A nice, comprehensive work
I did my Junior Paper on Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood," and while doing research in the NY Public library, I came across this book. It was by and far the most helpful of the sources I found. This is a compilation of various essays from literary critics who comment on many of Capote's works. I firmly believe that this book gave me a solid foundation in the analyzing of Mr. Capote's novel as well as a better understanding and familiarity with the idiosyncrasies of his works. I would recommend this book to anyone who is attempting to gain critical input on Capote, as well as to anyone who is simply interested in Capote's writing. The obvious drawback is the stratospheric price, but if you can stomach it, this book offers nothing but quality.

Worship the Creator, not creation
I enjoyed this book because it combines science and religion. Too many environmental science books are secular and miss the point of taking care of the planet--we are God's stewards to manage his "property." This would make a nice supplemntary text in a religious college where God has not been kicked out. It wouldn't fly in a state school, but it gives a believing instructor some "flavoring" which could be worked into current environmental issues. Science needs to be taught objectively--given that God is above objectivity as the first and still sustaining cause.

Great Raid!
On a recommendation, I ordered this book as I am interested in history. Upon receipt, I honestly thought it would be like many historical accounts I've read: dry, long, a battle to read through. How absolutely wrong I turned out to be!!!! This book was amazing and I couldn't put it down. I completed the book in one sitting...

In fact, Capt Slavick's writing style and story telling was so captivating, I FOUND MYSELF ROOTING FOR THE GERMAN RAIDERS against the Allies!!!

This is a story of perseverence, leadership, integrity, dedication-to-duty, experience, job knowledge, "can-do" attitudes and yes, even discipline. The crew of the Atlantis displayed all of these time-honored words that the military holds so dear. The terms themselves may be cliche to some, but to the military, they mean "mission accomplished." When one reads this book, one will have a better understanding of what these words truly mean.

Capt Slavick also captures the essence of WWII naval warfare for the reader. He brings the reader onto the ship and deftly includes us into the nuances of inaction and wildly takes us along during the explosive interruption of combat and chaos...

Read this book, you won't be disappointed!

Anthology of Feminism, Technoscience and Reproduction
Sixteen essays make a contribution to "cyborg anthropology" and "cyborg feminism." Volume considers human reproduction through the lens of an interrogation of the cyborg metaphor, its power, pleasure, promise, and threat. Section one essays discuss medico-technological interventions in conception and contraception including production of "technosemen." Section two includes essays by Emily Martin, Rayna Rapp and others, examining gestation and the use of medical imaging (ultrasound) and screening (amniocentesis) technologies to produce "normal" and "healthy" fetuses. Section three essays consider technobirth, focusing on the medical monitoring and management of the mother's body. Section four considers childrearing in a digital culture, including essay by Sherry Turkle on cyborg babies in a culture of "simulation." Exceptional introduction by David-Floyd and Dumit provides historical/theoretical overview of cyborg metaphor as quintessential postmodern myth and tool.

Daniel: A Commentary on the Book of Daniel (Hermeneia: A Critical and Historical Commentary on the Bible)

Authors: John Joseph Collins, Adela Yarbro Collins, and Frank M. Cross
Amazon base price: $50.00

Massive, authoritative, comprehensive
This book is massive, but justifies its size by giving a thorough and comprehensive survey of one of the strangest and most incomprehensible books of the Bible. It covers every aspect that would interest the diligent Bible scholar. Beginners will find it very tough going! Collins believes that Daniel himself had no hand in writing the book, but that it was the product of the age of the Maccabean struggle. However, he presents all the evidence and arguments fully, being fair to those of a more conservative viewpoint. What you will not find in this book is an attempt to show that Daniel was successfully predicting events in the 20th century or even further in the future.
