like, and what the War had done to them. The tale ranges from past to present, from Gettysburg and Savage's Station and Shiloh to present-day Kansas. Pennell employs a fragmented, interior-monologue narrative style, giving his reader a view of the War as his characters must have experienced it, and he does it with dazzling control. It as, and remains, a genuinely great war novel.

Four years later Pennell published his second novel, "The History of Nora Beckham: A Museum of Home Life",(Charles Scribner's Sons; NY, 1948), which is an extension of the lives of his people into their postwar lives. And after that this brilliant novelist disappears from the literary radar screen-- absolutely disappears. In more than fifty-five years of searching I have found only the occasional mention of "Rome Hanks" and Joseph Stanley Pennell.

Perhaps one reason for such undeserved obscurity is this: the book was published in 1944, when paper was rationed, press runs were limited, and the writer's most likely readership was still overseas with another war on their minds and no access to a book which would have made perfect sense to them. Even so, the literary historians have failed readers grievously by their silence since.

An Underrated Classic
My father bought this book just before shipping out to Europe during the war and it remained his favorite novel until his death several years ago. It contains reminiscinces of the War Between the States which are as authentic feeling as any I've read. I believe the author was a military man who must have used the memories of his own battlefield experiences in writing the book. The segment on Pickett's Charge has stuck in my mind since I was in the ninth grade. This is the book by which I measure other combat novels and memoirs. It is also a very thought provoking book- more so than most other novels of its type. I have searched for other books by Pennell but to my regret have found none. Highly recommended.

Lyric Civil War reminiscenses of a man.
This is the classic example of the author who has one great book within him. He apparently had thought about writing a fictionalized recollection of an ancestor's Civil War experiences. The thought took decades to germinate. The novel, when it appeared after World War II, was enormously popular, and was never followed by a second book. This book is extremely moving, not only for its combat memories but for the day to day observations of life and nature. There are passages which taken alone would justify the read. The book was out of print for many years, and fortunately is available again. You could call it a longer Red Badge of Courage, only it is much broader ranging and more laden with insights. It is not preachy in the slightest. You will find it a memorable book for all ages and both sexes.

In Remembrance of My Great Grandfather - Henry Altfeltis
Truly an uncovered treasure that is dedicated to the men who so bravely fought with the 6th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. My Great Grandfather, Henry Altfeltis was one of those infantry soldiers, wounded at the Battle of Stones River. This book not only pays tribute to him but all of the men who were wounded or killed, paying the ultimate sacrifice with their lives, to perserve the freedoms that our nation enjoys today. Because of this book, "their heroic deeds will never be forgotten."

Excellent Regimental Record
Joe Reinhart has done the boys of the 6th Kentucky Infantry the greatest service possible by memorializing their story. If the reader is unmoved by the courage and sacrifice of these Kentuckians and immigrants after reading about their patriotism, then I cannot recommend anything which would suffice. These men were as adept at fighting and as courageous as those in any Eastern regiment. All regimental histories should emulate this one.

The Boys Who Feared no Noise
Joseph Reinhart's history of the valiant 6th Ky Volteers
is a wonderful and comprehensive story extensively researched.
He follows the unit from it's initial formation in northern Ky
through camps, marches, battles until the unit is mustered out
after Atlanta.

It is full of wonderful first hand accounts with some pictures and maps. This history is valuable addition to a reader's Cival War collection. It even has a roster of each company with
muster in and muster out information. It is a precious account
of those tragic times. A reader having an ancestor or family
member in the regiment will find this history a great treasure

HISTORICAL MISSIVES - A PEEK BEHIND THE CURTAIN
Famed patriarch Joseph Kennedy Sr.'s granddaughter, Amanda Smith (she is the daughter of Jean Kennedy Smith) did an extraordinary job of collecting missives written by various family members over a period of nearly half a century. The years 1914-1961 are meticulously laid out in militarily neat precision; it is through these letters that readers glean insights into the dynamics of a famous family.

My favorite parts in the book were the letters to, by and about the late Senator Robert Kennedy. Third son and seventh child of patriarch Joseph Kennedy, readers are treated to witness his growth and development, almost from the beginning. A composition he wrote at age 13 describing himself and his preferences is enlightening. One can smile at the boy who strove to keep up with his older siblings revisited in the man who achieved leadership status. From all accounts, Robert Kennedy was a diligent worker; the boy who sought to make himself heard by his siblings and by Joe, Sr. became the man who served as the voice for many. In adult life his voice was one that was very much heard and resounded throughout history. In reading this, it was impossible not to cheer his progress and feel encouraged by what he accomplished in his lifetime.

This is a delightful "peek behind the curtain" into the dynamics of generations of Kennedys.

I loved it.

The life of Joseph Kennedy in his own hand.
What a nice surprise to see a book about the Kennedy family based on fact. Smith's choice of letters help the reader visualize Joseph Kennedy as father, businessman, and ambassador. These letters are as historically important as they are touching. Smith's work has given us first hand accounts of many great historical events of the 20th century. This book will prove to be an important resource for biographers as well as a wonderful gift to Smith's own family. Highly recommend.

Superb Book!
I have read countless books on the Kennedys and I've got to say this is, by far, one of the most valuable books I've read.

Amanda Smith, who is Joseph P. Kennedy's grandaughter, did a phenomenal job gathering correspondences between Joe Kennedy and family members, dignitaries, colleagues and friends during the years of 1914-1961. The manner in which Smith compiled the letters allows for a smooth and enjoyable read of the book.

I am quite impressed (and thankful!) that Smith meticulously documented and made footnotes of the individuals who were either the recipient or author of a letter or are mentioned in the correspondence - as it provides the reader with a much better understanding of the context of the letter.

I've always had a strong appreciation and interest in reading original documents and writings. Amanda Smith truly did a fantastic job editing the letters and showing a new side of Joe Kennedy which I never saw before.

Definately well worth the cost of the book and most certainly recommended with the highest regard for those who enjoy reading about the Kennedys, political science, or correspondences.

How to Save America & the World: The Elimination of Terrorism, Greed & Other Evils

Challenge yourself to think outside the box; read this book!
If you are dissatisfied or angry when watching the news or reading a newspaper, then reading How to Save America and the World can help you to understand why the propaganda the media is pushing upsets you. Yes, America's a great country, however, she is not without flaws! This book will help you to see the flaws more clearly and understand the root of them. It also explains the difference between common sense and uncommon sense. So many people today seem to go through life not even thinking about what they are doing. They are satisfied to follow the rules or follow the crowd, but never to break free and think for themselves. How many times have you heard "That's the way it's done because that's the way it's always been done"? Challenge yourself to think outside the box and read this book. You too can welcome uncommon sense into your life and have a better understanding of why our country is in the shape it is in.

A MUST READ FOR THINKING PEOPLE OF THE WORLD!!!!!
This book is an incisive, hard-hitting exploration of the myriad problems facing our world today. This timely examination of issues is much needed in a world that is scared and confused by recent events. Mr. Francione has clearly done his homework and each chapter presents a thorough examination of its topic. While easy to read and understand, the logic and logical conclusions of this book are unassailable. No thinking person can deny the truths found in this must read book.

America: Terrorism can't be stopped until it is UNDERSTOOD!!
This book explains the underlying REASONS why terrorism and every other societal evil exists. It is an easy to read primer that goes right to the heart of our problems from the terrorism committed by Islamic radicals to the terrorism carried out by high school teenagers with no hope. Both types of terrorist are trying to tell us something. There are reasons!

You will not find the same tired explanations of problems that have no solutions. This book gives the solutions since they are easy to understand once the real problems are uncovered. Stop listening to the nightly "news" (a gross misnomer since it is the same dusty product in a sparkly package). And start reading real news. What this book has to say will never be spoken by bought-and-paid-for "media puppets." Freedom of the press is limited to those who own one.

Terrorism is only one of the many issues discussed in this book. Since terrorism is but one of many RESULTS, this book deals more with the CAUSES of terrorism and other evils. It explains in a non-religious manner why the LACK of true spirituality (honor, compassion and integrity) brings every type of evil upon us. Unless we are willing to confront our spiritual and moral weakness, no amount of guns and money will stop terrorism, crime and disease. They will only make the bomb owners richer while taxpayers become more poor.

It is this author's position that the real problem is the greed and ego of those who are supposed to lead us by good example. Instead, we are being taught to grab all the money and toys we can by any means necessary. Our leaders have taught us well and we have been good students. Now we are frantically waving flags without any idea of what America really stands for. Hint: it isn't shop (or party) until you drop. And in case you haven't noticed, America is no longer the land of the free and the home of the brave. It has become the land of the overtaxed, overworked and undereducated. It is the home of the fearful who look to Oprah and Jerry Springer to show us that our children are hopeless and suicidal, our relationships are full of deceit and disrespect and our courts of full of drug cases and "the coffee was too hot, it burned me - give me 10 million dollars. Boo hoo."

America is still the greatest country the world has ever seen. But it is in serious trouble. This book explains how we can solve ALL of its problems and turn America into the happy and healthy nation we all want it to be. The only thing standing in the way is our hopelessness and our leaders' greed. True patriotism not jingoism is sorely needed. This book explains the vital difference.

As long as we continue to believe that nothing can be done - nothing will be done. Whether you believe you can or you can't - you're right!! We will continue downward toward a nation where our children will be less well off than we are. We will continue to experience terrorism and growing unemployment while our industies close their doors one after another. We will lose more civil rights in a desperate attempt to "catch the evil terrorists." And we will lose our American standard of living! The middle class is now being bled. Our leaders won't stop until we are all poor or dead and only they are rich.

This book picks up where the movie BULLWORTH left off. If you haven't seen the movie, see it. It should be required viewing for every American. This book should be required reading. Remember, as Edmund Burke said, the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. If you do only one thing to help America and yourself, read this book. And tell two friends.

Mother of Twins
Since I have read this book it has changed my life and my families life. My 13yr old twins are reading it now and is starting to look at life in a differnt way for the better. As a avid reader of many authors, I must Say Mr. Voldeck II was a inspiration and "We only read about these kinds of people in history books."

8th grader review
the book is a must have. a real page turner. i really enjoyed this book.

From the Editor
I have been in the corporate/professional arena for over 25 years, and have proofread and edited everything from multimillion dollar contracts to manuscripts. During the editing of this book, I realized I was embarking upon no average novel. Immoral Balance brought me out of the dark and into the light on so many issues in my life, the biggest challenge being a long-time weight problem. I have probably read "every" diet book that has been published and have lost weight, only to regain the pounds, plus more. This book enkindled a need to reach deep inside of me and brought me face-to-face with the "real" me; something that I have never been able to do. The editing of this book was almost effortless and the writing quite refreshing, reminiscent of the days of Edgar Allan Poe. I see great success for this young author and look forward to his follow-up novels.
