a good book for orthopaedics residents.
I was teached in the basis of four big books: Turek, Campbell?s, Tajchain and Watson-jones. I see a better horizon for new residents and many choises and this is one of them in orthopaedics, not in fractures.

Turn Left at Orion
This is a great book for a backyard astronomer. The pictures are how the object will look in a small telescope - not fancy large telescopes. It is written to be interesting for a young child or an adult. A great book for beginners. Buy it and enjoy it.

A fictional 're-creation' of the love story of Mary & Joseph
Using vivid word portraits, the author blends scripture, tradition, and creative imagination into a fictional re-creation of the courtship of Mary and Joseph. This is the foundational piece of the trilogy... which continues with "Three From Galilee" and concludes with "The Messiah".

Two Josephs on Molokai: damien and dutton
This book was hard to put down once I picked it up. The author brought to life the hardships and accomplishments that the two very different missionary Josephs faced everyday living in a leper colony in Hawaii in the late 1800s. He gave this insidious disease a humaness that touched my heart and took away some of the steroetypical fears that many of us have. The conversations between various characters in the book were like opening doors into who these people really were. You felt like you knew them well. The contrasts were also interesting as in the incredible beauty of the island vs the incredible ugliness of the disease. By the time you finish this book, you will have such a respect for these two men, Damien and Dutton, even though you learn that they are just as human as we are with their own worries, fears and doubts, too. I highly recommend it. It's been passed around my office and the reactions have all been positive.

Orthodoxy on parade
This is an excellent study of John Paul II's difficult encyclical on faith and reason. Most of the contributions deal with the vexed issue of "Christian philosophy," a much disputed topic in the 1930s which has been given new life by our reigning philosopher-pope. Highlights are the fine essays by Avery Cardinal Dulles, placing the current issues in historical context, and the remrkable essay by David Meconi on the Marian dimension of philosophy.

What you always wanted to know....
Most "financial planning" books are dreadful. They all preach the same old stuff... scrimp and save, live an aweful life of miserly worry, chained to a budget. Finally somebody got it RIGHT. Joseph Simpson's book is LIBERATING. It shows you how and why most of what the so called experts have been preaching is just not true and just not realistic. Take, for example credit cards. If you read just about every financial advisor from Suze on, you hear "credit cards are evil...." That's just not true. Simpson shows you how to use credit cards as a financial weapon in managing your money. Good Deal. Finally makes sense.

When it comes to budgets, something I abhor, Simpson says simply, "burn it!" ALL RIGHT! It feels liberating to hear a CPA tell you that all that budgeting stuff was really unnecessary. No more obsessing over what happened to that [$$$]I had in my purse.

When it comes to planning for retirement, I was a wreck. All I heard was that if I didn't put away most of my income, I would be a bag lady. OK, so what am I supposed to live on NOW? Simpson's book shows me why most of what I was being preached was a bunch of bull designed to help some "financial planner" sell me investments. No more guilt. A Clear View is what Simpson gave me. Relief, oh what a relief there was.

This book should be required reading for anyone before they get in the clutches of some "financial planner." To begin with, you'll understand what they are up to, see when the sales pitch kicks in, and know exactly what is truth and what is hype.

This book is unlike any other I have ever read. Thank you Joseph Simpson. You have made my life a whole lot less stressful, and you have helped me see clearly that the future isn't
doom and gloom, but full of promise and excitement.

Understanding Alan Sillitoe (Understanding Contemporary British Literature)
Published in Hardcover by University of South Carolina Press (February, 1999)
Authors: Gillian Mary Hanson and Matthew Joseph Bruccoli
Amazon base price: $34.95
Used price: $33.56

Highly recommended.
Gillian Hanson provides her audience with a comprehensive and technically wonderful critical analysis of Silitoe's works - in effect, a brilliant overview of one the twentieth century's greatest writers. Hanson displays an amazing aptitude for conveying the inherent meaning in Silitoe's writing - an almost uncanny understanding of the thoughts and emotions that drove his fiction. It is an excellent choice for either scholarly efforts or casual reading - highly recommended.

An excellent introduction to a difficult subject.
An unusually clear and concise introduction to several areas of American Literary Theory. All to often, books of this sort are written by professors for an audience of professors. Dr. Spikes' book, instead, is an excellent tool for students and general readers intent on understanding just a little better the texts they read.
