Essential Introduction
_The Jews in the Greek Age_ is an excellent primer to the Intertestamental Period.

Beginning with Alexander the Great and running through the beginning of the Common Era, the book is organized roughly chronologically and by theme. Chapters treat in some detail such important issues as the Septuagint, the Jewish communities in the Diaspora, Aramaic literature, Jewish religious practices, the economy of Palestine during the period, the development of priestly and scribal classes, etc.

Bickerman's prose is elegant and readable without sacrificing detail, and a substantial bibliography organized by subject provides a great starting point for further research into specific questions. You'll want to read this in connection with any study of the Deuterocanonical books, the Pseudepigrapha or the Dead Sea Scrolls, or even as a useful bridge between study of the Old Testament and the New.

The Jews of Vienna in the Age of Franz Joseph

An excellent book on a critical time in Jewish History
This is an excellant book. Unlike many others, it gives you more than the title suggests. It actually starts in the 1820's, and gives a brief synopsis of the Jews in Vienna before this period also. The basic format of the book is to concentrate on the main figures and issues that Viennese Jewry faced in the different periods that the book covers. The author gives a quite fair treatment to all of the figures in the period irregardless of their political or religious views, and open-mindedly examines the issues that Viennese Jewry faced and the decisions that they made. Viennese Jewry in this period was very important and instructive. Of course the most famous figure is Theodore Hertzl, who is treated at length. Vienna at the time had a very diverse Jewish community. It ranged from the super assimilated aristicratic Jews like the Rothchilds and Baron Hirsh to the ultra-Orthodox immigrants from Galicia. The issues that they faced ranged from assimilation, Zionism, anti-Semitism, to inter-Jewish relations.

Your Receiver Is Only As Good As Your Antenna!
Don't be one of those people who spend big money for a deluxe communications receiver and then waste its potential by using a poorly designed, inefficient antenna system with it. For top reception from 100 kHz to 30 MHz, your receiver needs an antenna that can deliver as much signal as possible to it.

Joe Carr's Receiving Antenna Handbook is a complete guide to high performance receiving antennas for long wave all the way to the upper end of the short-wave spectrum. This isn't some warmed-over collection of slightly modified ham radio transmitting antenna designs; instead, it is a comprehensive examination of slightly modified ham radio transmitting antenna designs; instead, it is a comprehensive examination of antennas intended specifically for receiving purposes. Among the many topics Carr discusses are:

* The basic theory behind all receiving antennas
* How signals propagate over long distances and how to design antennas to maximize reception distance
* How to construct a tuned antenna for any frequency below 30 MHz
* Special designs for indoor and limited space applications
* Getting a good ground connection at radio frequencies
* Safety considerations in antenna design and installation
* Beverage, rhombic, and other directional short-wave antennas
* Loop antennas for the AM broadcast band

Joe Carr gives you complete construction details for each antenna. Most can be easily constructed using only wire or aluminum tubing. And you don't need to be an electronics genius to understand Joe's clear, friendly text to build one of the designs in this book. Give your receiver what it needs to pull those weak signals out of the noise-a good antenna!

Do yourself (and your radio) a favor and purchase this book, you will not be sorry!

Amazing book!
Anyone interested in the White Mountains of New Hampshire will be fascinated by this compelling account of Joe Dodge, the real Old Man of the mountains. Putnam weaves humor and tragedy with his own personal knowledge of the man who was perhaps most responsible for the modern perception of the Northern Peaks. AMC Hutmaster, pioneer SAR organizer, co-founder of the Mount Washington Observatory, organizer of the legendary Inferno races from the summit of Washington to Pinkham Notch, it's all told in this wonderful book.

Joey's Story: A Portrait of a School Leader
Published in Paperback by Scarecrow Press (August, 2002)
Authors: Joseph P. Batory and Josephy P. Batory
Amazon base price: $14.95

An inspirational leader
What an insightful and intiguing book! Once you begin reading, be prepared to continue to the final page. Joe Batory's inspirational leadership and dedication to children is like a beacon shining through the foggy mist that obscures public education today. Every politician should be required to read chapter 19, "The Moral Vacuun," or at least have it read to them before they speak about education. In addition, he paints a beautiful portrait of his own personal love story with his wife in the "Arranged Marriage" chapter.
A great follow-up to Batory's first book, "Yo! Joey!" I highly recommend this wonderful portrait of a school leader to everyone, parents, educators, school board members, and politicians.

A revealing presentation of John Muir's personality
John Muir: My Life With Nature is one of the best introductory biographies into the life of this great and influential American naturalist available to young readers today. Told in his own words, the text was compiled and aptly presented by naturalist Joseph Cornell who does full and complete justice in presenting the reader with an accurate and revealing presentation of John Muir's personality, life, thought, and accomplishment. Although designed specifically for young readers, John Muir: My Life With Nature will also be appreciated by adults with an interest in this unique and impressive man and his contributions to public awareness of the need for conservation and wildlife preservation.

John Stuart Mill on Liberty and Control
Published in Digital by Princeton Univ. Press ()
Author: Joseph Hamburger
Amazon base price: $9.95
Average review score:

Grist for the Mill
Joseph Hamburger, who passed away in 1997, has left us a rich legacy by virtue of his trenchant analysis of the complete Mill. While most scholars have focused on On Liberty and his essay on Utilitarianism, Hamburger has chosen to focus on the entire corpus of Mill's work.

Hamburger is the only scholar who has successfully argued that Mill, long considered amongst the pantheon of great liberal thinkers, offers us a look at the conservative strain of Mill's thought. This is arrived at through a close textual analysis of Mill's less well-known but no less salient work, thereby giving us a more balanced view of this important 19th century thinker. A must read for those who wish to understand Mill as he understood himself.

Johnny, I Wish I Knew Ye
The book "Johnny, We Hardly Knew Ye" by Kenneth O'Donnell and David Powers offers a wide variety of information about the life of John F. Kennedy. Focusing on his political life, with which they were deeply involved, the authors give a perspective on the life of President Kennedy that can't be matched by many others, for not many others knew him as well as they did. Unlike a normal, relatively boring biography, this collection of memories about their friend and president contains stories, personality, and detailed information as seen through the eyes of white house aides and friends. I highly recommend this book to learn more about Kennedy and to have a great time in the process.

I am fifteen years old. The reason that I read this book is because I hope one day to be involved in public life. I began this book knowing relatively nothing about Kennedy, except his assination and his line, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." This book gives me information to quench my thirst for knowledge as well as inspire and provide me with information that I will be able to use in the future, which I am only aboe to dream of now.

I love this book and feel that it is a shame that this is out of print. I feel that it is atrocious to think of a person not even attempting to find a copy of this book or not reading it if they have it. To conclude, I feel that this book is well worth the read, and so much more.

The book has different figurines than book one. This makes it a must have in addition to the first book! As a collector I have looked through this book hundreds of times and am very glad I purchased it.
