Excellent
This book is just perfect. It's very well written. Conrad shows an understanding of the predicament of women of his time. Conrad advances the plot though the voice of the characters, who tell a story, which involves another character telling a story, etc. At one point the tale is six levels deep; but such is the skill of Conrad that you do not notice and are never lost. One of Conrad's two or three best. A book I was sad to end because I was enjoying it so much.
Take the Chance and read this wonderful novel
I cannot believe that there are no customer reviews already for this spectacular novel - full of intruiging situations and wonderful characters - certainly the best Conrad female character I have read. Conrad is a wonderful writer in style and the manner in which he tells a yarn - how then has this novel become so 'lost'? It has wonderful lines ('Don't be in a hurry to thank me,' says he. 'The voyage isn't finished yet.' p22 Oxford World Classics), great insights (women respond to the smallest things, which immediately had me nodding in agreement from my own experience), spectacular descriptions ('Yes, I gave up the walk [along a cliff top with the intention of killing herself],' she said slowly before raising her downcast eyes. When she did so it was with an extraordinary effect. It was like catching sight of a piece of clear blue sky, of a stretch of open water. And for a moment I understood the desire of that man to whom the sea ans sky of his solitary life had appeared suddenly incomplete without that glance which seemed to belong to both of them. p231). The characters are admirable in behaviour sometimes, victims sometimes, regrettable in behaviour sometimes, or just plain confused - just like real people. But one thing I really like is the way the narrator of the story is an observer, barely a participant of the events being described.
This may not be the perfect novel, but I urge you not to miss it. The chapter 'On the Pavement' by itself is worth the read!

An enlightening and useful book, important subject.
Few people understand and write about the important relationships between parents, caregivers and the children they share and care for. These authors have studied the subject and bring insight and much to think about. A useful book for both parents who want to have successful relationships with their caregivers and deepen their understanding of what is happening in their lives. Caregivers will find their important role appreciated. A genuinely new contribution to the huge numbers of books out there for parents.
Excellent, must reading for parents of small children
This book is full of wonderful examples and scenarios of various parent-care giver interactions that really help to organize aspects of this important and complex relationship. It is also easy to read and understand. I found several examples that really struck close to home for me. I highly recommend it for both parents and care givers alike.
China: Transition to a Market Economy (Studies on Contemporary China)
Published in Hardcover by Clarendon Pr (November, 1997)
Amazon base price: $80.00
Average review score:
Highly Recommended!
China is still an enigma to many business people and investors who wonder about the extent to which the country really will participate in a market economy. This book provides a strong, yet concise, review of the history and results of China's transition from a planned economy to a market economy. Author Joseph C. H. Chai covers the Chinese government's reform efforts across several economic sectors, including agricultural, industrial, financial, trade liberalization and foreign direct investment. The chapter on non-state sector business fully rounds out Chai's portrait of the current state of the Chinese economy. We [...] recommend this fascinating book to anyone who wants a scholarly review of the economic issues facing China before, during and after market economy reforms. The better your knowledge of economics, the more useful this book will be to you, but even so, it will intrigue any reader who has more than a passing interest in China.
A thorough overview of China's economic reform
The research of J.C.H. Chai is best described as solid and thorough. He utilizes a sound methodology to consider "what reforms have been conducted" "why reforms were conducted" "were the reforms effective in acheiving their purpose". This balanced approach is a welcome change to the popular style of writing to force one's own personal viewpoint on the success of China's economic reforms. If you are looking for a sound overview of China's economic reform, then this book is for you.

The Best Non-Biblical Christmas Story!
This book is definitely a keeper, if you can find it. My grandmother gave it to our family when I was a little girl (in the late 60s or early 70s) and I even designed felt board characters around the story for use in a Children's Lit. class in college. Based on the true story of how Silent Night came to be written, the tale and the drawings are outstanding and enjoyable for all ages. This makes for one of the best read-aloud stories and I always look forward to going to my parents' home during the holidays and locating this treasure of a book.
wonderful book
This is a wonderful book, delightfully illustrated by Barbara Remington--maybe best known for her covers on Ballantine's '60s paperback editions of Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings."
It's a favorite of my childhood, and my kids today love it, too.
Too bad it's been allowed to slip out of print.

Edge Cities No More
Rodriguez tells us that edge cities are no longer the center of the urban debate, but rather, as suburbs become more urban, the urban core is becoming more suburban. The paradox is that out of this rearticulation of the city an entirely new form of urbanism is emerging that is on the one hand highly homogeneous, but on the other hand is shaped by local history and the ethnic configuration of cities.
Excellent Book, Must Read
This book turns the study of suburbanization and "new urbanism" on its head. It is a totally new way of thinking about cities and urban change. It redefines the study of cities. It is groundbreaking and paradigm shifting.

Excellent work on Civil War arms
Jo Bilby's work on Civil War Firearms is invaluable. I have referred to my copy numerous times and it has become dogeared with use. Mr. Bilby is a kind and highly intelligent man who has done history buffs a great service by providing this book. If you enjoy this book also check out his other works: "Mr. Bilby is the author of Three Rousing Cheers: A History of the 15th New Jersey Infantry from Flemington to Appomattox, Forgotten Warriors: New Jersey's African-American Civil War Soldiers, Remember Fontenoy: The 69th New York and the Irish Brigade In the Civil War and co-editor, with Steven O'Neill, of My Sons Were Faithful and They Fought: The Irish Brigade At Antietam...
A great book for collectors and historians
The book covers the history of and tactics used for several Civil War firearms. These guns include smoothbores, sharpshooters, repeaters, and several others. Joseph Bilby's research into the historical aspect of each weapon is excellent and worthy of praise. Bilby also provides an invaluable supply and information list near the end of the book. Collectors will find this part of the book very helpful for locating pieces to add to their collection.

If you play, you need this book
I found this collection of guitar pieces for Bach quite eloquent. Mr. Harris presents a well-organized collection that I found easy to follow. His textual analysis preceeding the sheets offers expert guidelines for playing Bach on guitar--something many classical musicians may never have considered. In reality, I'm just putting in a good word for my brother. This book genuinely expands the cannonical concept of the classical guitar.
bach at his best
bach and the guitaar are made for eachother. even though he didn't write anything for guitar, it just fits

Recent evidence continues to question the current paradigm that cancer is a local disease that later spreads. Issels instead saw cancer as a systemic disease that in its later stages showed observable symptoms, the tumours. Treating the tumours was therefore a waste of time unless the cause was tackled. He saw the causes as many, including physical, emotional and spiritual so he tackled all possibilities with dedication and a caring approach. The only contributing factor he apprently underestimated was the emotions. Four well-run randomised trials have since shown that simply tackling the emotional causes can have dramatic results, typically 50-70% increased survival times. But his Wholebody-therapy he used in the 1960s has still not been matched by any of the other alternative cancer therapists since. The book gives a history of the treatment of cancer over the past few thousands of years and goes into a lot of well-documented factors that make up his total treatment. For those who want to understand the cancer process this book is essential reading.
