Textbook of Clinical Medicine for Asia

A Concise Practical Manual
It isn't a good reference for internal medicine but it's concise practical handbook for quick cross-reference and revision.

Compared to other textbook of similar size, such as Davidson's, it lacks concise review of important anatomy and physiology, detailed explanation of pathophysiology, colourful illustrations, and useful tables. These drawbacks make it too difficult for medical students starting clinical practice to read and understand, and too brief for doctors to look up detailed description and explanation.

However, it contains many useful diagnostic criteria and practical management guidelines, which are useful for final-year students and even junior doctors. Moreover, its concise descriptions of disease makes it appropiate for examinations.

For Thurtells everywhere!
If you are a member of the Thurtell family (those Vikings who came from Denmark in the 9th Century to take over England), you will love this book about our Uncle John. He was such a nice guy that many didn't believe he had committed the murder. So, as he was about to be dropped to his death, he admitted it. His was the first jury trial to be covered by the press and,due to the yellow journalism of the day, was almost the end of same!--Terry Miller, media@naples.net

Speaks to hearts today
Joseph Brodsky is a poet of insight and wisdom. Sometimes difficult, but always thought provoking, Brodsky does not leave the reader unaffected. To Urania contains what is possibly my favorite Brodsky poem, "Lithuanian Nocturne." One line in particular haunts my memory:

"Avenging, its permanence, a
place stuffs time with a tenant, a lodger--
with a life-form, and throws up the latch."

Though sometimes distant, To Urania manages to do what the best of poetry does...it reaches across time and culture to speak to hearts today.

Acquired taste, indeed
This new collection features ten stories of idiosyncratic characters in exotic locales, from Alaska to Tunisia. Porter weaves interesting observations about life into the eloquent and sometimes lackluster tales that fill this collection. His opaque style defies the reader to connect with the characters, but luckily in the final two stories ("Scrupulous Amédée" and "Touch Wood") the clouds part and the reader is invited into a cozy space. "Touch Wood : Short Stories" is a well-written short story collection that may not gain a wide audience, but for those who do connect with it, there is much to appreciate and upon which to reflect.

Trinity in Process: A Relational Theology of God

This isn't Trinity as we know it.
Thoughtful essays, if somewhat labouring a rather simple point, in language which is not for the uninitiated. Because the Process system depends on a bi-polar model, consequently there is little room for a theology of Trinity - Binity perhaps, but what to do with the Spirit is a problem for all the essays. There seems little resonance with orthodoxy and orthopraxis, but that is not really a concern for many of the essayists.

Interesting questions for Christians to Answer folowing 9/11
The author poses some challenging questions that face all questions and he does so in a quite readable format. The writing does not break new ground, but it does present the questions in a timely context -- post Sept. 11.

The examples of challenges are good (although somewhat repetetive) and he proposes some spiritual solutions to these challenges.

Overall, a nice read

Tubal Cain (The Collected Works of Joseph Hergesheimer - 28 Volumes)

A forgotten classic? (Not really)
I came across this novelette in a collection that cost me [$$$] in a jumble sale. I immedately started reading "Tubal Cain' by Joseph Hergesheimer, because I vaguely recalled having seen a movie of the same name. I turns out that this movie was made in 1934. Hergesheimer apparently had some small continuing fame in the 10' 20's and 30's of the 20th C., but he seems almost forgotten now.
It is true that in comparison with other more famous authors of the era (such as Willa Cather) his achievement is insignificant. This is a shame because Tubal Cain, a story of the development of the Pennsylvania iron industry, contains some very good writing and some very effective storytelling. Unfortunately Hergesheimer did not have the skill to effectively make use of his strengths. Tubal Cain is very frustrating in that the strong storyline is abruptly terminalted. (Its as if an eight month gestation is abruptly aborted when the mother and child seemed to be in perfect health). The plot is developing very well, when the author inexplicably terminates the story in a very unsatisfactory fashion. I was enjoying the story, despite its flaws, and felt very short changed by the ending.
Its a pity the old movie also seems to be unavailable on video or DVD - it would be good to see it again.
Quite a good read, but with some frustrating flaws.

History of the Camera would be a better title.
This book is part of a series one we will probably buy all of they are well written. Like I said in the title though, it's more of a History of the camera and the people that used them over time and how that's changes. Nice 4 page pullout in the middle.

However, it's not a book with picutres of the guts of the camrea like I thought it would be. I thought it would be more about "how it works" and "how the parts have changed" and gotten smaller, that it is NOT!

It's well done, there is alot more reading, then I thought there would be. This is a book for an avid reader, someone doing a report, teaching a class, or a student of the camera/film industry, or someone wanting to know more about the "individualS" (not nessecarily the actual inventor) that brought this invention to the world and it's people. It's more a High School level read then it is for upper elementary (which I bought it for).

Whats hidden behind the word??
Beck, Lynn G. & Murphy, Joseph. (New York, 1993) Understanding the Principalship-Metaphorical Themes: 1920s-1990s. Teacher's College Press, Columbia University.

Author's Profile: Joseph Murphy is the Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership at the Vanderbilt University. Lynn G. Beck is an Assistant Professor of Education at the University of California.

Type: Academic Research

Audience: Academicians and Practitioners.

Its a great way to understand the changing times and the development of the role of the principal reflects the changes in the school community.

The authors have studied the history of the roles of principals over the decades. An in-depth analysis has been made using metaphorical themes that were used over h decades to describe the changing roles of principals. As the analysis continues, themes and patterns were discovered in the language people used to describe principals. Each decade is explained interestingly and the metaphors used portray a logical explanation. In the twenties for example, much of the work focused on spiritual values; in the thirties on business-like efficiency in schools; in the forties the focus was on the principal's role in war and post war efforts; in the fifties , the maintenance of established patterns seemed important; in the sixties, the major emphasis was on conflict; in the seventies on negotiation and in the eighties on change.

Very well written and although rich in literiture review, it is interesting to read and different!
