Joe Green - the best authority on Jews in London 1914-39
Joe Green is known to most as an outstanding British scientist who played a key role in our understanding of the role of vitamins in human health. His passion for literature is manifold - his encyclopedic book on detective fiction is available in many reference libraries to the connoisseurs of this genre. But we think that Joe will be ultimately remembered as the author of the definitive works on the life of Jews in London between the wars. This minority played an important role in the formation of the modern British culture and society in general. Joe was an integral part of it and his superb command of the history and the English language makes this book not only full of interesting facts but a truly captive reading beyond those of typical history books. His autobiographical approach makes you laugh and cry as you race through the pages. The price of this hardcover book is high but you will be keeping it on your bedside for many years as great fun to read.

Social Influence

A state-of-the art book on social influence
Social influence is the very stuff of everyday life; in a million imperceptible, sometimes conscious and sometimes unconscious ways, we influence, and are influenced by others. Some of the most exciting findings of psychology come from research on direct forms of social influence such as obedience, conformity, compliance and the like. This book offers and excellent and up-to-date review of social influence phenomena written by an outstandning group of leading international researchers who collaborated on this volume during a recent residential symposium held at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. The result is a truly excellent volume. The topics covered include both subtle, unconscious forms of social influence, and more direct, explicit forms of influence strategies. Further, the role of social and cultural factors in the uses of, and responses to social influence is considered. The applications of the topics discussed in this work are innumerable: advertising, marketing, counselling, clinical psychology, health psychology, organizational behavior, interpersonal relationships and group interaction are just some of the many stages where social influence processes are played out in real life. Many of the chapters in the book offer detailed discussion of the uses and applications of influence strategies in everyday encounters. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to anyone interested in finding out more about how people use and react to attempts at social influence, and more generally, to anyone who is fascinated by the way people communicate and interact with each other.

An excellent resource in supplementing the textbook!!!
I was a student in the social psych class module in Australia and Sabini's textbook on social psychology really fascinates the whole class! An U.Penn academic in Social Psych thoroughly describes and features concrete, research and stage theories from the research field of social psych....Sabini's textbook is so detailed and stimulating to read that when exams comes ...I have problems in recalling ....(...Sight...)

As a result, I had decided to purchase this Sabini study guide to social psychology. This study guide is structured and formatted into organised chapters related exactly to the textbook. Each chapter in the study guide first comprise of essay structured questionnaires, followed by a series of multiple-choice-questionnaires (MCQ's), and then structured short sentenced questionnaires. Answers to the MCQ's are provided at the end of every chapter and structured short sentenced questionnaires with answers beside them.

I personally find that the study guide is really beneficial to anyone who owns the textbook on Sabini !

Social, Ethical, and Policy Implications of Engineering : Selected Readings
Published in Paperback by IEEE (October, 1999)
Author: Joseph R. Herkert
Amazon base price: $76.95
Average review score:

Comprehensive discussion of Engineering and its Implications
Very comprehensive and wide ranging collection of articles on the social, ethical and policy implications of engineering. In its second section, Social and Ethical Responsibilities of Engineers, and to some extent in the third section, Engineering Ethics and Public Policy, essays address actual issues for engineers. These essays are a refreshing change from essays about technology and engineering that are actually general complaints about modern life and modern values for which technology is blamed. The individual essays are very thoughtful and well written. Herkert's introductions are substantive and help orient the reader to the issues, and the author has even provided a useful index to the collection. It is good to have this fine group of essays collected in one place. The individual essays will be of value and interest to many different audiences. Since all the essays are from the IEEE Technology and Society Magazine, taken together they also provide an important window on the development of discussions in engineering ethics, the social implications of engineering, and engineering and policy in the last two decades. In this respect is the engineering counterpart of Rosemary Chalk's collection of papers from SCIENCE magazine, Science, Technology, and Society.

Best textbook I have read
I was not very enthusiastic about taking a Sociology course. As I started reading this text I began developing a more informed view of the world we live in and how it works. The book is certainly a masterpiece that tackles issues of global relevance in an objective way. I would recommend anyone to buy this book and teachers to use it as their text.

Soil Mechanics: Principles and Applications

Review by a friend of Perloff and Baron
This book is one of a kind. It outlines various types of problems, including past failures, and then proceeds to explain how to work a problem, or in the case of failures they describe what went wrong and how the problem might have been prevented.

All geotechnical engineers should have a copy in their library.

A soldier's tale
Published in Unknown Binding by Collins ()
Author: M. K. Joseph

Average review score:

A haunting tale you will never forget
M K Joseph has written a haunting tale you will never forget. Despite the title, the story is not actually about War and suffering. It is all about the complex interactions our human species has -- and the incredibly complex choices we are forced to make -- when faced with extraordinary circumstances.

I first became acquainted with this story through Film -- one of the few movies that is every bit as good as the book. The movie is hard to find on video, and the book is hard to find on the shelf. Both are worth persisting for.

Buy the book, see the movie, and see if you agree. In America it would have been a Pulizer prize winner. In New Zealand, it was yet another superb work of art, quickly forgotten.

Native American Version of Battle of the Little Big Horn
Someone should do a movie version of this book. With all the excellent Native American actors and actresses we have today, I'm sure that America would enjoy the Native American version of this saga. Greasy Grass better known as The Battle of Little Big Horn in this version excels in bitter truth and, in triumphant victory for the Native Americans. Everyone would walk away with much food for thought.

excellent commentary on SOS with practical applications
This is an excellent book that looks at the book of Songs of Solomon in the bible and gives a clear, understandable commentary. Couple that with the author's own insight, and practical applications it has the power to change your views on the book of Song of Solomon and your marriage. With doses of humour and keen insights this book is a must for every married couple.
